What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

Shannon is someone that kid could aspire to, an ideal too perfect to exist, with plenty of friends and social graces. When the witch arrives to spirit herself away in the night, Shannon is all that’s left behind, and she’s forgotten she ever had a roommate, forgotten she used to be the roommate.

She’s just…Shannon…ordinary, fumbling, imperfect Shannon, who just needs someone to open their eyes and give her a chance.

oh shannon! she breaks my heart, she used to the be ideal, and then she was stuck being herself. i love the phrasing of 'when the witch arrives to spirit herself away in the night,' and the use of 'open your eyes' (without love it, can't be seen), oh, that's good.

yeah! shannon is so good, and it can be tempting to think she's too good, too submissive and too easily-satisfied with her lot, but then when you learn more about how she turned out this way, it's just heartbreaking and you can see how brave she is. and thank you, i was fond of 'when the witch arrives to spirit herself away in the night' as well, i'm glad it landed for you.

any, any, thwarting of a romantic trope

"There's only one bed," Lorelai said, looking at Luke for confirmation.

"Have you been reading romance novels again?" Luke retorted, discarding the cushions in top of the couch and pulling out a hide-away from it. "If you're known for offering crash space to someone, there's always another bed somewhere," he said.

“It is a very good story, and I should like to see it performed one day, but I have sometimes wondered if Beatrice and Benedict would truly be happy together,” Miss Morland admitted upon the close of their reading, prompting Mr. Tilney to ask if this doubt “owed more to the contrivance of the narrative or the weakness of the author in telling it?”

“Neither: only I wonder that people who never got along before should find their company so very agreeable later on, when all they have ever practised is quarreling.”

The remainder of their conversation was both an examination of and model for the opposite behaviour, where companionable solicitude for the opinions and feelings of the other replaced quips and wit as the true foundation of a couple’s growing intimacy.

Any, any, these Turkish delights have Turkish ends

“Baths?” echoed Jadis in unaccustomed bafflement.

It was the only other Turkish thing Edmund could think of (not that he’d ever admit Peter was right to rag him about neglecting his studies), but maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

“Royal baths,” he repeated with emphasis, noting the gleam of interest on the Witch’s face — and even as he babbled and spun his preposterous scheme, he was calculating what quantities of steam would be required to melt a castle of ice (and if it worked, it would jolly well prove to Peter that he hadn’t neglected *all* his studies!).

Any, any, diamond of the first water

She is called Satine, the Sparkling Diamond, for how her beauty captures the eye and the imagination, but they forget that the glitter comes from each facet throwing the light in a different direction, and that she has a façade for almost any situation. Gems are made with pressure and time, and her loyalty will always be to the other girls formed by the same circumstances, because the Moulin Rouge is her home and her family.

She cannot forget that she is living in a material world, so she makes the hard, sharp, practical decisions when she is out of options and has to climb just to keep from falling.

“Pearls are made from all sorts of refuse,” Henry defended her choice before that irresistible friendly glow dimmed farther. Deciding to turn the tables, he added with all the superiority of his old prep school days, “Personally, I think Blaine’s antihero trajectory this season as much in conversation with Steinbeck's questions about ambition and morality as anything done by Walter White.”

Just in time for Halloween, a return to the Northanger Abbey skating AU, with a passing reference to John Steinback's novella The Pearl.

Any, any, accidental fix-it

She tripped. All she did was trip and it fixed everything (or, as much as could reasonably be fixed). The TARDIS felt very bad for making her Wolf trip, but the timelines told her that if her Wolf hadn't tripped and twisted her ankle making her Thief hover (jus' a twisted ankle, Doctor, don' need to hover like 'm dyin'), then her Thief would have gone and hurt her Wolf's heart even worse than her ankle and made everyone's life more difficult, so the TARDIS didn't feel too bad about it.

Who could have known that Wen Ruohan, the most feared, most powerful, most murderous, most... everything Clan Leader of his or almost any generation could be killed by falling off his own cliff into the lava lakes below?

Who could have predicted that some totally unknown person would leave a toy in the shape of a little golden sun lion just when his foot would turn on it, making him stumble and stagger and fall off his own cliff into the lava lakes below?

Who could possibly have expected him to go out to his own cliff, with the lava lakes below, in the dark and all alone...?

(Except for the ghosts, so many ghosts. Who dragged him there, who threw him over, who watched him fall. Who smiled and vanished into sparkles of red and gold dust as he died.)

