Three Sentence Ficathon 2021

We have now opened a new post, for new prompts! Please leave all new prompts there. You may continue to fill existing prompts here. If you didn't get a prompt filled here, feel free to post it on the new post!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.
Conuly does this just because they are an awesome person but should you want to write them fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Fill: the torch passes on (Pokémon game series, meta)

[personal profile] eagleoftheninth 2021-01-31 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In the beginning, Red wouldn't have imagined that they'd last so long.

Video games are such transient things, after all. Technology improves so fast—what was state of the art soon becomes hopelessly outdated. And since so much work goes into making them, their manufacturers often tend to caution. If they aren't sure a game will sell, they'd rather not invest in making it—and surely the same formula over and over would grow stale eventually?

But it hasn't yet. For here Red is in 2019, and players across the globe are frothing with excitement for Sword and Shield, for the latest expansion to Red's universe. Children who'd not be counted old enough for the journey, adults who Red himself was first to meet, all of them waiting agog for every new titbit of information—a new species to catch, a new location to visit, a new Leader to fight.

Twenty-three years of Red's world growing larger and brighter and more intricate. It is thanks to many people, of course—but most of all, he thinks, it is because of his creator and sometimes-namesake, the man who began it all.

Perhaps he's a little biased. But it's hard not to be grateful to the very first person who put heart and soul into bringing you and your world to life. The first person to dream that that world might exist, and to move to make it real.

The new little ones are just as excited as the player-folk, if not more, impatient for beginnings. With the release date tomorrow, they're practically climbing the walls, unable to sit still. But there are traditions to be upheld, and they pay attention right away when Red tells them to.

(He has always been comfortable as one of the most silent of silent protagonists, but one advantage of that is that when you do speak, people listen.)

"Tomorrow, your journey begins. Dreams and adventures await you, and so does the joy and love of the player-folk. But before you begin, I have a story to tell you. This is how the world of Pokémon began.

"There was once a man who spent the best days of his childhood in the forest, catching bugs..."

Aww, that got me in the feels. I am not always happy about the pokemon series trajectory, but this really sums up why the franchise still has heart.

Artemis Fowl

[personal profile] wingedflight 2021-01-31 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
For a minute, the only thing Artemis Fowl can do is stare. The boy is... just a boy: soft eyes, friendly smile, ill-fitting suit--essentially an embarrassment from beginning to end.

"Foaly," he says carefully, "how did "rehabilitate your reputation by making you sympathetic to the audience" turn into... whatever that is?"

Oh, Artemis, I feel ya :(

[personal profile] word_devourer 2021-02-01 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Well you see, it's actually very reasonable and intelli-" manages Foaly before the grin he's been restraining breaks out into feverish, uncontrollable laughter, which, as he runs out of breath, rapidly devolves into altogether-too-pleased-with-himself wheezing.

Artemis has had his arms crossed for some 20 seconds before Foaly finally gathers himself well enough to manage, "I think I've done you a favor here, you know that? It's not like anyone ever going to expect you to actually be dangerous after this."

Phryne Fisher & Su Wenli (from Miss S, Chinese adaptation of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries)

[identity profile] ruanchunxian0.livejournal.com 2021-02-01 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The Australian lady found her way to the body by the bund just fifteen minutes after Wenli – a remarkable feat considering she had to navigate an unfamiliar city alone – and a full half hour before Officer Shen’s car carrying Inspector Luo Qiuheng screeched to a stop at the scene to Wenli’s disapproving cluck. Thirty minutes was enough for Wenli and Phryne to discover that they had French as a language in common in addition to Mandarin, and for their combined genius to come to the conclusion that, though the gentleman impeccably dressed in the western suit was soaked to the skin, he was definitely killed elsewhere then dragged to this famously busy river bank: someone wanted him found and become the spectacle of Shanghai.

“Well, then, since I seem to find myself short of my inspector,” Phryne said, “what say you to solving this together?”

Subreality (we keep Kielle's idea in our hearts)

[personal profile] silveradept 2021-02-02 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
The first trip to Subreality is always the weirdest. It usually takes time (and, if you can, some heavy drinking) to get used to seeing so many different versions of yourself, but after the initial shock wears off, the planning begins. So if you've ever wondered why a completely different version of the character just popped up in your head or your work, it's someone in Subreality playing a joke on you.

Into the Spider-Verse/Marvel Comics, Doctors Octopii

[personal profile] superflight 2021-02-02 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"You can't really have gone native," Olivia Octavius said with a bright, disbelieving smile, "Just because you're in Peter Parker's body..." Her hands pressed together, and the arms on her back wound in the air with lazy readiness. "How did you manage that, by the way?"

His spider-sense was screaming at him, which was possibly the most unsettling thing that could be happening while meeting another universe's version of himself. She should be no threat to him. He should not be unsettled by her. But Peter Parker, Elliot Tolliver, Otto Octavius's stomach churned; he tried not to let his own metal arms writhe. Would he be the more skilled with them if it came to that, would he prove superior? Or would she?

"It's... a long story."

"Oh, I think we both have time."

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Power Rangers (2017)

[personal profile] tiny_ninja 2021-02-03 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Jason's palms sweat, and he wipes them on his jeans, connected to this man like they're same the person, but not at the same time, because Jason has made more mistakes than this perfect person could ever have. The man stops, looks over, and time stands still, brown eyes meeting blue, recognizing the power that connects them, binds them, to the Morphing Grid.

"Hey," Jason Lee Scott says, nodding to him, "I've been waiting for you."

And Then There Were None, Lombard/Marston

[personal profile] ernest 2021-02-04 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
“Oh, I’m Irish now,” Lombard says with cheeky delight, “then you must know the—”

“Don’t start,” snaps Lombard, who’s gotten enough of that from pretty boy Marston and has no intention of listening to this kind of generalization from a self who didn’t even mind leaving all those men to die because that’s what natives are good at, dying.

“Alright, alright, don’t get in a sweat,” he answers, already bored of this, and paying more attention to the Nordic God flirting shamelessly with himself, and wondering how he can get invited in on the fun.

lol this is excellent. miniseries lombard's so judgy with himself, and honestly he's right, book lombard is a dick, but he is also a dick. and the marstons are flirting with each other, of course they are. good luck to book lombard getting in on that.

Re: And Then There Were None, Lombard/Marston

[personal profile] ernest 2021-02-04 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
hee, thank you! and of course miniseries would never say he's not a dick, he's even more aware of how awful they both are and he's waiting for it to catch up to him, but he's also willing to be judgmental of hypocritical people who let it happen; "i am not the only white killer in africa" was such a good added character note!

and the marstons have to flirt with each other, he's basically "☐ Not only would I have sex with my clone, I'd probably make a bunch of clones and just get it on with all of them at once because that's how pro clone-fucking I am." (which means that book lombard has a pretty good chance of getting in on it, good for them)
