Three Sentence Ficathon 2021

We have now opened a new post, for new prompts! Please leave all new prompts there. You may continue to fill existing prompts here. If you didn't get a prompt filled here, feel free to post it on the new post!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.
Conuly does this just because they are an awesome person but should you want to write them fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

I can really see it as a missing scene in canon, and I love the idea of Ginny and Neville practicing sword fighting just in case.

Their last conversation is not much of a conversation. Just before C3-PO starts telling the chief of the locals how they ended up on their planet, Luke tells Han that he'll be leaving soon, something about destiny.

Han doesn't pay attention to the explanation, he just stairs in disbelief at the man who has become his best friend.

Luke looks like he wants to say more, but only adds: "Take care of yourself. Take care of her." Before turning and walking away.

A Life Lost (Chronicles of Narnia; Susan & Peter)

[personal profile] kalira 2021-02-05 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
"It was a beautiful life, and I am thankful, even if I will-" Peter's voice shook, and Susan felt a little more ice creep down her spine, "will never return, never. . ."

"Then I am happy for you and your courage in that conviction." Susan said softly, and Peter tensed, jaw clenching.

"I haven't forgotten that tone of yours, you know." Peter said sharply, and Susan's lips pursed. "You-"

"I can hardly claim to be grateful for having my life torn away," Susan said, voice hard, "and being thrust into one that I had long learned to abandon."

Unstoppable (Naruto; Sasuke/Naruto/Sakura)

[personal profile] kalira 2021-02-05 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
"We've always been too stubborn to do anything else." Sakura said wryly, the fingers of one hand curled into Naruto's shaggy sunshine hair, the other splaying as Sasuke's own threaded between them.

"Or too stupid." Sasuke added dryly, flicking a glance at Naruto, who stuck out his tongue.

"And who hauled your stupid butt back to sense and back home?" Naruto asked, reaching across Sakura to poke at Sasuke and provoking a soft hiss before Sakura tugged at them both, redirecting their attention - they weren't quite out of this mess yet.

Helping Hand (Naruto; Sakura & Kakashi)

[personal profile] kalira 2021-02-05 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sakura bit her lip, flinching as she tugged the brush through her hair; it was ridiculous, she thought, that the sting of pulling at the knots bothered her so when her broken wrist was throbbing in its cast.

A soft touch on her hand made her jump, and she looked up, fingers loosening on her brush only to have it plucked from her grip with a gentle squeeze to her shoulder.

"Let me help." Kakashi said, settling down behind her, and Sakura tensed, wincing, only to be surprised as he separated her hair and gripped it above the brush, working it through easily - and without the eye-watering smarting she'd inflicted on herself.

“That turtle thing said it’s the end of the world,” drawled Ringo Stork (who had always hated that nickname, it wasn’t his fault his neck stuck straight up instead of curving back like it was supposed to, he had a spinal condition!).
“Think we oughtta split?” worried Maul McCartney, shuffling along the branch, “or keep calm and carrion?”
“Now don’t start that again!” the rest of the flock chorused; Ringo Stork’s wings mantled in irritation, but he subsided with a grumble — puns always made him peckish, and that mammoth down there was looking peaky, which meant things were looking up.

“Shields are based on Protego, holograms are talking portraits, Tribbles are pygmy puffs, Pon Farr is a love potion, Transporters are Apparition — obviously — and the Borg are Inferi,” Draco ticked them off on his fingers. “I’ll grant you that Muggles have their own portable communication devices, but you must admit that everything truly clever must have originated with a wizard writer.” He smirked, ready to deliver the killing blow: “And the redshirts who die every away mission? Gryffindors, of course.”

(CW for violence and implied gore, nothing too heavy but just to be safe)

All her life, Eve had followed the rules. Don't steal, don't hurt other people, don't stare at them for too long. It had been harder during childhood, instincts untamed and a startling lack of impulse control causing the words 'behavioral problems' to be a constant in her parent's household.

The problem was that Eve never felt those rules like others did. She could hide the worst of it, though. She masked her perpetual glaring as just people watching, the desire to make things bleed could be contained to herself, and the need to hunt, that one she channeled into her obsession with female killers. After all, what greater challenge, than to hunt hunters?