It had to have been an accident....

A poisoned newt. Ceyaxochitl had almost died because of a poisoned newt. It was entirely likely that she’d live with pain and weakness in her limbs for the rest of her life, and all because some nobleman had seen her power and knowledge as a threat. Thank the Duality for Acatl and Teomitl, who’d taken care of that particular mess for her.

But that didn’t mean she could get out of training up her successor, so on a particularly good day she sat down with Teomitl’s betrothed, set her cane across her lap, and asked, “How would you feel about becoming the Guardian of the Duality after me?”

Mihmatini looked first at her and then at her cane, and then said—very politely—“No thank you.”

She’d expected that. Coolly, she brought up her other major point. “No one would be able to stop you from marrying who you wished. Not even the man who thinks he’s going to be the next Emperor.”

“You don’t think the council will elect Tizoc-tzin?”

Without meaning to, she found herself smiling. Ah, such a bright young girl. “I think even if they do...well, we can find a way around him.”

Or through him. Men were so fragile, after all. Young Teomitl had all the bravery and intelligence his elder brother lacked, and was far easier to keep in check. When she and Mihmatini worked together, what couldn’t they achieve?

It wasn't planned, I never expected it, and yet suddenly he was there and we had to be together. You can judge all you like, but you can't say you'd have done differently when overpowered by so much love. And now, there seems to be no alternative, and yet I fear somehow it will not work out.

You know me - ending on a downer!

it's one of the things i love best about your writing! and considering the source song is from the climax of a musical called murder ballad, i can't think of a more appropriate place to end on a downer!

It's strange because I normally prefer an upbeat ending, but with Shakespearean tragedy there really is only one way to go.

Gabriel could never be happy without Émilie—very well, he should have allowed himself to be unhappy, and permitted her son to be happier than he: Adrien is not happy with Émilie, though he does not (as she does, as his father does) recall that she was ever absent, ever ill, that Nathalie was once present, that Émilie ever didn't wear earrings or that a girl in vibrant red ever did, that the baker on the corner ever had a daughter.

(At least Nathalie chose to erase herself from the narrative for love of another—to erase herself.)

What was created can be unmade and what was destroyed can be reconstructed, what never was can briefly be—a glimpse of Émilie's face overwriting Ladybug's is enough for her husband to hesitate half a heartbeat, long enough to score a bleeding line over the girl's breast instead of driving the Butterfly blade through her heart and tearing it out from between her ribs, long enough for Adrien to rip the sword from Gabriel's grasp and return the blow—and if neither ever learns why this levels the mansion, why they must pluck their own jewelry from Émilie's corpse as well as the two brooches they have been seeking—well, Adrien did always prefer getting his hands dirty: learning baking from his father-in-law will please him.

Few things were Sumadara Kyrie’s alone, and fewer still she didn’t fight for. Her inheritance was long days hunched in the tea room, studying ceremony and the tools of torture; it was blood and duty and betrothal to a man she knew nothing about except the logic they made on paper.

So when her heart seized on someone for herself, she threw away the Sumadera name without a second thought — it was nothing of hers, she would be all his, and she refused to share.

this is so good, every time i go to respond i just end up reading this fic over and over and savoring every line and forget to reply! that first sentence is such an establishing shot of a complex character, and then the second perfectly draws out her previous life with her family's expectations and inheritance into a very clear picture of how she would be stifled by it.

and then the end!! and she refused to share! that's her, that's kyrie!!

She shouts and scowls and shudders at him, but in truth, was it not she who violated the sanctity of his dreams first? Alina, limned in light; Alina, unkempt and laughing; Alina Alina Alina--

He tells her as much once, and is almost certain he does not mistake the catch of her breath, the widening of her eyes, before her face goes battle-hard once more.

Oh, this is so hot, and that little hint that he's right and she knows it-!! Yesssss. Alina, unkempt and laughing is such a great description, especially coming from the elegant, put together, very serious Darkling - that he thinks of her like that and loves it is just everything. You do his pov so well!!

The part where Alina realizes the dream telepathy goes both ways was what I was thinking of--but like, the possibility, one or either of them could accidentally activate it unthinkingly is...unfortunate.
(Thank you! I think part of the draw for him is that while she is The Only One Like Him, she's also so diametrically different that it fascinates him all the more.)

