Three Sentence Ficathon Part 2

THE 2021 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!

THIS IS THE NEW POST FOR PART 2 OF THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON -- ALL NEW PROMPTS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE
You may continue to fill prompts (but not leave new ones) at the original Post 1 here.

[personal profile] conuly 's unclaimed prompt list here

Thank you all for participating! We had a rush of prompts at the end so be sure to check it out and if you want someone to fill something in particular, and assuming they don't mind being contacted (I know I  don't!), be sure to let them know!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly does this just because she is an awesome person but should you want to write her fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Even at its birth Narnia had been hurled towards this point. In the beginning it was perhaps not so obvious, the ‘kings and queens’ of Narnia left the natives well enough alone, only built one permanent structure – one that Narnia did not mind bearing. Then more people came – the Calormen destroyed Narnia’s south and she became evermore protective of her North. But time marches on – sometimes it gets worse before it gets better as with the freezing & enslavement of the last bit of free Narnia before the reign of children more Narnian than human. Other times it gets better only to get worse later, with the end of the Pevensie’s reign and the invasion of the Telmarines. It got better – once the Temarines were convinced not to kill the native Narnians on sight, but Narnia continued her trajectory regardless. When the Calormen cross the last line it is the end of Narnia for many. But Narnia herself (for the world is living too) is left to rot underneath the boot of humans who do not care for it, who do not acknowledge it.

The land is abandoned to its own devices, trying desperately to keep the last things it has safe. A modern Narnia looks much like our world does albeit with Calormen and Telmar culture. What native Narnians were left behind disguise themselves as Dumb Beasts, surviving under the assumption that Talking Beasts are myths. The mermaids hide deep in the depths of the Eastern Sea which Narnia has turned into a graveyard for all ships that dared to get too far from the Lone Islands. Some fauns have survived by walking among humans as one of them and Narnia protects all of them. She leads them to each other, tells them if others can be trusted and in return they help each other.

They are the myths in their native world, outsiders in their home. Narnia and her people had been left behind so they make do with what they have. Narnia protects her people even as the humans, without physical Narnians to hunt turn to the systematic destruction of the land, the body that makes up Narnia.

Obsidian & Blood, Acatl

[personal profile] notapaladin 2021-02-28 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
The Fifth World ends in screams and the shaking of the earth under their feet as Tezcatlipoca--Tepeyollotl, the Mountain Heart, the great jaguar--strides the land and roars his triumph from the top of the Great Temple. The Fifth Sun is falling. He will be the sixth. He will be the sixth, and Acatl has failed to stop it.

"You haven't," Teomitl says. His face is streaked with ash and blood and one arm is heavily bandaged, but he's alive. They're all alive, him and his family, and they're huddled in the ruins of the Duality House as they try to figure out what to do. "We can try again."

"Try what? To stop him?" Acatl shakes his head, feeling the words as bitter bile on his tongue. "How do you stop a god in the flesh?"

"We've done it before," Teomitl says, and smiles as though that will make everything better.

For once in Acatl's life, it doesn't help.

Obsidian & Blood, Acatl, Teomitl & Mihmatini

[personal profile] notapaladin 2021-02-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"I changed my mind," Mihmatini announced. "Teomitl, you should have killed your brother when you had the chance. At this point, I'd hand you the knife."

Teomitl sighted down the shaft of his arrow and loosed, piercing another shambling horror through the skull. "It's not too late, you know."

Acatl gritted his teeth and tuned them both out. Yes, bringing Tizoc back to life had left a hole between their world and Mictlan. Yes, killing him might close it. But that was something they could worry about when the immediate threat of hordes of the risen dead weren't throwing themselves against every ward the Temple of Mictlantecuhtli could muster.

He lifted one bloodstained hand and traced a complicated series of glyphs in the air. There. That should hold them. For a little while, at any rate.

The North cares for its newfound freedom carefully, remembering the past but looking ahead to the future. While Kings and Families rise and fall in the South, the Starks stay the North’s strong protectors. The common people of the South remove their kings to be replaced by democratically elected leaders and the North watches, doing nothing as those elected leaders turn as corrupt as the kings they were to replace.

The Narnia they entered was all ice and snow, but now they feel the world awaken with each unfurling leaf and each flower exploding into bloom, the trees so thick in places they have to climb up into the massive, entangled boughs like bridges.

The camp is up here, in the boughs--high up, the squirrel husband and wife tell them, because The Hunter does not need the steady earth to wage his war.

"Who is he?" they ask, but the squirrels only call him "The Hunter, The Horned One, The Green Man, but you Sons and Daughters may call him Cernunnos" and when they ask "is he good?" they are quiet a long time before saying "He is Everything--he is beyond such things."

