Three Sentence Ficathon -- Part 2

EDIT AS OF 2 FEBRUARY 2019 -- THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS OVER! Go ahead and read and fill anything that catches your eye and comment on fills but I'm not checking it anymore and most people have moved on so any new prompts aren't likely to get much love.

We are nearing the point that the first 3SF post, which went live on 12 December, is nearing 4,600 comments. At 5,000 comments, Dreamwidth starts demanding captcha to assure you aren't a spammer bot. It's a pain and unpleasant but totally understandable. So, I'm opening a new post, for new prompts, new fills, new comments!

What does this mean?
The original 3SF post is here, so be sure to check it out, fill anything that catches your eye, and comment on anything that delights you. But don't post any new prompts there. All new prompts go here.

How long will we do this?
I will officially close the 3SF on January 31.

Does that mean you'll close this and no one can post?
Nope. It just means that we will all move on in our lives until next year and my inbox will get a vacation to Hawaii.

Remind me again, what's the 3SF?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What's a prompt? How do I do that?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
So far, as near as I can tell (and I skim most entries especially from newcomers I don't recognize) we've not had any issues. As in the past, this is too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. As a reader, use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

I have noticed that some people have posted content warnings in the first lines of their fill or in the subject line. But still, it's readers beware here. Not everyone does this and no one is under any obligation to do so.

Hera never wanted kids of her own; it wasn't that she hated the idea of being a parent, she just never thought she'd be any good at it.

Kanan had grown up as a Jedi - avoiding relationships and other complications - and even once the Order was gone, he never expected to form a solid enough relationship that children would be in his future.

Yet, here they both are, with two children (not to mention a droid and Zeb), their lives in chaos, being hunted by the Empire, and neither one of them would change a single thing.

“Your turn,” mumbled Hera into his shoulder, so Kanan let Chopper drag him out of bed. He left the light off, of course; even before he’d lost his sight, he could have made his way from Hera’s quarters to the galley blindfolded — and at any rate, all he had to do was follow Chopper’s disgruntled mumbles and binary insults... not to mention the whispered accusations and ominous dripping noises coming from the kitchen.

“Now what did you do?” Kanan asked, and he didn’t need his sight or the Force to sense the guilty looks and pointed fingers deflecting blame as two voices protested in unison “He did it!”

It doesn't matter which two voices and which two pointed figures. It could be any of them. I'm surprised they don't have a baby monitor. Love the routine-ness of the "your turn." (Also love Chopper's binary insults).

Labyrinth, any, "the Labyrinth has a sense of humour"

It's impossible to have a good storming off in Labyrinth. One moment, he, the damn King of this place who aught to be able to have one good dramatic exit damn it, turns on his heel and means to stride off and leave Sarah squawking in his dust. He goes to turn a corner and just finds himself on the other side of the room as Sarah whips around, staring at him in confusion.

He'd love to curse the Labyrinth blue for this petty silliness, but for now he can only pretend he meant to do this as he tosses up a hand and shouts "and one more thing-!"

Ahaha perfect! I love that Jareth tries to play it off like he meant to do it and it wasn't just the Labyrinth being sassy.

It's kind of the only option he has left unless he wants to, horror of horrors, be honest. Which he's not going to do willingly.

The Hobbit, Fíli and Kíli, soothing nightmares

Kili had always been prone to nightmares, ever since he was little, but it had always been their mother who had held him, soothed him, through the fear and the tears. But now it was Fili’s responsibility as Kili’s older brother to do the same when the distance from home and the fear of the unknown and the creatures and battles they fought wormed their way into Kili’s subconscious and left him shaking in his bedroll at night.

He took his job seriously, creeping quietly over from his own bedroll to hold his brother tight, pet his hair, tell him it would be alright because they had each other and their uncle and all the rest of the company to protect them, and what better cure for a nightmare was there?

On AO3

He wakes up suddenly with a scream locked behind clenched teeth and tightly shut lips. Tauriel wakes up beside him, her hand moving to his shoulder; Kíli feels instant shame for disturbing her rest.

"Kíli, are you well?" She asks softly.

They both know the answer even as he nods and says so, before mentioning that he's going for a walk. Tauriel smiles sadly as her fingers caress his cheeks gently before nodding and bidding him to have a safe journey since she knows where he'll likely be, come morning's light.

