3 Sentence Ficathon Part 2!!!

THREE SENTENCE FICATHON IS NOW CLOSED.  REALLY.  REALLY AND TRULY OVER.  RIGHT NOW.  UNTIL NEXT YEAR.  REALLY.  GO FORTH AND WRITE MORE FIC WITHOUT LIMITING IT TO 3 (OK SOMETIMES MORE) SENTENCES!  FREE THE PLOT BUNNIES!  WRITE EPIC SUSAN/MAGLOR!  EXPRESS YOUR RICHARD III FEELS IN HAIKU!  REMEMBER IT'S ALWAYS BETTER WITH DRAGONS!  OR BACCHUS!  TELL US ABOUT CASSANDRA AND PENELOPE, CLEOPATRA AND CLYTEMNESTRA!  IN FIC!

I'm not going to close the post to comments because already filled-prompts deserve love and attention.  If someone wanders in and fills a prompt or offers a new one, that's cool and I'm not going to go all stompy boots.  This has been awesome and my thanks to all of you for a great exchange.  I'll certainly host this again next year!

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

Wow.  Well, the votes are in and after almost 5,000 prompts, fills and comments, I decided to start a new post that will carry us through the conclusion of the 3 Sentence Ficathon which will conclude on April 7, 2013.

We have lots and lots of unfilled prompts still.  So, if you posted or saw a prompt you really would love to see filled, please post again here in the new thread and hopefully someone will give you an awesome fill!   Please continue to commented upon filled prompts and thank authors, but all new prompts and fills should come  here.

My thanks to everyone for the incredible participation.  Interest has flagged the last couple of days and I'm not sure if it's just that 4900 comments and 49 pages is just too daunting or if everyone has run out of ideas.  With a new thread, maybe this will make it easier for people to navigate it again, or maybe everyone is off on Spring Break!

To recap:

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This all started with the lovely CaramelSilver (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!).  This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

And thanks to Metonomia for the spiffy icon!

How long can it go?
The 2013 3 Sentence Ficathon will close on Sunday, April 7, 2013.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?

Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

[personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

He has been known by many names over the volcano years, the flood years. Aspects of him have been El, YHWH, Zeus, and he has floated in the waters of himself, lowed in the pastures of himself, judged himself and found himself innumerable and all-truthful. These Romans no longer know which parts of the divine they want, nor how they want each part to act, but Mithra is mutable, and knows how to give way gracefully, like the sun from morning to noon to night.

The new lords of Prydain think of Queen Eilonwy exactly as she once used to think of her bauble: a symbol of a royal heritage, an excellent way to start a conversation about golden beauty if you couldn't think of anything else, but, ultimately, rather useless. At night, she fumes, "It's like asking for beeswax and getting honey instead!";her husband, still looking rather overwhelmed from the sums necessary to determine the state of the treasury, only nods in reply.

It's not until Taran goes south to supervise the final stages of rebuilding of Mona, leaving Eilonwy in charge, and a ragged troop of bandits attacks that she is able to show them what's she's truly made of; then, rather enjoying the looks on their faces as she lowers her sword, Eilonwy says, very sweetly, "Please don't worry, my lords; your lives are safe in my hands."

Operation Chastise

"Bombs away!" cried Gibson as George sent Wallis' bouncing bomb spinning down towards the darkly shining water with a single flick of his curved talons.

Gibson peered down past the Lancaster's olive-green shoulder to follow the bomb as it fell, and in the erratic light of the flashes of anti-aviator fire that lit up George's cloud-pale belly as if it was already Christmas morning, he saw the bomb bounce once, bounce twice and sink without a trace before it even reached the dam.

"Dammit!" Gibson swore briskly through his teeth and called to George for more height, feeling the massive wings beat slowly below him as they curved away to make room for Hopgood and his dragon to take their own run.

AN: No disrespect is meant to any veterans of World War Two by this story.

Operation Chastise was the 'Dambusters' attack on the Mohne and Eder dams in 1943 led by 24 year old Guy Gibson. Gibson made the first run in the Lancaster bomber 'G for George' and Hopgood made the second run in 'M for Mother'

My grandfather fought in WW2 and one of my earliest memories is pulling one of his books about the Dambuster raids down from the shelf to read. So this got a little bit personal. Thanks for the wonderful prompt. :D
communi_kate: (Default)

[personal profile] communi_kate 2013-03-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked it:D.
The prompt really inspired me.
AN: Hopgood was the pilot of the second Lancaster to dive upon the dam-'M-Mother'. Their plane was hit and crashed as they dived upon the dam but the crew bailed out.
When I wrote the fic I thought that he survived, but after doing some more reading after discovering a typo in my original source it seems that only two members of the crew lived to tell the tale and they weren't Hopgood. A good symbol though. It could be anyone. I didn't realise until I wrote this that they were all so bloody young.

