My live with labs

So, as I mentioned in the previous post, I wasn't feeling the love regarding this recent chapter (I like the next one more, but at over 17,000 words, couldn't see combining them into one).  This has been aggravated by RL woes, which exploded into a new level of badness when I came home yesterday to find that our 5 year old Labrador had eaten a retrieving bumper -- 6 inches of soft plastic.  She's not a Hound, she doesn't talk, and her name isn't Jina, but she's my third yellow Lab bitch and she's a sweetie.  So, it's been two days and a long all nighter with trips to the emergency vet and what not.

Here's my girl, wearing the cone of shame.  What  you really need to imagine is that image below but her with a giant stuffed hedgehog plush toy in her mouth, while still wearing the cone of shame and trying to stuff the toy in my ear.

We are hoping to avoid abdominal surgery to remove the plastic.  The risk is that as what remains passes (if it passes) that it might perforate her intestine.  So, keeping fingers crossed.

Awww, I hope everything turns out okay with her :-(.

(And I swear, I'll read the latest two chapters eventually!)

Thank you. I posted that she's back home and seems to be eating well and doing well but the vet once her back for x rays

*wince, crosses fingers* Oh dear. I'm sorry xP Thinking healthy thoughts in your direction!

Thank you! She's back home now. And eating anything!

xD A good indicator of any pet's health! If my cat's meowing at me, she either wants my lap or thinks her food dish is empty.

Awwwwwww omg so cute!

I hope she's okay. :( We have a black lab, so we've dealt with this before. No common sense sometimes, labs.

Oh, DOGS.

My brother's Chessie ate a big hard red plastic ball a few years back: he ended up having surgery to remove the biggest piece, but he's fine, now, for what it's worth.

She looks darling, btw. Labs are kind of wonderful, really.

Good luck to her! And you!

Thanks! She seems better and yeah, Chessies are eating machines, along with labs.

I hope that she doesn't have any further problems! She looks like such a sweetie!

Oh no! I very much hope that your dog comes out of this healthy and safe - when my dog was hit by a car, I remember how devastated my family was, but he made it through the surgery and was back better than ever after a few months of Cone of Shame healing and nights of yowling to be let out of his cage, and he lived to be very old for his breed. Wishing you and her the best of luck as you deal with this unfortunate situation.

Thank you so much! No cone of shame, and she's home so we are lucky. We'll see what happens next week with more xrays.

Oh, the poor girl! I'd say I hope she learns from this, but Labs don't, so instead I will just hope she gets through this with no bigger trauma than The Cone of Shame.

Once, my Boxer had to be Coned and, unfortunately, she found a way to make herself even more annoying with it. She'd slip the end of the cone between my toes, then twist her head. I knew what was coming and I still shouted in pain, every time.

Sending nice soft indestructible toys her way and hugs yours...

She's a BAD DOG. Also, she's licking the place where the IV was and it's getting all read and sore. GRRRRR

Also: I can't embed this, but have a link -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcAKYpybFfc

Any time I see someone referring to their bitch (in a dog sense, not in a 'I have to punch you' sense), this scene comes to mind.

"This is our driver's seeing eye bitch. She's deranged, but so so playful!"

[identity profile] metonomia.livejournal.com 2011-05-11 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Poor baby!! I hope that the cone of shame is the worst of it, and that all that evil plastic passes without issue.

*hugs and crossed fingers*

Well that just truly sucks - pets can be so idiotic, sometimes. Fingers crossed that all is well.

Yes, very idiotic. Grrrrrr

Oh jesus, I hope that it passes through without any incident. And maybe she'll stop doing it :) *hugs you*

Awww poor baby! All this fuss, and the bumper can't even have been that delicious. I hope it all works out soon, without any surgery or perforation involved.

Going to read the latest chapter on my lunch break, and with great relief after editing horrible horrible tables all morning. Harold and Morgan would probably enjoy rearranging tables of data more than I would.

LOL, so- I have picfics to post. If I ever get around to doing anything that isn't work or sleeping, ever. Somehow it is half The Incredible Adventures of Polly Plummer, and half fic of your writing. If Lewis wanted his canon to feature more strongly he should have provided me with more material, what can I say. Maybe if I put another note in my planner and highlight it, the picfics will get posted.

I NEED pic fic. I've spent the last 3 days working on a power point for MDs. and I have another one to draft. WOE. good luck with your own work woes!

Eurgh, that is not a delight for the eyes. I'll try to get at least one post up today!

Awwww no... I have two standard poodles and they are very dear to me, so I completely get the worry. I hope she's okay and no surgery necessary. Neither of my dogs ever ate anything, but one had a bad reaction to flea medication once – it made him have a seizure and I was in full-on panic mode. NOT FUN.

No fun at all. Thanks for the kind words. She's home, still needs x rays and is licking the sore spot on her leg where the IV went in. but, she seems fine. We hope. Thanks so much!

Oh, what a sweetie! I hope the cone of shame is all that's needed and that everything turns out all right.

(And totally off topic, but I saw this and thought of you, the High King and songbirds...)

LOVE the article! thank you. We have 2 birds' nests on our porch. The baby robins are HUGE and the parents are feeding them round the cluck. the Dove nest is much more sedate.

Thanks so much!
