Three Sentence Ficathon

UPDATE! EDIT!
We're running into the Dreamwidth comment limits so all new prompts should be posted here Keep responding to and filling already posted prompts here, but all new ones should go to the new thread!

Someone did this banner for me a couple of years ago.  It's great, isn't it?  If it was you, please step up and take a bow!
It was
[personal profile] st_aurafina!   Thank you again!

caramelsilver ran one last year on Livejournal and I did two over here a few years ago. We'll keep it open until January 31, 2019 which should give everyone time to play a little. This is a delightful part of the online fandom community.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You post prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.  So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

What else?

You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged!  (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences?  Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes.  Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please.  I'd love to create a nifty banner with an embed code but I fail at it.  So if you create one, I'll post it and everyone can use it.

How long will it go?
Tentatively, we'll close it on January 31, 2019.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?

Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought about this.  It wasn't an issue the last 2 times I ran this but times change.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

And here, have some icons!

I'll start things off...

Stranger Things, BBQ

[personal profile] sholio 2018-12-15 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
By the Party's senior year of high school, it was simply accepted that the first Saturday after school let out was going to be the annual We Survived Another Year BBQ, held at the Byers-Hopper residence. (It had rotated between Joyce and Hopper's places for the first two years before the distinction stopped being meaningful.)

By now Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan had developed a tradition of their own, on the long drive back to Hawkins late Friday or early Saturday morning, of working out a betting pool on what sort of natural, supernatural, or cooking-related disaster would have befallen them all by the end of the day. It wasn't always related to the Upside Down. One year it was Joyce getting tipsy and accidentally setting fire to the picnic table. But there was always something.

Steve made sure the nailbat was in the trunk, just in case.

Iron Fist, Ward Meachum, "what's the point of having fuck-you money if you never say 'fuck you'?"

[personal profile] sholio 2018-12-15 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I completely failed at 3 sentences on this one.

---

It wasn't the first time Ward had thought about it. It wasn't even the first time, since his dad died, that he'd stood in a stationery store and stared at the sketchbooks and thought about picking one up. But then he'd remind himself that he had his hands full running Rand and there was no point in wasting time with a frivolous hobby.

(And if that little voice in his head sounded like Harold's, well, it wasn't even unusual enough to notice.)

But here he was, now, in a bookstore in Hokkaido, wandering around in vague boredom while Danny pored over manga that Ward couldn't read anyway. And there was a rack of sketchbooks, and this time, he admitted to himself -- searching and fearless moral inventory, right? -- that the real reason he'd never picked it back up again was because he was afraid he'd be terrible at it. In fact, after not having drawn anything for almost 20 years, he was almost certainly terrible at it. Which would mean that Harold was right all along.

"Except you know what, Dad?" he muttered to himself, causing an elderly lady to give him a glance and move away. "You're dead and I'm not, so fuck you. You don't tell me what to do anymore."

He picked out a nice leatherbound sketchbook and plopped it on the counter next to Danny's alarmingly growing stack of manga. "You know we're living out of backpacks, right?" he said when Danny came back with another pile.

"I'll read most of this tonight," was Danny's cavalier answer, which was probably true; Danny could tear through books and comics at an alarming rate no matter what language they were written in.

Danny didn't say anything at all about the sketchbook, though there was no way he could have failed to notice it, but on the way out of the store, he said casually, "I saw a place up the street that has art supplies. You know ... if you wanted to get any."

Egged on by Danny, Ward ended up with an expensive fountain pen, a box of pencils, and a small watercolor set. All of which he was probably going to be utterly abysmal at, plus he was going to have to cart this around all over Japan --

-- and there was the Harold voice again. No, Ward thought. No, Dad, you don't get to tell me what to do. Never again.

They got a late lunch, or sort of an early dinner, from a street vendor and took it to a park overlooking a canal. Danny sat crosslegged on the grass and read through his stack of manga (he was right, he probably was going to finish it tonight) while Ward opened up his sketchbook to the first crisp, blank page. And there he froze for a long time, paralyzed by indecision and fear and the bone-deep knowledge that he was going to fuck it up, until he took his new fountain pen and in his best private-school handwriting he neatly wrote FUCK YOU, DAD across the top of the page.

And then he opened up the watercolor set, and clumsily and inexpertly began to paint the sunset.

A Thing that Once Shone [Matt & Jessica]

“Not that I’m objecting, you just - you don’t seem like the cocoa type,” Matt says, when she puts the cup in his hand.

It’s when he takes a sip and his face changes that she just knows some smartass fancypants lawyer remark is about to follow, so-

“Save it, Murdock,” Jessica says, and sips her own cocoa, feeling the sweet burn of bailey’s slide down her throat, soothing the bruises they’d gathered, both inside and out.

From his box in the audience, Lord Peter thoughtfully studied the band churning out an exuberant swing number, bringing the usually stoic London crowd to fever pitch. It took another veteran to notice the things he noticed: the bassist's bloodshot eyes; the slightly glassy gaze of the drummer; the tight lines around the mouth of the otherwise youthful-looking pianist. Even had they not advertised themselves as a band of brothers, he would have seen, and known.

(I wrote that very quickly when I saw your absolutely irresistible prompt! I hope it suits.)

The Jedi order were pitiful fools. Acting as if lightsabers were some token of mastery over the Force, when all they represented was the ability to have a limb that could grasp and push buttons.

He conceded, however, that they had better sense than to set up their base on planets with giant flying dinosaurs that could come by and disrupt their preparations at a moment's notice.

“Lucy,” he groans out against her neck between kisses, regret in his voice even as his fingers dig harder into the soft skin at her shoulder, “we really shouldn’t. I’m much too old for you, and-”

“I’ve lived longer than you,” she says simply, and winds her fingers through that glorious hair, quieting his unease by the expedient method of pressing her mouth to his.

“I’m not going anywhere, Bruce,” she says, and means it - not when his attempts at flirting are inevitably awkward, not when he’s in the space between monster and man, not when he struggles and shies away from her touch.

In the end she’s surprised to realize she meant it, the spaces in her mind between honest and not are so tangled, so caught up against each other that sometimes they cross, and fray, and blur.

“I’m not going anywhere either, Nat,” he says once, when the distance in her eyes must give her away, when she’s let the facade drop and the red inside her bleeds through; she thinks maybe he even means it too, at least for now.
