3 Sentence Ficathon

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

EDIT!  THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS,  PLEASE POST NEW PROMPTS
HERE!

CaramelSilver isn’t running the awesome 3 sentence ficathon this year, but she said I could do it in her place!!  (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!)

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

How long can it go?
CaramelSilver kept the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon up for a month.  I'd suggest closing it on Sunday, April 7, 2013.  How does that sound? (edit:  If we reach 5,000 comments sooner, I'll start a new one).

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

As  [personal profile] lady_songsmith explains, for the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine created a delicious account to archive the 3 Sentence Ficathon.   [personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, so, here is the account (nothing current added yet, though): https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

Yeaah, I was a bit worried this drabble would be perceived as OOC for that very reason... but the myth about Daphne is horribly problematic as it is, I didn't really feel like opening that particular can of worms for a three-sentence drabble. In an ideal universe, even gods feel guilt. :P

You're welcome. <3

I'm glad; the first draft focused considerably less on the aspect of guilt, and while I perceived that as more in tune with the original myth it also made me super-uncomfortable to rob Daphne even of her victimhood... because while Apollo would probably pity himself for his broken heart, he's not the one who got turned into a tree (she's not even really allowed to control that one last act of defiance).

With the Greek gods we do so often see the ugliest sides of human psyche - jealousy, vindictiveness, etc - it's sort of nice to think they are capable of the more positive ones as well. Thank you for the comment. :)

I have something of a soft spot for Apollo, even though he's a dick like, 90% of the time. So a version of him that actually has some remorse is perfect for me!

It is a pretty horrible myth...I think that's why I keep prompting it, in hopes that someone can make something less awful of it, as fandom tends to do with Hades/Persephone.

To be fair, the majority of the Greek gods are dicks 90% of the time. You reach a point where you think that "this is as bad as it's going to get", and then your teacher brings up the Niobids in a PowerPoint presentation... :P

It's been my favourite myth since I was seven (for reasons unknown even to myself; I think the transformation sequence was very captivating to my younger self) so I definitely like having a crack at it... but in the case of Persephone, she at least has a choice, or what can be perceived as a choice, while Daphne really is the victim of circumstance and a petty quarrel between gods. What you can do is write a version where Apollo is also a victim of sorts (though at least with precedence, unlike Daphne); in a way, neither of them consent to the tragic event they get involved in, as it's being engineered by Eros.

Ha, this is true enough, they're all pretty terrible. I find it hard to get past the whole "this dude is a better musician than me? Oh, I'll just FLAY HIM ALIVE" thing with Apollo, which is pretty much the most massive overreaction of all time.

Yeah, Daphne gets the short end of the stick (no pun intended). Now I kind of want fic where Apollo is driven mad by guilt and tries to get revenge on Eros.

(Since it's your favorite myth, have you ever heard the song Daphne by Lia Ices? Along with Waterhouse's painting of Daphne & Apollo, which I've always loved, it's what gave me renewed interest in the myth.)

Yup, that hubris is a certain ticket to a painful death, apparently. The thing with Arachne appalled me even when I was too young to grasp what hubris was, because you'd think a goddess of wisdom would be less... petty.

I'm also interested in what Daphne's parents (whoever you choose to think they are) would have to say afterwards...

(No, but now I have, and it's lovely. I'm such a sucker for mythological motifs in song; Anaïs MItchell's Hadestown is probably one of the most played albums on my iPod...)

Yeah, Arachne is another one that's awful. The gods were some jealous bastards, that's for sure.

Parents never seem to have much to say in these myths, possibly because the same things might happen to them...

(Glad you liked the song! Songs about other stories/art are the best things ever.)

True, but that's also why fic/other derivative work can be so interesting to read and fun to write. :)

(Songs with narratives in general tend to speak to me; everything from folk to medieval ballads, tbh.)