He's inside Fíli's rooms, quietly slipping into his brother's bed as Fíli blearily holds up his blankets for Kíli to get in. Kíli stares up at the dark ceiling as his older brother sleepily soothes the clinging shadows of the nightmare.

Any, any, half is a lie but the good part is true

"Is it true?" Touka demands, slamming in through the door, and Hashirama leaps up, startled - and confused, admittedly - trying to ask her- "Is it true you great oaf? Have you bartered off my baby cousin to that-" she breaks off when Hashirama doesn't have an answer for her, snarling, and whirls on her heel, storming away.

. . .Tobirama? Hashirama follows her hurriedly, calling after her to explain, but she's not listening to him, striding down the halls towards the family quarters.

"Tobi! Tell me that the news isn't true, that this tree-faced idiot hasn't promised you to Uchiha Madara for his-" Touka stops, choking, as she slams Tobirama's door open, and Hashirama sputters in confusion at what she was saying, darting to her side only to see-

Tobirama is flushed darkly, spread all down his neck and across his bare shoulders, and half tucked behind him, in a wild tangle of hair and similar state of undress, Madara makes a rude gesture at the door.

"Now, don't take this the wrong way, Julian, but I just don't understand how you can have a relationship with someone who practically never tells the truth," Miles said.

"Well, it's sort of like playing a perpetual game of two-truths-and-a-lie? He knows that I know that he's probably not even capable of being completely honest and honestly that's fine by me because the best parts are always true enough-- if you know what I mean."

"I'm going to finish this glass and pretend that I don't."

Julian is such a romantic :D I suppose Miles is just too straightforward of a guy to really understand. Love it!

For a woman wrapped only in an ancient tapestry (a delightful scene with a unicorn and a suggestively clad maiden), Phryne was nonetheless the most composed person in the room.

“Drop that carpet, miss,” growled the thug.

“You wouldn’t want me to do that,” Phryne said with a demure smile that fooled precisely no one, “I haven’t got a thing underneath — except my gun, of course.” A bulge in the tapestry motioned impatiently for her opponent to drop his own weapon. “So let the nice inspector go, and I’ll consider not shooting you for impertinence.”

The thug shoved Jack into her arms and made his escape. The museum’s alarms rang belatedly, the security gate closing off the avenue of pursuit.

“I think I’ll call your bluff, Miss Fisher,” Jack said. “You lied about having a gun under there.”

“Of course,” she purred, drawing him inside the folds of the tapestry draped around her bare shoulders, “but the good part is true.”

This is perfection; like a scene from the series.

How dare he! That ham-fisted oaf! Harry sighed as the voice in his head railed at Uncle Vernon, used to it, and watched the letter - a letter! addressed to him! - shred in his Uncle's hands. And you!

What? What did I do? Harry asked, wounded.

Honestly, the voice said heavily, there will be more, and when there are, shove one up your shirt, you little fool.

obviously this scenario is one where the Horcrux is self-aware

and the brevity forbids there being enough there there to observe a distinction between "long and intimate association with Harry has compelled Tom to grow a heart" and "Tom is playing at Harry's live-in mentor until such moment as such behavior ceases to benefit Tom, at which point Harry's sunk"

assuming such a distinction exists

and also there is such potential for this soul piece to have goals that conflict with those of the other soul pieces

Harry hung back shyly, watching a lady across the robe shop measure another skinny boy.

Oh, that's a Malfoy; they're snobbish but not bad to associate with, really. his voice said, and Harry frowned, making a little confused sound. Actually. . . You could definitely use a Malfoy in your corner, particularly while you're young.

Erm? Harry questioned, taking a tentative step forwards.

His voice sighed. Go make friends with him. he instructed Harry, and he smiled, moving happily towards the other boy as another lady came to ask him if he needed Hogwarts robes. He nodded shyly.

Hush, it'll all be . . . fine. his voice said, and the distracted tone made Harry fidget anxiously. Shh. I'm going to go . . . quiet. I'll be back, don't worry, but I'll . . . interfere with things that need to happen if I speak to you now.

(also: has Tom spotted Quirrell? if so: oooh, so they do have conflicting goals! if not: so why is Tom stressing over the Sorting?)

