UPDATE 14 FEBRUARY 2022 -- 3SF 2022 IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  Do continue to fill prompts already posted but the 3SF 2022 is now closed.  We'll be back next year in a new comm (If I can get my act together).  Thank you again!

THIS IS THE NEW POST FOR PART 2 OF THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON -- ALL NEW PROMPTS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE
You may continue to fill prompts (but not leave new ones) at the original Post 1 here but please post new prompts here, not there.  And if you're asking, hey is just me, or did this get enormous really fast? Why yes, yes it did.  Last year, it took us ten days before I opened a new post.  This year, it took us about 5.5 days to get there.  So, by all means, go back and fill in Post 1 and post new prompts here!

Also woops, in an indication of how busy I've been with other things, I neglected to post that for a third year in a row the awesome [personal profile] conuly  started a master list of unclaimed prompts and has been updating it as time permits.  Obviously a huge task! Thank you!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly .

We're at Day 5, give or take and almost 4100 comments.  I'll open up a new post at under 4500, which will likely be tomorrow.  For those of you thinking, oh my goddess, I'll never be able to read all that, yeah, me too.  This week has kicked me in the teeth so I'm looking forward to the slightly slower pace in the next week or two to get caught up.  Please join me! And no, I"m not going to read every prior prompt and you don't have to, either.  If you've had any problems, drop me a message, DM, email or otherwise.  There are lots of new people participating this year, and many familiar monikers, too, and the return of people who haven't been here in a while, so I'll start a friending meme post.

WOW.  As of this morning, 3866 comments on Post 2 and 5362 comments on Post 1.

[personal profile] conuly 's unclaimed prompt list here

There were lots of prompts in the last 48 hours and I lost track and imagine others did as well.  If you really want someone to fill a particular prompt, and assuming they don't mind, I suggest letting them know! (I at least got overwhelmed last week so I missed a lot -- let me know if you would like something via the usual means (DM, email, etc.!!)

You can post your works at the AO3 3SF tag (always super helpful for Yuletide bears and remixes!)

I know some folks might have gotten a bit weary with certain fandoms that weren't their favorite flavor of delicious cake but I won't (and can't) police what's posted and not.  Every year has it's own themes and fandoms and it's always an opportunity to learn about new properties and writers to explore.  This year was awful and I at least had lots of ideas for things I wanted to read and found it harder to muster the brain cells to fill anything and the volume was overwhelming at times.  But that's just the way of it.  3 SF is open for fills all year long so hopefully we can all begin to feel the brain fog lift and a return to normalcy and normal levels of creativity.  For this, I'm especially grateful to the prolific fillers who kept the rest of entertained and distracted.

Thank you to all who participated.  We will see you next year I hope!  I may move 3 SF to its own DW community.  I created one on DW and then didn't want to deal with it all as Feb 1 ticked down.

You have about 5 more hours to get your prompts in for 3SF. They are rushing in!  I'll ask that no new prompts be submitted once I post a "This is the last prompt" but of course please continue to fill. We have A LOT of unfilled prompts.

We're over half way through the Three Sentence Ficathon.  It's cold and miserable in the U.S. and lots of people are really hurting.  This ficathon is intended to be a respite from the awful.  And, if you've been holding off because it's all so overwhelming, as expected, the second post went up, and things quieted down a lot.  It's actually really slow.  So now is the perfect time to check it out.  There are many open prompts and it would be great to see you there.

The smaller, slower
Post 2, is here and the first post (with over 5000 comments so captcha is on) is here

[personal profile] conuly 's post with unfilled prompts (optional -- it's wonderful for some people but really can fill prompts that have already been filled or reprompt something).

And, in very somber news, if you are in Texas, I hope you've found a respite.  If you are looking to connect with aid organizations, either for help or to donate, I found some good links here and here

I have seen at least four new Dreamwidth accounts for 3SF and there are probably others. I'm not great at highlighting the functionalities of Dreamwidth but perhaps some of DW pros could provide links as well as comms you follow and enjoy.

