Not fine but safe

None of us was downtown today.  Secret Service had closed a lot of buildings starting Tuesday.  I've been so exclusively remote since March I moved out of my office. 


The trade association representing 14,000 small and midsized manufacturers and factory owners, the National Association of Maufacturers, called on the Vice President and Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Yeah, I agree. It's not going to happen. There was a lot of early what? huh? about the deployment of the National Guard. I've not had the spoons to track down what that looks like in DC but word was first that Pelosi and Mayor Bowser asked the Pentagon for deployment (though I'd seen pics that there were some Guardsmen already deployed). The Pentagon denied the request -- apparently because Trump refused. But there were also reports that DOD didn't want to deploy because they were worried what would happen if the madman gave certain orders. A couple of things happened after -- MD and VA governors agreed to send their people people in, FBI and DC Metro Police were deployed to the Capitol. Then there was this odd statement that acting Sec Def, VP Pence and some others agreed to deploy DC guard without the blessing of the Commander in Chief. Reports tonight are that Mayor Bowser had the authority to ask and that the White House had to intervene to get the deployment. So... unclear what went down.

I hope you're feeling better but feeling frightened, disoriented, and angry are all very reasonable and understandable.
It's awful, though not surprising. My spouse, bless him, was busy all day -- not at his office as the Secret Service had booted them from it. When I showed him a picture of the Senate Chamber being occupied (and he once worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee) his reaction was the same as other DC residents. No. Impossible. The Capitol Police would never allow that. They'd never get in. When I showed him further pictures, the reaction was, well, incompetence or conspiracy.
The Cap Police shot a woman who made a wrong u turn. They routinely tackle and assault people who get "too close." The zip tie disabled activists to their wheel chairs. But I guess we're all just the easy marks and as the commentary has stated today, the U.S. Capitol was taken over by Duck Dynasty and a guy in Chewbacca bikini.

Thanks for sharing. I've been hearing some very mixed things about the Capitol Police response. It honestly sounds like it probably WAS a mixed response. I'm scared by how much worse everything might have been, it seems like total chaos.

We are too. I could hear sirens the entire time from my office (I work in a SCIF so was in)
