Dawn Treader, the movie -- I saw it

Yep.  I saw the film, tonight, at a special screening courtesy of the lovely folks at Grace Hill Media, @supertreader on Twitter.

I'm not going to say anything really here.  We've got a few weeks and I don't want to spoil anyone, but if you have questions or wish to know more, I can respond in comments.    SPOILERS IN COMMENTS!! (If there are any)

The film visually is gorgeous and I thought Will Poulter as Eustace and Ben Barnes reprising his role as Caspian were especially strong performances.  Some of the fan concern is groundless -- other concerns are very well founded and in fact were borne out in the film, in my opinion.

I'm not a book to film purist.  Different media, different audiences, different needs.  It is beautiful and I'm sure in 3D it will be stunning.

I m 90% positive? that when the new movies come out, and I watch the unfortunate scene, I ll cry.

I didn't cry. But, I did cringe and gasp at the utter stupidity of several (many) unfortunate scenes. There's one scene in particular involving Goldwater and Dragon Island that really, really bothered me a lot.

[identity profile] intrikate88.livejournal.com 2010-11-19 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw there were screenings going on at the theater the other day when my brother and I went to see Red. (Which, by the way, was everything I hoped for and more.) I'm looking forward to seeing VOTD, and so I'm glad to hear that you sound pretty positive about it, at least.

I'm not a book purist either; one of the best things my film minor taught me is that books are not movies and to treat one medium as another is sort of disrespectful to both. However, while I am all up for necessary adaptations, I will say that when I finally got around to watching Prince Caspian, I had about thirty minutes of paranoia that the medications had finally killed my memory, because I had no recollection of the castle raid scene, or Peter's massive attitude. Finally [livejournal.com profile] andi_horton was kind enough to inform me that those were movie additions, but it was somewhat unsettling.

Minor character SPOILERS!!!!!

Yeeeah.... and I actually am pretty negative about the film for this very reason. The same liberties that were taken with PC are taken here, with Edmund now reading Peter's emo lines. It's the same characterization with the same WT? feeling of disorientation. It's worse even as Edmund stood as the critic of Peter's behavior in PC and now it's repeated here, and worse. And Lucy... oh I so wish that the speculation of the original script that had been knocking around was wrong, but it wasn't.

Gah. I'm trying to be positive. Caspian, Eustace, and Drinian were terrific and Reep was great until the very end when they completely &**&!! that up too.

:DD I'm glad you enjoyed the movie - as you know, I'm pretty much fine with, uh, any changes. So long as Liliandil got some form of characterization and Lucy was awesome too. :D?

Liliandil was fine. I had no issues with her at all and in fact they beefed up her role nicely, replacing Ramandu entirely so she becomes the wise guide in his place. The the whole follow the blue star thing was lame, but that actual screen time for her was fine, in my opinion. As for Lucy, ...hmmm... well, she has plenty of Pirate Queen kick a moments. BUT.... BUT.... well, folks need to see it and decide for themselves. What little we see of Susan is also very positive.

autumnia: The Sea of Lilies (Dawn Treader (Sea of Lilies))

[personal profile] autumnia 2010-11-19 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Having read all the comments and taking the trailers into account, I don't think I'm that surprised that Edmund has become this movie's version of PC!Peter. Sigh. It's a bit disappointing that the film makers chose this route, but hopefully it won't be the make movie any less interesting to watch. Gah. I think I'm more concerned with the upcoming character assassinations that will surely flood the fanfic world once more people have seen it. Whatever happened to the wise and noble Kings of Old?

But, but.. Susan, tea and the Embassy. I think I'm going to rather enjoy watching that very brief mention. We can always pretend she said RAF instead of Navy! Or... perhaps the whole mention is Rat and Crow speak for something else entirely. :-)

And the dream sequence with the older Pevensies, I think I'll enjoy that too because at least there's a cameo for Susan and Peter both.

SPOILERS!!!

[identity profile] rthstewart.livejournal.com 2010-11-19 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Edmund gets plenty of action sequences balanced by way too many deer in the headlights moments. Jadis is actually in the film A LOT. Her presence permeates the film and yes, the ties to TLOTGK are there too. I think it's turning more into a seduction, which is interesting, as we see a shift from Jadis to the Green Witch.

Also, rather than Lucian, what we see is loads of alone time between Edmund and Caspian -- I foresee lots of slash in the future with EmoEdmund being comforted by noble Caspian. I had just sort of assumed that Edmund was mostly over this all and that having been treated to Peter's histrionics in PC and Edmund criticizing him for it, we would not see that revisited, but we do. Over and over. The Goldwater/Deathwater/Dragon Island scene is not merely a total assassination of Edmund's character, and inconsistent with both the book AND the prior film, but it robs him of the one truly great, heroic moment of the book. It's the very worse of film adaptations -- it is wildly inconsistent with the book and makes no sense in the film either.

I am not sure -- but I really think some of the problem was the quality of the acting of SK and GH. They did not strike me as up to the same standard as Ben Barnes -- who really pulls off a wonderful interpretation of Caspian and Will Poulter.

