3 Sentence Ficathon

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

EDIT!  THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS,  PLEASE POST NEW PROMPTS
HERE!

CaramelSilver isn’t running the awesome 3 sentence ficathon this year, but she said I could do it in her place!!  (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!)

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

How long can it go?
CaramelSilver kept the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon up for a month.  I'd suggest closing it on Sunday, April 7, 2013.  How does that sound? (edit:  If we reach 5,000 comments sooner, I'll start a new one).

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

As  [personal profile] lady_songsmith explains, for the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine created a delicious account to archive the 3 Sentence Ficathon.   [personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, so, here is the account (nothing current added yet, though): https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

"Your Majesty, may I present my brother, Sherlock Holmes," Mycroft said, with a stiff, rather nervous bow.
Mycroft watched with relief as Sherlock also bowed, but his relief disappeared completely when, by way of conversation, Sherlock said, "I can deduce from the look of relief upon your face, the faint scent of that cheap lavender soap in common use in most public facilities, and the small piece of toilet tissue attached to your left shoe, that Your Majesty has recently been to the loo."
It came as no surprise to anyone that both Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes were quickly removed from the Queen's presence and ordered not never to return to the palace again.

It was a silly dream but, just once, Tonks wanted to feel like she was living a normal life with a normal husband instead of the usual race toward the inevitable war. She packed a basket with all their favorite foods before the harder task of pulling Remus away from his books and scrolls. Even if it was only for a few hours, this would be a memory that would carry her through the fighting, long enough for their next picnic under the bright sun.

(not at all sure what I've made, here, but I do know I love these two, so I had to try!)

If it had been all adventures all the time, neither of them could have born the strain: Miles would have gone half mad worrying about Hen and she'd have cut his throat to stop him mothering her, so it was just as well that their dull days outnumbered the extraordinary by such a margin.

They spent summers in the country and winters in town; they travelled the countryside together, first meeting family, then making family and raising it, their children managing not to suffer unduly for their parents' economy of pragmatism and extravagance of whimsy. Hen didn't think she could have asked for anything more sublime: their days played out like the notes of a symphony, the only true tragedy their inability to ever play the piece twice.

It isn't until he has pushed back the Dark that he begins to realize the things that go on in the world that are bad, but not of the Dark. Despite the power that he wields, there is nothing he can do when the boy that Mary likes goes out of his way to embarrass her in front of his friends. (Oh, YES! Fun! And Merriman is Olórin in this one, too)

Bran watched his father's ship (it was the Pridwen, he knew, but had he heard right when he thought he heard Merriman call it Vingilot?) leave him behind, himself and the rest of the Six, two Old Ones, three Men, and the Pendragon alone where the Midsummer Tree once stood. What he knew he had heard correctly, however, were Arthur's last words to him before he set sail to wherever he was going (he was certain Merriman had called it Aman with a wistful sigh), "We will meet again beyond the sea, my son. It is not impossible, after all, for the Heirs of Isldur to come to Valinor, as I have shown, and though you have made the choice of Lúthien, my heart forbodes we shall meet again."

(I feel like I accidentally quoted Tolkien an eensy bit. And oof, it almost got depressing there for a moment!)

I love writing these, because I just have so many genius moments! The Choice of Lúthien bit was one of them, and honestly, that is now permanently part of my headcanon, as is the Heir of Isildur thing.
Here's more, as a present back for all these prompts! (none of them lost their memory)

Later, after Merriman left and the adrenaline of battle wore off, those of the Six who remained sat in a circle, though not a Circle, on the crest of one of the beautiful Welsh hills. The Drews were silent, Jane fondling the blue translucent stone Bran had given her, but the albino boy turned to Will and asked about something that had aroused his curiosity, "Why did Merriman call the Pridwen Vingilot?"

The Watchman answered with a smile, "I think it is time to sing you the Lays of Beleriand, as my master Merriman did for your father after his first great battle to keep the ancient traditions alive."

(As I write this, the only thing I can think is 'Merlin could sing?' but then I think 'Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy. Of course he could sing.')
...And yes, I really did do that with the Lays of Beleriand

(Let's face it, I gave this prompt so that I could fill it myself :P but feel free to write your own version of this.)

(What is this I don't even ....the first stage of fandom grief?)
----

Dear Monday, we were never really friendly and for a long time, I hated your guts, until you chose to adorn yourself with that adorable show, and I was swept off my feet, smitten, in love; I sung you praises and shouted my love from the rooftop.

