This is so true. If you define self-insert broadly as "are you imagining yourself in this character's place as you write" then probably ALL characters are self-insert. Or, to borrow from Dorothy Sayers's The Mind of the Maker, all characters are some aspect of their Creator incarnate.

Maybe that's overstating it...? I'm only a verrry hobbyist writer, myself...
