Three Sentence Ficathon 2021

We have now opened a new post, for new prompts! Please leave all new prompts there. You may continue to fill existing prompts here. If you didn't get a prompt filled here, feel free to post it on the new post!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.
Conuly does this just because they are an awesome person but should you want to write them fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Rogue One, Jyn/Cassian

[personal profile] kaminagi 2021-02-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Through his scope, he watches Jyn lay waste to an entire squad of stormtroopers, as brutal and beautiful as she had on Jedha the first time he saw her fight.

As awe-inspiring as she is to watch each time, Cassian is alert enough to ensure no far reaching combatants interrupt her performance.

"How appropriately heroic of you," she tells him, and he knows that she trusts him like no one else to watch her back.

“I thought you’d be a good influence on him, Carter,” Phillips growled.

“I was!” Peggy protested. “If it wasn’t for me he’d have forgotten the explosives.”

Hee! She's not wrong. :)

Obsidian & Blood, Acatl & Teomitl

[personal profile] notapaladin 2021-02-07 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, Teomitl thinks about the man he might have become if he'd never met Acatl--proud to the point of arrogance, bravery turned to recklessness, no fit inheritor to even be considered for the throne--and he has to shudder in horror. One look at Tizoc (at his brother, gods, the thought sickens him now that they came from the same parents), at his excesses and paranoia, reminds him how close he could have come to falling.

"You were the greatest teacher I could have ever had," he tells Acatl, and means it with all his heart.

Pride & Prejudice - An Ideal Wife - (Darcy/Elizabeth)

[personal profile] ultra_fic 2021-02-07 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, as he watches her moving about the room - ensuring the guests are taken care of, that Georgiana is not hiding in corners alone, that nothing shall ever shame Pemberley in the eyes of their acquaintance - he still wonders at how he ever managed without her.

Unsociable and unyielding as he was wont to be, it is a wonder to Mr Darcy that he ever hosted a successful gathering, and stranger still that he coped alone in raising his dear sister from her childhood years to womanhood without incident.

All has been improved by the presence of his dearest, loveliest Elizabeth, something he hopes he makes clear to her with each passing day, and realises it is true when she smiles at him, exactly as she is smiling now.

Really? That's cool :) I saw P&P on [personal profile] undeadrobins list of favourites and I figured it would just work with the prompt *shrugs* There can never be too much P&P in the world :)

[Miraculous Ladybug] no little white lie

[personal profile] alexseanchai 2021-07-14 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
written after "Rocketear"

Chat Blanc is a simple cat with simple desires.

Find Ladybug. Learn what she's hiding. Make her understand the pain she caused.

It seems so straightforward when he puts it like that. Uncomplicated and without any unwanted consequences.

He knows precisely when Ladybug catches sight of him, because that's the moment he watches her heart shatter.

She doesn't try to fight him, only to defend herself, and that only physically. Chat Blanc is barely aware of what he says to her. She told someone else her identity; betrayal! Other superheroes have known each other's identities, and she knew that, and she let Rena Rouge keep being a hero until——and Carapace still is a hero, rushing to her side even now—betrayal!

"You don't trust me!" Chat Blanc shouts. "I thought I found one person who trusts me—I won't help you if you don't trust me!"

Ladybug dives away from a staff strike and stops, on one knee on the pavement in the middle of the intersection by the bakery, panting for breath. She doesn't try to rise.

"Fine," she says, a word that rings with finality. She lifts her head. "Fine. Do whatever you think best."

Take her Miraculous!

Chat Blanc doesn't answer him. He summons a flicker of destructive power, enough maybe to hurt her body enough that she understands how she hurt his heart, enough to make sure no hands he trusts less than hers ever touch her Miraculous. She stifles a gasp at the sight of it; tears sparkle on her cheeks in the light of it.

"Go on," Ladybug says. "Take my Miraculous, if that's what you want. Destroy it or me, if that's what you want. Make me hurt how I hurt you, if that's what you want."

"Shellter!" Carapace shouts. It's meant to keep Chat Blanc inside, he knows, and he doesn't care—he's so much more powerful than Chat Noir ever was, and Chat Noir could have brought down Shellter easily—he's not trapped at all, no matter what Carapace—

It's also meant to keep Ladybug outside. She was meters away. Now she's thrown herself at his feet, inside the dome with him.