I suspect we'll see more playing with the WW2 tropes once all those involved are dead. There was a recent SF/F/steampunk novel which name I can't remember, that got panned for being disrespectful towards those who died and the author responding that she thought the war was fun when questioned. I'm a Brit, and WW2 directly influenced the lives of all four of my grandparents and their families: where they lived, who they married, what their jobs were, and that's not even the combat itself. I remember them talking when I was a kid about what happened, and they were lucky compared with many people.
The monument in Hyde Park and its wording is taken from the real-life Animals At War memorial plaque.

Competency

Spoilers for 'Cetaganda'.

"You are," the ghem-lady gasped as she arched back across the cushions, panting and spent, "...more than competent, Lord Vorpatril."

Ivan gritted his teeth and cursed Lord Yenaro and his own un-co-operative anatomy to the stars before he turned to her companion.

"On Barrayar there are four stages of competency, my lady," he purred, "let me show you them."

'I know precisely what is meant by commissariat.'

"The trouble with you, Private ibn La'Ahad," said Captain Malik al-Sayf of the Army of Assassins' Intelligence and Logistical Corps. "is that you never know the best time not to fight."

"At least I can fight," Altaïr protested, his words loud in the sudden, icy silence of the commissariat.

"We need people who can stop fighting when they're told," Malik snapped, "just as much as we need people who can start."

"I'm the best Assassin!" protested Federico as he raced across the rooftops of Firenze, heading for the statue they had designated as the finish line.

"You're wrong," panted Ezio as he took a short-cut across a perilously balanced arrangement of cranes and hanging platforms, "I'm the best Assassin!"

"You're both wrong," Claudia said she as appeared from behind the statue and leaned nonchalantly on its shoulder. "I'm the best Assassin of them all."

She asks the priest: what is real? and he hands her a wooden crucifix and says - sacrifice, passion, original sin washed away by divine and human blood - and she grips the tiny cross so hard it splinters into her palm, but what she feels is stone.

She asks the nurse: what is real? and she says - the train's brake failed, it went around the corner much too fast and flew off the rails, and they all died on impact, probably without pain - and she identifies bodies and arranges funerals, but she dreams she is always running, further up and further in, but she is never fast enough.

She asks the trees: what is real? and they say - shhhhhhhh, we are being played upon by the wind, we are drinking sunshine, shhhhhhhh, you are alone and uprooted, shhhhhhh - and she walks away and asks no more.

Hold My Life

[personal profile] snacky 2013-03-26 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
After Narnia (for that is how Susan divided her life - in Narnia, and after Narnia, and before Narnia was just a hazy memory, of a different life entirely) - Susan decided to live in England the best way she knew how.

She threw herself into life in England, living it to the fullest, with friends and parties and work and fun and frivolity - at least what fun and frivolity was to be had in post-war London - and she knew the others didn't understand, thought her foolish and shallow, and fallen away from Narnia.

What they didn't understand, though, was that she was taking what she had learned in Narnia, all the ways she had lived as the Gentle Queen, and living that life in this world - one of the duties she had learned in Narnia was that a Queen brought joy and beauty to her people, to all those around her, and she took this duty seriously in this world as well.

"So...Lizzie, William is leaving for San Francisco tomorrow and you didn't even send me the footage to edit, but took precious time away from him to edit it yourself?" Charlotte asked when they met up for brunch at one of their favourite cafes, just after episode 99 went online.

This wasn't the first time in their lives that Lizzie wished Charlotte wasn't so good at hinting at things that Lizzie definitely didn't want to talk about; she tried not to blush, half-wishing that this was a video where she could push Charlotte out of frame; she was thankful that at least William out answering a very important phone call so it was only the two of them at the table.

"Then again, it might be for the best," Charlotte continued dryly, "whatever happened in the jump cut might have traumatised me for life."

"We're not really having dinner with Catherine, right?" was the question that Lizzie asked five times during their relatively short car ride to the restaurant, and William refused to answer with anything other than a slight smile; she always thought it was so easy to guess what he was thinking, but now that look could mean just anything.

When they did get to the restaurant, she couldn't help but duck her head a little and sneak a look around the room, her ears straining to hear the familiar whimpers that belonged to Annie-kins; holding her hand, William smirked - the table they arrived at was set for two.