But as she watched the monster cut through the wailing man at her feet, Eve understood.

The muzzle of the creature dripped blood down her neck and chest, staining timber-colored fur red. She was easily three meters tall, a wall of muscle and fang and claw that should make Eve run, and run fast.

Hazel eyes, completely inhuman, kept Eve stuck right where she was. There were pieces of... stuff everywhere. The copper smell of blood and the unique scent of fresh meat should make her stomach turn, and yet, there was nothing else in Eve's mind but the wolf.

She stepped closer to Eve, and with each step, she changed. When she was close enough for Eve to touch, there was only a woman standing before her. Naked as a newborn, and awash in blood. A terrifying sight, to anyone sane.

But when the woman smiled a bloody grin, Eve found herself smiling back.

"You really expect me to believe that out of everyone here, you're the one who's best suited to this?" she says, though, truth be told, his hands are as steady with the needle as they are at the helm.

"What, you want to trust the kid who's never had to bandage worse than a scrape, or do want Chewie to stop pinning down the guy who, let's be clear here, you missed, long enough to patch you up?" he says, studiously failing to mention the fact that she hit the first two and only 'missed' the last one's chest because his blaster was in the way.

They can hear each other's silence, just as loud as they can hear their own, and, while they're both quick on the trigger of a blaster, neither of them is quite so willing to shoot first when it comes to words.

There were things that came with being a princess of Alderaan; one of them was that Leia never owned anything that came second-hand. Her parents, her clothes, her jewels (with the exception of the centuries-old ring-broach her mother gave her on her 18th birthday, and which had been safely stored in the family vault), her shuttlecraft, were all hers first -- even her tutor had been a freshly-minted graduate of the Teacher's College in Mountgreen.

So learning to be a Jedi second-hand by way of Luke parroting (or garbling) Yoda's ludicrous philosophy of non-attachment -- and then to have the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi kibbitzing from the sidelines and yet not providing anything of much value that Leia could detect (and why hadn't her father warned her that his dear friend was so sarcastic anyway?) -- well, Leia would have given a great deal to go right to the source, as it were.

... but that, of course, was the problem, wasn't it? Damn Palpatine, anyway. And Leia would pick herself back up out of the mud, grit her teeth, and try again.

Calliope was a muse, yes, but calling her one of eight was frankly an insult.

"Mr. Hermes, I go wherever the wind blows," she said, her wild lashes fluttering, but, well, a messenger like himself never minded a bit of trouble.

And Calliope, well, life was never boring with her around; she went wherever trouble went, that was true, but wherever she went, victory went, too -- and Mr. Hermes always thought himself quite lucky.

--

Mr. Hermes couldn't help but see Calliope in her boy; bot just the gifted voice and divine strumming, mind. There was the kindness unique to them, too, a special light in the eyes that fundamentally believed the world was a better place than it was, and Mr. Hermes had lived long enough to know that hope was the rarest of all things.

Orpheus wasn't his boy, not by blood -- Calliope had a lot of friends, and so did Mr. Hermes, too, for that matter -- but sitting together, there was only one word for what they were, and that was family.

--

When the world fell out of tune, Miss Calliope did too, without warning -- one day he woke and turned his head, and she was gone, and Orpheus was not. She disappeared, and Mr. Hermes supposed his luck must have lost the roll of the dice; didn't matter that Hermes constantly looked back for her, or that Orpheus' gaze always followed his own - gone, just gone, was Calliope.

Looking at her son when he turned around, the horror on his face when he realized he doomed his love -- well, Mr. Hermes wished, in that moment, that Orpheus didn't take after him so damn much.

The places that taught her twin don’t speak to her; Tatooine’s winds whisper of dry heat and longing, but not of home, and the mist-wreathed cave on Dagobah is only a cave, though she knows she brings her own darkness with her. Luke found his way, and she needs to find her own. But in the emptiness between worlds – where a world was once, and now only the Falcon drifts among debris – she hears the grief of ghosts, their hollow rage so much like her own; in the darkness where no home remains, she sets her new-built saber aside, and with empty hands she gathers them in, holds them close, and lets them go.
