Three Sentence Ficathon 2022 Part 2

UPDATE 14 FEBRUARY 2022 -- 3SF 2022 IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  Do continue to fill prompts already posted but the 3SF 2022 is now closed.  We'll be back next year in a new comm (If I can get my act together).  Thank you again!

THIS IS THE NEW POST FOR PART 2 OF THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON -- ALL NEW PROMPTS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE
You may continue to fill prompts (but not leave new ones) at the original Post 1 here but please post new prompts here, not there.  And if you're asking, hey is just me, or did this get enormous really fast? Why yes, yes it did.  Last year, it took us ten days before I opened a new post.  This year, it took us about 5.5 days to get there.  So, by all means, go back and fill in Post 1 and post new prompts here!

Also woops, in an indication of how busy I've been with other things, I neglected to post that for a third year in a row the awesome [personal profile] conuly  started a master list of unclaimed prompts and has been updating it as time permits.  Obviously a huge task! Thank you!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

laertes! oh honey. there’s just so much here, in the roles he feels he plays for his family, and the strength he summoned up for his father’s death and he thought he could have for ophelia’s (but supporting her’s what made him strong, and she’s gone).

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-09-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
oh this is aglaya all over, the cold inquisitorial definition of a miracle and her resentment over her miraculous family, personal but also not the point — she has a higher calling, and that calling is to solve the mysteries and miracles like solving the variables out of an equation, and then there’ll be no miracles left. i bet she’d be an excellent witch of truth.

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-09-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
gosh the voice here is pitch-perfect ryukishi, maybe a little more elegant but it has the same sort of twisting and elaborating on ideas, the systems layered and complex yet really quite simple. it has the tone of an endless witch giving a lecture on magic, with a little bit of an adult cheering a child with a story in ‘she gets a title as special as she is.’ but i repeat myself.

!! you gave me such a beautiful fill, and there's so much here, so many relationships folded into one human! it's a human who needs shannon and kanon (and beatrice), and kanon needs shannon to be the optimism he's never quite been able to reach, but in the end shannon needs him, too. no one else would be able to maintain the fiction of her existence and death using the truth of her choice to wear george's ring.

eee thank you! you got it, exactly — it was sort of a challenge for myself to see if i could write about that human, never naming them but naming those parts of them, those relationships folded in them, and why they need each other, and! ‘no one else would be able to maintain the fiction of her existence and death using the truth of her choice to wear george's ring’! yeah! yeah. gosh i love them.

[personal profile] ernest 2022-09-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
i don't know the fandom, but you can feel so much of the history between these two characters just in how they face each other down, and the things they leave unsaid. i just love the spaces in between -- grief and rage, mad and desperate, tears and stone -- and how it all breaks down anyway when he's alone. this is excellent!

They have SO MUCH LOVE FOR EACH OTHER. Even in canon! Of course my job as a fanfic writer is to make it worse :)

(and then better. eventually.)

The fandom is a series of mystery/fantasy novels set in the Aztec empire! They're very good books if you like ANGST and FEELINGS and a nice little dash of cosmic horror.

Re: Umineko, Shannon, spoilers for episode seven

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-09-15 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
i love episode seven (you know this about me) and i love how much ... understanding and empathy it shows for that thought process where you know, you know, you know what the truth of the situation you're in is, but the stories you tell yourself are so strong and you need the story to keep going. and you have that same understanding and empathy in your fic, and it really comes through -- she knows she made battler a symbol, she knows the letters weren't a test, she's as smart and aware as any other person, but she has a broken heart (because battler took away one half of it) and she needs something to make it whole. i also just love how you developed out the idea of how it takes two people to create a world, and all the different dualities inside her, and 'there’s only so long she can keep splitting herself into the friend and the befriended; instead she splits herself into someone who can love Battler in her place, and someone who can live her daily life and find out who she can be without him' yes that's beautiful.

gertrude! aaah i love this characterization of her (and i can tell, too, which gertrude it is) and the sort of meditation on what it means to be a queen and to hold that responsibility and to be in the public eye. and that final moment, too, watching herself and wincing, is so well-sketched, and you can see a glimpse of how claudius is good for her in her grief (even if he caused it) and can draw her away from the spiraling self-judgment of always looking at herself through the lens of public perception.

Round About (Sherlock Holmes)

[personal profile] woodmr 2022-09-17 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)

“This code is more baffling than the dancing men Holmes, what can it all mean?”

“Read simply, very little. But the unusual frequency of the words ‘noon,’ ‘civic,’ and ‘Eve’ are suggestive: removing these and any other palindromes may reveal what our mysterious messenger wishes to keep hidden.”

Re: Umineko, Shannon, spoilers for episode seven

[personal profile] ernest 2022-09-19 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
yeah! that's what episode seven really is about, the stories you need to keep going even when believing them may hurt in the long run; and it's also about revealing the truth of the situation to the people watching, while keeping the important parts of the lie intact. i really did love developing the different dualities she has inside her, and how that would feel to be the friend to be looked up to. thank you!

