Edith stood there in her wedding gown, as if rooted to the spot, watching the man she loved walk out of the church and more importantly, out of her life. She could see the looks of pity on the faces of the wedding guests, but when her eyes, in their desperate search for comfort, locked onto Mary's, she saw something unexpected. In that moment, she thought she could see compassion in her older sister's eyes, but then it was gone.
