This year, it took us about 5.5 days to get there. So, by all means, go back and fill in Post 1 and post new prompts here!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

"I'm sorry that I wasn't enough for you," Magdalena says, her tone strange, laced with a magic that he can already feel creeping into his heart.

"I'm sorry too," he says, and looks her in the eyes so she knows the truth while he is unspelled; then her magic seizes him, and it is too late to tell her anything more.

Any, any, bonsai

Higgin's sat at the table on the Garden Patio tending to half a dozen bonsai plants with Zeus and Apollo sleeping nearby.

He looked at them with a critical eye; trimming some leaves here and there, wiring branches up on one, down on another, deciding whether to repot the last one this month or could it wait until next. It was a peaceful time.

Suddenly a door slammed shut in the house, followed by a shout from Magnum; "HIGGINS?!" The peace was shattered.

When he brought her the tree, he thought it a pyrrhic, doomed gesture of goodwill: nothing blossoms in the underworld.

But she has tended to it, whether out of habit or out of some sort of trauma response or perhaps some instinct born deep in her heart; she has cared for like it was a child, watering it, talking to it, and even delicately pruning its branches, a strange form of discipline but one kinder than any he'd witnessed nor applied.

She glared at it triumphantly as he came into her room, and even as powerful as he was, for a moment he was awed by the sheer strength of will in his proposed bribe, and wondered if perhaps he had bit off more than he could chew.

The family have always been musical, and plants often grow better when sung to (Tarraplasian's Deaf Lilacs notwithstanding), so between heterodyning and the waters of the Dyne it's no surprise that the Castle hosts an indoor garden of thriving greenery (and purplery, and whitery, and quite a bit of gaudiery).

Brigantia, however, has heard that 'miniturisation' is The Hot New Thing, and while Heterodynes specialise in originality instead of following the herd they quite often do so by giving other people's ideas a uniquely Heterodyne twist.

For example, her self-pruning bonsai, which is all too happy to also prune the rest of the garden... and the gardeners.

Derek discards the used sandpaper and carefully afixes his final piece—the smallest grit—to his block. As he runs it over the wood, it becomes soft and perfect, ready for its first coat of paint.

“What are you doing?” Stiles has a hand at Derek’s lower back, fingers curling close. Derek didn’t even hear him come in, he was so intensely focused.

As Derek stretches, he realizes the natural light has dimmed and the overhead lights in the garage have taken over. He turns and pulls Stiles close, framing his face and kissing him gently. “You know how Jackson loves to sit in the sunroom of our house and comment on the variety of birds in our yard?”

“Mm.” Stiles doesn’t say much more for a moment, sinking closer to Derek, fingers gripping his shirt as he holds on and returns kiss for kiss. “You want to keep him around more,” he murmurs. “You’re going to lure him into spending more time here with a birdhouse.”

“Several,” Derek admits. “I didn’t think you’d mind.”

“I want to keep him, too,” Stiles admits. “This is a good start. We’ll make this home his as much as ours. He’ll figure it out eventually.”

"I am not!" Tugger snapped back distractedly, slinking just a little further along the narrow branch, stretching one paw down, claws extended, towards the birdhouse swaying gently in the breeze.

Sniffing, Misto resettled himself on a high branch of his own; he idly licked his foreleg, smoothing down his fur, and prepared to watch his mate crash messily to the earth - with or without the birdhouse in tow.

It was quieter without that brat A-Qing around, and with no more secrets to keep, Xue Yang could go about his work freely. He still went to the market, still stayed and ate at the coffin home, and lit a fire to keep cozy every night, telling Daozhang all those terrible stories he used to bite his tongue on. He didn't mind having to do it all by himself; Daozhang had always been terrible at telling stories anyway.

God,, I don't know if it's worse if he's lying to himself half on purpose or if he genuinely believes he doesn't mind... Thank you so much for the food

“You’ve heard, then,” he says, flatly, crossing his arms, “from who - Daphne or Eloise - oh, why do I even bother to ask, we both know which of them couldn’t keep her mouth closed if our very fortunes depended upon it.”

“Oh, I’d known for years, actually,” Francesca says, and delights in Colin’s shock for several delicious seconds before continuing, “You forget that your wife is not the only member of the family who prefers to be still and observe others, though as it goes so much against your natural inclination to make trouble, I can see why,” and if Colin is speechless for several moments after that, perhaps she savors that, too.

