Moving on from Archivefail!

With my previous post, which [livejournal.com profile] l_a_r_m has now dubbed Archivefail! nearing 100 comments, I'm going to stop commenting over there. I won't close the comments or anything. While I have thought for a while that aspects of the Narnia fandom were regrettably ripe for a wank, I did not think it would be this particular variety. I have it on good authority from [livejournal.com profile] snacky that even here we aren't there yet.

Admittedly someone trying to lecture [livejournal.com profile] snacky and [livejournal.com profile] cofax7 on the history of fandom is pretty funny. There has been some additional comment activity which [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith linked to which included an allegation of threats of exclusion from the fandom because the blogger told an author With Lots of Very Important Friends that I think the way they treat their readers is despicable.

I don't think that's me (I don't think I've been called despicable by a reader (yet)). But if it is, that means you all are Lots of Very Important Friends and I certainly agree with that.

So with that, prompts for Narnia Big Bang begin tomorrow!!! Are you thinking of prompts to help people get ideas? I posed some in NFFR chat last night:

Beaver ninjas
Gay giraffes (which I'm actually going to use in the next chapter of AW)
VE Day

Also, it looks like the NFFR AsCast will be getting going again. Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

*squishes*

And now I have the most wonderful image of Mrs Beaver with ninja stars kicking arse. It is a most beautiful image :DDDD

Then you get RIGHT ON THAT! My prompts, such as they are, are:
1)finish H&M
2)get to next stopping point in AW

There are no ninja Beaver assassins in Spare Oom.

[identity profile] amine-eyes.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
:DDD and oooh you can do it!!!!!

[identity profile] andi-horton.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
There are no ninja Beaver assassins in Spare Oom.

But isn't the whole point of BEING a (successful) ninja assassin that nobody even know you are there? Perhaps you are playing RIGHT INTO THEIR HANDS.

Oh, dear Aslan. Beaver Ninja assassins. I can't stop laughing at the image of Mrs. Beaver with ninja stars! :)

I actually was in chat last night! But it was after you'd left, sadly.

As for prompts, I need to scour the net for cool quotes. I found some of these interesting in terms of prompts:

“Killing is unavoidable but is nothing to be proud of.”

“Lack of charisma can be fatal.”

“Trading a life for a life is fair enough.”

“You have to hurt others to be extraordinary.”

“It takes a while before you can step over inert bodies and go ahead with what you were trying to do.”

“There is a period when it is clear that you have gone wrong but you continue. Sometimes there is a luxurious amount of time before anything bad happens.”

-- those are all from Jenny Holzer.

I'm sorry I missed you in chat!!! Are you finding any inspiration for Big Bang?? I hope so! I like the lack of charisma one. That would be a great Peter or Susan prompt... or an opportunity for Calormene worldbuilding..?

[personal profile] cofax7 2011-10-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have posted prompts! Um, dunno about inspiration, though. That well appears to be dry at the moment. We'll see.

[identity profile] snitchnipped.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Grrr. I had a few Big Bang prompts written up yesterday in preparation for tomorrow... and then my laptop wouldn't wake up this morning and I had to reboot. Lost them all. Grrr.

GRRRRRRRRRR. WRITE MORE. Though, you know what you are doing for Big Bang, so....

GAY GIRAFFES YES PLEASE.

You get right on that! I have:
1) trying to finish HM
2) trying to get the next part of AW to something

Kick.
People have been waiting for ages, you know.

Oooo, prompts! Prompts I could do.... :-D It's hard to move my mind past gay giraffes, though.
ext_418583: (Default)

[identity profile] rthstewart.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be hard pressed to include gay giraffes in H&M. Now, Swans -- that could work. I just don't think there are giraffes in Narnia?

[identity profile] linneasr.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if there are camels...

Or is Narnia truly only a temperate-zone kind of place? I mean, if there are panthers and cheetahs, why not camels and giraffes?

There are elephants, as per MN! There are obviously lions! Why not giraffes as well?

Really! I'm working on it! along with all the other stuff I've written! Really! Promise!

Two things occurred at once that were not on the schedule and so were worrisome in that they were unexpected. The newly installed telephone – there because of Asim’s work (whatever it was at the moment but obviously very intense) – pealed at the precise moment there was a frantic ringing of the front door bell.

Polly's immediate thought was that it was a disaster in the War that was summoning Asim, but the reports from Guadalcanal and Stalingrad had not been any more horrific than might have been expected and might even be better.

Asim rose from his morning coffee for the telephone on the assumption it was for him. On the roster, it was Kun’s turn to get the door and on his way to the front hall he grabbed some coin from the kitchen till in case it was a messenger boy from the village. Anyone local and deliveries came to the back door.