I borrowed this no frills template from [personal profile] st_aurafina and [personal profile] snickfic
Copy and paste it into a reply below (and learn a little HTML while you're at it!)
And be sure to add your preferred pronouns, if you wish.  I forgot to do that -- I'm she/her.

Just an update that we'll be opening a new thread in the next day or so as we're over 4000 comments. At 5000, DW automatically starts a captcha, which is fine but a bit of a pain.  We always see a big slow down when we jump to a new post so if you've been hanging back and feeling overwhelmed, that's a great time to start.  But again, I want to emphasize, start at the last page and go back until you find something and always, always make sure you're reading at "top-level comments only."  Both will help immeasurably.

A huge thanks, again, to[personal profile] conuly who is maintaining a list of unclaimed prompts.

Our word cloud is below. I'm kinda loving the Luke/Din there which I'm embarrassed to say never occurred to me.  I really do fail at shipping.     Never change, friends, never change.

I've got fingers crossed for forthcoming historical prompts and fills from[personal profile] vialethe [personal profile] vialethe  and [personal profile] betony .

If you've got a problem, please drop a line.  You can anon your comments below or find me on Tumblr, Twitter, AO3, the pit of voles, or gmail all at rthstewart.

Some other observations
  • I've been getting some notices of new DW accounts being created! Which is terrific. I can create a friending meme so everyone can start adding one another to your accounts.  Edit to add here is the link.
  • Lots of open, fandom unspecified prompts.
  • Lots of Old Guard and Untamed, both to be expected. Not as much Supernatural, which surprises me.
  • A whole lot of Hamlet and Narnia -- we're very focused.
  • A lot of reclaiming of Harry Potter via fix it fic, and angry fills, in the sense of characters expressing anger at their situations, again to be expected.
  • Liberal ignoring of the 3 sentence limit -- carry on you wonderful people.

So[personal profile] snacky gave me a nudge and asked if I would host 3SF this year and if so, when?

So how does February 1 look?  I typically hold it for the month but I'm open to a shorter period of time or starting it a day or two earlier so we have the benefit of the weekend.  I never did pull my fills from last year to post them.  People continue to post fills to old prompts all year.

I'm not inclined to change the format or rules from last year.  For something this large, it's amazing how well it all works.  The only problems tend to arise from my bad html coding skills.

You can read more about the 3SF rules, such as they are, here.

The most important thing I want to draw your attention to is that given how big and fast this moves, and that fills are, in theory, only 3 sentences, we don't require warnings for spoilers, content warnings or triggers.  You participate at your own risk.  Posters often will voluntarily include tags if they want, but they don't have to.  If that's not going to work for you, this isn't the right place for you.

Edit to add:  People can get really intimidated by the volume and speed and try to not let that sap your enjoyment or discourage participation.  Some people love scrolling through pages of prompts. Others can't do it.  I tell you now the only person who reads most of the prompts and fills is me.  You don't have to read every page, you don't have to participate the whole time, you can fill an already filled prompt, you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  Also, the speed and volume lessen a lot in the last 2 weeks and once we open up a second post, so if it's more comfortable, wait until it slows down a little and they wade in.  We want to see you!

Leave any comments and suggestions in the comments below, including suggested dates.

Thank you!

[personal profile] melannen  has posted in [community profile] fictional_fans  soliciting long read recs that others are cross posting to, including [personal profile] jjhunter
And by all means, if you're up for low stress creating, might I suggest going through the 3SF and filling prompts that catch your stressed eye here and here?

Hang in there my friends.  I'm mentally in a pretty good place (I think?  maybe?) so please come and unload if you need it. I'm here and I'm listening. This is very much like post 9/11 but worse and it all sucks.

Oh and this was adorable, sad, but lovely, people posting to Laura Benanti's twitter timeline pieces of musicals they would now not get to do.

