Three Sentence Ficathon 2021

We have now opened a new post, for new prompts! Please leave all new prompts there. You may continue to fill existing prompts here. If you didn't get a prompt filled here, feel free to post it on the new post!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.
Conuly does this just because they are an awesome person but should you want to write them fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

"We're stuck for the time being." Harlock swiped the rain out of his hair. "We can't return to the Arcadia until the storm's passed."

Yama did not seem to be listening to him; his head was tipped back as he watched the rain pouring down—fat drops dripping off the thick green leaves of the canopy above them, the air so thick with the warmth and humidity that it was like breathing through a pillow—and his face was filled with wonder.

Harlock smiled to himself—how had he forgotten that Yama had so rarely seen rain like this?—and settled beside him to wait out the storm.

Yes, my plot to get you to write more fills is working!!

I love her vow to end Palps (and I notice it's him she vows to end, not Vader!), and of course Qui-Gon's potential for sexy-time ruination is always amusing. The way you write them is fantastic, two rough-edged people sharpening each other rather than smoothing anything down.

What, the old "lie back and think of England Narnia" method or something along the lines of the quintessential turkey baster method? Cause, like, maybe none of them can stand the thought of 1) hetero sex or 2) adultery. (I mean, it would be, like, pre-approved adultery, but not everyone is a swinger.)

Also, I really don't want to think too hard about penguin impregnation scenarios, but I'm sure someone figured out some way for everyone to be happy. But, really, adoption is a thing! I mean, irl, that's what one zoo did for a gay mated pair--gave them an egg. Had it's own children book and everything.

Supergirl, Red Daughter/OC, discovering you're soulmates with someone who wasn't supposed to have a soul
(I just want my sad clone daughter to be happy.)

Stunned at having her Words spoken, Liz (better known to some as The Female Lab Tech) looks back and forth from her throbbing wrist and its innocuous, ordinary phrase ("it did not work?") to--to this--this god, this alien, this clone of goddamn Supergirl who was supposed to die three seconds ago--and suddenly the still-dispersing crackles of energy in the lab and even the failure of their experiment
seem unimportant, trivial, as Liz utters what she's sure, in hindsight, is the dumbest Soulmate Sentence ever spoken: "Wow, you, uh--w-what's your, uh, your name?"

The woman blinks (nailed it) as if no one has ever asked for her name before (wait, have they?), and frowns down at her own long sleeve, brow crinkling like she's never heard of a Soulmate Mark before (wait, has she?!)--or maybe like she never imagined having one of her own, never imagined the Words being hers, never considered the possibility of her own soul, independent of Supergirl's--and she says, hesitating: "I do not have one... yet?"

There's an uptick to it that is definitely hopeful, and as Supergirl looks between them with wide eyes, understanding slowly dawning--and as she does not stop grinning, even when Agent Danvers punches her in the shoulder--Liz realizes that she has never been so happy to have complicated things for their resident superhero.

Orchestral Maneuvers (Doctor Who, River Song/Twelfth Doctor)

[personal profile] topaz_eyes 2021-02-03 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
The Darillian mineral sunbursts the Doctor had ordered were starting to fade as he sat at their table waiting for River to arrive.

River seemed to be taking a very long time getting ready for their dinner date, he thought after half an hour had elapsed. Until he heard a commotion two tables away, and a loud “Excuse me.” Seconds later, she tapped him on the shoulder from behind.

“So this is where you’ve been hiding!” she announced far too brightly.

“I’ve been waiting--” the Doctor began, but River bent down and laid her finger against his lips to shush him.

“Come dance with me, my love,” she purred in his ear, her assessing gaze sweeping around the room. “I’ve requested our song.”

The Doctor gestured at the two round crystal goblets on the table whose sparks were dulling to embers. “Why don’t we enjoy the remainder of these sunbursts first.”

“Dance with me,” River repeated firmly, “I insist.”

The Doctor cocked an eyebrow. “Right this minute? What’s the rush?”

“It’s our song, sweetie,” she insisted through a tight smile, “to celebrate our anniversary. We can’t miss our special request now, can we?”

Before the Doctor could reply, she grabbed his hand, pulled him to standing, and dragged him onto the darkened dancefloor among the throng of couples gliding back and forth.

“Really, Doctor, you can be so thick sometimes,” River admonished him, and she laced her fingers at the nape of the Doctor’s neck. The Doctor obediently wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in; they began to sway to the hotel orchestra’s rendition of Moonlight Serenade.

A minute into the song, River’s cheek moved oddly against his shoulder as if she were probing a back molar. The next thing he knew, she drew him down and kissed him, insistently prying his lips open with her tongue.

“Mmmph?” Wide-eyed, the Doctor could only follow her lead, drop his resistance and allow her in. He arched her against him, moulding her body to his, his eyes fluttering closed as his tongue twined around hers.

He was starting to get caught up in the moment when she pushed a small capsule into his mouth, behind his lower left wisdom tooth. She then pulled back and smiled ruefully. “I’m sorry, but I really must be going,” she said, “something’s come up.”

The Doctor frowned at her, his stomach sinking as he realized what was happening. “What’s going on, River?” he asked with a resigned sigh. Never mind that they had just spent the last hour in Darillian time – two years – extricating themselves from their last caper, and he was starving.

River tilted her head in the direction of a very large and purple-faced gentleman who stood at the edge of the dance floor and gesticulated angrily around the room, obviously searching for someone. “I’ll explain later. He hasn’t seen me yet. In the meantime, be a dear and keep my former colleague occupied while I fetch a vortex manipulator and a Time Agent to deal with him. One’s stationed on the other side of the planet.”

The Doctor’s jaw dropped. “When did you work for--?”

“Whatever happens, do not let him know you have a data crystal with proof of his unauthorized manipulation of history on Xalpax Seven. I need to borrow the TARDIS, I’ll be back as soon as I can.” She kissed his cheek and slipped through the crowd on the floor towards the back exit, leaving the Doctor to stare at her retreating back. Immediately his tongue swept to the back of his lower left gum where the crystal had lodged. Of course. She was an archaeologist…

“Right,” he said, and began to formulate yet another escape plan.

Eyes closed in an attempt to stave off a heart-attack (or maybe just wimpy tears), Gideon therefore wasn't expecting the feather-light kiss that Harrow placed to her stomach. She twitched up into the gentleness, gasping, and--fuck it--her eyes flew open to watch as Harrow followed with her tongue, licking experimentally at Gideon's abs, and then the crease of her inner thigh; easing Gideon's boxers down so fucking slowly; examining each and every new inch of skin she laid bare, then testing it like Gideon's body was a puzzle to solve; unraveling Gideon as thoroughly as she'd unraveled the Lyctor theorems; laying waste to her as surely as she had their cruel and unloving God--but, as ever, as always, with the intention of making her whole again afterward.

The weight of Harrow's full attention was a heavy thing indeed, and Gideon had been a fool to think she could withstand it: she never expected it to feel quite so much like love.

There's so much to love here! Where do I even begin? The comeraderie between the three of them - the quick, intense characterization - Kefka and Kuja expounding on magic theory together for a clueless Sephiroth - I love it when the different FF villains get to bounce off each other because they're so different and you've really made them shine!