They aren't in the Great Hall just yet so no, he hasn't spotted Quirrell (also remember, Voldemort wasn't directly possessing Quirrell until he started 'messing up' and it seemed to intensify over the course of the year; and Tom might not recognise 'himself' in Quirrell immediately, especially if he doesn't know to look. . .) and well, Tom's in Harry's head . . . wouldn't want the Sorting Hat to recognise him and call him out, now would he? ;) (And mayyybe Tom doesn't want to interfere with little Harry's own Sorting to wherever he belongs. Maybe.)

Oh! Oh, yes, the Sorting absolutely would be mortal danger for Tom, wouldn't it...

Finally Professor McGonagall settled the battered hat on Harry's head, and he tried not to squirm too obviously, fingers curling into his trousers. What was this even about? What was supposed to-

Well, what have we here? a voice said in his head, but it wasn't his voice and Harry stiffened, throat locking with the impulse to yell.

This is such a delight! I'm still catching up on leaving proper comments on all the awesome fills you and other folks have been leaving for my prompts these last few days, but I wanted to let you know these in particular have been some of my absolute favorites; there's a kind of poetry to how you're using this format repeated, and I strongly encourage you to keep going if you have inspiration to do so - you're really onto something neat here.

Thank you so much! ^.^ I'm delighted to hear that; this AU was definitely an accident but it's . . . intriguing. I'll keep on as long as I can keep thinking of bits that fit the feeling and style and . . . odd new Harry (and Voice).

OH NOES. People are prompting and filling and enjoying the prompts and the fills! And they've taken on a life of their own! WRITE ON, Friends. The mod is enjoying this as much as everyone else. if you like, and so it gets a little more spread out so that others can enjoy it, too, people could also give new prompts for Harry's Voice, with a link to this original thread. (We've done this with Narnia kangaroo verse in past years and I prompted the Ivan Vorpatil maneuver after reading a fill Cofax did). You obviously don't have to fill them but it could also give you ideas. For instance, I'd love to see, Harry Potter, Harry and his voice; first days of classes (especially potions and transfiguration). I can put that in a new prompt. No pressure though. Once this gets hard, it's no fun, so most important is to enjoy yourself.

I've read all of your parts and I'm loving them...although that voice is a bit suspicious lol - here's hoping it's the best voice for Harry and is going to keep track of your AO3 posts now! :-)

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Harry was shaking before the hat screamed directly around his head, and he slid off the stool hurriedly as soon as Professor McGonagall removed it from his head. It took him a moment to figure out where he was supposed to go, rattled by the uncomfortable feeling and even more so by the lack of his own Voice in his head.

Of course, the shrieking and jumping from the red-and-gold table jogged his memory quick enough, and he shook his head and moved that way, catching a glimpse of the sharp pout on Malfoy's face as he walked between the tables.

Harry bit his lip as he trailed after their prefects as instructed, with the rest of the new Gryffindor First Years. Several of the others were talking amongst themselves but Harry was . . . too nervous.

A gentle bump against his shoulder and he glanced sideways, then ducked his head, gently bumping back against Neville, who smiled shyly back at him, looking more than a little nervous himself.

oh, hey, are we to assume that Harry didn't meet Ron at the station (bc Tom already knew how to get through the barrier) or on the train, or if they did meet then it didn't go well (probs bc Draco)?

Harry did not meet the Weasleys on the platform, and while he may have met Ron on the train, it was not in the same way (and, of course, with Draco being more friendly to him already, Draco would no doubt seek him out . . . and if an altercation began, which, Weasley & Malfoy . . . not unlikely, Harry would side with a new friend over random new person, just as he did in canon, if with different results).

If Harry continues being friendly with Draco than even if they aren't antagonistic directly probably Ron won't want to be very friendly with Harry.

Harry inched through the portrait hole revealed behind the Fat Lady (that seemed rude, Harry thought distractedly, but she answered to it) and into a warm, inviting room filled with tapestries and rugs and a roaring fire and-

Oh lord, his voice said suddenly, everything is so red. Gryffindors, why did you have to be a blasted lion. . .

Harry smothered a giggle and looked around, feeling . . . warm and welcome here.

How does that sound?" Cara asked him, grinning from ear to ear in her own place among the rest of the Tomorrow People.

Resorting to what had always provided some semblance of solace, River crouches down beneath the doctor's table and brings her knees to her chest, as if making herself as small as possible could ever be enough to dodge their swooping cries.

