Three Sentence Ficathon Part 2

THE 2021 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!

THIS IS THE NEW POST FOR PART 2 OF THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON -- ALL NEW PROMPTS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE
You may continue to fill prompts (but not leave new ones) at the original Post 1 here.

[personal profile] conuly 's unclaimed prompt list here

Thank you all for participating! We had a rush of prompts at the end so be sure to check it out and if you want someone to fill something in particular, and assuming they don't mind being contacted (I know I  don't!), be sure to let them know!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly does this just because she is an awesome person but should you want to write her fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Who Walks Among the Stars (original)

[personal profile] edenfalling 2021-02-28 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The stars are more of a sea than a river, and more of a marsh than either, but there are channels where light flows swift and deep in and among the darker, drier ground, and those are what travelers follow on the winding paths between the worlds -- unless, of course, they are lucky enough to win the favor of birds and fly swift and true where others walk.

Kemmess steps tentatively from one hillock of dark to the next, testing the depth of the starry stream with the green, sap-sticky length of a broken reed, still glowing faintly with watery light. She has traversed the earth, the moon, and the sun without finding the hidden keep where her beloved has either fled or been imprisoned -- each witness she meets tells a different tale -- but there are whispers of worlds more distant yet in the heavens, and she will walk a thousand years rather than turn back with questions yet unanswered.

Obsidian & Blood, Teomitl

[personal profile] notapaladin 2021-02-28 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Tomorrow, there will be war. He will march at the head of the Triple Alliance to claim new lands for the Empire, to crush foreign cities' temples under his sandaled feet, to put their warriors to the sword and offer their hearts to the Sun.

That's tomorrow. Tonight he prays, and it is not to the Southern Hummingbird for victory in battle or the Jade Skirt for her favors when they reach the rivers between them and their goals. No, tonight he sheds his blood for the favor of any god who will listen, and he thinks of Mihmatini and Acatl and all their nieces and nephews--all the people he'll be leaving behind.

Please, he prays. Keep them safe. Don't let Acatl overwork himself, don't let Mihmatini make any powerful enemies--please. I won't be able to protect them while I'm gone, so please keep them safe for me.

For some reason, Kyoko refuses to spend time at Madoka's home. She only ever came over the once, and as far as Madoka was aware Kyoko had been having a great time, watching the oversized tv and eating all of her father's offered snacks. The only time her crooked smile faltered was when Madoka had to comfort Tatsuya after he woke up grumpy from a nap, but Tatsuya, ever the cheerful toddler, was smiling again in just a moment and Kyoko was already back to smirking by the time Madoka had turned around.

Her only clue is this--when she said goodbye to Kyoko, shoving a bag of sweets Tomohisa had made for her into her arms, Kyoko had gently rapped her knuckles against Madoka's forehead and said "Hey. Keep taking care of them. It's our jobs, right?"

Take care of who? Jobs--as magical girls? When Madoka asked, Kyoko only walked away, leaving Madoka frowning thoughtfully after her.

The Incubators found early on about adolescent girls and their outrageous output of energy when they'd been examining the Earth, but that didn't mean they stopped trying other sources of energy. Men and boys were filled with tremendous energy, but the results from them were too unpredictable, their emotions too volatile to be reliable--animals, on the other hand, had consist stats but too little energy to make them viable.

The tests on adult women were... inconclusive.

Although, to be fair, perhaps picking a scientist wasn't the best idea.

"If I got this right, then if I only clean my soul gem to seventy five percent, I can stretch a grief seed to three uses--which means, I'll have until Monday to need to start another witch hunt. And you know what that means!" She didn't wait for him to even ask. "Drinks with the girls! Kyuubey, honey, I know you can't drink, but man, you have no idea how much stress a good beer can take off you. I feel like a new woman by Monday."

Kyuubey would have grimaced if he could--if he had emotions or facial expressions. "Are you sure it's such a good idea to go drinking when there's witches probably luring their victims into their labyrinths at this very moment? Don't you think-?"

She flicks him in the forehead. "Do I look eager to work myself into an early grave? Burning my candle at both ends isn't going to keep me alive in the long run and it certainly won't save even more people if I leave the city completely unprotected."

No, this Kyuubey decides, teenage girls are far more reliable in the long run--and easier to control too.

