But wait, there's more, Gift Fic

As a thank you to my amazing friends who did the TSG Calendar, with LARM being the chief instigator, I wrote a short fic that was posted and then AO3 crashed last night. Does anyone know what the cause was? LARM said something about it being a Mando fic? I saw Tumblr going on about Chapter 10 of something called Heat Wave.

In any event, this is Susan and Tebbitt. It took me FOREVER to get it going -- absolutely demoralizing to stare at 400 words for 2 days. And then I got them out of Ukraine and it finally started to move. I go back to this part of the world a lot for my espionage because I lived there right after the wall came down and it's all still very vivid. We never made it all the way to Ukraine, though our colleagues did. The Balkans were a very very strange place in those days.

The city that they are in, Dnipropetrovsk, now Dnipro, was a "closed" city by sometime in the early 1950s  because of the manufacturing and in particular its contributions to the Soviet defense programs and ICBM development.  I have no idea if spies actually moved along the river tributaries of the Black Sea and were I really serious about writing this as a genuine spy novel, that would require a lot of research.
blather about espionage and sacrifice )

There's A LOT going on here. Thank you!

some pics instead -- TSG and Thorin!

Work work work. The 7 days leading up to Mother's Day was 2 AM every night. I am incredibly fortunate to have a job and my privilege is immense. If anyone is interested in a discussion of supply chain logistics, the national stockpile, the Executive Order and fact sheet just released this evening on the national stockpile, "Buy American" and its implications for pharmaceuticals, drug importation, N95 masks from China, and Chloroquine Phosphate, Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate or remdesivir, leave a comment.

Instead, behold, the amazing [personal profile] syrena_of_the_lake has been making some covers for me for The Stone Gryphon. And they are INCREDIBLE. I can't quite figure out how to get the Palace Guard one. It's here.  You can find Syrena's lovely stories here.

Look at these.Hopefully pictures will be behind the cut.

Gorgeous covers for TSG )

Also, Thorin Corgishield was very needy today as I was trying to pull reopening information from the CDC website.

Black White Gray In between, AW, Heart, Crow and the Traitor Noll

So, this is only for those who are really super interested in the backstory behind this story.

First, some research! Oxford Famine Relief Committee will become Oxfam. Research on Oxfam took me here and here. Edith Pye was one of the founders of the famine relief committees and others who were involved included Vera Brittain and the Canon of the Oxford University Church at the time.

It was a late decision was to add Helen and Briony. I was trying desperately to get this story done as an NFE treat and I realized that there was an enormous about of follow up -- Lucy going into the mountains to find the Witch's Forgotten Remnant and bring them home. I needed some way to handle that economically. At the same time [personal profile] einahpets -- the fabulous fan artist who contributed art to this year's NFE -- posted a short prompt -- essentially, children in adult bodies and others finding out about Narnia. Welp, that's my jam but how could I do a whole separate story? And then, voila, add Helen and Briony and all the problems were solved.

Chapter 18 of AW was supposed to be titled The Least of My Brothers and Sisters, which if you've now read Black, White and the Gray Wolf In Between, also fits. I will post an update to AW indicating that the story ends at chapter 15 -- it's a logical break, and will then begin posting Heart and Crow Make the Peace, with Chapters 16 and 17 of AW becoming new chapters 1 and 2 (with some clean up) and Black White and Gray as the new chapter 3.

And on to much blather about where this story came from and that it has been 10 years in the making. Ware, this is only for those who are really interested in the backstory of the backstory and some things about what should be in here and isn't, yet.

More for the very few who might be interested )

Last, though I should be working on answering reviews and then jumping to the conclusion of Star Husband and then back to this, several readers, after reading Briony showing up in Helen's dining room really, REALLY want another character appearance. So... maybe I'll get that done this week.<
Thank you so much. I could never had done it without you.

We’re all fine here. For the first time since 1995, we did not lose power during a major weather event. Thank you for the good wishes.

Halloween pumpkins

And no one in Real Life knows why I had a wolf and a crow Halloween pumpkins.
SHHHHHH!!!!

I did look for a rat, but they were hard and creepy and I had to bake 4 dozen cupcakes, 3 dozen brownies and many, many batches of individually decorated roll and cut Star Wars cookies for the school bake sale, so a rat pumpkin did not happen. The squirrels are already gnawing away at them.

OMG, it's SO LONG! A TSG Short Cut

So, I've started this new thing called, Part 3 of The Stone Gryphon, Apostolic Way, and there’s no way a reasonable person could possibly figure out what has already happened in the previous 500,000 words of Part 1 and 2 and the attendants Narnia-based stories.  Is there a short cut?  The beginning of Chapter 1 to Part 3 in fact does include a brief synopsis of what has gone on before.

But, for [livejournal.com profile] animus_wyrmis and others who might wish to read a few more things, as I will concede that not every chapter or word is crucial, here are a few shorthand links that might allow you to get a flavor for things and/or to focus on the things that interest you.