"You do not understand" says his mother, and "You do not understand" says the Lord Chancellor, and in the confusion and pain and fear of the moment, Idra sees a way to take that not-understanding and make of it a weapon, at once both attack and defense. Later, he thinks, I will be the unruly, disreputable cousin, and when there are more children between me and the succession, I will teach them how to not-understand. And done carefully, properly, all planned - he thinks it might be rather good fun.

Maleficent, Maleficent & or / Diaval, the joy of flight

Diaval made it his mission to coax Maleficent into flight whenever she became too serious, too sad, too busy — really, whenever possible. If this meant pelting her from above with acorns until she gave chase, then so much the better.

For her part, Maleficent was never so absorbed in her task that she failed to notice the raven sneaking up on her, but the game clearly gave Diaval such satisfaction that she didn’t mind indulging him — especially since she always caught him in the end.

Aww, this is adorable and funny; just how I can see Diaval taking care of his Mistress, honestly. And Maleficent knowing what he's about (at least partly) and letting him all the same~ 🖤

Jim was already breathless when their minds touched but the scorching heat and the yawning desperate need driving Spock, wiping out everything else in his mind. . .

He gasped, struggling for breath, fingers digging into Spock's shoulder as he groaned, almost a growl, against Jim's neck as he bucked, hips all but crushing Jim against the dirt below them. Even with Spock so far gone there were no words in his mind - and dragging Jim rapidly past the point of no return with him - he could feel their very beings twining together with a viciously possessive pull; one he threw himself into willingly, body arching up into Spock's forcefully.

Juliet had been technically the other woman throughout her relationship with Goodwin, much as he had insisted that his marriage to Harper was over, yet she did not care; she always knew that given the chance to leave the island and return to Rachel, Juliet would walk away from her relationship with Goodwin without a backward glance.

With James, she's finally got the chance at a future; she can finally let go of the past as Juliet Burke, will have a life as Juliet LaFleur.

Then Kate returns to the island, and Juliet sees the way James looks at her, and even though James says he's committed to her now, Juliet wonders which of them is really the other woman.

AWESOME Lost entry honey!

Lourdes had chosen in the moment to believe Michaela when she said she'd been going to turn down Jared's proposal, that she gave Lourdes and Jared's marriage her blessing, because she wanted so badly for it to be true.

Yet now Jared's sharing secrets with Michaela that he won't share with her, he's getting into trouble at work because of one of the many secrets have become a part of their lives since Flight 828 mysteriously returned after 5 years, and now he's lying in the hospital because of who knows what situation Michaela has involved him in, he's calling Michaela's name instead of hers and some nurse even tried to turn her away because "his wife was already there"?

Lourdes is Jared's wife, yet she feels like she, and not Michaela, is the other woman in their relationship.

Any; Any;.you can tell by the kindness of a dog how a human should be.

The eight-legged creature chirruped and it’s antennae flailed against Janeway’s legs with enough force to leave welts.

“Do forgive the temerity of my domesticated companion!” their alien host bowed deeply enough to touch his nose to his ankle, “It does not habitually greet my guests with such enthusiasm.”

“Oh, I don’t mind at all,” Janeway’s smile was genuine, “We have domestic canine companions on Earth and I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like.”

Oh thank you. These are balms to a wounded soul today. Today our home is without a labrador for the first time in 25 years and I like to think of this 8-legged companion thrusting a slimy toy into Janeway's hands.

We just started watching Voyager from the beginning, and this is great!!

Sedna crumpled to her knees on the silty seafloor, sobbing in rage and despair, screaming her defiance into the water and raising her head to glare at the far-off silhouette of the boat they had pushed her from; it was sailing away, without a care, and she looked down at her mangled hands instead, cringing at the sight and keening, though the places her fingers had been no longer pained her.

A great black head pushed suddenly between her hands, and Sedna's eyes snapped up to meet his as she smiled, softer tears gathering in her eyes. She threw her arms around his neck, clinging to him, and he pressed in, head nuzzling onto her shoulder and one paw coming up to rest across her hip.

Thank you so much. I did not know Sedna and appreciate the introduction and that she finds solace in her sea-dog.

I'm glad you liked it. Sedna's is one of my favourite myths, and I always loved that the dog she adored so much on land is implied to be her staunchest guardian once she became a goddess in the sea.