And the Pevensies know now what they meant when they see him at last--they see nothing at first, but then a face emerges from the leaves, made of them until his face is brown as tree bark, and he steps out as tall as a giant. He walks out looking like a man, but they will later see him with the hind end of a centaur or sometimes a satyr. He is crowned with antlers as numerous as branches and in the shadowy depths of his sockets stars twinkle out while he wears this man face, but later he will have the head of a bull, a stag, even sometimes a ram.

"The Witch seeks to drown my land in a blanket of snow," he tells them, placing one hand against a dead tree. Beneath his palm, the tree cracks and splits and a new tree shot up from the rich corpse, rising up and spreading into a sky. A moment later, The Green Man reaches into the cracks of the tree and pulls out a dryad who falls to her knees and swears fealty. "She thinks that she can choke my land like a farmer throttles a chicken. But she will learn; she will learn that to plunder and encroach on my lands has consequences and I will not suffer a poacher in my woods. And you shall help me in this--yes, even your brother. You, Susan, let me see your stance with your bow. Yes, good--you two, bring your sword and dagger. Tonight, we hunt the Witch. Tonight we rescue your brother."

Santa would argue that they're VERY useful tools

[personal profile] last_haven 2021-05-18 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter is the first to discover the unique abilities of their presents from Father Christmas when he plunges his sword into the wolf only for the body to burst into a ball of flames and then ash. When Susan draws her bowstring back, the wind swirls and builds, and when she releases a gale follows the arrow's path. Lucy's dagger is perhaps the strangest--it never cuts flesh, but when she drags the tip along a wound, the gash will stitch shut without scar or seam.

Edmund was pretty thoroughly disappointed by missing his chance to meet Saint Nicholas until Lucy presented him with the javelin Santa had sent to him; he wasn't quite sure what it did until he tossed it and lightning struck the target he speared with it.

"Hmm," Alsan muttered to himself, "this wasn't quite what I had in mind when I said they shall need useful tools, Nick, but I guess they'll work."

The Wens were phoenixes. Just as the Lans are baihu, the Nie taotie (well, mostly taotie; nobody is sure what Nie-zhongzhu is but the tales of his mother having been a huli jing can't be true), the Jin pixiu, and the Jiang river dragons. In this universe, there's really no hiding what Lan Yuan is, not after the first time he has a childish tantrum and bursts into flames. But still--there's open secrets, the sort everyone knows and no one acknowledges, and then there's...well, telling people.

It comes out on a night hunt, one where they've just been ambushed by entirely too many fierce corpses and only his flames managed to save them all. "This one," he says, "was once surnamed Wen," and he sees his friends' faces (they can't be his friends anymore, not after this)--

And Ouyang Zizhen shrugs, and says, "You're lucky. I mean--not about that! But my family is all raccoon dogs."

Jin Ling grumbles and says, "Mother passed down her scales and horns, so all my cousins say I look like a qilin."

Lan Jingyi grins and claps Lan Yuan's shoulder, and says, "You don't even need a sword to fly!"

He has the best friends ever.

The beavers speak thinks Susan, surprised, then, the beavers speak English she thinks, even more surprised. She may only be twelve but she knows that France speaks French and Germany speaks German, it would stand to reason that Beavers spoke… Beaverian or something equally as ridiculous, or Narnian for Narnia – wasn’t that what the letter called this land? It was so ridiculous that Susan easily dismissed the whole thing as a quite vivid play adventure she was only participating in to humor Peter and Lucy. It helped that Edmund looked just as down about it as her – maybe a bit more but that was probably because they were forcing him to play along. And then that night, before or maybe slightly after Edmund snuck out, she heard the beavers speaking words she found herself unable to understand. They didn’t think she could hear them; of that she was confident for they spoke in hushed tones and over in the corner. But they were speaking a language foreign to Susan’s ears – they were speaking Narnian. When Mrs. Beaver notices that Susan is not sleeping, and is watching their conversation with curious eyes – eyes that no longer believed her brain was lying to her she bustles over to pat her on the arm and speak in English again to her. "It’s beautiful." she blurts, heedless of the stirring of her siblings. "Please, will you teach me?" the surprise on Mr. and Mrs. Beaver’s faces is as confusing as the contents of their hushed conversation had been but a moment later their eyes light up in a joy Susan doubts she has ever seen before.

Dance lessons

[personal profile] francienyc 2021-02-27 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Edmund was glad to find his siblings and Peridan after a night circulating amongst the nobility of the Lone Islands. Their overly formal manners reminded him a little too much of the Calormene Tarkaans. But even his siblings didn't provide much of a respite. Peter soon turned to him and said, ‘What’s all this I hear about you being in the warrior’s dance, Ed?’

‘Yes, it seems everyone is talking about it,’ Lucy observed.

‘Oh. That must have been what I agreed to. I wasn’t really listening to the governor properly,’ Edmund said, taking a swig of wine as if this were no matter.

Peridan choked on a laugh and pressed a fist to his mouth to hold it back.

Edmund wheeled on him. ‘What’s so funny?’

