What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

Wei Wuxian swings himself the rest of the way in through the window and hauls a too-heavy chair up beside the desk; Jiang Cheng's handwriting hasn't changed so much over the years that he can't manage a decent imitation in a pinch, surely there's got to be something here requiring less-than-negative braincells to write.

Wen Qing survives, somehow, survives the flames, shattering every medical barrier she knows as she lives — although she is used to it, now, as Wei Wuxian's doctor and friend.

She travels light: she cannot go back to the Burial Mounds, but she cannot stay among the rivers and lakes of the cultivational sects, no, not if she wants to survive; Wen Qing moves east, and picks up a cultivator who tells her to call her Mianmian and together they pass through cities and scale mountains and trek through forests until finally, they look forward and find their breath stolen by the glittering expanse of the sea.

Here, in this fishing village by the sea, here Wen Qing can drown the flames of her surname in the depths of the ocean, and live.

As Amanda stepped over the threshold into the witch's house, she blinked her eyes at the lack of sudden dimness -- the tiny windows had their paisley curtains pulled aside and a fire crackled merrily in the hearth, but those didn't explain how a cramped wooden cottage could be nearly as bright as the noonday sun reflecting off the midwinter snow and ice.

After a moment she noticed a glass bottle wrapped in layers of multi-colored gauze and hung over a cluttered worktable in a net of cords, filled with a searing, shifting glow only slightly softened by the muffling fabric; "What on earth--?" she said, taking a step toward the table, uninjured hand lifted in wonder.

"Ah ah ah, don't touch!" the witch said as she tapped Amanda's legs with her walking stick, leaving a wet, muddy smudge; "That's bottled lightning, a little fallen spark I caught in the last storm and brought home to feed up until it's strong enough to leap home; but even a half-dead flicker of lightning is enough to sear your flesh from your bones, so best you keep back while I fix you up, sort you out, and send you back on your way."

When Paul is two years old, he throws a tantrum and nearly destroys several Atreides heirlooms. Jessica is tempted, briefly, to use the Voice to make him behave, but she knows enough not to go down that path; generations of Bene Gesserit before her have been able to properly guide their daughters, not reduce them to helpless beings unable to hold their own in a normal conversation.

She knows that soon she will need to begin molding him to develop his own powers, and that scares her almost as much as the prospect of controlling him, but not yet; for a year or two more she can pretend they are a normal family and the prospect of a toddler acting out is the worst she has to face.

I love the restraint you show in Jessica here, and her ability to anticipate the consequences of even her smallest parenting choices. And that tragic thought at the end </3

Narnia/Pirates of the Caribbean, Susan/Jack, lost in time and space

Susan never looked for him… but she did travel to the sort of places that he might be drawn to — not, you must understand, because she hoped to meet him there, but because she shared his love for liminal spaces, for seasprit on a darkly gleaming beach, for the dripping mouths of caves, for galaxies whirling in tide pools.

(For his part, Jack looked everywhere — once he thought he had seen her in the drinks cabinet, her eyes outshining her crown, but he’d be the first to admit thar could have been the rum’s influence — but he paid special attention to the shadows in doorways, the rocky outcroppings along unknown shores, and, on one memorable occasion, the reflections in the salt flats of Davy Jones’ locker.)

Once, they had met at sea, each adrift, each pulled into the other’s current until they formed a whirlpool of impossible dreams: someday, they would circumnavigate a round world… sail to the edge of a flat world… explore the vast expanse of stars… someday.

I admit, I laughed at Jack seeing her in the drinks cabinet. He would.

SAME. BUT it totally was the rum. Brilliant and funny and also completely characteristic of them both.

oh, this is gorgeous, and completely in character for each of them. i love the expanding possibilities in the last sentence, and i hope they get to meet again.

Sense8, the one cluster with super mundane talents

Riley and Nomi looked at one another then back at the be-speckled gentleman sitting at the desk in front of them. "Our friend, Mr. Hoyt said that you'd be able to help us sort out a lot of BPOs finances," Riley said tentatively. "They've said that things are slowly being teased apart and that we shouldn't worry."

Nomi broke in with, "But we do. We really, really do. And I freely admit that given our history with them that it might seem a little vindictive..."

She broke off when their host raised his hand. "Ladies, please. My associates and I are already in the process of rendering every bit of fat from the carcas of that organization." He steepled his fingers and smiled evilly as he got to his feet and walked over to a door. "If you would come with me please.

