Three Sentence Ficathon -- Part 2

EDIT AS OF 2 FEBRUARY 2019 -- THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS OVER!  Go ahead and read and fill anything that catches your eye and comment on fills but I'm not checking it anymore and most people have moved on so any new prompts aren't likely to get much love.

We are nearing the point that the first 3SF post, which went live on 12 December, is nearing 4,600 comments. At 5,000 comments, Dreamwidth starts demanding captcha to assure you aren't a spammer bot. It's a pain and unpleasant but totally understandable. So, I'm opening a new post, for new prompts, new fills, new comments!

What does this mean?
The original 3SF post is here, so be sure to check it out, fill anything that catches your eye, and comment on anything that delights you. But don't post any new prompts there. All new prompts go here.

How long will we do this?
I will officially close the 3SF on January 31.

Does that mean you'll close this and no one can post?
Nope. It just means that we will all move on in our lives until next year and my inbox will get a vacation to Hawaii.

Remind me again, what's the 3SF?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What's a prompt?  How do I do that?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. Banners and icons are below.

How long will it go?
We'll officially close on January 31, 2019 but I don't close the entry to comments.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
So far, as near as I can tell (and I skim most entries especially from newcomers I don't recognize) we've not had any issues. As in the past, this is too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. As a reader, use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

I have noticed that some people have posted content warnings in the first lines of their fill or in the subject line. But still, it's readers beware here. Not everyone does this and no one is under any obligation to do so.

Wow, there are so many cool people here. Can I introduce myself?
Yes, in the Friending meme.

Zot the Anteater never had such a feast, but he was quickly ousted by the entire Narnian Murder. Where first there had been a bed, and then a fruit salad, and still later a veritable boiling anthill, now there was a carpet of corvids. They fanned their wings against the once pristine quilt, squishing countless ants; the more shameless crows rolled over mounds of the squirming insects; and the more fastidious ravens picked up one ant at a time in their beaks and delicately oiled their feathers.

“It’s called anting,” explained Sallowpad, almost sheepishly.

“And it’s wonderful!” cried Harah, interrupting his explanation. “There’s nothing like anting to make your skin stop crawling — it itches something fierce during molting season, you know.”

Edmund stared in horror at the shambles of his bedchamber.

“Mrs. Furner will murder you,” Willa said reverently from her perch on his shoulder. She had snagged one precious strawberry for herself; Edmund reached for another absently, then jumped and slapped at his wrist when a few tiny ants started tickling their way up his wrist.

Morgan surveyed the scene dispassionately. “You’ll need Zot back when the Murder is done,” she said, oblivious to the pun. “If someone can persuade him he won’t be pecked to pieces before lunch.”

“Peter never has this sort of problem,” Edmund muttered to himself.

“Do you expect to hold the Inquisitor’s favor forever, darling, or just before the patience of world for your charming elven eccentricities run dry?” Vivienne inquires; not quite out of the blue – Solas has proven surprisingly adept at understanding the rhythm of her verbal sparring – but it is out of earshot: discretion is crucial in these muted power struggles, when Vivienne and Solas battle over influence over the Inquisition rather than over worldviews, and that, too, Solas understands.

“Do you mean her attention, because she is young and you hold out hope she will be easy to lead – or lead away, as the case would be,” Solas replies, wry fold to his lips, and Vivienne refrains from rolling her eyes too obviously – she rather suspects he is of an age with her, and he would not be the first man to fall for a younger woman, think their pairing different, unique, and not foresee its inevitable crumbling when the two parties realize how ill-matched they are; “and once she’s grown more at ease with her role in your Chantry, once she no longer needs reassurance in the form of a fellow elf, you intend on using her remarkable open-mindedness to carve yourself my place by her ear – or do you mean her heart?”

He pauses, chuckles; “or do you still resent her for being at the right time in the right place to find herself styled as the Herald, and are targeting me because you believe I wouldn’t understand the bitterness of your spurned ambitions?”

"Be a good girl, be our little princess; just smile, be quiet, and be above it all," they all said--her parents, her brother, all the little fools who fell in line with just a snap of her fingers.

They put her in dresses, put her upon cushions and thrones, and put her in the bright lights, in a glittering dream, and all she had to do was smile and it all would be fine.