Peridan shook his head, unable to speak for fear of laughing. Finally he composed himself enough to say, ‘The dance opens every tournament. It is a long standing tradition in the Islands, going back to before the Time of Exile. You honour the people by performing it.’

‘Then why,’ Edmund said, stepping closer to search his face, ‘Do you look so merry about it?’

The next day Edmund stood in the middle of the tiltyard, waiting awkwardly by himself while Peter, Susan, and Lucy looked on. ‘Oi, Peridan!’ He called into the weapons shed. ‘How long is this going to take?’

‘A mere moment, Sire!’ he called back.

Edmund blew air out of his cheeks and started to pace in circles, putting one foot in front of the other.

‘I thought I should give you the full effect,’ Peridan announced as he emerged, spreading his arms. As he reached them he struck a pose, his hands on his hips. Peter, Susan, and Lucy fell to laughing.

‘What on earth are you wearing?’ Edmund frowned.

‘The traditional costume!’ he said. ‘Look. Here is the embroidered waistcoat—usually done by the lady of the house—and the starched cotton for the skirt, and the sandals which lace up the calf, and the hat.’

Edmund knocked Peridan's cap askew as he pulled a face. ‘Do you know what you look like?’

‘You, when you take to the dance floor a few nights hence,’ Peridan replied with a grin. ‘Now come—you’ll need to perfect your backflip before then.’

More laughing from Lucy, Peter, and Susan. Edmund frowned at them.

‘You’re enjoying this, aren’t you,’ Edmund said to Peridan.

‘Well,’ he said, ‘I admit you’ll look very fetching in this yourself.’

A/N: Ok, so admittedly this is the second fill where I've used part of the story I'm currently posting, but it just fit the prompt so well.

Lucy was given the Eastern Sea, she was given the east, the water. She was given the name Valiant and earns the title Dame before long. She travels the sea, both on a ship and swimming happily with the mermaids. She leaves the sea and it does not cling to her, confident that she will, inevitably return to it. In the middle of any rainstorm, Lucy can look to the stars and find them peeking out from behind the clouds as they clear for her sight.

Peter was given the Northern Sky, he was given the north, the air. He was given the name Majestic and lives up to the name every day of his life. He travels the mountains, both on foot or gliding on his own and riding on the backs of griffons or the shoulders of giants. He travels to the highest altitudes and is never at a loss for breath, he could visit the stars in their homes and breathe just as easily as always. Peter climbs the steepest cliffs and never loses his footing, unstable rocks holding in place to fall only after he has moved on.

Edmund was given the Western Wood, he was given the west, the earth. He was given the name Just and mediates disputes with fairness. He travels the woods, both blinking from tree to tree and dancing freely with the dryads and satyrs. He lets the land move around him, never lost though nothing on the land ever remains the same for long. Edmund ventures into the deepest darkest mines, and they let him out anywhere in Narnia that he wishes.

Susan was given the Southern Sun, she was given the south, the fire. She was given the name Gentle and treats everyone who comes to her of any injury and sickness. She travels the grasslands, running both with the wolves and the horses. She runs as fast as the wind, across the hills and dips that make up her domain. Even in the coldest places Susan excludes heat, never cold, always warm.

Tumnus barely remembers summer before Winter came--his parents had brought him along to only two of the great summer dances before the White Witch came, but sometimes if he strains can remember juicy grapes and the laughter half drowned out by the sound of pipes. Then came Winter and the Witch, and those memories seem almost as impossible as the Prophecy foretelling the Four Human Children coming to save them all.

And yet, he can't help his eyes widening when Lucy touches his sad little pot of wilting petunias and the wan leaves brighten, the stem stretching upward, and buds grow and blossom in only a moment. He looks at her, the words "we shall have spring again" echoing in his ears.

Lucy, for her part, looks at the plant and then her fingers before murmuring "I... don't believe I was able to do that before coming here."

There has always been an itch under Leia's skin, but duty drowned it, obscured it, quieted it as she grew (as a child, her father had told her she had to restrain the itch, to bury it deep and deep). Even as a prisoner, she'd restrained herself, remained dormant and allowed the questioning, the torture, the pain (even as that fed the itch beneath her skin). Then they ordered the destruction of her world, and there were deaths screaming in their billions where only she could hear; Leia opened her eyes and skin, released the itch to do as it would.

Ravenclaw thinks that the youngsters should have the opportunity to learn more, to be safe, and Gryffindor hears 'protected' and hasn't that man always wanted to be the hero? So Hufflepuff joins because neither of those two think of the boring practicalities, and children shouldn't have to be impressive to have a place in this new school.

Slytherin knows that he is only here to appease the families who lean to the Darker Arts, give Gryffindor a chance to 'save' them - but it gives him opportunity to seek another Parseltongue, to search for a worthy heir to his legacy... and opportunity to arrange the destruction of all the others', if he ever has reason to open his Chamber of Secrets.
