3 Sentence Ficathon

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

EDIT!  THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS,  PLEASE POST NEW PROMPTS
HERE!

CaramelSilver isn’t running the awesome 3 sentence ficathon this year, but she said I could do it in her place!!  (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!)

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

How long can it go?
CaramelSilver kept the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon up for a month.  I'd suggest closing it on Sunday, April 7, 2013.  How does that sound? (edit:  If we reach 5,000 comments sooner, I'll start a new one).

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

As  [personal profile] lady_songsmith explains, for the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine created a delicious account to archive the 3 Sentence Ficathon.   [personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, so, here is the account (nothing current added yet, though): https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

psyche29: A brown eye with rainbow eyeliner all around it (rainbow eyes)

[personal profile] psyche29 2013-03-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The words bring him up short, stopping within six inches of her, and the tension builds. She's seen him at what he'd very much describe as his worst; that glint in her eyes, that challenge hangs there, dangling like bait, and neither Bruce nor Hulk are certain of the forming idea.

Natasha watches his indecision and a slow grin curves her lips in what she'd later realize was premature triumph.

(Um. I've never written Avengers fic at all. Or a three-sentence anything. Forgive the suckiness if it does, indeed, suck. It was just a good prompt.)

FOR MEEEE?!

[personal profile] metonomia 2013-03-12 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Susan unpins her hair and tucks up her dress and sprints after Lucy into the summer grasses, tackling her sister to the ground with very little dignity and no shame. Lucy retaliates with kissing and tickling, and Susan throws her head back, baring her neck and belly in the manner of their favorite subjects. Lucy kisses her again, more deliberately and with greater abandon, and their laughter rises to the sun.

Swallows and Amazons, Dorothea, words on a page
shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)

[personal profile] shallowness 2013-03-13 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Planning the outline of her novel is like planning an expedition, and at times, Dorothea is John, poring over his charts; Titty preparing a map, with Nancy issuing instructions at her elbow; or Susan and Peggy conferring over lists of supplies. Making sure she has all the resources that she needs is like being an able seaman again, stowing away ropes and tins and tins of pemmican and making sure Dick's equipment is safe. Putting pen to paper is like setting sail, but getting the right words on the page is like making adjustments to the sail because of the wind - hard work, but satisfying.

We're not in Narnia anymore...

[personal profile] starbrow 2013-03-13 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Jill thought Eustace would faint from the sheer number of reptiles unique to the Galapagos Islands, where his latest grant had brought them to study endemic reptilian species, but he didn't actually grow trembly-kneed until he sighted the Amblyrhynchus cristatus for the first time.

"Pole," he muttered, tugging urgently on her sleeve, "Pole, look, I'll be damned if that isn't a dragon!"

Sure enough, the huge six-feet horned beast cresting the sand dune looked exactly like one of the Draco Narnia that Eustace had told her all about...just a bit smaller and with less firepower.

Not quite sure if this fits the bill...

He watched as she sped by on the stallion, laughing and leaving a miniature sandstorm in her wake as the Crown Prince tried futilely to catch up to her on his own mount.

"That will be fifty Lions, your Highness," Peridan said with a smile as Prince Corin reluctantly handed over a purse laden with coin. Living in Anvard half the year as Narnia's ambassador, he watched as the three children grew and knew the Tarkheena would never become one of those dull, simpering women that flitted around in the Tisroc's (may he give Tash indigestion) court.

harry potter, petunia, she knows lily would have treated dudley better

[identity profile] redcandle17.livejournal.com 2013-03-13 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Shortly after Dudley's birth Lily had sent a card - a normal card, the happy baby on the cover hadn't moved once - that Petunia tore up and threw away. Petunia remembers this, for some reason, as she wraps a pair of Vernon's old socks to put under the tree. Lily would have given Dudley awful, weird Christmas gifts, she's sure.

[personal profile] grim_lupine 2013-03-13 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The boy cries through the night; he's only an infant, after all. Vernon twitches and grunts in his sleep, but Petunia is entirely awake, the pitiful wails drilling fiercely into her heart where grief is still a new wound, delicately scabbed over; if it were Lily--if it were Dudley--

She rises, goes to Harry, holds him close; settles him to sleep, and cries for her sister.

I have approximately a million feelings about this. Estranged sisters! Horrible babies! Wanting to do right by Harry but fucking everything up! I wrote a story that goes something like that, and also features Petunia and Snape banging awkwardly as grieving. She's just so great, the best character that JK created by accident. A horrible bitch who is necessary and sometimes-good. ~<3

gehayi: (winteriscoming (sasha_davidovna))

[personal profile] gehayi 2013-03-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Lyanna is furious when her father and brothers assume that Rhaegar carried her off against her will (and never mind that she's better at swordplay than Rhaegar ever dreamt of being) and when her arrogant fiancé decides that Rhaegar raped her--she snorts at this--and that her fleeing with Rhaegar, for whom she cares deeply, is all about Robert's pain and Robert's pointless pride.

But the longer she spends with Rhaegar, the more he--fearful that she'll be caught or captured or hurt--tries to keep her locked away in a tower, like a jet and ruby bracelet in the Hand's Treasury, like robes of white velvet and pearlescent gray silk that are too fine to wear even on feast days. He does not understand that she needs to fence, to ride, to run, to smell grass and grain and the sharp scent of snow on the north wind; that she cannot be pent up away from the world, chained to needle and tapestry and embroidery; that she is no tame songbird from the south, but a wild hawk who will not be broken; and that as much as she loves him (and she does, oh, she does), that love is no replacement for the self he's trying--gently, kindly and relentlessly--to take away.