Oh, someone talking about Sedna? Hot damn, sign me up. Man, I almost forgot there was a version with her and a dog--I usually hear the bird one more. What an unusual treat.

^.^ Oo? I have literally never come across a version with a bird, only the dog one, and I really love her story. (Then again I hardly come across anything about Sedna, even when looking, mostly.)

Okay, after double checking, it turns out there's multiple bird versions, but the one I heard was that Sedna was a beautiful but haughty woman who rejected all of her suitors until one day a new man showed up. He was handsome and charming and promised her that she'd never want for food or shelter if she married him. She agreed, they married, and then left to go to his home. When they got to his island, he revealed himself as a bird spirit and then showed her where she was going to live--while he provided for her, he gave her fish guts to eat and left her to live in a nest. Dismayed, Sedna somehow got a message home (or her father just came to check on her, I forget which) and asked her father to save her and take her home. He agreed and the two tried to escape in the kayak, but her new husband appeared and her father killed him so they could escape. However, killing the bird spirit enraged all the other birds who lived on the island too, so when Sedna and her father got out into open water, the birds swarmed them and kicked up a storm. Blaming Sedna, her father tossed her into the water in hopes that the birds would spare him, cutting off her fingers to get her to let go. So, yeah, the ending's pretty much the same once they're in the boat.

I love Sedna--there's a hell of a lot of character to her and in the end not even death could take her down.

Oo thanks for looking them up and telling me! Also . . . that's actually fairly different from the only versions of the story I've heard. (Wherein Sedna denies all her suitors and chooses to live with her dog; it usually says chooses to marry the dog instead which I know mythology is like that but it now tends to make me think 'ace'. And the suitors take her out on a boat and try and force her to choose one of them, and when she refuses still they push her off, and chop off her fingers when she clings to the side, etc. same story from there. No mention of her father in that one.)

I think that's part of why I do love Sedna so much even though her story is kind of dreadful, as far as what is done to her - no matter what she was a strong person who refused to be budged and even in death she became a goddess rather than be taken down. And then even as a goddess she's strong and unyielding but not cruel even in retribution after her death.

“He really likes you,” Lily said in surprise as she watched the shaggy black dog lean into James, who scratched the dog’s head and ruffled its ears fondly. “Maybe you’re not so bad after all, Potter.”

James smiled weakly as the dog made a big fuss barking over nothing, “I like the mutt well enough, but Sirius is the real dog person in our group.”

The first time Sirius transformed in front of Lily, they were on a mission for the Order and on the run for their lives; Sirius saved the day by tackling the pursuing Death Eaters and leading them on a merry chase across the moor. It wasn’t until they were back safe and sound that Lily turned on James, poked him in the chest and accused him of cheating.

“I never even looked at another girl, Lils!” he protested.

“Not that,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Him.”

James and Sirius eyed each other uncertainly. “Lily, we uh, we never...”

“For Merlin’s sake, the dog!” She hit James on the arm.

“I told you about the whole Animagus thing already, and Remus—”

“Yes, I know,” said Lily, summoning the last vestiges of patience, “but I’ve never seen Padfoot before. Or have I?”

Sirius started edging towards the door, but it slammed shut at a glance from Lily. “Sit,” she barked, “and stay.”

She turned back to James and advanced on him, wand at the ready. “Do you know when I first started liking you, James Potter? When I first considered you as something other than a thorn in my side? I’ll tell you, in case you’ve forgotten — it was when I saw you petting a dog. A big, black dog who obviously adored you. And everyone knows dogs are great judges of character, right? Well imagine my surprise when I find out that dog...“ a rolled-up newspaper appeared in her hand, and she smacked James with it in time with each subsequent word, “...that dog was your best friend!”

“For what it’s worth,” Sirius said with an insufferably cheeky grin, “I do adore you, Prongs.”

Kingdom Hearts, Lea/Sora, you look familiar

The sight of the endless sands of Agrabah is, by this point, as familiar to Sora as his own home world. Having Lea there busting heartless with him is a little different, sure, but it still feels right, laughing as they fight back to back against the darkness.

"Sure brings back memories, right, Axel?" Sora says, elbowing Lea once the tide of enemies is gone. "Makes me remember the old days, back when we were in the Organization."