From a convo with my spawn on Friday:

Spawn:  "I want to go to the hardware store and buy a crowbar, water containers, plywood, gas, and extra nails in case essential services are cut."

Me:  "Well, okaaay, if it will make you fee better."

Spawn:  Rambles ambles stares at ceiling for 45 minutes then "Shit!"

Me:  "You forgot to take your meds, didn't you?"

DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR MEDS!

One week to go in the three sentence ficathon and then I official close the posts to new entries. I have no way to enforce this but you should assume that people will stop coming by to see new prompts. I do know that people will respond to post prompts and continue to do so long after the ficathon ends. Get your prompts and fills in! One week to go!

THE THREE SENTENCE FICATHON FOR 2020 IS OFFICIALLY OVER!
PLEASE DON'T POST ANY NEW PROMPTS!
SAVE NEW PROMPTS FOR NEXT YEAR!
DON'T POST NEW PROMPTS AS THEY ARE UNLIKELY TO GET ANY LOVE.
DO CHECK OUT EXISTING PROMPTS AND KEEP FILLING THEM AND COMMENTING ON THEM!  (Seriously,  I still get notifications of 3SF fills from the exchange last year!  I'll get them all year and that's great.  But posting a new prompt isn't likely to get any attention and, at some point, we all move on in our lives (until next year!).

A huge thanks to [personal profile] conuly  for posting and updating all unfilled prompts in a separate post.  Link below.

Thank you everyone and we'll see you next year!

THIS IS THE NEW POST FOR PART 2 OF THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON -- ALL NEW PROMPTS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

At over 4600 comments and responses to Entry 1, it's time to move to Entry 2.  Please post all new prompts and responses here.  You can still respond to and comment on old prompts here.

To that end, the incomparable
[Unknown site tag]conuly has collected all unfilled prompts, organized them by fandom, and linked them back so you can search that list for anything that you missed and fill it!!! a huge thanks for doing this [Unknown site tag]conuly!!

Please post all your new and unfilled prompts here.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
T
his is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What else?

You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth

No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?

Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?

Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might manage it. Or we can just cross-post. If you create one, I'll try to post it and everyone can use it.

How long will it go?

Until February 29, 2020. But the entry stays open permanently.

It wasn't an issue the last 3 times I ran this. COULD be present.  I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. I've been super busy this week so, while my inbox is a disaster, it's wonderful to see 3SF doing so well. I made a new wordcloud from day 5 below. We're already over 3500 comments and at about 4700 or so, I'll open a new post for new prompts and new fills (though of course, you can prompt old ones too.)

Egads. As of about noon ET, having been live barely 36 hours, we were at over 1100 comments. In the States, tonight is Super Bowl Sunday, and we will probably see a lot of activity from those who don't care about the game. If experience is any guide, it will slow down a lot tomorrow once folks go back to work.

Thank you! You all are great! I've been working most of the weekend and so haven't been able to do more than keep half an eye on things and do a couple of fills. I've noticed that comment response fills are frequently adding spoilers to their Good Place posts and I've seen a couple of content warnings. That's really nice of you and thank you! As mentioned on the tin, this is too big and moves to fast for this to be more than the responsibility of responders and readers but it is good of responders to add these in their subject lines when they remember to do so.

A warning now that once this approaches 5,000 comments (and we're going until the end of the month and it's only 2 February) I'm going to have to open a new post. This is because at 5000 comments, Dreamwidth automatically adds captcha tests. As far as I know, I can't turn that off. If I'm wrong, do let me know what I should do. So, at around 5,000, we typically open a second post, and a third, and so on... I don't think I've ever gone beyond 2 but who knows? Activity does fall off at each new post.

If you have any questions or comments, leave them below or message me here, on Tumblr, twitter, or gmail.  I'm rthstewart everywhere.

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

UPDATE 1 HERE- 2 Feb

UPDATE 2 HERE 6 Feb

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
T
his is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

It wasn't an issue the last 3 times I ran this. COULD be present.  I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!