But now… it’s time to admit to myself, that despite all those wonderful times we spent together, creating so many breath-taking memories, all this time, it wasn’t you whom I loved, but what you could give me; it is selfish, I know, but now that the gifts you used to bestow on me are all gone, I find I cannot stay, because without that glamour, all your flaws and blemishes come rushing back to me, reminding me why we were, at the root of it, so incompatible.

So to save us from pain, isn’t it better for us to part way here and admit to ourselves that though what we had was beautiful while it lasted, now that the firework has died, we can never, ever get back together?

You know what? I'm going to make this a proper oneshot at some point. At the very least it needs to be a drabble. But in the meantime, more continuation...

The wizard seemed to notice his apparent bewilderment, and tried to clarify, "The Heirs of Isildur is a general term for your line, a bloodline of Kings, of the race of Númenor. I knew well one of the greatest, Aragorn Elessar, several -I can't remember exactly how many; I haven't been keeping proper count- Ages of the Sun ago."

The young King looked dumbfounded, "Umm, Merlin, how long have you been alive?"

Oh, I love making Merlin confuse Arthur! I've just discovered a new favorite pastime! I do feel just the tiniest bit sorry for him, though; what with Mithrandir heaping all that new information on him in one go. My Olórin needs to relearn tact.

[personal profile] ailavyn_siniyash 2013-03-19 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I can't help myself; it's too much fun. Here's more:

"I have been alive since before the Music of the Ainur, before Ëa, before Melkor became Morgoth the origin of all evil, before the Sun and the Moon."

Arthur stared.

Merlin just kept talking, oblivious or not caring about the King's confused and awed emotions, "But now, back to the topic of Andúril and your great heritage."
ailavyn_siniyash: (Default)

[personal profile] ailavyn_siniyash 2013-03-19 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's certainly one way to end it! Here's another (which is also crack!fic, I believe):

Five hours later, Merlin finally finished his long explanation of Arthur's genealogy and the stories surrounding it.

"So, you're saying that I can trace my forbears back to some legendary Elves (I didn't even know Elves existed), some legendary Men, and thus, some legendary half-Elves, one of whom decided to live as a Man on some island that no longer exists, and then whose descendants fought evil too, like him and the rest of them, and that the Line of Lúthien will apparently never fail, and I'm descended from her and my sword is actually called Andúril and it belonged to yet another of these ancestors and then it got broken and was reforged and used yet again?"

"Yes, I believe you have the jist of it, though your summary could have been worded somewhat more elegantly."

Oh, and THANK YOU ALL so much for all the kind words!

The stranger smiles (and yes, he should be a stranger, because if he was unknown to her yet dined at their wedding table her husband should not have asked her if she recognised him) and asks if she may grace even a blind man with her beauty on this happiest of days.

Afterwards she thinks she should have known, second sight or not, the moment he placed such familiar hands upon her face.

Oh, this is just as understated and tender and bittersweet as I'd hoped -- thank you!

Journey's End

[personal profile] lbilover 2013-03-16 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Once Sam thought his journey's end had arrived in the darkness of Cirith Ungol, with Frodo lost to him forever.

Later, he believed it lay in the Shire, in the blossoms of the mallorn and the wail of a new-born babe.

But his true journey's end came much later, in a far western land, in the arms of Frodo, waiting for him on the shore.

That was beautiful. Sometimes, it's hard to tell when you've reached the end, isn't it? : )

That's very true, and for Sam especially given the path of his life. Thank you!!

Oh honey, this is lovely... and just what I was hoping for! I've always thought it was so telling that Sam said "I'm back" when he returned to Bag End after Frodo left, and not "I'm home". It's when he meets Frodo again that he is truly home--and at journey's end--at last. Thank you for this!

I think that had to be a very deliberate choice of word by Tolkien, 'back' instead of 'home'. So yeah, I agree with you completely. And I'm glad this is what you had mind!! Yay!!

not as shippy as I meant it to be, sorry

Touya waits on the edge of his seat until the precise moment the credits end, managing to make even painful politeness seem insulting, before he turns to Hikaru. "Now will you take out the goban?"

Hikaru would roll his eyes harder if he hadn't spent the entire length of the movie – his favourite! – watching Touya out of the corner of his eye and kind of wishing they were playing go instead.

There is a quiet splendor in the intricacies of data. Frustration builds up inside of him when his calculations fail him and he is losing, lost, and left behind. But feelings are data, and he records them as well to track the patterns of his loss to find reasons for that, too.