Of course it would be Fran!!! And yes Colin would be so annoyed that Fran is just not shocked.

Colin being annoyed is always hilarious. He's usually so easygoing, but when he gets irritated, he gets very irritated.

When he is young, Michel dreams of service and worth, of Sabria reclaimed--but years do their work in clearing his mind, of sobering his mind like a bucket of ice water after a night of carousing, so that he learns better.
He might bend his head, obey for the sake of peace, but memory will not let him: pride is nothing to what might have been.
He thinks of peeling off the husk of Phillipe's arrogance, and wonders if all that golden boyish potential might still rise beneath his hands.

OH MY. I love the way this complicates Michel, and how it certainly feels appropriate to Phillipe's...everything and the messiness of Sabria and everyone in Phillipe's inner circle. And the precision of the language and the pride. <3 And how in a way it feels like a much darker reflection of Dante and Anne, with the aristo and the commoner who work together, and the different kinds of arrogance.

Yes! The hints of Michel in the first book, the way we are convinced he would never turn traitor, and the fact that Phillipe was his kids' goodfather, suggesting a more intimate friendship...(also, I never thought of the Anne/Dante echo and I LOVE how much that complicates and darkens things even more!!) Thank you :)

"Have you considered," Dante says irritably, "that you might simply be wrong?"

She wants to snap a rejoinder that he might not be the well-spoken man of her acquaintance but certainly he is the most unfalteringly truthful, but she catches a glimpse of his face, reflected in spell-light--not beautiful or ill-formed but something all in between that is infinitely more dear.

AHHHH, I love this. And oh, yes, the first line is so Anne (poor Anne!), and I heard that middle line in Dante's voice, for sure. :D

The Reverend Daughter and the Necrolord Prime were having another of their silent "talks;" John occupied himself by stirring his tea, while Harrow stubbornly did not.

"Before the Resurrection, people sometimes tried predicting the future by examining the arrangement of tea leaves—I can't imagine it ever worked very well, but I suppose it could be considered a primitive and tangential attempt at spirit magic," John eventually mused.

Harrow scowled (more than usual) and added that factoid to her list of reasons for disliking tea—her own attempts at spirit magic were too often primitive or even tangential, after all.

Friends to Romance

“I take it you have an opinion.” Draco’s dry tone is a low drawl, as if speaking softly might avoid drawing attention to the fact that he sits with Lavender Brown in this highly decorated, flowery, lacy, tea shoppe that smells of roses.

Lavender idly stirs her own tea, then sets aside her spoon carefully on the lace-trimmed pale pink cloth napkin. “You always have an opinion, so why shouldn’t I?” Her smile is full of teeth in a way that Draco can’t decide if it’s terrifying or fascinating. “Drink up. I can’t read your leaves until you’re done.”

The strainer captured most of the leaves; there’s little danger of drinking them down or getting them caught between his teeth. But fine pieces slipped through and Draco sees them there as he slowly sips at his tea, watching Lavender savor hers along with a small, sweet muffin.

Someone stops while walking by their table and stares frankly. Draco purses his lips and refuses to give in to the instinct to glare at them until they run, crying. Lavender smiles around the rim of her cup, like she knows exactly what he’s thinking.

When he finishes, he swirls his cup gently three times, then puts it down to let the leaves settle at the bottom. Lavender sets her own cup aside, and leans up to peer into the cup.

“I suppose you see something dire.”

She laughs. “No. But I do see a wolf chasing a dragon’s tail. The dragon looks like it’s about to take flight, so I’d say you’re at that moment in life where you need to make a choice between two paths.”

Draco doesn’t see anything like that in the leaves. There’s a blob and another blob as far as he’s concerned. He watches her settle back in her chair, like she hasn’t offered him a significant decision. It was blunt, but also subtle, and as she lifts her cup back to her lips, she watches him from beneath lowered lashes.

“If I make a choice today, perhaps on our next visit you might see what happens next, after the wolf captures her dragon,” he says quietly. “She should take care not to get burnt.”

Lavender swirls her cup and sets it down, smiling as she looks at her own leaves. “Oh, I’m not worried. According to what I see, the wolf can take care of herself.”

this is a great snapshot of their friendship and the foundation for their future romance! adorable!

I like that Lavender's force of will comes out in this as an equal match to Draco's; it's kind of maligned in the books because she's too girly or something, but she has opinions and knows what she wants.

