My headcanon was pretty different too, so reading Atwood's was quite a bit of fun, even if I don't like her Penelope (as in, I wouldn't have tea with her) but I did quite like how she was written (as you say, the complexity of her characterization).
I still think my favorite part was the shift in the way I perceived the chorus in the final chapter. Gives me chills still.
