Happy New Year! Let's hope 2023 doesn't suck

[personal profile] syrena_of_the_lake and I guessed each other's gifts by the summary. (btw, Syrena has written 6 awesome yuletide stories so do check them out).

I wrote one meager gift, though I had fun doing it and read 4 books and a Tor short story to do it.

I didn't know Lady Trent at all but Syrena had given me the first book in the series and it's been in my to read pile forever. I was very cautious with my sign up and pretty much combed other people's requests to find prompts I could do for generous readers. I received three lovely gifts and have read some lovely things by friends including [personal profile] edenfalling [personal profile] vialethe [personal profile] petra and [personal profile] snacky

Well, [personal profile] syrena_of_the_lake wrote I wish I could go with you (The "Leia Shot First" Remix) the fabulous fabulous story of how Luke and Leia the smuggler rescue Prince Han Solo of Corellia (he wears a cape). It's lovely.

Also, Nasimwrites wrote the terrific Acting Accordingly (2459 words) -- it's a lovely, wonderful Not A Problem of Susan story for [personal profile] alexseanchai
And WingedFlight wrote a terrific remix, White Lilies (3330 words) featuring an awesome ace Queen of Narnia for Nasimwrites who had written the amazing secret baby Lucia story To Narnian Ground.
The tags include: magic dreams, secret baby becomes magic baby, Asexual Character, Remix

And... I remixed Wingedflight's Casmund AU, Tidings From Beaversdam. Winged had tagged Caspian's purple shirt as a character -- at my suggestion. So I remixed the story, from the point of view of the shirt. I wrote Caspian/Edmund -- from the point of view Caspian's purple shirt. I've obviously lost my mind -- I  mean we're all on severely diminished capacity these days -- stressed and depressed and barely functioning cognitively.  At least that's true of me.  I hope you're doing better.  But I wrote a story with an article of clothing as the main character.  I discovered the Purple Shirt of Sex if an AO3 tag -- I didn't use it as it appears to be specifically related to shirt Cumberbatch wears in Sherlock.

blazing in gold and quenching in purple (the I'm too sexy for my shirt remix) (3674 words)

[personal profile] melannen  has posted in [community profile] fictional_fans  soliciting long read recs that others are cross posting to, including [personal profile] jjhunter
And by all means, if you're up for low stress creating, might I suggest going through the 3SF and filling prompts that catch your stressed eye here and here?

Hang in there my friends.  I'm mentally in a pretty good place (I think?  maybe?) so please come and unload if you need it. I'm here and I'm listening. This is very much like post 9/11 but worse and it all sucks.

Oh and this was adorable, sad, but lovely, people posting to Laura Benanti's twitter timeline pieces of musicals they would now not get to do.

From a convo with my spawn on Friday:

Spawn:  "I want to go to the hardware store and buy a crowbar, water containers, plywood, gas, and extra nails in case essential services are cut."

Me:  "Well, okaaay, if it will make you fee better."

Spawn:  Rambles ambles stares at ceiling for 45 minutes then "Shit!"

Me:  "You forgot to take your meds, didn't you?"

DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR MEDS!

[personal profile] snacky and [personal profile] aurilly have run an amazing exchange.

There are stories and books that I read occasionally that make me abandon any hope of ever at my advanced age becoming a true writer because the works are so gorgeous, so clever, so stunning. I've come to feel that way about The Rule Threes Raid written for me.

There are a number of other NFE stories that are just astonishing. (I'm running out of adjectives). There are a number of stories with different takes on AU Aravis, AU Silver Chair and playing with concepts of memory, who forgets what and when and how and the role Tumnus plays in it. That's something that is lovely about the NFE is that there are often in a single exchange, multiple interpretations of related ideas. It's really cool.

I'd already recc'd The Case of the Descending Debutante, which I loved, and if you are a fan of the corkscrew British comedy genre, the acerbically dry and quintessentially English wit of Wodehouse coupled with the wackiness of Douglas Adams, you must, must, must read
Psmith Giantslayer
(8859 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia - C. S. Lewis/Psmith - P. G. Wodehouse
Rating: General Audience
Relationships: Mike Jackson/Rupert Psmith
Characters: Rupert Psmith, Edmund Pevensie, Mike Jackson, Susan Pevensie
Summary: Or, how the glorious Affair of the Motor Car on the Senate House Roof became the rather more alarming Affair of the Enormous Giants.
(Psmith, however, was enchanted. "Such nobility of mien,“ he told Mike. "Such an air of enterprise and derring-do! Who is this paragon of Cambridge manhood, may I ask?”
“I think his name is Pevensie,” said Mike.)
... "Your sister?" said Mike, a little doubtfully.
"She's in her final year at Girton," said Edmund. "Did some time with the Women's Auxiliaries as a driver near the end of the war. Dab hand with a screwdriver, is Susan."
Psmith shook his head sadly. "I was given to believe that Girton was naught but a lonely outpost in the wilderness, practically a shack surrounded by howling fens," he told Edmund. "How very glad I am to hear that this was mere calumny. We should be honoured to accept the assistance of this beauteous lady mechanic."

I loved this one too, with Jill, Silver Chair AU where Eustace and Jill stay, and ENTWIVES