Polly did not want to listen, of course, but everyone at the table held a collective breath. The telephone was very new and they still thought it only to be used in the most dire of emergencies.

“Of course,” Asim said politely. “A moment please. She is right here.”

There was a little gasp from Lee – a death? But Asim shook his head. “Polly, it’s the Zoo on the phone,” and handed her the receiver.

Oooh, snippets. We like snippets : )

[identity profile] katharhino.livejournal.com 2011-10-17 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
*bounce!* Naturally the zoo calls Polly, heeee.

[identity profile] l-a-r-m.livejournal.com 2011-10-17 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
We do love snippets! Who else wants an Asim calendar of Asim doing householdy things like answering the phone and taking the soufflé out of the oven? Asim doing laundry with no shirt clothes on!

[identity profile] min023.livejournal.com 2011-10-17 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Will there be chocolate? I could be in that ;-)
ext_418583: (Default)

[identity profile] rthstewart.livejournal.com 2011-10-17 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You talk to [livejournal.com profile] l_a_r_m about Asim and chocolate. I have nothing to do with that. I inserted Asim and the 60% cocoa solids with my BF Col. Clark and that's the limit of my creativity insofar as chocolate is concerned and I don't think the chocolate-lovers ever weighed in on it when I posted it! Obviously, Asim therefore enjoys most imitation chocolate-flavored food product with artificial flavors.

you get right on that visual-intense project, LARM. Me, not so much. There's no souffle. Asim is a camp cook.

Ah, the wonders of the telephone. And yet, I'm reminded of an episode of "Downton Abbey" where the Downstairs folks were trying to figure out how to use it and were also thinking it should not be used in case of dire emergencies.

... and I don't suppose the Zoo is calling to ask her to come down and sort out the mess about some strange Lion running amok at Experiment House?

http://rthstewart.livejournal.com/57392.html?thread=903984#t903984

This marks the third time I will have written this segment -- once in a draft that had this scene occurring in 1947 when Experiment House was but a few miles from Russell House (Sorry, Ma'am, I'm so late this morning but there was a dreadful ruckus at the school and the hospital staff were called in), and then again in Under Cover. I think it's one reason why it's taking me so long. This is squarely in the area of territory I'd never, ever intended to cover.

Gay giraffes? *laugh* Now I'm looking forward to this.

Sorry that ArchiveFail is beating you up so hard; I can't believe the blogger so completely thought she had the right to just appropriate stories without asking first. But what will you, some people are coming from another galaxy.

*goes off to look for latest fics from you because I am wayyyy behind*

[identity profile] rthstewart.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Waves! Archivefail! has been weird and sad but not all that stressful for me -- though it's certainly been hard for some of the F-list and so that makes me sad on their behalf. the beating up has been occurring in other fronts, RL and fic, but these things too shall pass.

[identity profile] animus-wyrmis.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
At least we now know that you are officially a BNF?

I REALLY LIKE YOUR PROMPTS. GAY GIRAFFES INDEED.

As for AsCast, oh man! I love the book discussions and I also love the in-depth character analyses that have happened a couple times. ALSO FIC RECS, especially as you're discussing SC and I feel like there is a lot less fic in that era.
ext_418583: (Default)

[identity profile] rthstewart.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with Cofax and Snacky that the blogger is probably referring to BNF situations in Twilight. There are some people on some other Narnia sites who are very plugged into the movie production and I guess maybe Elecktrum might be a Narnia BNF. I don't know that there's anyone in the Narnia fic fandom with that same cachet. I was rather confused by it.

GREAT ideas for AsCast! THANK YOU. Yes, I think fic recs would be great, and going through the recent NFE

[identity profile] animus-wyrmis.livejournal.com 2011-10-27 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess if one of the lj people got very upset we could all...band together...? And...disapprove?

Idek what's going on in the Twilight fandom, but I wish she wouldn't bring it into ours. :(

Yes! Also The Magician's Book is not-religious meta on Narnia, I really enjoyed it and think it would make an interesting discussion.

I don't think I've been around for a couple of weeks. Very busy - not only at work ...
I used to stay late at work and read fanfiction sometimes, and now we've got a new server with a new firewall and such, and it doesn't allow me to post on LiveJournal or on ff.net. No reviews other than from home.

And my alert list in my mailbox is growing, especially with those few stories I've read but not been able to review ...

And soon it's November, NaNoWriMo, and I want to write fanfiction - Narnia/Silmarillion cross-over. When there isn't even time to read all that I want?

One of the Big Bang prompts fits my NaNo cross-over concept, though ...

It is lovely to see you! I have missed you and keep hoping to see your name pop up somewhere! I do hope all is well! The mini Big Bang is only 10,000 words. Also, do you know any artists? We need them for the Big Bang too! A Narnia/Sil cross over would be wonderful!