Kaz stares at the map positioned above his bed with its pins tracking Inej’s travels. From his seat by his desk, he rubs his bad leg and wishes for the calm and steady ground of his bedroom in the Slat to rock like that of The Wraith’s.

Dear Inej, he writes, knowing already this letter will find itself burned to ash on his bedroom floor within the hour, I wish you were here.

The imagery of Kaz's room rocking like a ship's cabin is so effective, and his knowing that he'll never actually send the letter even as he starts it is so Kaz, and so sad! JUST TELL HER, you dummy!!! It's exactly what I had in mind for the prompt, thank you!

He hardly recognizes Alina even as she darts through the crowd towards him, and it's not the Grisha splendor she wears, or the new softness of her cheeks, the heightened color of her complexion--instead it's the happiness that shines from her, the sparkle of her eyes, the mouth no longer held in a frightened scowl.

This, Mal thinks dazedly, is what a Sun Summoner ought to be.

And he finds he cannot hate the General for that--can hate the fellow for a dozen other things, but not Alina's joy--and even as Alina returns to the pavilion, come to bless the troops in a transparent excuse to visit her old friends, Mal ducks his head in silent thanks.

(I like how I can tell this is show!Mal even without "the General" reference, because book!Mal would NEVER lol.)

His view of Alina here is so sweet, all the little changes he notes in her and how they leave him dazed, and how quietly happy he is for that. AND how he still hates Aleks for "a dozen other things"!! He can't be too nice, haha.

Ha! Book! Mal would just complain about how she'd changed, and how she didn't have time for him any more, and how dare she be the more popular one, and *sigh*
(Even show! Mal's gratitude only goes so far!)

Ugh, book!Mal is just one of my least favorite characters ever, and that is exactly why!

It is pretty natural that Mal would be jealous, yes...can't really blame him for that, look at what he's up against!

Star Wars, Leia Organa, jedi!Leia

Luke's lightsaber feats and his mind tricks don't impress her, and Anakin's ghost is more of an annoyance than a blessing at times. But when she walks through the ruined temple on Coruscant, she feels--whether through the Force or just her imagination--the echoes of a thousand generations who have come before her.

They, too, are part of her heritage, and if there's a chance to bring some small fragment of that family back to life, Alderaan's daughter will not let it slip by.

Oh I love this so much! Leia would care about that being a part of her heritage, especially with already having lost so much of it

I love Leia seeing the Jedi as part of her heritage too, and the connection to Alderaan is perfect.

The moment Han Solo realized he was going to marry Leia Organa was when she decided she was going to stop blaster bolts with her mind. It wasn't that decision that sparked it, but more his reaction to it (which mostly consisted of immediate acceptance and looking around for some safety gear). It had all worked out for him, though, because when an assassin invaded their wedding two years later, Leia just rolled her eyes and flicked her hand at the blaster bolt, which stopped in mid-air.

yes! This is both sweet and cool, with Leia being a badass, love it!

I love Han just rolling with Leia's Force powers, and I love Leia becoming so comfortable with it that it becomes second nature to just stop blaster bolts with your mind, nbd. :-D

(takes place after a ficblurt that I don't feel like combing my old Tumblr to find; in it, Leia goes Dark and kills Tarkin after witnessing Alderaan's destruction, and Vader goes 'mine now yoink' and carts her off to go teach her Dark Side stuff so they can overthrow the Emperor together. Neither of them know they're blood relatives yet, at least not consciously.)

Darth Vader was constantly moving in and out of her life, his time split between training her and continuing to act as the Emperor's enforcer. Leia, too, was constantly on the move - her cover as Senator had definitively been blown, and she was both inconvenienced and freed by that fact. (She was also freed by a certain shift in perspective, resorting to tactics she would have shunned before. Let her allies worry about her mental state - they hadn't seen what she'd seen.)

But somehow, no matter where she was in the galaxy, Vader always caught up with her when he wanted to. It never got easier, to turn a corner or enter a safehouse to find Him standing there. The hate rushed up into her head every time.

Vader approved. He would teach her, he promised, to turn that hate into power.

In turn, Leia promised that she'd become more powerful than him, and destroy him when she was; but still, in her more sane moments she wondered what had been done to Vader that his power was still superior to hers - what world had disintegrated before his eyes.

ooohhh I love this! Especially that last sentence

Oh, Leia - her grief and anger is so palpable, and all the power she has from it is both heady and terrifying. And the moment of understanding at the end is poignant, too.

ahhhh, this is gorgeous and raw, and that understanding at the end is painful and almost freeing in its clarity. what a terrific au!

