3 Sentence Ficathon

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

EDIT!  THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS,  PLEASE POST NEW PROMPTS
HERE!

CaramelSilver isn’t running the awesome 3 sentence ficathon this year, but she said I could do it in her place!!  (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!)

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

How long can it go?
CaramelSilver kept the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon up for a month.  I'd suggest closing it on Sunday, April 7, 2013.  How does that sound? (edit:  If we reach 5,000 comments sooner, I'll start a new one).

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

As  [personal profile] lady_songsmith explains, for the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine created a delicious account to archive the 3 Sentence Ficathon.   [personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, so, here is the account (nothing current added yet, though): https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

There was a small clatter as the silver spoon landed on the front path, and Hamfast looked up at Mr. Bilbo's departing visitor. The ill-tempered face scrunched even sharper as he nodded and spoke politely, "Afternoon, Mistress Lobelia." She hurried through the front gate without replying as he bent to retrieve the purloined utensil.

One battle lost will not necessarily cost you an entire war. This she knows is true (even if it is not for women to know) and life goes on; she finds new lips to kiss, unfurls her tongue to sing new songs and plucks the strings of the lyre until her fingers ache more than her heart.

Sometimes she will remember another whose praises she’d sung, and the loss will weigh as heavy on her as polished bronze.

On this Winter's Night With You

[personal profile] vialethe 2013-03-20 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yule is a completely new experience for Aravis; so is snow, and roasted chestnuts, and Father Christmas, and so much more, until she feels her head will burst or her fingers fall off from the chill that's worked its way into her very bones, so much worse than even the desert at midnight.

So when Cor comes along, speaking of another new tradition to show her (he deals so much better than she with the climate and culture, but then, he was born, if not raised, to it) she protests, even when he pulls her along in her heavy wool robes to a room with a roaring fire burning, hot as the Calormene sands.

"It's a lovely treat," she says, "but honestly Cor, even a fire this large can't really be called anything new," and that's when he gives her that cheeky grin, points to a bit of greenery tacked to the doorframe above them, and gives her the gift of his first kiss.

*squeals with glee* I think this fills my Sophie- (and Howl/Sophie-loving heart) with an unimaginable amount of delight. And bonus Abdullah and the soldier being so perfectly themselves--!!!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

(Also: because I simply have to ask this of everyone I know who's read this book because I can never quite figure it out: when do you think Howl realized who the cat and kitten really were? We know Sophie had no clue, but Howl certainly would guess that she'd land somewhere in the area; however, the genie always resents getting milk and fish for the cats so much, and there's that part where Midnight first shows up, investigates the bottle, and the genie seems to genuinely believe she's going to eat him, so...?

[personal profile] minutia_r 2013-03-21 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, I don't know, it's been a while since I read it actually--but I can easily imagine Howl a) feigning reluctance to provide food for his wife and child and b)being genuinely afraid of what Sophie will do to him after he turned her into a cat. She's a scary lady, and he is a coward.

(And thank you! Abdullah's dialogue is a treat to write. Some people find it annoying, but they have no poetry in their souls.)

I hope this is okay because I don't know a whole lot about Narnia but I loved the idea of the prompt, and Bridge to Terebithia, so I tried!

Jesse lifted his head, straightening his crown at the sight of the newcomer - a girl whom appeared to be close to his age, perhaps a little younger, and carrying an air of playfulness about her despite her various regalia.

"I am Queen Susan, one of the Queens of Narnia," the girl said, bowing, "and I seek to know more about your kingdom of Terebithia."

Jesse smiled as he stood and bowed to the queen, introducing himself as the King of Terebitha, and dutifully transcribing about his people, Squogres, and the Giant Troll that once plagued his land years before, whom they both stop to wave to at one point -- all the while, he smiled and wondered why his heart beat so.

The stark reality of death is staring her in the face through the three persons lying broken and motionless in front of her, each different, yet it is clear that they are related. She presses her fist to her mouth in a valiant effort to stay the tears that are threatening to come, and years of practice keeps the emotion in its place--hidden until the proper time, and this is not that time. After all, she is Susan Pevensie, and one's reputation is all one has in a moment like this.

El is consummate power, yes, and she took him in the oldest of days as a suitable father for her children, and the coupling has turned out well enough. These days, though, he has begun again one of those power-mad games in which he forsakes most of their creation and her role in it to choose and test a certain people - this happens periodically, but now he seeks to eliminate all other powers. Her name has been wiped from lips and books, and if he comes crawling back again, he'll see that this time it is impossible to forgive.