Lea starts, looking back at Sora. "What?"

"What?" Sora blinks, equally as startled. There was a thought that had been there, not a moment before- a warm and tender memory that now seems as distant as a dream. He and Lea stare at each other for a long while, before Lea shakes his head and brushes it off without further comment. Sora puts a hand to his chest as Lea walks away, marveling at the lonely pain of memory that isn't his and that he can't remember.

“Your first mistake, my delectable feathered friend, was thinking you could outwit a certified Super Genius,” the Coyote lectured as he began untangling the ropes from around the Roadrunner’s spindly legs (never noticing, of course, the growing pile of coils knotting around his own furry feet).

“Beep beep,” said the Roadrunner, and took off — towing the Coyote and a trail of dust behind him. With every skidmark, rock and cactus, the Coyote’s yips and yelps echoed down the canyon.

And I just realized that I didn’t see the / so... have another!

The Coyote stared into the soulful eyes of his prey, and his sensitive nose twitched. It made no sense, he was an apex predator (not to mention a Super Genius) and he finally had his prey in his clutches, but for the life of him, he couldn’t bring himself to touch one delicate feather; perhaps, he thought to himself, it had always been about the chase...?

The Roadrunner beeped softly, trustingly — and then so loudly and joyfully that the Coyote jumped, hit his head on a rock overhang, and loosened his hold — and there went the Roadrunner in a burst of speed and a cloud of dust... again.

Another replaces them, a shape with more limbs than Asra has fingers, its size wavering as it undulates. Sneaking a glance, Julian finds Asra's hands still resting behind his head, and sweat forms on Julian's neck.

Sometimes, if Jester is very good and her room is dimly lit, the shadows become friends. Hamsters, unicorns, and hamster unicorns prance across her floor and walls, and she throws off her covers to dance with them. She does not have to worry about making the Traveler jealous; she knows he must send them to play with her when the nights grow long and her mama grows busy.

All around the worlds, black creatures seeped from the ground, appeared in the air from literally nowhere, it seemed like the shadows that have always been around had finally come out to play.

Also in multiple worlds, protectors of The Light summoned forth their Keybladess and got ready for the immense battle that would rage forth through all the worlds, not only just in The Keyblade Graveyard.

Those protectors were Sora, Riku, Kairi, King Mickey, Donald and Goofy in one world area, Roxas, Axel and Xion in another world area, whereas in another the finally reunited Aqua, Ventus and Terra raised their Keyblades... ready for the Light to emerge Victorious.

This was interesting and enjoyable to read, thank you for answering my prompt. <3

Persephone paused half a step into her husband's study, then sighed, letting the door close behind her and gesturing pointedly. A bright, happy-looking stand of asphodel sprouted out of nothing, leavening the heavy shadows creeping in curling tendrils and eerie shapes as she swept past Thanatos with a huff.

Hades raised an eyebrow at her and Persephone rolled her eyes, moving through the shadows - one half-animal shape batted at her ankle, but she ignored it - to settle into her husband's lap comfortably; was it her fault Thanatos was so . . . over-dramatic?

Ah, I'm so glad I decided to go back through and poke around in some of the past fills. This is fun--I like Persephone going out of her way to try brighten up everything and everyone even if it is a bit of a struggle.

"Alucard, no," Integra said without lifting her head, rolling her pen over her index finger and pointing the back end of it at a particularly enterprising bit of shadow that had inched its not-muzzle over onto the surface of her desk, "I am not in the mood."

"Why, my Master, I know not what you mean?" Alucard chuckled, his voice coming from everywhere and nowhere in particular in that way that made the maids skitter about the corridors when they heard him. "Are you ever in the mood?" he added dryly.

Integra snorted, fighting down a smile, for all the aggravation of dealing with Alucard. "One would think you might be better at sounding innocent," she said, shifting to lean one elbow on her desk - the semi-monstrous shadows were still darkening the corners of the room and gamboling like hopeful puppies around her, "after so many centuries of practise lying."

Alucard materialised at last only to give her a wounded expression that hardly suited his face as he sank into a chair before her desk without invitation, hands over his cold heart. "Master, would I lie to you?"

Integra smirked, barely noticing the fading of her tension headache as she indulged her servant - at least in banter, in granting her attention. "What do you want, Alucard?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

. . .I tried, but this one did not want to stay in 3 sentences. I, like Integra, blame Alucard.

