3 Sentence Ficathon

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

CaramelSilver isn’t running the awesome 3 sentence ficathon this year, but she said I could do it in her place!!  (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!)

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

How long can it go?
CaramelSilver kept the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon up for a month.  I'd suggest closing it on Sunday, April 7, 2013.  How does that sound? (edit:  If we reach 5,000 comments sooner, I'll start a new one).

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

As  [personal profile] lady_songsmith explains, for the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine created a delicious account to archive the 3 Sentence Ficathon.   [personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, so, here is the account (nothing current added yet, though): https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

edited March 13, 2013 to fix box coding problem (thanks to those who helped!) and to add link to friending meme
edited March 15, 2013 to add information on archiving.
edited March 24, 2013 to close post to new prompts.

Robin Hood, Robin, "I laugh because I must not cry, that is all, that is all."

(More than a little taken from Robin McKinley's Outlaws of Sherwood)

In Sherwood Forest, and throughout Nottinghamshire, it had been more of a game, for those few years; oh, yes, he had killed, but in self-defense, for the most part, and so many of the Sheriff's men had been Normans that it had been more than half patriotism, the century-old resistance of the Saxon to the Norman invader--justifiable, if not always entirely honorable, and what should that kind of honor matter to the son of a forester?

But in the brutal sun of the Holy Land, with the screaming of the horses and the men; the links of his mail blistering the skin beneath; and the women of the towns weeping over their dead--well, he wondered sometimes if he had not made the wrong choice after all, that day the King had taken up the lot of them, John and Much and Will and Marian and all (and Robin himself), and made them choose. Death or the cross, the King had said, and of course Robin had taken the cross; but oh, the blood on his hands, the smell of death all around, and the weary, heart-broken look on Marian's face were enough to make him doubt his every decision.

There used to be an actual, honest to God list of people he didn't like--terrorists, some foreign dictators, couple House Democrats who used to get up in his face, couple Senate Republicans who turned on him once he stopped the military contracts, half a dozen pop stars he really just can't stand and not just because he slept with them, and Wesley Crusher, but Hammer was such a dickly little tool he'd never even merited mention.

Pepper had . . . extensive files, lists, graphs, for fuck's sake, annotated inventories of everyone he'd ever fucked fought bought from sold to glanced at with passing interest; she had a color coded index of his motherfucking ties, and Tony had never realized that this was how she'd done the job until the day she wasn't there to do it any more.

That day, Tony didn't need a list; there was now only one person on it.

And Sam can truly call himself a gardener.

She has escaped him for millenia, flirting around someone much more vibrant, someone who claims in poetry, song and action that they know of love, but he is older than all of them combined.

He is patient. He knows of love, has known every account of it, and in the end, they all come succumb to his.

Digory had never seen anything so beautiful as he walked reverently through the tall silver trees with their golden leaves, and desperately he tried to remember what the Lion had said about the tree with the apple he needed. Here and there he caught glimpses of a flash of grey above or to the side of him through the trees, but he worked to stay focused on his task; he felt as though he could stay here forever, but knew that would not help Mother. At last, he came to the centre of the Wood, where stood a tree slightly larger than the others, at least in girth, and it was full of magnificent silver apples that seemed to beckon to him; gathering his courage, he stepped forward and plucked one.

"Othryoneus of Cabesos has promised us his allegiance," Aeneas pauses, struggling to find the right words to announce this diplomatic triumph, " in exchange for the chance to make his regard known to the Princess Cassandra."

Priam's eyes shine with triumph; his daughter Creusa's smile (...and how had Aeneas never noticed her before, as kind and good as she is?) wavers with sympathy; and Cassandra's expression is as inscrutable as it has ever been.

"I will also," he adds as an afterthought, "return to Dardania with the morning tide."

Halcyon Days These Could Be

(*glares* This is so unfair...)

He takes her walking along the riverbank, and she marvels at the wild beauty of his country – now that she is here with him at last, she understands why he fights so hard for it, the passion that ties him to the land – nearly as much as she marvels at him, at the turn her life has finally, finally taken.

He stills her suddenly with a hand on her arm and a finger to her lips (oh, how she loves that he finally has the right to touch her) and points to a small hollow in the bank, where a bright little kingfisher sits in its nest - at peace, she thinks, like us, hidden away in its tiny corner of the earth, safe and sound, and she knows this isn't true (she's known nowhere was safe since the night her father died, and her cousin began to haunt her dreams), but just for now, just for this moment, she wants desperately to believe it can be.

Her lips curve beneath his fingers, and she guides his other hand to her belly, watching his eyes light up in understanding and joy, and prays please, please.

(aaaand that's only one of my favorite songs ever. Pls to stop being so awesome now!)

For a time, any lamplight is hateful, nearly as hateful as his mother's soft, triumphant smiles, but this changes the day he hears the flowers speak to him with the voice of his half-sister; from her throne deep below the earth, her voice whispers, foolish boy, you fault your love for betraying trust where none was given?

Do you not care to know what has become of her, how she has died and returned for love of you? the voice calls, and he finds, rubbing the scarred patch of skin at his shoulder, that he does want her still, very much.

And so he goes to seek her out, and raise the sparks of their love once more.

And she'd checked herself before saying "you've," as if there was still some discovery he was going to make, maybe someday soon, so he just nods and smiles.

When Eris comes to her and demands how best to avenge the insult, of course Psyche gives her the idea for the apple, for she has precious few allies among her husband’s family as it is, and his aunt, though unpopular, is not one to cross; only later is she able to force herself to reflect on what must come next.

She’ll have to introduce a human into the fray to divert the gods’ attention and draw their anger, of course; the war to come will be thick with the stench of bones and the drip of blood, -- but how much more terrible to imagine the same horrors descending on pristine Olympus!– and far better, she thinks, to destroy one city rather than the world.

Psyche hides her face with her hands for shame and wonders when she began to think as an immortal.

Here and now, on a rare picnic with Aeneas as he describes the strange sights he saw on his last campaign, she’s safe.

He turns to her, takes her hand, smiles (and oh, how it warms her heart, but he will smile like that, in that sad, uncertain way, at Lavinia when he searches for her face in the crowd after he’s slain her intended, at Dido as the first winds fill his sails to take him away from Carthage, at Creusa when he stretches out a hand towards her phantom amidst the rubble of Troy, oh her sisters, oh her city, oh, the Achaeans approach and with them, Agamemmon of the blood-stained hands and Iphigenia’s hungry ghost and the rage of Clytemnestra and the bathing hall and the labrys)—and asks, with the undercurrent of fright that never fails to remind her where they will always go wrong: “Cassandra, what is it?”

“Nothing,” she replies, because she is always safe and never safe, always truthful, always a liar, “tell me another story, my friend.”