Riley and Nomi both got up and walked over just as he opened the door. What they saw was astonishing: mountains of Banker's Boxes along two walls while neat piles of paper lined a large conference table.

Seven heads looked up from their work and trained laser-sharp gazes on the three in the doorway.

"Everyone, I'd like you to meet Miss Nomi Marks and Miss Riley Blue," their host announced. "They have brought us a case that dovetails with our current work."

Slow, predatory grins appeared as one of the cluster inquired, "Slow burn or scorched earth?"

"Scorched to the bedrock, Mr. Leach."

The aforementioned Mr. Leach looked at his companions and declared, "We're gonna need food and coffee. I'll call in a to go order."

The trio backed away from the room which allowed their host to close the door. Nomi looked at Riley and said, "I did not have 'meeting a cluster made up of certified public accountants,' on my bingo card."

Edmund didn't particularly care for Captain Jack Sparrow's outrageous manners or overindulgence in strong drink, let alone his profession, but a quick glance up at the Splendor Hyaline's foredeck made it clear Susan had no such scruples, and there would be no separating the pair anytime soon, propriety and decorum be damned.

Well, she could do worse, he decided with a sigh. At least it wasn't Rabadash this time...

“He is more my type than yours,” Edmund drawled, trying to match her tone and trying very hard not to imagine what his sister might be doing with Sparrow, the shinies woven into his hair or the rum hidden in his hold.

No, Edmund had never had any difficulty understanding her attraction to the pirate; the difficulty would be in navigating the waters of a Narnian monarch consorting with a known criminal… or was he known, and had he committed any crimes in Narnian waters?

(Edmund decided to delegate the interrogation to Susan; it was only fair for her to shoulder some of the burden of her decision, he reasoned; besides, she’d enjoy it.)

Now I want to read THIS ship!! I'm sure Jack would be fascinated to find himself at the center of a love triangle like this one!

Wuthering Heights, original character, the third Catherine (daughter of Cathy Linton and Hareton Earnshaw) escapes the legacy of her ancestors and finds real happiness leaving the Heights/Grange and the past

First things first, she changes her name: Cathys and Catherines have only ever suffered in her family, because everyone expected them to be someone other than themselves, but Katie might do alright for herself.

Next, in broad daylight, she cleans house; pries up rusted nails and shards of glass and splinters of wood that would bite anyone who tried to open a window; throws out mildewed sermons and tired philosophies; and lets the whole place actually breathe air from this century for once.

Then Katie leaves it all behind – it’s better than she found it, which is more than anyone else has bothered to do, but she cannot be expected to give her whole future to her origins.

ooh this is good. i love that the first step is changing her name and shaking off the expectations that name carries, and the second is to leave the home better in some concrete way than she found it, but the point is still to leave. ‘mildewed sermons and tired philosophies’ is a particularly good turn of phrase.

thank you! and you're right, that's really the order it all needs to happen. hee, i'm glad you like that phrase, because there's a part in the book where the narrator finds a book full of sermons that's falling apart and has nightmares about hell afterwards, and that's stuck with me vividly even years after reading it.

In the years following his journey to the Underworld, when his shizun was no longer dead but not yet walking among the living, Mo Ran left everyone at Sisheng Peak behind to wander the Lower Cultivation World and help the common people. He wrapped himself in his loneliness and grief, donning white robes in the guise of the Beidu Immortal.

This wasn't the first time he'd had to live with Chu Wanning's death; he hoped at least that Mo-zongshi was handling the loss better than Taxian-Jun had.

I still don't know the canon, but I love this description of Mo Ran and his grief.

He wrapped himself in his loneliness and grief, donning white robes in the guise of the Beidu Immortal.

I love this line! And the image of him grieving by helping the common people.

Oh, wait, is this what 2ha is? I've seen the term around and heard of Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun, but never linked the two!

It didn't completely, but it did occur to me! But wandering the earth helping the common people and isolating yourself from the great sects also feels like such a reasonable angsty grieving wuxia + xianxia thing to do, though I admit I have no examples that come to mind.

And awwwwwww at the taking up his shizun's cause. ;_;

Lmao I said he would be fine eventually, I very specifically made sure not to say that he didn't die! :P I was being vague bc spoilers, but of course this fill threw that out the window...