Spring blooms into summer and summer fades to autumn, and still Susan waits for Jon Snow to return to Narnia — he promised he would, after his war was won, and she does not doubt his word, so she sits on her balcony overlooking the harbor at Cair Paravel, and she watches the horizon, waiting for the ship to appear.

Her siblings and advisors and friends are all worried about her — she rarely leaves her rooms, and she does not speak of of him to any of them; there's no way to explain that her heart and soul are thousands of miles over the sea, trapped in a battle and nearly frozen with despair, but she keeps herself warm by thinking of Jon, by saying his name aloud, by telling herself stories of their time together and what their future will be like, when he is finally by her side.

When Edmund appears at her door, she fears the worst — not that Jon has died, no, she'd know that already as they're connected in ways she had never imagined before meeting him — that he is here to tell her that the autumn winds have given way to winter storms, that no ships will sail to Cair Paravel again until the spring, and that her wait will stretch out across a desolate winter, but Edmund just smiles at her as he gestures to the balcony, saying, "Go look, Su — there's a ship coming and it's the one you've been waiting for."

Were it any other year, Katniss might have stood a chance, but the slippery track in the woods and the subsequent broken leg changed all that; Prim may only be twelve, but at least she can still run.

Terrified but kind, Peeta promises to protect her; disheartened, Haymitch still puts his everything into making her the Capitol's sweetheart; with his artistic genius, Cinna makes them shine - but it's only when Prim talks to Rue, when Rue brings Thresh to their table, that their luck starts turning.

"They make a powerful image," says Plutchard on a secret frequency - and unbeknownst to the new alliance, the Rebellion begins to plot.

The Wind Master’s fan had been returned under emergency circumstances; it wasn’t a gift, and He Xuan wasn’t disappointed to see it break again after a single use.

He made sure the Water Master’s fan was better reinforced after that, but he wouldn’t return it; after seeing the face Shi Qingxuan made when remembering him, He Xuan didn’t want to know the face he’d make when reunited with something of his brother’s.

[personal profile] vialethe 2021-03-01 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It’s the letters that give her away - not that he’ll admit to snooping, but it’s unlike Susan to leave such a mass of correspondence out (Ed knowing well from experience her notes tend to be brief, concise to a fault, so much does she dislike writing), and the boldness of her hand, so characteristic, firm black strokes filling up the whole page no matter how little she says, is absent, the words tumbling hesitant across the sheets.

He’s not certain whether it’s the heat of Tashbaan or the flare of his rage that makes his face burn as he finds the notes that caused her distress, page after page of vile suggestions from Rabadash, demands for and descriptions of acts his mind refuses to imagine his sister engaged in, until he understands well the spots and blotches on Susan’s aborted attempts at replies, understands that even her legendary courtesy cannot extend far enough to cover these insults.

He stops reading long before he runs out of pages, sickened by seeing her wrung out so in filthy prose; he’s sitting there still, the prince’s vulgar threats crumpled in his fist, when she returns, when she takes in the situation at a tired glance and crumples; when he holds her to him with one arm, listening to her whisper in misery, “Oh Ed, what am I to do?” while his other hand holds the sheets to the flame of the lamp, burning them down to ash, one by one.

Narnia, any, I will give my love an apple

The last apple of autumn

[personal profile] francienyc 2021-02-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucy drew her wrap around her and squinted up at the trees. 'Not a single apple left now,' she observed.

'There is,' Corin replied. 'Look--all the way up there.'

Lucy laughed. 'Well that's so high up it hardly counts. No one could reach that.'

'Oh no?' Corin asked, setting his fists on his hips and puffing out his chest.

Susan might have pleaded with him not to. Edmund would have said he was acting ridiculous. But Lucy lifted her chin and folded her arms even as she smiled. 'No one.'

Corin hied up the tree quick as lightning. When he could climb no higher he shook the branches and caught the apple neatly as it fell. Then he hung out of the tree and presented the fruit to Lucy. He watched as her face lit up with merriment. She took the apple and bit into it, then wiped the juice from her chin with the back of her hand.

Corin dropped down from the tree. Lucy raise her eyes to his slowly as she took another bite of the apple. He watched her mouth, her pink tongue and white teeth and red lips curling round the flesh, and for half a moment a wild hope started to flutter in his chest. But then she pressed the apple to his chest and ran off, her wrap streaming behind her like a banner. This was just enough to feed him, and just enough to keep him hungry.
