Three Sentence Ficathon

UPDATE! EDIT!
We're running into the Dreamwidth comment limits so all new prompts should be posted here Keep responding to and filling already posted prompts here, but all new ones should go to the new thread!

Someone did this banner for me a couple of years ago.  It's great, isn't it?  If it was you, please step up and take a bow!
It was
[personal profile] st_aurafina!   Thank you again!

caramelsilver ran one last year on Livejournal and I did two over here a few years ago. We'll keep it open until January 31, 2019 which should give everyone time to play a little. This is a delightful part of the online fandom community.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You post prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.  So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

What else?

You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged!  (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences?  Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes.  Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please.  I'd love to create a nifty banner with an embed code but I fail at it.  So if you create one, I'll post it and everyone can use it.

How long will it go?
Tentatively, we'll close it on January 31, 2019.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?

Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought about this.  It wasn't an issue the last 2 times I ran this but times change.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

And here, have some icons!

I'll start things off...

Edit to add on 12/18/2018 Please check out this update here. And this friending meme if you're so inclined here.

Howl's Moving Castle, Sophie/Howl

[personal profile] betony 2018-12-16 02:58 am (UTC)(link)

As a girl, Sophie would had said she knew exactly what a house ought to be: made up of four sturdy walls, respectably decorated, and most important of all, having the common decency to stay in one place. Wizard Howl's castle darting about in the hills above Market Chipping is nothing but a disgrace, even before she sees the squalor in which it's kept with her own eyes; Sophie reminds herself sternly that, curse or no curse, she ought not to long for such a vagabond existence.

A house may be one thing, though, but a home is quite another, and Sophie's heart is quite certain which it wants.

Ooooh! This is great -- I love the narrative voice, and Sophie's thoughts on houses and homes and which one she ultimately ends up choosing. Lovely.

Timothy never saw his life going this way, roaving around with Jack and his family. There was so much darkness when he saw his future, hunger, exhaustion, and wanting, but things turned out so, so differently.

They sing loudly in the car, and Jack drives faster than he should and he realizes that maybe it's not home he thought he would have but it's so, so much better.

Ooh, this is great – wonderfully hopeful, set against the darkness of the past. I love it!

This group is one of my favorites because of that. It's hopeful against the dark and it is a good thing to have in my back pocket.

(Note: It's the 1920s, and Esme is full Romanichal and refers to herself as a gypsy. This is only in-keeping with the terms canon has established.)

***

He promises her every day, pulls the snow and the whiskey out of her hands and replaces them with his hands-his mouth-his body, swearing we can run, we can always run, we can go anywhere, we'll go travelling with the kids.

And the gypsy parts of her dream of a wagon, of sleeping under the stars (too many to count, but she wants to teach the kids how to find your way and how to read their secrets).

His name - her name now too - is the millstone around her neck, locking her behind iron bars, in smooth polished rooms, answering to "Mrs. Shelby" and putting up the pretense that she doesn't want to escape.

Oh no... This is very good, and terribly sad, and I haven’t (yet) seen the canon, but I hope she does find a way to escape.

Vagabonds (Inu-Yasha)

"Vagabonds? Us? How- How dare he call my woman such a thing? You will be princess of the wolf demon tribes!" Kouga shouted, his fingers flexing restlessly, held back from going after the unsuspecting farmer, Kagome suspected, only by her hand on his arm.

She tried to stop giggling, because she really should tell him off for that claim again, but his offense was just so funny. "I mean," Kagome said through giggles, looking at Ginta and Hakkaku, who looked almost as amused even if they were trying to hide it, "we do kind of look the part right now?" she pointed out, indicating their dirty, ragged state.

OK, this is just great, and I am laughing right along with Kagome. She’s got a lot to put up with, doesn’t she?

Homestuck, Wayward Vagabond

He thought he knew what Vagabond meant, wandering through the desert, no one alongside him, no stop in sight. Not a place to return to. Not goal in mind.

Re: Homestuck, Wayward Vagabond

[personal profile] capribornio 2018-12-17 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But he still felt like a Vagabond now, even with so many people with him, with a past shared, with a future certain. He wasn't wandering anymore, the meteor going in a specific direction, the model of a city in construction in a specific place. Then why did this all feel so temporary, so likely to disappear in an instant?

He is not who he used to be anymore, the title of Mayor firmly placed and widely recognized. The city built, friends found, friends waved goodbye to. And he knows now, however, that for as long as he remembers all the places he's been to and all the people he loved and hated, he will always be a Wayward Vagabond.

Aaaaaah, WV! I love this so much – It’s wistful and tentative and optimistic all at once, and just spot-on in terms of character, and I love that it ends with the thought that Wayward Vagabond is who his experiences have made him, and not just something he’s been forced into by circumstance.

I'm glad to hear I managed to get WV's character right! He's one of my HS top five characters, so of course I had to honor him.

Bomb Girls, Kate Andrews

[personal profile] nocowardsoul 2018-12-17 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The trailer for her music tour instantly reminds Kate of the caravan she grew up, of all the years traveling around, cold winters and cool summers and the vagabonds her father pointed out to her. "Those are the consequences of idleness and sin," he used to say.

As she settles into her temporary home, she reminds herself of the difference: today, she is the one in charge.

Ooh! I don’t know the canon, but i love this – you’ve managed to fit a lot of story into a few short sentences, especially that last one. Really nicely done.
