Three Sentence Ficathon

UPDATE! EDIT!
We're running into the Dreamwidth comment limits so all new prompts should be posted here Keep responding to and filling already posted prompts here, but all new ones should go to the new thread!

Someone did this banner for me a couple of years ago.  It's great, isn't it?  If it was you, please step up and take a bow!
It was
[personal profile] st_aurafina!   Thank you again!

caramelsilver ran one last year on Livejournal and I did two over here a few years ago. We'll keep it open until January 31, 2019 which should give everyone time to play a little. This is a delightful part of the online fandom community.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You post prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.  So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

What else?

You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged!  (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences?  Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes.  Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please.  I'd love to create a nifty banner with an embed code but I fail at it.  So if you create one, I'll post it and everyone can use it.

How long will it go?
Tentatively, we'll close it on January 31, 2019.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?

Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought about this.  It wasn't an issue the last 2 times I ran this but times change.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

And here, have some icons!

I'll start things off...

TaT spoilers?

The longest night of the year is celebrated with masks and merriment in Attolia, and always it fills Attolia with dread to watch her court descend into disorder: knives could be hidden too easily within the sweeping cloaks of her courtiers, plots against her rule thrive in privacy. When a boy who smells of the kitchens pulls her into the dance, it is only the last in a long series of indignities, and when he presses his lips against hers, she can't even muster up anything more than weary indignation--besides, Irene thinks crossly later, it hadn't been that much of a kiss anyway.
(Years later, when the Thief of Eddis kisses her again, Attolia registers dimly that he's learned a thing or two.)

Greek mythology, she comes in colors everywhere

Without a doubt Helen of Sparta is the most beautiful woman in the world, but no man can swear to have seen her with his own eyes, even here in the plains of Troy, where they live and fight and die for her sake. And so in their mind's eyes, they give her the features of the loves they left behind, assign her color and complexion they find most striking, make her base and brazen to suit their fantasies--for what does that matter, when she is as above their reach as the rainbows above?
"A pity," Cassandra muses from the walls, and her sister-in-law, small and drab and heartily tired of being blamed for a war she did not cause, agrees sadly.

Greek mythology, a life for a life

Hektor wakes again on the day of his death, and it makes no difference: his duty will still lead him from the safety of the gates.
Achilles wakes again on the day of his dishonor, and it makes no difference: his anger will still be satisfied only by spilled blood.
Andromache wakes again on the day she loses everything, and takes up her husband's sword before he wakes: better to kill this monster of a Myrmidon if she can, or die in battle before she can be made a slave to his son.

The House of Lancaster is made of monsters, Richard knows that well; his father's death and Edmund's poor severed head is all the reminder he needs of their intemperate viciousness. But to think that that they had dared overthrow his brother Edward--to think Anne had been bartered to them like she was nothing--
Man after man bleeds out at Tewkesbury, and it is not enough to satisfy Richard.

Kei closed his eyes, heart aching, as he listened to Sho's passionate exhortations about coming together in Mallepa, behaving and believing in a sense of community, making things better for all of them left on the fringes - pushed to the fringes, kicked and reviled.

It was a good speech, and Sho was skilled and determined enough to even perhaps make that future a reality if he kept fighting, as he always would.

Kei only feared this city and its darkness would eat his bright-eyed, bright-souled little one for daring to fight.

Greek mythology, the descent of dionysus

[personal profile] betony 2018-12-15 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)

Prosymnos' hands still on the oars, his eyes far more sober than anyone's ought to be in the wine-god's presence; "Are you certain of your course, my lord?" he asks, warily.

As a matter of fact, Dionysus is not--but his mother is down there, lost to death before he ever knew her, and now Ariadne too, lost after he'd had years to learn to love her, and that settles the matter; he takes a last bracing gulp from his winecup and swings his legs over the boat's edge.

"Steady and sure," he replies--and lets himself fall.

Flower-in-the-Night may be brilliant at negotiations (not, Abdullah thinks proudly, that this ought to come as any surprise; his wife is brilliant at everything she does), but this might be too much even for her skills.

Something booms behind the door to Crown Prince Justin's chambers, and Princess Beatrice bellows something about cats in untoward places, muddy boots resting on official treaties, and....improperly darned socks?

"I think," proposes Flower-in-the-Night, "that perhaps they might be amenable to having dinner with us some other night," and Abdullah heartily agrees; they might be called upon to settle diplomatic disagreements, but no one said anything about domestic ones.

They say the Lady of Luck and the Lady of Death were not always the only gods, that there were other creators, gentler and varied, but over the generations Luck turned against them one by one and Death gathered them home to her halls, until none were left to mediate the Sweet Sisters' endless war. The world became their plaything and any care they might once have held for its people withered in the face of their black and scalding hate.

When they fight, cities burn; when they kiss, nations fall; and we have no respite until this universe's end.
