Happy Boxing Day

We returned from the not all frozen North where I managed to squeeze in lovely visits with [personal profile] syrena_of_the_lake and [personal profile] psyche29 . I just adore meeting imaginary friends in Real Life and we've known each other through fic for a very, very long time.

If you did Yuletide, I hope you loved your gift and that your gracious recipient loved yours. It did seem there was more than the usual pinch hit scrambling.  What those admins can pull together every year is astounding. If you see a good story, rec me, OK?

We picked up McKinley at the hospital yesterday. I'm glad she can be at home for whatever time is left to her. Thanks so much to all of you for the kind thoughts.  This is a better, though very, very costly, outcome than I'd expected a few days ago.  She was thrilled to be home after over a week in the hospital.

She has lots of pills -- for pain, nausea, and high blood pressure and has become very resistant to pilling. Anyone have any ideas? I'm used to a dog taking your fingers off so this is a new problem.  I think we might need to go the meat route -- I remember liverwurst growing up?  Maybe there's something at PetSmart?

Also, SEE WHAT I GOT!! My spousal unit managed to track it down and I'm pretty excited.

Have you been to see any movies?  What's your favorite?  Mary Poppins?  Bumblebee?  Aquaman?  Spiderverse?

Also, wow the government shutdown sucks.  Although, the pre-published Federal Register just came out and a few folks are in if funded by non-appropriated money -- and others are supposed to trundle in for an orderly shutdown.  Ugh.  I'm sorry if it's you.  I  know this is super stressful.

Off to see Spiderverse this afternoon with my daughter. Very excited!

Spiderverse was absolutely fabulous, I'd watch it again in a heartbeat and I recommend it without any reservations whatsoever: it's fun, smart, ocacasionally so funny I wheezed from laughing so hard, visually stupendous, rooted in family and inhabiting liminal, cross-cultural places, and I want all the fic not to fix things but to expand on all the many, many tantalizing tangentials the movie has to offer.

Also, Miles Morales was my favorite spider-man going in, and that remains even more true having seen this movie. <3

The movie has something for everyone, hardcore fans and folks entirely new to 'Spider-Man' alike.

I saw Mary Poppins the day it opened, and loved it - it keeps both the spirit of the original and the spirit of the books in way that's lovely. (And both Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda are fantastic.)

Into the Spiderverse was amazing. It was a visual masterpiece with a unique, comics inspired look. The writing was excellent, the characters were amazing, and the emotional beats were just perfect. Heck, even the end credits scene was a gift.

Yes! I was prepared for the usual, and it was anything but that.

Haven't seen any of those yet, but I can anti-rec the new Fantastic Beasts, which I saw a couple days ago. It's pretty incoherent story-wise, and more so thematically.

If you haven't had a chance yet and it's still playing where you are, do make sure to see Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm not actually 100% sure if it's a good movie, or if it's just an ok movie that refrains from ruining the genius music it's built around, but regardless, I suspect it won't pack as big a punch on a small screen.

...I may possibly be chronically behind on movies. :)

I'm so glad McKinley's home with you now. Good luck with the giving-of-pills. (Are there Pill Pockets for dogs? We use them for our cats and so far it's mostly worked, although we've also never had to give long courses of pills, and Jinksy did get suspicious after a bit.)

My spousal unit managed to track it down and I'm pretty excited.

Excellent work, spousal unit! ^_^

yeah, the furlough sucks. It would suck more if we didn't expect to get paid later, but it's terrible for people without any money set by, and all the contractors. And the scientists whose experiments are ruined! Me, I'm using the time to make croissants.

Glad to see McKinley home.

I'm glad McKinley is home with you now. Is there a compounding pharmacy in your area? We have a veterinary compounding pharmacy that makes flavored prescription chewies for dogs and cats. They can also make just about any pill into a liquid. McKinley would have a tough time spitting that out!

It's wonderful to read that McKinley gets to be home with you, where she belongs.

Pill strategies:

Cover the pill in peanut butter. Wrap it up in lunch meat. Bury it in a slice of hotdog.

That is a gorgeous bag! And a gorgeous doggo - I'm glad you're getting to have some time together. I remember we had success with peanut butter and pills, and sometimes pushing the pill into a piece of hotdog.
