Three Sentence Ficathon Part 2

THE 2021 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!

THIS IS THE NEW POST FOR PART 2 OF THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON -- ALL NEW PROMPTS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE
You may continue to fill prompts (but not leave new ones) at the original Post 1 here.

[personal profile] conuly 's unclaimed prompt list here

Thank you all for participating! We had a rush of prompts at the end so be sure to check it out and if you want someone to fill something in particular, and assuming they don't mind being contacted (I know I  don't!), be sure to let them know!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly does this just because she is an awesome person but should you want to write her fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

You raise of lot of interesting points! Yes it would probably a slower victory, but maybe therefore also easier afterwards, as they (especially the Pevensies) would already have put a lot of work in gaining allies and getting to know Narnia and its people, and earning the respect of the Narnians, and then they might rise as leaders more naturally, and be guided by Yilan for a longer time. I'm thinking also a lot of guerrilla warfare.

And I definitely liked thinking about the different Narnians, as I thought it would make more sense for them to be more like Yilan, their god. Which also meant many of them would be cold-blooded, which would make the eternal winter a pretty clever move on Jadis' part. And yes Tumnus would definitely not be a faun, and the name might have to change. I like your suggestion of him being a Tengu, that seems to fit pretty well. I also thought there would probably be lamia and/or gorgons (who would be pretty pissed at Jadis turning people to stone), and maybe hydras, phoenixes (though they might be there in canon as well? I am not sure) and fire-salamanders. The possibilities are endless. And feathered Dinosaurs would definitely be badass, I figured there would be reptiles and birds in al gradations, and some of them being somewhere in between the two would also be cool.

Yes to all that!

You know, it's never actually said where Jadis got that turning-people-to-stone wand, so...maybe in this AU that thing is extra horrible because it's running off the power of a Gorgon that Jadis did some kind of nasty ritual murder to.

The sunbirds in VotDT are phoenixes, pretty clearly-living in the sun, immortal-so yeah I'd say those show up in canon. So do Salamanders, in Bism in TSC. Hydras and Lamiae both yes yes yes. Also, how about Nagas? I think they'd be wise mystic types like the Centaurs in canon. Amphisbaena. Eastern-style River-Dragons, all long and snakey. Cockatrices. Rocs!

Oohh, that is an extra horrible twist, but it definitely makes sense! Or maybe she took away their power of turning people to stone and now non of the Gorgon's can do it, and to make it even more horrible: imagine how they would feel if (when) Jadis uses it on one of them.

Ah, yes, it's been a while since I actually read to books, but I mean they can show up in both universes of course :). And you mention so many cool creature/beings! I love the idea of there being all these different kinds of snake and bird themed beings running around, especially since it's kind of ironic with the whole "Sons of Adam/Daughters of Eve" thing. Plus I also kind of like that some of them, like the gorgons and the harpies, are usually (or maybe always? But I mean, you can play with that) depicted as female, unlike fauns and satyrs and centaurs.
Aargh, so many possibilities!

Gorgons are interesting because in mythology they aren't a species per se. There's only three individuals that get that designation-and only one of those three, Medusa, has the power to turn people to stone. Some versions of the myth say Medusa is the sister of the other two (Euryale and Stheno), but there's also the story that Medusa was a human girl who got raped by the god Poseidon in the temple of Athena, and as a result was transformed into a monster.

A lot of people have already theorised that Athena might have intended not to punish Medusa but to give her a weapon against any man who'd try to do that again. Others think no, Athena was straight-up a victim-blaming creep. It's a troublesome story, especially considering Medusa's own death later at the hands of the hero Perseus (who Athena guided). As such, it's given storytellers a lot of material.

A Narnia full of unfamiliar creatures would also be an interesting challenge to the Pevensies; as Western kids from the mid-20th century, they're primed to associate reptiles and amphibians mostly with Bad Things, and they'd have to figure out how to look past that. (There is actually a bit in TLTWATW where they decide to trust a Robin, on no evidence one way or another, because robins have positive associations to them.) Possibly Jadis played on that with Edmund, seeing as how she looked human and attractive and thus less alarming; he might find it all too easy to believe that the native Narnians were these horrible slimy evil creatures rebelling against a decent Human ruler...

Hmm yes, that is true, though of course in writing you can shift it around, but an interesting story might also be that in this au Jadis might have created the Gorgons, maybe they were even her pupils or daughters or some such, until they abandoned her and she cursed them. Or, of course, the Gorgons are a part of Jadis army in this au. Both could be interesting. And yes, the myths/ideas about Medusa might indeed be used here! Jadis as Athena when one of the (soon-to-be) Gorgons takes something she considers hers/breaks a rule of hers? Maybe the Gorgons "cursing" themselves to protect themselves from Jadis? Again, lot's of possibilities!

And I definitely agree with you about the Pevensies and this new Narnia! Though of course the canon beings that inhabit Narnia might also be seen as evil and dangerous to the Pevensies with their Christian background. But yes, it would probably be even worse here, and I could definitely see Jadis using that with Edmund (maybe after he mentions "those slimy snakes" or some such).

Depending on where you're from you might've missed this, but; the Pevensies' brand of Christian culture probably wouldn't have very many feelings about fauns or centaurs or talking animals beyond 'wow, cool!' Remember that this was before the big kickback against fantasy by evangelical groups-and anyway, the Pevensies are much more likely to be Anglican, based on demographics and on the fact that Lewis himself was of that denomination.

Stuff like the Eden story would certainly inform their attitudes towards a Talking Snake. But so would just...the general cultural associations that go with snakes, especially in a time when keeping them as pets wasn't really a thing in England. (Well..some schoolboys did catch wild grass snakes and newts and whatnot to keep as pets-but that was kinda because they were seen as sort of gross and slimy. The kind of pet that would freak out your mother or sisters, if you see what I mean. But that was very much an immature-kid thing.)

Ah, no I was more talking about the sort of wild revelry/association with sex of for example fauns (like in rthverse? Don't know if you've read it?) and just the general Otherness of the Narnians, compared to what they are used to. But I'm not actually sure if the Pevensies would know about that first thing, so yes I agree that snakes and such would probably be worse. But I would have to dive into this a little more deeply to really determine/decide on that, right now I'm just kind of throwing ideas in the air and thinking about different possibilities ;)

[personal profile] eagleoftheninth 2021-02-21 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, the wild revelry bit would probably be something most mythology texts would kinda gloss over and bowlderise-and also Lucy and Edmund at least'd probably be too young to register any implications anyway.

Does throwing stuff in the air mean more might be forthcoming? *hopeful*

Hmm, I hadn't actually thought about it, but now that you mention it I will definitely see if I get anymore specific ideas! (Also, if you wanted to write something in this universe, I would also definitely be interested to read it!)