Ilmarë sits perched in a tree just within the boundaries of the dark wood. Time passes; clouds hide the moon, and she can feel the shadows gathering behind her. She knows that if she turns around, the shadows will scatter at once; but if she waits, a shadow will detach itself from the other shadows, a pair of leathery wings will wrap around her, and so long as she does not turn to look, Thuringwethil's clawed fingers will gently caress her hair.

Rainbow Serpent looped a protective coil around the world unimaginatively called Earth, keeping it out of Anansi’s reach; Aslan sprawled on Narnia’s hearth, firmly anchoring his young, favored world.

“Spoilsports,” laughed Anansi, and Rainbow Serpent could not help but wonder whether they had won or lost this round.

He's halfway done with kicking the crap out of the vending machine when the memory hits him right between the eyes, through the haze of alcohol and dizzying rage.

It had happened just like this, in a moment so surreally like this one that Al actually turns and looks, half-expecting to see Sam standing there asking him what was wrong.

But Project Starbright was long ago, and even Project Quantum Leap is nothing but a memory for most, just memories that Al wished would fade away sometimes, like his best friend seemed to, too many years ago.

Ooh, this is good – you’ve packed a lot of intensity into three sentences, and the second one in particular hits hard.

Much like chess = Nate, starbright immediately sparked Quantum Leap for me. Glad you liked this one too :)

Gil-galad dreams of fire, of a sword that shatters, and when he wakes he knows with certainty that he will not return alive from the morrow's battle.

He goes outside his tent and looks upward, his eyes searching out the familiar brightness of Gil-Estel. It is a hopeful reminder: that evil has been defeated before and shall be again, though he will not be there to see it.

Ooh, this is beautiful and sad. The stars as a reminder of light in dark places: perfect for Tolkien.

The world is not as black and white as Nate once thought it could be, and even if it were, at this point he would struggle to say which side he was on.

Black king, white knight, sometimes it feels as if it all might as well be the same thing, or perhaps it just doesn't matter at all any more.

Maybe all anyone can ever really do is their best, and when it doesn't turn out so well, hope the strength remains within to pick up the pieces.

Oh man, I love this take on the prompt, and I can almost feel Nate’s weariness here. Very nice!

"Hey now!" Mama said, laughing softly. "That's hardly fair; don't you think so, darling?" she asked Adrian, holding out her hands to him as he giggled again and snuggled closer to Papa instead.

Aww, this is just irresistibly cute (and a little sad, considering where canon takes them). And of course they play chess. Of course. I love it.

The sight calmed the stabbing ache in Adrian's chest a little with a burble of amusement, and he strode lightly back to the board and seated himself opposite Trevor, smirking. "I do, yes. My- I learned how to play when I was young."

There’s more! This is great, and I love the image of Trevor toying with a bishop while glaring at it. Those two would make fine opponents, if they didn’t stab each other first.

There's more! It occurred to me as I was glancing over the first one again. And Trevor glaring at the bishop just. XD (Oh come on, what's a light stabbing between . . . friends?)

Over a game of chess, they've had conversations; some interesting, some dull conversations and of course there were a few arguments too.

But over time and many games, Rush has developed a respect for Colonel Young and his responsibilities for the crew, and Young came to realize why Rush was like he is; a pain in the arse but he knew that Rush, underlying, cared enough about Desinty and it's people.

Over a game of chess, they sat in the observation deck, years later, still on Destiny, now good friends.

Rock-paper-scissors might've been easier way to decide, but Mal never particularly liked things the easy way.

This is great, especially that bit of dialogue and the last line — I love that they’ve turned to chess to settle the kind of question rock-paper-scissors is usually used for.

Person of Interest, Lionel Fusco + Sameen Shaw, unusual friendship

The waitress notices them because they seat themselves in her section, the middle-aged guy whose entire appearance screams ‘cop’, drinking coffee and pretending to read a menu first. Then comes the tiny woman who looks more dangerous, somehow, than a New York detective, sliding in opposite him. She says a few words, he barks a dry laugh, while she doesn't respond - she's not a colleague, not an informer - and the waitress, who’s tips depend on her reading of people, thinks, 'Huh, they're friends.'

I love that the waitress can see how different they are, but how they're still friends. Thank you <3