And yes, Erha or 2ha is how we abbreviate Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun bc it's the first two characters of the Chinese title (二哈和他的白貓師尊)!

It was all so much easier when Laertes simply didn’t care about anybody including himself – sure, avoiding anything that might hurt when it was taken away turned his world so much smaller, and he wasn’t doing his liver any favors, but he knew where he stood when he was running.

Now he has to face his losses and his fears on a daily basis and he hates it, hates how eager the world is to chew up everything he cares about, but he has people at his sides that he can and will trust with anything at all, and it almost feels okay.

One day he looks at Osric across the coffee table which has somehow become theirs and surprises himself by saying, “I haven’t been in Ophelia’s room since the funeral, and I really don’t think I can handle the memories on my own; can you come with me?”

Awww. :D What a clear portrait of slowly getting over loss, against all apparent odds.

thank you! laertes is very dear to me and i want him to not only survive the play, but also survive the grief that comes from being a survivor, and i think he can, even if it gets very bleak first.

aah laertes! i love how the story starts with laertes feeling like he's lost something from no longer pushing people away, because things were simpler and easier and painful and terrible but at least he knew where he stood. and then it shows how much he's gained, because he has people to reach out to now, even when things are painful (too painful to stand alone) but more importantly, he's capable of reaching out.

aahhhhh, comments like this are why i'm so glad when you read my fics, they're so warm and specific!! and gosh, 'but more importantly, he's capable of reaching out' really sums up his journey in this fic and in the au as a whole, because for a long time laertes just couldn't reach out even when there were people ready to take his hand. and it's too painful to stand alone, but he doesn't have to be. i'm so proud of this boy, and thank you so much for your comment <3

He is a fool. No, worse than that. There aren’t words harsh enough, bitter enough, for the kind of man he is. What sort of man stands in front of his wife and his teacher and says such things to them? What sort of man strides onto the remnants of a fresh battlefield, with the people he loves still bleeding, and demands that they help him in his cause? Of course they turned him down. Of course they’re sure to hate him now. He’s treated them—gods, the look on Acatl’s face—he’s treated them worse than Tizoc.

Mihmatini had cried, when they’d been alone, and he’d had no right to console her. His sword had lay in the dust between them, and he’d entertained thoughts of driving it into his own heart. It’s still a little tempting.

At some point while he’s been feeling sorry for himself, an ahuitzotl has eeled its way into his tunnel and is now leaning against his side like a dog. He buries his face in its wet, spiky fur and takes a deep lake-scented breath. So he’s ruined everything between himself and the people he loves.

He’ll just have to make amends.

'If wishes were horses,' Lucy thinks to herself as she walks along the grey London street, one foot on the sidewalk and the other in the street, scuffing her shoes in a way that would have Susan in a tizzy and ignoring the whispers of passersby, 'I should have to find a rather large stable to keep them in.'

'If wishes were horses,' thinks a slightly older Lucy, toting a horrid pile of textbooks to her next class because apparently, her last year of school meant that she absolutely must take a completely ridiculous number of exams, 'then I would be able to escape this tiresome place on horseback and be as free as the wind.'

'If wishes were horses,' Lucy thinks as she lets herself be pulled into a wild romp with Animals of all sizes, to cries of further up and further in, 'then I think the world would look rather like it does right now.'

Also, I love very much their softer and more philosophical exchanges in The Soul Mirror, and I also love grumpy Dante with his tendency to grumble and generalize, and this is a delight in both those ways.

Just kiss already, you two!--UGH, this was very much my reaction to the beginning of Daemon Prism, where it's been YEARS, and they're still pining! (And yes, their softer exchanges are my favorite!)

Not just pining, but not talking in the aether any more! I felt SO cheated when I read that the first time!

I suppose all the horseback riding and reading sessions and living together made up for it, but UGH, the pining.

If Mipha had had any fears about Zelda developing feelings for Link, they disappeared the day the two princesses watched Link clamber up a slick ladder in the Zora palace over and over only to jump off a waterfall each time, and each and every time glance up before he jumped to make sure Mipha was watching.

"He doesn't have to impress anyone," Mipha protested. "He's proved his scales."

Zelda gave her a strange, fond smile. "Maybe he thinks you're worth the effort."

Mipha covered her face in her hands, but under the embarrassment she was pleased.