Doctor Who/Community, Abed & the Doctor, this is the darkest timeline

[personal profile] pleonasm 2013-03-23 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
You'll have to forgive me for adding a fourth sentence, this kind of ran away with me.

*

He wasn't the Inspector, but Dark Abed was beyond caring at this point (a fact that would have horrified any of his former friends, had they known); Abed watched him prance around the console room of a police box that was entirely too large on the inside, and he said nothing as the Doctor rambled on about tangled timelines and setting this one right.

Abed's felt beard itched, and he scratched it, contemplating if he wanted a return to a brighter timeline; perhaps he had, long ago, but now he hardly cared (or so he was telling himself, biting back half a dozen questions and trying not to wonder who would win in a fight, the Doctor or the Inspector -- of course it would have to be the Inspector, but there was something in the Doctor's eyes that frightened even Abed).

"I've got something in sick bay for the glue," the Doctor said, his jacket flapping as he pressed buttons and turned dials and hummed; "so you can go get yourself cleaned up, and then we'll sort all this out!"

Abed wanted to believe him, wanted to see where all the corridors led; he was halfway down the hallway before he let himself whisper, "It's bigger on the inside," and admitted that it made slightly more sense that way.

Many Are My Names

[personal profile] buttonloops 2013-03-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
WHEE THANK YOU

After a few hundred centuries in Valinor, Olorin ran out of pipeweed. Shortly after, he decided he'd had quite enough of rest and eternal bliss—he'd never thought he would miss being pestered with questions by small people, but it seemed he did—and he betook himself back to Middle Earth, where he soon found a decent position as resident mysterious old wizard to one Uthr Pendragon, who had tolerable pipeweed and a penchant for disguises. When he got sick of the questions, he contrived to have himself shut up in a rock and took a nap; in those days there was always a demand for mysterious old wizards and he had no trouble finding work when he came out.

This arrangement worked well for quite awhile, but then the age of rationalism came along and the demand for resident wizards (which had fallen in the days of Elizabeth—but the quality of pipeweed improved significantly at the same time, so he'd not troubled about it) absolutely plummeted to the point where he had to completely overhaul his appearance (he'd always enjoyed disguises, though the hawk nose tended to persist) and go in for mundane crime-solving—boring at times, but the mouse-colored dressing gown was close enough to familiar, the pipeweed was more plentiful than ever before, and Watson was absolutely superb at asking questions.

Thank you! I'd been hoping someone would go for that pairing. Caroline's crush on Elizabeth has been a what-if in P&P that I've always wanted to explore, although I'd always seen it as unrequited, but this works very well too! Go for it, Caroline!

Although let me say poor Darcy ;-)

OMG I have such a soft spot for those two and their relationship! Wrote fic about it and everything:)

After the coronation, Perseus turns to her with an expression of pure panic; he was raised to be useful in a fisherman's hut, her husband, and when he speaks, she already knows what to expect: "I--I don't know what to do now."

But unlike him, Andromeda was born the daughter of Cassiopeia of Aethiopia, who took the forgotten port of Joppa and turned it into a marvel that even the gods envied; who encouraged her sturdy ships and brave captains to explore every corner of the known world; who married an insignificant son of Egypt and transformed him into a king worthy to sit beside her.

"Fortunately for you," she says, smiling, "I do."

Lovely! I love how unsure Perseus is, and how Andromeda knows exactly how to reassure him, thinking to herself about the parallels between her and Cassiopeia's marriages.

:D Thank you! I am pretty inordinately fond of these two--mostly because they seem to have a perfectly nice, functional life after their main myth, which actually allows for a rare happy ending!

Keep the Earth Below My Feet

[personal profile] tiny_white_hats 2013-03-21 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Persephone is a botanist, he learns over dinner (Jibneh with pomegranate for her and Schwarma for him, at Elysium, the greatest Middle Eastern restaurant he's ever frequented), because she is in love with the sweet, dizzy brightness of spring and she loves to watch the first flowers grow. She smiles brightly, like the world's loveliest sunflower, when she speaks of her job, and he tells her about his work as an archaeologist, as a collector of memories and souls, about how he reaches into the earth to find lost relics and to hear the stories dead men couldn't ever tell again.