Lizzie knew she had been had then, and wanted to huff, to shove him, to stomp her foot, but she couldn't do any of those things, because they were in one of the nicest restaurants in town and she was in a dress and heels and it would just be rude, so she only glared at him as he smiled smugly at her from across the table, promising herself that she'd make him pay later.

this prompt is fantastic and this doesn't do it justice, but--.

Lily's not entirely sure why the Head Girl has to be the one to personally guard one of the paired mirrors that Dumbledore wants to study over Easter holidays, but Professor Flitwick asked and he's such a darling that she can't possibly refuse him, any more than she can help ignoring his warning and peeking at what this fabled mirror has to show once she's alone.

She sees: an underfed little boy in pajamas, with James's face and her eyes, standing all alone, face pressed to the glass--staring back at her as though at a stranger.

With a shudder, she covers it again.

Lizzie stretches for the off switch on the camera, then twists back toward him, a playful smile forming as she secures her arm around his neck and meets his gaze. "Are you going to carry me off into the sunset?"

She is teasing him, surely. Her tone was laced with amusement and laughter still dances in her eyes, but the way she clings to him, and the unsteady rhythm of her heartbeat that he can sense from their proximity, makes him reconsider.

"My dearest Lizzie," he murmurs, resting his forehead against hers, "I will carry you wherever you wish to go."

When Ezio, the little Prima Donna, had severely twisted his ankle and then broke his toe by falling into the orchestra pit while showing off for Leo, the company’s set designer, at practice just a week before opening, Shawn thought they were screwed (Ezio had only signed with the company after they promised he wouldn’t have to deal with an understudy, and, yeah, they wouldn’t be doing THAT again, any time soon).

Thankfully, the guy that had been hanging around with Rebecca, helping (playing) with the lights and generally making a nuisance of himself in Shawn’s book, turns out to be some sort of former dancing Prodigy, he is everything they need covered in a ton of rust, they just have to convince him to let them shake it loose for him.

Shaun is making notes he’ll compare later with Lucy, their Director, while he watches Desmond finishing the last few steps of his big solo, marveling at his amazing progress; thanks to the Animus, the show will go on.

Swan Lake(male cast)/Assain's Creed - I Couldn't Help Myself!

[identity profile] sunnymcgee.livejournal.com 2013-04-08 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Altair flies through the air as effortlessly as the Swan he embodies, graceful and cocky as ever, taunting both Malik, the dancer, and the Prince he is portraying in a graceful whirl of limbs.

That night, when the Prince kisses the Stranger, Malik kisses Altair, leaving both dazed and a little breathless, out of character, they stare at each other for just a moment, before stepping right back into the dance with no one else the wiser, but though the steps are as they have always been, there is an underlying passion that was never there before, adding something the audience cannot help but feel, too; a promise of things to come.

"Can you keep a secret?"

"Yes," said Malik," but that is not the question. The question is , can you keep silent?"

Assassin's Creed, Connor/Ellen & Maria, fresh start

[personal profile] mustachio 2013-03-24 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ellen can't help the smile that creeps onto her face at the sight of Connor and Maria climbing together, Connor always trailing close behind to make sure the young girl doesn't fall-- it's a nice sight, that.

Connor is smiling now in a way that was once much rarer, especially in the months succeeding Achilles' death; now, though-- now his smile comes a little more freely; whatever work he'd been doing is over and though it's been nearly two years since Connor had returned to them on a slightly more permanent basis he's only just beginning to relax.

It's both a saddening and relieving thought that it's taken him so long to let go of the past, but at least he's finally done it, she supposes, and certainly she's very glad that he's let her and her daughter play such a big role in this new chapter of his life; she only hopes that they can give him a fresh start in the same way he once did for them.

I'm not at all familiar with this fandom, but this was very hopeful and very sweet, and ended on such a positive note. Thank you for the fill!

Potential

David looks at the boy Star has ensnared and thinks “You’re not as bad as you think you are, little boy, but you could be.” So, he calls to her and challenges this ‘Michael‘, hoping to see what he is made of, that he is something David can work with; Max can go screw himself if he isn’t.

“Well, whaddya know,” David thought, not bothering to stop the smile that slithered onto his face, all it took was a game of chicken, and Michael was giving as good as he got, “this is going to be fun!”

"We've got angelology, ecology, paleontology," the receptionist said as she scanned the long list of night-study courses on offer. "Reflexology, technology, theology, zoology...no, I'm sorry, it looks like we don't have -what was it you said you practised?

"Headology," said Granny Weatherwax triumphantly.
