Anons, Guests and Lurkers -- also a rec

It is BANNED BOOKS WEEK!  go forth and be subversive!

Over the past couple of days, I have noticed an uptick in kudos over on AO3 and to a lesser extent, a number of anon and guest reviews on fanfiction.net.  So, if, after reading, you pop over here, welcome and hello and thanks so much!  If you are new and did find this and are so inclined, I'd love to know how you found me.  Is there some recent post, or a stray comment somewhere that sent you into the wallow and bottomless pit that is my rambling?  Anon commenting is enabled here so drop a line if you want to and introduce yourself if you like.

I know there's one recent rec in comments to a Susan story courtesy of therck (and thank you!).  To that end, if you have not seen it, ursulav  wrote an amazing problem of Susan story, Elegant and Fine, It is wonderful so do go check it out.  [livejournal.com profile] wellinghall also mentioned Ursula's story in comments an entry or two ago here, so now I am reccing it properly!

I had wondered if the uptick over on AO3 is due to a Tumblr post a new reader told me about which warned people away from my work.**  The reader looked at the stories that were recc'd, decided they were not her favorite flavor of delicious cake and decided to check out those who were condemned, meaning me, for which I am so grateful!  Huzzah for new, cool imaginary friends! So, I wondered if others might have seen the same post and come via the same circuitous route!?

**(This isn't new.  Would-be readers have been warned away from me for years, I'm way too old for this nonsense and wasted too much hand-wringing energy on it (and yours as well gentle reader).  I like playing over here in my sandbox with my cool, imaginary friends and our yummy snacks and the teens in my life think it's hilarious.  They call me a hippie.  (yes, I hope you didn't just snort Diet Coke through the laptop at that prospect)  So, I'm not reopening that can of slimy worm bits, but was wondering if others have come via the same route.  In which case, maybe I should thank my critic, yes?

Last, work on the final chapter of this part of the H&M story arc proceeds.  I thought it might go up this weekend, but it's  not.  Soon!  And an event that I sought to avoid last year, I have decided to embrace this year.  So, bring it on.

Its been quite a while ago but I think I found your work through a bookmark/rec on AO3 (maybe the person who wrote the Carpetbaggers?)

My story is I avoided Narnia fanfic even more thoroughly than I did other times, because I'd somehow got the impression it was a scary place in which perpetual war raged between fundamentalists who threatened with hellfire anyone sinful enough to suggest that Lewis was wicked enough to enjoy the occasional pint and pipe, and in the other corner people desperate to prove how grown up they were by writing incest!fic. Then someone who was a RL friend of several RL friends started dabbling, and a friend of hers recced Cofax7, and somewhere there Cofax7 recced Rth, and I decided there was a shallow end in which to paddle after all.

I can't actually remember how I got to your fic, I think it was one of those stumble-upon moments :D

Also, Ursalav's story is AMAZING and heart-rending :DD

Her story really is amazing and it's so interesting to see the discussion that it has motivated. It's just awesome to have a different, articulate, amazing voice look at The Problem of Susan and how many people have responded to it. I've seen it recc'd all over the place. And I admit I can't help thinking that if she posted it on fanfiction.net, she would have about 3 reviews and 2 of them would be criticisms for doing it wrong. I have those moments, periodically when I look up, lift my head out of the mire and realize, oh wait, YES, this is what it's like to be outside that community. The deep, freeing breathes are wonderful.

I've been lurking around for some time.

How I found you? I'd been looking for some good Narnia fanfic but had been unable to find any that didn't make me cringe. Eventually I was reduced to looking at all the TvTropes recs. Yours didn't sound particularly exciting, but I was desparate, so I opened it. And so I met The Stone Gryphon.

Of course, the first thing I saw was Mary's letter, so I took one look at the spelling and thought "forget this." Luckily I realized it was deliberate, kept reading, and I was hooked.

I've read The Stone Gryphon, Apostolic Way, and a fair amount of your shorter stuff--the only storyline I haven't really been able to get into is Edmund & Morgan, so I'm hoping you'll take a break from H&M sometime soon to work on Apostolic Way (hint, hint).

Anyway, I really love your writing, even if I am a terribly lax reviewer. But if you post another chapter of Apostolic Way, I promise to leave a review. Probably.

Thanks, Mori. I'm surprised anyone comes over here after that second TV Tropes review. That one is really ugly. Thank you for giving it a try regardless. Yes, I'll get back to AW. I just need to finish this last bit of H&M. I did do Rat and Sword Go to War, which was another 40,000 words!!!

Thank you for your patience.

You are anti-recc'd and it is banned books week. Isn't that beautiful? There's poetry there. You are Ray Bradbury; you are Salinger, Chaucer and Ovid.

You are Scheherazade.

You are in damn fine company, and I am glad to know you, and to read you whenever I can. Hugs.

It is truly for the best and I'm happy with where this has ended up. And I'm not in the same category as banned books AT ALL.

Thank you for the rec to Ursulov's story - brilliant portrayal of anger and rage, which works very well for me.

[identity profile] starbrowsings.livejournal.com 2012-10-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So...I read ursulov's fic and YES THIS. It's obvious (to me) that in PC Susan has significant psychological issues that she did not have to that extent in LWW. Lucy does too, but she was younger and her faith in Aslan was always different. It is much harder to believe that they went back to England without any scars from the transition, and yet it is equally sad to think that their memories of their adult lives would be taken from them with all the joys and wonderful things they experienced, to be transformed into ordinary children once again. Sad all-around. It's not hard to understand Susan's struggle, which was really beautifully presented in the fic.

Yay for the H&M progress and new readers! And I think I know the event of which you speak. I think? ;-)

[identity profile] heliopausa.livejournal.com 2012-10-04 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheers for the new readers! (It's only about five months since I was one of them, I think! :) ) And I used to hate to get to the end of really good books, and I will be feeling the same about Harold and Morgan, trying to find a way to read them as greedily as possible while trying to spin them out as long as possible. Really looking forward (apprehensively) to the chapter!

Also, solidarity for the unknown event, and salute for the gumption to embrace it.