Oz makes these kinds of extravagant compliments (You don't know how lovely you are kinds of compliments) so easily, and Willow, unused to many compliments at all, hardly ever knows how to reply without stumbling and fumbling and generally looking like she's head over heels in love with her boyfriend. "But—what exactly do Narnians believe about Aslan?"

Trust Eustace to want a creed, a scientific and legal definition on which to hang his faith, but how could she boil the bones out of such a wild and playful, joyous and free, living, growing, thrilling thing?

"We know him when we see him."

Sometimes, on dreary days, he remembers that he will not be king, and so she cannot be his queen. But then he remembers his allegiance to the true King, and their love that transcends a man's title. And sometimes, that is enough.

I don't know if that was what you were looking for, but...

Yes yes, they will never be King and Queen, which is sad and regrettable, but they have something so much more precious than that :)

The stars look different at the end of the world. Lucy wonders if it's because the sun is so much larger now, or maybe because she's met stars that walk and talk as she does - or perhaps it is the sweet, shining water that she drinks every day. Drinking starlight, she thinks, and laughs, and wonders what Ramandu'a daughter would say to that.

As they place the crown atop his head, Caspian wonders if he will ever live up to those who came before: the nine other Telmarine kings who bore his name or the Narnian kings and queens of old. As he turns around and faces the cheering crowd, he wonders which legacy they'd prefer him to meet. The answer, he realizes, is they want both, and he really hopes one does not exclude the other.

cofax7: Lantern Waste in the snow (Narnia - Lantern)

[personal profile] cofax7 2013-03-13 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
They had come over the pass in a wave, so the oldest records said, in spidery writing half-lost to age, fire, and mold; thousands of settlers, fleeing drought, invasion, and--so legend had it--civil war, in that rugged, demanding land beyond the mountains.

What they had brought with them had been near as bad as what they fled, as the Narnian stories had it: fire in the woodlands, flames so loud the Dryads' screams could not be heard; plows in the rich soil of the great southern grasslands where the Horses had used to run; battles and prisons and laws binding the magic into smaller and smaller boxes, and then hiding it away entirely.

Caspian wonders, sometimes, if when he comes to Aslan's Country at last, it will only be the blood he himself has shed that he is called to account for.

[identity profile] heliopausa.livejournal.com 2013-03-13 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This is wonderfully densely and evocatively and economically written. It's got whole histories and epics in here, as well as Caspian's terrible fears of race-guiltiness. Wow.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Generations after the Battle of Aslan’s How, the crowning at Beaversdam, the uniting of Old and New Narnia, when the very concept of Old and New had ceased to exist, if they spoke of the name Caspian, they spoke of Caspian X, the last of kings who bore that name, the prince who was raised in the Narnian way by a half-dwarf in secret under the tyranny of Miraz, who embraced Old Narnia and became the peace-bringer and the Seafarer who sailed to the end of the world; they remembered his Queen the Star’s Daughter, his son the Prince who was lost and returned. But how many spoke of the Caspians and so-called-Telmarine-kings-over-Narnia that came before, of whom there must have been as many good, benevolent rulers as there were those of Miraz’s ilk, those generations who were raised to believe Old Narnia to be a fairy tale as Caspian X once did, those who had no one to tell them all those fairy tales were true and encouraged to believe? Who spoke of them at all except to turn them into the enemy, for after all, wasn’t history written by winners?

It's easier to find her feet on this side of the wardrobe, now that she is so much shorter again (and therefore, closer to her toes). Lucy rocks back on her heels, sets her shoulders firm, remembers a crown, and wipes away a tear. She looks down at her feet once more - there they are, so close! - and wonders where they'll lead her next.

Peter is overjoyed to hear of The Gallant's most recent success against the Calormen navy. Lucy's most recent victory at sea only served to strengthen his position negotiating a peace treaty with the Tisroc.

I love that Lucy's ship is named the Gallant (:D), and that she is the one leading the charge in the naval battle, with the underlying implications that they're working as a team to achieve the ultimate goal of peace.

Tashbaan is hot (steaming) and close and tight, and Peter cannot help feeling more and more constricted (fighting to get out of his very skin), something he has never, ever felt in Narnia - not even in the midst of raging battle (because even there is a sort of freedom).

Even the simpering poetry and much-vaunted storytelling of this spiced (and perfumed, Oh, Aslan, the perfume is so cloying) place makes his chest tighten; he cannot relax against the oppressive pile of cushions all around him, and only barely manages to conceal the wince at the very next, "O the delight of my eyes..."

Peter glances at his siblings and as his eye catches Lucy's, he can suddenly breathe easier; she is smiling politely, a smirk gleaming in her eyes, and he realizes (conveniently setting aside the irony of the syrupy words) that she has always been and will always be his greatest delight.

[personal profile] starbrow 2013-03-15 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW! You described the oppressive atmosphere and senses of Tashbaan so vividly, and caught Peter's reaction so perfectly in character. And then the ending made me nod and smile and melt all at once. Gorgeous. These two are not written often enough.