This chapter
is a Very Important Chapter (hereinafter VIP Chapter). Really. If you read nothing else, read this one. Yes, I recognize that it’s mostly about Edmund and Peter but there is a good dollop of Lucy.  Susan is there, too, but she’s off talking with Aslan about how it totally is not her fault that Rabadash was an ass.  More to the point, it is about why and how the Narnia experience is relevant to the journeys the Friends of Narnia all undertake in Spare Oom.

Chapter 1 of Part 3 is really important to the direction of Lucy's story. Also, this chapter (Heart and Mind) tells you a lot about where Lucy is coming from, including that she was a Knight in Peter’s Order, she talks to dead people, she talks to Aslan, she was the Sword Master, and she’s got some issues with religious authority.  This chapter summarizes what Susan’s goals are for Part 3 (key word filing system).

Feeling the Friends

Which totally does not come out right at all.  In any event, due to the usual LJ friending and reccing thing, it turns out that a couple of new folks have come on board the TSG boat, including [livejournal.com profile] badgerbag  [livejournal.com profile] cobweb_diamond , [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty , new anonymous reader yasaman (thank you!!), and ShadowRess and eoen.

Ladies (I assume you are ladies), thank you so much.  I won't repeat what I've been blathering about too much.  Thank you.  I'm very grateful and deeply appreciative.

For those of you who are new, I've commented extensively on TSG part 2, TQSIT (follow the tag) here and if you are the sort of person who likes footnotes, this is where I documented it.

Meta, Hijacking, Give the Pevensies A Friend

Some rambling meta, over here rather than clogging up [livejournal.com profile] animus_wyrmis's LJ on Give the Pevensie A Friend.  Given the number of OCs who run around in my stories, the creating of friends (or even more of them) wasn't a problem.  It was shutting up about them.

Outed & Busted (redux) and cast of characters

So remember my whinging and complaining about being Outed and Busted (almost)?  Well, it turns that said suspicious friends have thought I was writing Twilight smut.  Which has led me to ask, and Hev over on NFFR to create, an awesome sig that states:  "It's better if they think you are writing Twilight smut, than know that you are writing in Narnia."  I am thrilled.  Hence the new icon above.  I'm not quite sure how they got there... well, actually I do know, but that was, errr, ahem, I long time ago.

In other news, the timeline went up, which even as I looked at it, I saw tweaks I wanted to make and have desisted from making them.  This is not a tax return or [insert complex document of choice].  I now add the Cast of Characters.

Spare Oom Timeline 1942

A Spare Oom Timeline for The Stone Gryphon Parts 1 and 2, through TQSiT, Chapter 17, because you asked

It might not be a 100% or add up completely, but this here's a timeline as best I can manage.  By the way, thanks so much.  The reviews have been astonishing and I'm truly grateful.

Aslan and the Divine

[livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith and her reflections on divinity in TSG

Aslan and the Divine
I really like that you refer to the Divine fluidly -- Him, Her, Aslan, God, Allah -- rather than trying to cram all of this strictly into the Christian theology alone.

Impressed that you keep the mystic/divine on a level that is subtle and understated enough to be wholly believable. Your characters may be hearing the Voice of God, but it is done so delicately that we as readers are not bashed over the head by Great Revelations. One could, if one chose (and were perhaps of a mindset like the Col's), read all of the Aslan-moments as the voices of the characters' subconscious minds rather that any manifestation of the Divine.

I also love L's -- 'casual' is the wrong word, but I lack the vocabulary for what I do mean -- relationship with Aslan, and the way E accepts this a matter of course although it seems he doesn't hear A so clearly nor does he really seem to expect to, ever. Of course, later in QSiT he does have a conversation with A, so perhaps I misread that; my impression in Pt1 was that he sensed A much the way P did in the garden with RR, rather than the solidity of L's conversations.

I can't help thinking that if P makes Asim's inner eye squint, L will probably blind him.

Re: RR and AP's discussion of suicide/euthanasia: this very short interaction has a ton to be unpacked in it, but I’ve tried about a dozen times to take a stab at explaining why I find it both irritating and very fitting and gotten nowhere.

Entry the One

I was up too late last night and now am up too early this morning after checking my office Blackberry (yes, you read that correctly) and seeing a delightful entry from [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith   She wrote that she had some thoughts on this Thing I am working on/have been working on, and would I be interested in starting a conversation?  So I naturally came downstairs, fired up the laptop and now say yes! yes! yes!

I am an egotistical sot, I suppose.    But I adore talking about stuff and my brain hurts in the best of possible ways after some NFFR conversations about Difficult Themes and then diving (again) into the work of [livejournal.com profile] bethemoon and [livejournal.com profile] bedlamsbard

So, [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith bring it on.

Update on Chapter 17 )

Err, yeah.  back to bed.

Really, almost to Chapter 14

Really, I'm done with Chapter 15 of TQSiT, and just trying to finish 14 and having a very difficult time of it in the general, I sux mode, why am I doing this again?

So, in the meantime, I give you a new book about the real Mary Anning