Star Wars, Leia Organa & Padmé Amidala, Leia travels back in time and becomes one of Padmé's handmaidens

Queen Amidala casts an eye over the gaggle of women eager to serve and protect her, unsure how to ask of them what she must, that one or more might stand in her place to keep her safe from harm.

Sabe has taken on the role of decoy before and will do so again if asked, Padme is sure, but there is another in the group that catches the queen's eye, so similar in looks to herself that it sends a jolt of... something through her.

"My queen, whatever you require of me," the young woman says, dropping to her knee in a deep bow, and though Padme believes Leia would die for the cause, somehow she thinks it is more than that, so very much more.

aahh this is so cool!! What a power duo they would be, Padme with a force-sensitive handmaiden who is also versed in politics and fighting would be basically unstoppable, lol

Star Wars, any, role-swap

Cassian howls as the Bor Gullet ravages his mind, picks apart everything he did in the Empire's name. These Partisans are the ones Galen believes in, that they've risked everything to reach out to? The Empire may be cold, but at least they're disciplined.

Meanwhile, in Jedha City, Agent Rook lets the half-familiar scent of the sands wash over him. It's only luck that brings him back to his homeworld; there is no room for nostalgia in wartime. But when the monks tease him and call Local boy?, he can't help but smile.

I can totally see this and it's a fascinating change. Love it!

Like most instances when Han got himself into some type of trouble, it was Chewbacca's judgement that he'd brought it on himself. Talk enough pudu about the Force to a Jedi - and the old Human was a Jedi or Chewie was a mynock's uncle - and you're bound to get a demonstration. And there had been a hint of something - some anticipation or interest in the elderly hermit's eyes, and Chewie thought maybe he was finally going to get an explanation for Han's inexplicable, trouble-defying luck.

Thus, while Han was currently occupied learning how to not get his ass fried by a training droid, Chewie had occupied himself assessing the piloting skills of their other passenger. Luke had asked Threepio to translate between them, but they barely needed his input - strange intuition or no, Luke had a talent for flying.

oohh what a cool role swap! I love that it's in Chewbacca's pov

The possibilities of this are awesome, as is Chewie's narration! (Also, the mental image of Han trying to lightsaber fight against the training droid is hilarious).

Star Wars, any, if it was fantasy instead of science fiction

Darth Vader lowered his sword and prodded Kenobi’s empty robe with his boot in growing frustration — the old man’s magic had been strong, yes, but this?

He ignored the three brash young heroes galloping away on their horses; he would track them through the debris of Castle Alderaan by the scent of their desperation, if not the young one’s magic, already tainted by Kenobi.

Overhead, the Death Star hovered: a writhing ball of gas and flame clenched by the fist of Vader’s magic, waiting only for his command and a direction to strike.

this is terrific and keeps the tone and stakes of the original while also capturing the mood of a fantasy story. i love it!

This actually intersects with a broader AU I've been tossing around, where Helen dies of illness alongside her brothers, forcing the gods to...improvise.

In that first hazy instant after waking, the king of Eddis imagined Death herself to be waiting at the end of his bed, so icily beautiful was the woman shrouded in gray who sat there; and in response he only smiled, crooked and content. He said, "You've come rather late, if you meant to collect me with the rest of my cousins. You might have spared me the coronation, at least; the crown made my head ache terribly."

"You're a fool," said Irene shortly, years of hard work as the first Thief of Attolia having eroded what was left of the Shadow Princess' patience, "and not a very good one, either. Now get up and get dressed; I've come to steal you."

Oooh, this is so intriguing! Of course I regret the loss of Helen, but Irene the Shadow Princess!! She would be incredibly impatient, and her calling him not only a fool, but not even a good one makes me laugh. And Gen's attitude is perfect - weary but still sharp and humorous, and always with a complaint.

Gen in this AU is much sadder, and Irene more uninhibited, so that I imagine they'd actually meet in the middle wrt levels of angst/dysfunction as opposed to canon *shrugs*.
(I miss Helen, too! I wish there were a way that the premise didn't demand her death :/)

Aarghh this is fantastic!! I love it, love them, Irene the Shadow Priness as the Thief of Attolia is perfect. If you do write that AU I would love to read it!!

She'd be so good at it! Everything Irene does, she does 110%.
(Hopefully someday soon, I'll figure out how to fiddle all the pieces into place!)
