There are many ruins here, and I am one of them

13 hours in transit.  We finally arrived in Rome and are in a charming flat.  It was hell getting here, but we made it.  We went on a walking tour this evening with a guide who was just terrific along with a doctor from Liverpool.  Tomorrow we tackle the Vatican museums.  It's really crowded.  There are zillions of tour groups and lots of Americans who are on spring break.  Eldest child nearly fell apart a few times, but he knows way more about ancient Rome than either of his parents so he pointed out all the pink granite obelisks the Romans stole from Egypt.

All NBB things were done thanks to the herculean effort of [livejournal.com profile] autumnia[livejournal.com profile] snacky has done an amazing job running this thing, so it will be great when everything is done.  And [livejournal.com profile] heverus says she's doing art for my story, so I'm very happy about all of it, except possibly the story itself.  Heh.  [livejournal.com profile] snitchnipped and I collaborated on art (yes, you read that right, I did VISUALS) so that was fun.  Also I saw stone gryphons today.  More to come!

I sorta wanted to post some pics with people in them, but I'm still trying to sort out the public/private/fandom thing here.

Edit:  my silver lining just got seriously tarnished.  This is not a good place for those of us sensitive to noise at night.  11:30 PM, I've been up for the last 36 hours, two Benadryl and I don't think sleep is coming for hours.  It was so quiet here during the day.  Not at night.

I was going to send a "Safe Travels" text to you earlier today, only to see here now that I was too late! So glad you are all there safe! I cannot wait to hear (and see) all about it! You'll adapt to the noise.

Rome! I'm so excited for you. If you are getting to the Vatican museum when it opens, run for the Sistine Chapel and ignore all the stuff on the way. You can circle around and go back through the museum a second time and see everything you missed (or at least you could when I was there three years ago). Also, espresso is only 1 euro if you get it at the counter and drink it standing up, which might help with the lack of sleep thing. Have a fabulous trip!

I will second that. The Sistine Chapel is the most awe inspiring place I've visited.

I'm sorry it's too noisy to sleep :( but do have a wonderful time looking at all of the amazing prettiness!

(And just finished your NBB art - I apologize again for my suckiness. Woh woh.)

Regarding achieving a state of sleep in Rome: enjoy the wine (alot) with dinner. Helps the whole nighttime thing along quite nicely. And, remember: the Italians take a nap right after lunch, and generate the stamina to stay up waaay too late. When in Rome...

And, Roma is lovely. Have such a wonderful time!

this is glorious, beautiful, heartbreaking, and you are fabulous. I am crazy jealous, especially because I like just ate the last of my horde of milka bars last month. salivation! the coffee!

How were the vatican museums? I went on a free sunday and it was HELL. so much sweat and baby carriages! crammed in like sardines! I don't get it, what's a baby going to get out of it anyway?! claustrophobic tendencies later in life?

Have you had any rail adventures? ;)

Wow, amazing! Hope you get used the nighttime noise. That would drive me batty. Maybe try some white noise?

Oh, dear. Yes, that was my experience in Spain--which is why I booked a rather remote hotel in Barcelona, so we were away from Party Central. My sympathies: do you have any earplugs?