But it only took one glance down, one trip, one small tremor in the pillars of her life, to see the cesspool underneath the throne, the sand shaking her pillars loose to know she balanced on a fraying string. Yes, she could stay here, be the princess, play in the duels, beg her brother for attention, and maybe she could get all those things. The problem was, if she did stay, well, she might very well get all those things, and that'd be the worst thing of all.

Or she could get out alive.

She holds her transfer request papers in her hands and makes a choice.

The graveyard Nightmare has them chance upon is the worst thing: the most secret small characters of the private corners of their hearts laid out in plain rows, combined with the blunt threat of gravestones bearing their names. They enter all the same, fascinated and spooked, moths and a flame: there’s a draw to seeing your worst fear stated so simply, in the physicality of it, like putting it in so simple words will make it easier to defeat, and so they stumbled into the alleys; she doesn’t mean to spy on her companions’ gravestones, but she’s trying to find her own, and in doing so, she catches sight of Varric’s, and his face when he reads it, and Vivienne’s, and Solas’, and everytime she tucks her glance away, feeling ashamed.

She looks over every gravestone, and finds her name nowhere, her fear nowhere; amidst her companions standing over their graves, and the stones that show them that which makes them weakest, she’s nowhere to be found; as though the Mark pulsating on her hand had made her unknowable, unknown; erased, behind the power.

The bottle sets itself down by her elbow, and through the amber liquid, she sees a wrinkled white shirt and wild black curls - the lady reporter, the one who walks like a man and talks like a man and does her lipliner like a woman - and Kiki holds up a hand to protest, but a throaty trill echoes in the hospital corridor.

"Darling girl, you've taken your share of punches tonight, between your incomparable poise during that interview and not actually strangling Angus McCain . . . though I would toast to your good sense if you had strangled that bootlicking toad, you were, in a word, magnificent."

She'd thought it was only going to be Freddie who cared about her - Freddie lying in the bed in the room around the corner, put there by Cilenti because he'd gotten to her - and she's touched that it's been everyone, accepting her in their own way (Bel bringing her in the ambulance, Hector giving her his jacket, Mr. Brown calmly waving off the sister blocking her path, and now Miss Storm with her kind eyes and her very good whiskey toasting to Kiki's courage).

...yeah, I bet Nanami's gotten good at getting how this might be a problem.

That series kinda defaults to candy colored eeriness, so I'm glad I got the tone right.

Nanami was one of the only characters who, despite not realizing even half of the plots and power plays going on around her, was smart enough to recognize that Weird Shit was going on and that she'd only be caught up in the school and her brother's bullshit if she stayed. Her tragedy was that she still got dragged back in despite being sensible enough to try and and escape.

I'm glad you liked it; I'm fond of that last line too. Thank you for commenting!

Susan looked up from her teacup as Rattlerun tumbled through the open window straight into the side of Lord Jackatooth, who luckily was a very laidback sort of flat coat retriever and so only huffed and went back to his teacup, all while shouting "I've done it, I'm all done!"

Lucy giggled behind her cup while Susan arched a brow and helped untangle the flailing squirrel from the dog's longhaired fur before offering him a chair and a biscuit. "While it's good to see you too, Rattlerun, perhaps next time you should try the door instead."

"Ah, yes, awfully sorry about that, missed the landing, but, but! I have much more important news than that," he shouted and before any of them could politely ask, he tossed his paws up in the air and shouted "I've finally finished storing all my nuts for winter!"

There was a long pause where Lucy blew a few accidental bubbles into her tea, the dog tried to disguise his laugh as a huff, and Susan bit her lip to keep from smiling. "Oh? Just now?"

"Just now! Ah, but I meant to tell King Peter first as I promised to report to him the moment I was done, so, please, excuse me, your majesties," and like that he was gone, running out the door.

Lucy grinned after him and turned to Susan, opening her mouth to ask "when do you think we shall tell him it's April?"

"Absolutely never," Susan answered and went back to her tea.

Susan stitches herself between worlds like a needle because no one place is enough to hold her. Whether this is her failure to fit in and do as she’s told, or the fault of worlds which will always be too small, she doesn’t know, but she trails blue thread behind her wherever she goes, in the hope that it will spring up into rivers. Maybe someone who feels the same need to wander will follow in her wake.