He is quickly enraptured by her, by her wheat-gold hair and river blue eyes, by her unconscious, nervous gestures that are quick like startled rabbits and her laugh like early morning birdsong, and so he kisses her, gently, when they part ways at the restraunt's door; her breath tastes like pomegranate and he is certain, irrevocably so, that this will not be their final meeting, that she will return to him once more.

"How many did you say there were?" Peter asks as he gingerly steps over two more.

"Seventeen, Your Majesty," replied one of his Guards, after sending a reassuring glance the way of several proud mothers, and Peter drew in a sharp breath.

"And what are they all doing in Cair Paravel's front yard?" the king whispered loudly, bemusement and disbelief written all over his face.

Amelia Peabody, Sethos (+Amelia/Emerson), The Tale of Isis and Osiris
lbilover: (pouring tea)

[personal profile] lbilover 2013-03-21 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The tale of Isis and Osiris had been Sethos's blueprint, giving form and structure to the anger and resentment burning inside him for so long. But along the way, his carefully constructed plans collapsed like an ancient tomb. He fell in love with Isis, and even worse, discovered that he actually liked and respected Osiris - damn the man.

:D I love this so much--the imagery of the blueprint echoing in the collapsing tomb. But more than that, the acknowledgement of the weird relationship of mutual respect these three develop--this is wonderful, thank you so much! ♥

You're very welcome! You post the best prompts, I have to say. :)))

One of the things I love about the Amelia Peabody books is that weird relationships of mutual respect that develops among the three of them. Sethos almost seems like a cartoon villain at first and yet he turns out to be anything but.

Medieval English History, Richard III/Anne Neville, we are young

As It Might Have Been

[personal profile] vialethe 2013-03-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"What will it be like when we are married, do you think?" Anne asks, tiny and delicate as a bird, perched on the window seat of her mother's solar, her little feet swinging under the edge of her skirt.

Richard can hear the clamor of the other boys rising up from the training yard; he knows he will be mocked if found here, yet he can't bring himself to care - Anne is much better company that any of the boys, even at her tender age.

"Why, it will be splendid, my lady," he says, stretching and trying to ignore the pain in his back that seems to grow every day, grateful that he does not need to ignore Anne's look, because she alone never seems to notice the way his shoulders twist more with each month, each inch that he grows, "and we will be the happiest people in all the realm, and have a dozen plump children," and Anne giggles, and shyly takes his hand in hers.

Thanks! I wanted to write them when they were still happy and not too many awful things had happened to them, which meant going waaaaay back. 'Gentle' and 'sweet' are pretty much the first things that come to mind when I think of Anne!

Well, you already know I think your Richard/Anne is fabulous, but this--ack! Anne never notices his shoulder! Richard likes hanging out with her better than the other boys! And Richard's prediction!--*sobs at horrible contrast to what actually happens*

Aww, thanks.
vialethe: (Lamia - Waterhouse)

I warned you this was sad and awful...

[personal profile] vialethe 2013-03-21 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
He finds her in tears in her bedchamber, heaving with gasping sobs, and when he kneels at her feet and asks in that sad, desperate voice what has happened, the only word she can manage to choke out is a soft, "Blood."

All in a moment, his face clears, and he smiles gently at her, stroking her cheek and saying, "But we are young still, my dear Anne - there will be other babes yet, you'll see, and no need to weep over your woman's blood so."

He is called away then, and leaves with a kiss pressed to her cheek; she manages a tremulous smile for him and clutches her hand tighter around her bloodied handkerchief, trying to breathe deeply, trying not to cough again, trying desperately to keep her secret from him just a little longer.
betony: (Default)

So you did! But *sob* anyway....

[personal profile] betony 2013-03-24 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is heartbreaking but beautiful, just so you know--him kneeling at her feet and being so sweet (and of course their one kid has just died unexpectedly, and *sob* for that, too) and her realizing what's going on but wanting to shield him (and perhaps herself, too) from it just a bit longer and-and--
*sniffle* This is lovely, that is all.

Re: So you did! But *sob* anyway....

[personal profile] vialethe 2013-03-25 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
POOR BABIES, I know!! It really was a total 'rocks fall, everyone dies' for them there at the end. I felt so bad writing Richard so sweet and with such hope (or at least putting on a good face for Anne) knowing what was to come for them...sigh.
