3 Sentence Ficathon

3 Sentence Ficathon Banner

EDIT!  THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS,  PLEASE POST NEW PROMPTS
HERE!

CaramelSilver isn’t running the awesome 3 sentence ficathon this year, but she said I could do it in her place!!  (Banner courtesy of CaramelSilver and thanks so much!)

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do?
You post prompts!  When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character/pairing, prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish.  If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again!  Multiple fills of the same prompt allowed.

I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem.  You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes!  Please pimp this to your flist, I'd like as many as possible to come and participate!

I'm cross-posting to LJ but we will keep all prompts and fills here, so they are in one awesome place (and with less spam).

Here's a link for spreading the word to all your friends and comms (thanks [personal profile] snacky !)

How long can it go?
CaramelSilver kept the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon up for a month.  I'd suggest closing it on Sunday, April 7, 2013.  How does that sound? (edit:  If we reach 5,000 comments sooner, I'll start a new one).

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want.  Last year, a lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag.

Gosh who are all these people writing such great prompts and fills?
Good question!  Come to the friending meme and introduce yourself if you like.

As  [personal profile] lady_songsmith explains, for the 2011 3 Sentence Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine created a delicious account to archive the 3 Sentence Ficathon.   [personal profile] lady_songsmith has reactivated the archive on delicious for this challenge, so, here is the account (nothing current added yet, though): https://previous.delicious.com/3sentence She asks that if anyone would be willing to help knock down the backlog of the prolific-ness thus far, let her know!!  (She adds:  I know folks are kinda down on delicious with the changes, but, hey, it's an archive already set up with useful tags!)

On the subject of archiving, I really encourage people to collect and post their fills elsewhere.  That way, we can find your work more easily again, redundancy is always good and it's really useful for future remixes and other challenges and gift exchanges you might participate in. I'll start a linking post so that if you do collect all your fills and post them on your own blog or an archive like AO3, you can give give us the link in comments.

Shirakawa knows that he has no right to lay a claim to the boy because he's a boy. But before Ogata-sensei, and before Touya Meijin and before Kuwabara Honinbou, he held the boy's hand to guide him in his movements. He tells himself that he has the skill to manuever the boy to join him, but as the years go by and he watches Hikaru's skill grow, he's no longer quite as certain.

If it had bones, they would be creaking, but instead The Machine whirrs and beeps and lights up from the inside out, sparks and wires and code finally making sense.

The Machine finds its brain in words pieced together and phones on street corners and cameras with speakers in storefronts; it has eyes and ears and a voice and a mouth.

What is a brain, but little bits of mimicry from carefully caught observations; and what is it for but protecting those who have created you?

Oh my goodness, YES. This makes me so very happy, and I am actually cackling right now! I think this may be my new favorite AU of anything. Thank you!

People call them soft. The "soft sciences," with condescension dripping from every letter, but History pays them no heed.

She knows that she, with her eons of weaponry and wartime tactics, and Linguistics, with her sharp words carefully picked from the centuries, are nothing like soft.

He's frustrated because he works so hard to do his job, and even if there are a few mistakes, they don't change the end result. So, to have her come in and try to mask the flaws as though she's somehow contributing... He doesn't know how much she helps until she is an empty husk who has given her all just to bolster him.

Tulio still can't believe that after all that nonsense about friendship and idealism and beauty, Miguel was the one who left him--or maybe it's that after all the talk of independence and crime and sensibility, Tulio's still the one who got left.

"I've got places to see," Miguel said, bittersweet; he looks at Chel, says, "Besides, you don't need me any more."

He was wrong, Tulio thinks dazedly as, after five years, he sees that stupid head of blond hair again.

Look, this is simply how the stories go. Every sun god has their shadow, every bright chosen savior has their whispering soothsayer, every young hero has their voice of cynicism that points out the darker path.

Susan does not regret her choice to be that voice, and she knows Edmund does not regret his efforts to help her balance Peter and Lucy's brightness, but she thinks nevertheless she and her brother both look for ways to compensate - the art, the music, the laughter and the wine - their own means of light.

"See," Thomas says, smiling so smugly that Kate wants to kiss it off his face, "you're doing wonderfully, darling."

Kate rolls her eyes, 'stumbles' in the middle of their waltz--although, to be honest, she really doesn't mind dancing if it means being held so tightly.

"Oh," Thomas mourns: "Perhaps we'll have to keep practicing."

That one time on that mountain in Oregon, there was a lovely lady who asked Telo to go to dinner.

He told her no at the time (he was feeling so fuzzy, and it would just be easier not to try to connect).

But now he thinks back, still fuzzy and now aging, and regrets come spilling back: What if she would have made me feel clear again?

"Lynet, darling," Gaheris said, "you're very mature and powerful now and everything, but you're still horrible with directions; would you please just ask someone?"

"Shut up, Gary," Lynet said; "I did, earlier, and Morgan promised me it was this way."

"Morgan," Gaheris said--"Why didn't you say something before, we've been going the wrong way the whole time!"

The others are quick to defend him against the whispers, always. Edmund has changed, now, he's different, he was young and foolish.

He stops them - such whispers hold an advantage to them, form his character in the eyes of the world, make him someone who is an uncertain factor. "And are they inaccurate?" he says, and the others frown and shift. He doesn't think they enjoy being reminded that simply because he has changed does not mean what was always there is entirely gone.

Lee can't stop holding on.

They've both always been bad at that, letting go of the past, letting go of the things they can't have anymore and the memories that chase them across the years. They want to keep the things they love, even (perhaps especially) when they can't admit they love them.

Kara understands that, but she's been pulling free piece by piece anyways and sooner or later she's going to come loose and all his holding on won't do any good anymore.

She's not sure if she's longing for that day or dreading it.

Tightrope Walker (the line of duty nocturne)

Afterwards, leaving the rumpled bed and Angel asleep on it, she comes to stand beside Spike on the hotel balcony where he's smoking, ashes flickering down, and asks, "Was this why you didn't kill each other?"

He shrugs, takes a drag; eyes downcast, dismissive, "He knew how to throw a party, back in the day."

She thinks of screams and walls painted red and shudders, the ground swaying far below, before she rights herself and thrusts her chin up, eyes on the sky and the now - tonight isn't the night that she falls.

When she met Sherlock, he was a mess of an overgrown boy: too brilliant, too aware of his own brilliance for his own good, with no intention of “fitting in” – whatever that meant – and when he couldn’t find sufficient intellectual high from the problems in the world around him, he indulged in unsavoury substances that only ever ended up being a poor substitute for that high.

At first, her attention to him was born out of gratitude but soon, she realised how desperately he needed someone to simply tell him that, as much as he might want to, his body – his transport, as he called it – simply couldn’t keep on going for days without fuel; he was a child, wont to get lost in play, she realised, and she couldn’t bring herself to leave him to his own devices, though she tried to erect boundaries for herself. It wasn’t until that day, the darkest day of her life, which had seen its fair share of darkness, did she realise that somewhere along the way, he had become the child and comfort she never knew she needed; it didn’t matter anymore, though, because he was gone, and who needed her now?

Her hands are strong and warm, the muscles of her body firm. He's watched her kill with them, seen them shake with fear of him, of what he could do to her.

It's never easy to tell what she's thinking, but he knows that she is giving him something very real and very important simply by holding his hand right now, and he wishes he knew how to thank her for it.