'the systems layered and complex yet really quite simple' yep that's him, that's ryukishi! goodness, what a compliment, though. heee, you do repeat yourself, i love all the lectures on magic in this game, and i also love revisiting them once you've understood what that magic really is.
ernest: (What disadvantage?)

[personal profile] ernest 2022-09-19 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
hee, thank you! i love how the almeida production engages with the celebrity of modern leadership, and of the living characters gertrude's been living under the spotlight longer and more directly than anyone else, which makes her composed and at ease with responsibility most of the time. claudius really is good for her, and they care so much about each other, even with all the complications involved.

Noisome (Frederick Wentworth, Persuasion)

[personal profile] woodmr 2022-09-23 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)

A ship’s officer should learn to yell over the roughest sea and quiet his tongue when becalmed. Yet with his cabin’s porthole open to catch any breeze that stirred, Wentworth was made fully aware that the middy on watch had yet to master this skill.

He barely moved his own lips to curse the hour as he rose, stepped into his boots, and took to the bridge before any of the men determined to teach a lesson of their own.

Re: let me wipe it first; it smells of mortality (Umineko, Beatrice, Spoilers for Episode Three)

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-09-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh once again i think i see the flicker of an utena reference in your umineko fic, and this one is more indirect because it's an image instead of a phrase but the 'uninhabited dress' is such a vivid image, and battler shutting his eyes to see it is such a character note. and the question he asks! is a good question! this whole thing is just so beautifully written and layered, and also don't think i missed the reference in the title, either.

A Cut Above (Elizabeth Elliot, Persuasion)

[personal profile] woodmr 2022-09-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)

It was provoking for Penelope to run off in such a shameless manner. It was positively ridiculous for Anne to become the talk of Bath so soon after.

Well, Elizabeth and her father would make their appearance at church, but she for one was not going to endure a wedding breakfast with that motley rabble, nor care what their opinions might be.

Re: Hamlet

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-10-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
ah hamlet! there's a cynicism that shows in the way he thinks about the world, he 'knows people only care about each other insofar as it will benefit themselves,' and he presses on what he sees as other people's selfishness and vanity, but then there's this beautiful ... idealism and nobility in how he thinks about the actors, and what they're capable of, iamb by iamb.

Re: Hamlet, Claudius, major character death

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-10-07 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
ooh i love the way you use the seasons, the way the equinoxes echo claudius's rise and fall, and the way it makes it feel ... natural, inevitable, with a tragic inevitability. seasons change, and things can't keep looking up for claudius forever. but the darkness at the end still hits, and the tragedy of it hits, too.

Re: Merrily We Roll Along, Frank/Beth

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-10-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
'it's the whole damn show' still fucks so hard. it's the way the images and the sentences leading up to it tumble together, one memory into another, and the last set of clauses is a sudden stop that gets to the point of everything before it.

Re: Friends at the Table (Marielda), Maelgwyn & Samothes

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-10-07 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
oh, this is such a good, close, almost claustrophobic look at that moment with maelgwyn and what he was seeing and what he was feeling. and 'the Blade in the Dark strikes the sun and as Ingenuity Alive is eclipsed by Confidence Breathing' has such a mythic feel, followed by the personal, emotional reality of 'Maelgwyn knows sure as he’s ever known anything that he’s done the wrong thing and can’t ever take it back' and the visceral image of the hammer. 'in time with his loss' is such a beautiful sorrowful phrase, too.

Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu

[personal profile] quillsshadow 2022-10-07 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Luo Binghe's eyes shine like dewdrops, soft and harmless and pretty. Shen Qingqiu throws him into the abyss, knowing that those eyes will never be so soft for him again.

He does not recognise the fire that replaces the dew; not till it's (almost) too late.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Tsuna

[personal profile] quillsshadow 2022-10-07 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sawada Tsunayoshi is small and pitiful and weak, far too worthless to ever have a second form.

Or so everyone tells him. But Tsuna remembers, even years later, how it felt to turn to blazing fire for that precious moment and reshape himself as a lioncub - and how it felt to have those flames torn from his grasp (with his father's agreement) and smothered too deep for him to reach them.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Gokudera

[personal profile] quillsshadow 2022-10-07 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Gokudera Hayato knows that he could be worth something, if. If he got a chance, the right people, the right action, the right something.

He could never have imagined that the 'right' thing would be screwing up his special move and needing to be rescued, but as he turns to red flames and then to a leopard under the steady warmth of Sky flames from the boy he's failed to kill, he can't imagine anything more perfect.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Takeshi

[personal profile] quillsshadow 2022-10-07 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Takeshi smiles and calls the Mafia a fun game, smiles and studies swordplay with the fervour he used to apply to baseball, smiles and smiles and smiles. A moment of being blue flames and then he's a dog, which is cool! His smiles have much more obvious fangs now, and it's hilarious that no one notices them.