"Ask my name," Ladybug says, sobbing against his hip. "Ask for a kiss. Ask how I feel about you, fuck, ask me to fall in love with you—Gods all know keeping all that to myself hasn't done a fucking thing to protect you—"

Tell me her name!

Chat Blanc drops to his knees, too, catching her under one shoulder so she stays upright. Being so much above her—in a way he can't make short jokes about that'll end with her bopping him on the head—he's not supposed to be above her. "Protect me from what?" he asks.

"This." Ladybug spreads one hand over the white leather on his chest, over his heart. "This is—this is exactly what I was afraid of."

You are so close! Why are you hesitating?

"You know," Ladybug says, hiccuping a laugh between sobs, "I bet with a big enough blast, you'll get Shadowmoth and Mayura, too."

"And Carapace," Chat Blanc observes. "And Marinette, if she's home. Probably also if she's not. And—" He doesn't want to see who else might be close enough he'd have to watch them die, if he did this. If he did this to her.

—Why is she saying he should do this?

What are you waiting for?

"What are you waiting for?" Chat Blanc repeats. His akuma is in her reach. Why isn't she reaching for it?

Ladybug shrugs the shoulder he's not holding her up by. "If I try to defeat you without your cooperation," she says, flat the way he feels when all he had strength left to do is fall in bed and now he's fallen, "either we lose or I lose you. Either way, I'm done."

No. No.

"And I don't think our team can beat you at all," Ladybug says. "Especially if I try to help you do what you want, get what you want, instead of helping our team stop you."

Their team might just be Carapace, at the moment. Chat Blanc doesn't think about what role anyone but Ladybug might be able to play in gathering teammates. She's right, though: a cooperative effort from enough of their team would probably bring down Chat Noir, yes, but that's not who he is right now.

"I want to love someone who trusts me," Chat Blanc whispers. The other half—I want to trust someone who loves me—sits heavy on his tongue. His father, Ladybug—he won't even think the third name, though he can't help but picture how she looks in pink and gray.

I trust you to do as I say. Bring me the Miraculouses and I will love you like my own son.

He has enough parents who treat love like a business contract, thanks.

"I trust you," Ladybug murmurs.

Chat Blanc nods. "Lucky Charm," he says.

"Lucky Charm," Ladybug repeats.

He closes his eyes: whatever advantage the Charm gives her, he doesn't want to share it. He closes his hand: whatever harm he could do her, he doesn't want to risk it. He closes his heart—

Something bounces off his head. "No more evil-doing for you, little akuma," says Ladybug, voice shaking.

Chat Noir opens his eyes in time to watch the white butterfly flying away.

"I'm sorry," Ladybug says, voice unsteady, her hand trembling as she draws an akuma-shield charm from her yo-yo. "I'm sorry. I thought—" She stops, eyeing the silver-spotted white charm. "But if you keep this, it's safe to tell you!" She starts giggling, helplessly, breathlessly. "I can tell you everything!"

"Everything, huh," Alya says. Chat Noir jerks, overbalances, and falls over, taking Ladybug down with him. The Shellter dissolves, unneeded; Carapace, probably pretending for somebody or other's sake he doesn't know Alya, hangs back. "Here," Alya adds, "you're on top of the Lucky Charm, let me—" Alya picks up the small hard object as Chat pushes himself back up. "Huh, this looks like the one—"

"Shut—" Ladybug starts hiccuping. "Shut—shut up, Alya!"

What it looks like is the central bead of Adrien's Marinette lucky charm. But he's not going to say that aloud. He's going to pass it back to Ladybug, who is not Marinette, because there is no possible way he is that lucky. It must mean something else.

"He's not interested anyway," Ladybug tells Alya, like it's something she's reminding Alya of. "Don't get my hopes up." Alya looks like she very much wants to say something and won't. "Miraculous Ladybug! Anyway," Ladybug tells Chat, "I know I fell in love with you twice already. The first time was a speedrun, even." She glances away, blushing. "A third time shouldn't be hard, right?"

"…Take it easy on my heart rate," Chat begs. It's skyrocketed. Ladybug half smiles, pressing just a little on his chest where (he abruptly realizes) her hand hasn't left his heart.