Also the image of draco sitting in the frilly tea room is funny 🌸🐺🍵🌸🍵🐲🌸

I have a great love of Lavender, and literally read through her appearances over and over to set her in my head at one point because she's so much stronger than she's given credit for. And HAHA yes, I loved the idea of Draco so not wanting to be there, but Lavender won that particular discussion over where to meet. :D Thanks!

Henri included them all in his sweeping, flat gaze. "A mess of globs and specks," he said, painfully dry, "this is not how I look at anything," he turned his teacup away again, shaking his head and rising from the table, "enjoy your parlour games if you wish; I have better things to do."

Henri, of course, is an actual seer. . . But he uses tarot cards or nothing but his own senses to foretell the future.

Oh, my, I don't know the canon, but I find the language lovely and the tea leaves analysis fascinating! And the juxtaposition at the end with death/success -- so interesting!

Oh my god. This one slipped right past my defenses and then got me with that last line, and I love it so much.

Hidan swirls his cup of tea before taking a last sip. “My mother used to read people's fortunes with tea leaves.”

At that Itachi perks up and looks into the bottom of his own cup. “Oh? Did she ever read yours?”

“Once. Then she said it was nonsense and how she only did it to get money to buy us food.”

Itachi hums thoughtfully at that. “My mother also used to read tea leaves but refused to read mine or my brothers. Perhaps our mothers saw something they didn’t want us to know.”

“Yeah, maybe.” With a shrug Hidan leans back against the bed, tea cup still in hand. “Or maybe my mom really was just full of shit and took advantage of people.” Something won't allow him to believe that though, and he wonders what the hell she saw at the bottom of his tea cup all those years ago.

I don't know the canon, and it feels like there are Layers I'm missing here, but I really like the open question at the end and Hidan's cynicism, and the way the tea frames a conversation about something else!

MCU, Katy Chen & Kate Bishop, bonding over names and archery

“I have a 7pm reservation for ‘Nate,’” the hostess said doubtfully.

“Oh no, it’s, uh, it’s ‘Kate,’” Kate said, leaning in and tapping the scribble on the hostess’s notepad with a calloused forefinger. “See, right here, that should be a ‘K.’ Kate. That’s uh, that’s me.” She nodded encouragingly.

The hostess looked unconvinced.

“You get that a lot?” Katy asked, propping an elbow on the podium and ignoring the hostess. Her nametag read “Seraphina,” what did she know. There’d never been three of those in the same class. “’Cause I get it all the time. Katie-with-an-i-e, Kat, Katherine. This one time Collette, like that’s even a real name.”

Kate looked up at her, distracted. “Isn’t Collette in Les Miserables?”

“That’s ‘Cosette,’” said the hostess with annoyance.

“So she wasn’t any fun, who cares,” Katy said, flapping a hand dismissively and nearly clipping the hostess in the nose. Frustrated theater kid, right. It was obvious once you knew to look.

Kate’s eyes got huge and she jerked forward, snatching Katy’s hand out of the air. “What did you do?” she gasped, turning Katy’s hand over and running her thumb over the rough spots on Katy’s fingertips.

“Huh?” Katy stared at her, half-blown bubble momentarily forgotten. “Nothing? That’s just my hand?”

“But your callous patterns are so—” Kate shifted her grip to Katy’s wrist and waved her own hand in her face. “How are you hooking? Where do you contact the string when you draw, above the knuckle joint?”

Katy propped her other fist on her hip and frowned, chomping her gum. “You know I don’t do Olympic style, right? I learned to shoot in an alternate dimension in Asia. It’s, like, totally different.”

“Of course, but—"

“Look, do you think Nate’s on his way or not?” interrupted the hostess. “Because I can’t seat you until your entire party’s present.”

Kate dropped her hand and motioned toward the door. “Look, the range doesn’t close until nine. Do you, uh, would you wanna—”

“Oh, totally,” Katy said, straightening and heading for the exit. She grabbed a handful of mints out of the bowl by the door and offered one to Kate. “Let’s get a burger on the way there, though, I’m starving.”

LBH doesn’t make lists, really, but he does daydream - he is assigned a lot of menial chores, and his bright mind needs things to catch on, like a grasshopper jumping from blades of grass to another, and the shiniest thing in his whole universe is the warmth his shizun provides - so when his minds wanders, it is no surprise that he sometimes, frequently, okay maybe everyday but really who hasn’t, draws up arguments about who would be the best life companion(s) for SQQ.

