An Inordinate Fondness For Beetles

I've added a few more pictures of the Oxford Museum of Natural History to the gallery.  I'm just tickled to pieces by this.

and yes, I am working on Harold and Morgan.  The Lone Islands story arc is HARD and really just much ado about dialogue since I've been trying to strip most of the plot out.  So I sit and stare at things like the following and wonder if I should just chuck it all and write the end or meander my way through a story.

The Meryl Director gathered a blue-bound ledger from the table and stuffed it into her own satchel.  “Thank you for agreeing to increase Linch’s share of the tribute to Narnia.   Perhaps the addition will keep them out of our business a while longer.”

“Unlikely,” Linch said with a resigned humph.   “We will not hold Narnia back forever.  I think Florian will be gone by summer.”

“If you had kept Morgan from going there…” she began, then waved a hand and corrected herself.  “Oh, never mind.  Linch is certainly to be congratulated for Morgan seeing the opportunity in Narnia before the rest of us did.”

“And as we profit, so do you, my sister.  Eventually.”

Meryl  adjusted her satchel and Linch helped her into a heavy cloak.  “My concerns with Narnia remain,” she said.

Edmund tried to pretend that he was not listening avidly.  Sallowpad cocked his head to the side, attending as carefully.

“It and her rulers are very young.  And with no proven stability, of course.  Ten years will not undo the two hundred that preceded it.”

“You are impossible to please,” Linch retorted gruffly.  “You want stability in Narnia before investing, but expect things to stay as they have here?”

Edmund realized that this was the sort of conversation he could envision with his own siblings and felt another uncomfortable pang of longing for home.

“I’m always cautious about start ups and so are you and Morgan is the only reason we are there at all.”

“So it is we again, Meryl.”

Eventually,” Director Meryl replied, proving to Edmund she could deliver rejoinders as well as receive them.  She paused at the door.  “I shall be presenting the new numbers to the Governor on behalf of the Bankers tomorrow.  Do you wish to come?”

“Making love to politicians has always been Stanleh’s role.  And yours.”  Linch held the door open for her.

Hmmm I'm intrigued ... I think that this definetly needs a little bit to explain how this came about and will go :)

If you want to write the end then do so, but I'm happy with anything :) *sends magic tea to help the Muse sort its life out*

Hi,
I remember I promised to write sth more, but at the moment I have even less time then I absolutely need to do what I have to do, so at least till Wednesday I won't be able to fulfill my promise.
But, as you're writing new chapters right now, I just wanted to ensure you (I remember some remarks you've made which suggest that you're not that certain about that) that there are some people who really care about politics and - as a result - problems with taxation on Lone Islands. Therefore, it is expected that you'll keep to this subject, not - abandon that in favour of male-female relations.
A fragment shown above suggest that you are doing that indeed. If it's true (i.e. it's not the only part connected with the subject) - then I am very glad.
Best,
Krystyna

Thank you, Krystyna! I'm working at it. 15,000 words! It's going! Ever so slowly!

I must say, that for the first time I'm glad that writing a new chapter takes you considerable time. I'm at the end of what-I-was-supposed-to-do-till-Wednesday-and-of-which-deadline-luckily-was-postponed-till-Monday but I don't think I would manage if a next part of your story would appear in the meantime - I don't think I would constrain myself form reading it.
But since tomorrow I will be a free person once again, so - I'll be waiting.
Best,
Krystyna

I'm always glad to see any fragments you post. This one intrigues me. I want more context for it.

Added context would be good! The context is there! Just trying to fill in the pieces. Argh! thanks so much and Happy Mother's Day!

If you feel up to writing, I am certainly up to reading anything! I think this is all relevant. Ed and Morgan are so connected to their jobs/positions, so I think all this has impact on the relationship part of the story. With all the mentions lately about how impossible it would be for banker and king to be together I am interested to see how this all fits together.

Thanks!

Thank you! It's hard writing something so dysfunctional. The story is really about how they manage their mutual responsibilities, crushing expectation, and their utter inability to communicate about feelings into something that is actually a pretty solid, if unconventional, relationship.

The politics behind the Lone Islands is really rather fascinating. I think it's interesting because we really don't know how things were run when the Pevensies had ruled, and what changes occurred between then and the time of Caspian's visit. And so watching Edmund muddle his way through things and knowing how he felt when he returned 1300 years later makes for a very good read! Knowing how meticulous and detailed a Hoard of Bankers would likely be, I'm sure there has to be some mention of Harold the clerk somewhere in Linch's books by the time Caspian came to Narrowhaven.

I keep wondering what would it be like 1300 years later. Not many institutions last that long-- and realistically, I have to think that the Banking Houses are long gone as well and that the Bankers Alley has been razed and now filled with Calormene condominiums or something. But even that would be hard. Edmund is 13 years old and visiting his wife's home after 1300 years and he really doesn't want to know for certain what happened to her.

Oh, definitely meander. Love the snippets, but I still want to know _how_ we get to that ending.

I like this exchange! (Admittedly, I have only reached the end of Ch. 3 in "Harold and Morgan," but I get the gist of this). I think that seeing the considerations and manipulations of the banking houses is really important in a lot of ways; it establishes what their self-interests are, which may or may not be aligned to the interests of Narnia. It also shows that, powerful though Morgan may be, she is not the be-all, end-all at the House of Linch. There are others who can - and probably will try - to undo her recommendations or use her friendships with the Narnian monarchs against her (do they know about her relationship with Ed?)

And I completely agree with Autumnia! There would have to be mention of Harold in the books of the banking house - and what an interesting tale that would be for Caspian to learn about (although, knowing Edmund, he would never breathe a word about Morgan).

Well, you obviously have to keep reading! Thanks so much! I have had in my head a moment on the DT where Caspian tries to raise with Edmund about this past -- you've not gotten to that part in the story or read the massive spoilery thing I've posted here -- Acceptance of the Terms, but.. errr, right.. I'll just wait until you do.

I do have to keep reading, and I'm sorry I've been so absent of late. I've been swamped. That's really the simplest explanation. Hopefully it will stop soon. :)