At first it starts like this:

- must support shizun in cultivation;
- must uphold shizun’s reputation;
- must come from an esteemed family;
- must be a beauty beyond measure;

but as the years go by, it starts changing and becomes more like this:

- must be a good cook;
- must be a worthy confident;
- must defend shizun against physical and spiritual threats;
- must not allow shizun to overwork himself;

then it becomes:
- must be strong;
- must be kind;
- must be worthy.

It takes a long time, but eventually, LBH realises he only ever wanted on item:

- it must be me.

YEP

Who else is going to take such good care of shizun?? Who else knows instinctively when his feet are cold or his pillows need fluffing

He remembered receiving word of Aegnor’s death, the Sharp-flame slain by the Sudden Flame, and of Andreth’s soon after, finally giving in to the grief she had carried ever since Aegnor had turned away from her at the Aeluin—and he had wondered at the strange twist of doom that his brother should perish first, when it had been Andreth’s mortality that had ever threatened to sunder the two.

Finrod fought, rending fur from flesh, and he saw Andreth’s eyes in Beren’s, fierce and resolute, determined to endure for Luthien, though he had been swept up into the movements of a doom beyond his power and knowledge, a mortal caught up in the wars of the Eldar and Sauron; and Finrod fought with all of the power that had been given to him, tearing limb from limb—he fought out of duty to his oath and love for the House of Bëor, and he fought for the love his brother and Andreth had had stolen from them, and the hope that Beren and Luthien would not suffer as they had.

He turned around, his heart beating fast; his brother was there, impossibly, his coat odd and ill-suiting and brown but never had he ever wanted to see him more, and no amount of enemies could stop him from throwing a hug around Loki, staining him with the blood of more than a few enemies.

"I told you we would meet again," he said, and Thor grinned, manic; there would be time to mourn and time to rejoice later, but for now, there was only battle, and they had always gotten along best in battle.

Jack fired every time someone poked their head just above the outer edge of the barricade. The smell of charred wood filled his nostrils, while the combined screams and shouts of warring factions filled his ears. His building had been breached an hour ago and now all that was left were pitched battles in the hallways.

"Come out, General. You will not be harmed." He had no idea which of the Lucien Alliance goons was acting as the mouthpiece but Jack really didn't give a shit. Every other time he faced these types of odds, he had a team at his back. Not today.

"Yeah, whatever, I've heard it before," he called back. He checked the clip in his sidearm and closed his eyes. The mountain was already gone, Washington was burning, hell, Daniel was who knows where; everything at the moment seemed fucked. He opened his eyes and checked his watch, his lips twisting into a tight, bright smile. "Listen, whoever you are, you might want to get a move on."

"And why is that?"

"Because you have about five seconds before the bomb in my office goes off and takes you with it."

That got their attention and a mad scramble commenced beyond the barricade. Jack rested his back against the door jam, his gun hanging limply from his fingers. His part of history was finished. Out there, somewhere, Teal'c, Sam, Vala, and Cam were on their way to Pegasus with everyone they could pull off the planet before the end.

"See you on the other side," he whispered as his world burst into heat and flame.

... Yowch!

The star demons are falling again, and this time it’s not something that can be solved by the death of a single man. She assumes Dad will be awful about it - no, that's not fair, he's never truly awful, just awkward, just unknowing, and sometimes her mother is a gaping wound she thinks will never close. So she researches, asks Dawn because Dawn knows everything (and laid it all out for her, pads and tampons and menstrual cups and Thinx, there are so many choices) and asks Kristy because Kristy would be jealous if she didn't (and Kristy shrugs and tosses her a tampon, which is absolutely no help).

The morning her period comes, Mary-Anne Spier walks into the bathroom to find a little basket of supplies - even ibuprofen and a heating pad - and a little note.

Feel better, sweetie. Love, Dad.

Awww this was so sweet on so many levels, especiall when Mary Anne asks both Dawn and Kristy for help.

This was probably calmer than what I imagined because she has Dawn and therefore Sharon's around as well XD In the series (and I think the books as well) Kristy was the last to get her period, and in the series Mary Anne gave Kristy a pad from her purse, so when Mary Anne got hers, Dawn and Sharon probably weren't around and Kristy would be clueless, but Richard probably pulled through nonetheless, just more awkwardly :D