And Lucy... oh Lucy. The sword and knife wielding and arrow shooting was great. BUT..... The very first script supposedly had Lucy all WAAAHHH I'm not pretty and wishing that Caspian liked her when he's still pining for Susan and THAT IS THERE. It's RIGHT THERE.

I'm sounding so negative. Kids will love it. Those who liked emo Peter will probably love emoEdmund. It's gorgeous -- though the CGI quality is not of the same ilk as the overall design. Ben Barnes, Reep, Poulter, and Sweet as Drinian carry the film. Terrific relationship between Reep and Eustace too, even before the un-dragoning.

You know, btw, there is a screening in Time Square on Monday? @supertreader and rsvp@gracehillmedia.com -- there is probably room, they are still trying to fill the theater.

it depends. I don't find that film adaptations influence me except in my desire to FIX it. And boy will there be lots of bad Edmund characterizations to fix. And THIS is the biggest problem with the film -- it ignores both book Edmund and PC Movie Edmund. And THEN introduces a whole other new weakness in addition to the teen angst. If they are going to chuck the book at the window, couldn't they have managed better character continuity with the previous films?

It's funny -- the more I think about Lucy and Edmund, the worse it gets because it's sooo inconsistent even with the film PC. And it's frustrating because some things they got really, really right, including Eustace and Jadis' "greening" influence, and Caspian, and Reep until the very, very end. Some of it was improved upon, like the relationship between Reep and Eustace, and Liliandil. BUT...

I am so, so thankful that you previewed this for all of us - now I can go watch it prepared, and while I will still grit my teeth and groan over the horrible mistreatment of Edmund, at least it will not stun me and leave me completely flummoxed for the rest of the movie, waiting for something to change or an explanation to be made. Nor will I have to spend the rest of the movie whispering furiously with the twelve-year-old sitting next to me about how they utterly destroyed his character.

Both of which happened with LOTR and Faramir. Thankfully the 12yo was on the same furious page as I was.

Eustace is my favorite character in VDT anyway, so I will try to focus on him, and ignore what they do with Edmund and Lucy. Thank you again for the forewarning!

A pastor friend of mine saw a screening last night and she loved it and she is very, very attuned to the redemptive and journey messaging of the Chronicles. But, she liked movie Peter as symbolic of the struggle of faith. Also, she really liked Peter and Edmund's boots. So, yeah, I can see that (well, not the boots), just as see I can see how it was changed to create drama and that evidently nobility of character is boring. BUT, why repeat the identical story arc for Edmund?

As I just told Meto, what is most frustrating is how certain things are so very, very right -- especially Eustace. You will not disappointed. It is the very best that a good adaptation can be -- taking something like Eustace pulling up the pine tree for the mast and changing it something else that works wonderfully with the story. I'm perhaps being unduly critical -- I loved TTT but loathed everything that was down with Faramir and I feel very much the same way again -- that it is an indicia of lazy and unimaginative storytelling and in this case the error is compounded by ignoring the growth we saw of Edmund in PC the film.

From the sounds of everything, I WANT ANDREW ADAMSON BACK NOW PLS.
Directors that come into a series late sometimes feel like they have to change characters to their own vision, which ends up causing a lack of continuality.

I'm scared to watch it.

But I really, really want to!!!

You said it's visually appealing, and that's good, but how far did they stray from the story's plot? I know things have to be changed, but was it an awful lot?

Also, please tell me that the rumour about Lucy and Caspian was JUST a silly rumour... it was, right?

Hello! Are you over here too? Did you see the chapter.. errr, 3 update? I wasn't sure. Anyway, it's up.

As for the film, SPOILERS AHEAD!!

The element of the journey to recover the Lords remains. Eustace's journey also remains. Reep's journey remains, sort of.

They have added HUGE amounts of stuff to the plot. There are the 7 swords for the 7 lost Lords and they must be found and placed on Aslan's Table and there is a green mist that takes human sacrifices by the boat-ful, and Jadis exerts a powerful influence throughout the film. What is absent entirely is the ideas that they most leave a crew member behind at the End of the World -- which ends up really making Reepicheep seem more like he's going on a lark of an adventure rather than a sacrifice he was always intended to make. The journeys to the Islands are compressed -- which is fine, in my opinion.

As for Lucy and Caspian -- as I saw their first scene together, and why it bothered me, Lucy tries to flirt with Caspian and he immediately mentions Lucy's beautiful sister, feeding into Lucy's anxiety through over half the film, for she wants to be the pretty one and isn't. It provides background to the Spell book, yes, but the problem is that Lucy's preoccupation continues after Coriakin's Island. She acts dishonestly and continues to do so.

Unfortunately, the post and comments had me using my wide and varied vocabulary of foreign swearwords. If you separate the book from the film, is the film that bad? (You may ignore the films of LWW & PC if you so wish)

[identity profile] keeperofqkeys.livejournal.com 2010-12-12 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I took the Harry Potter approach to seeing this one.... Haven't read the book in ages and ages. So I only noticed the really big things wrong (like Eustace shouldn't have been a dragon any more when the sea serpent attacked, etc.)

All in all though, I really enjoyed the movie. I loved the friendship between Reep and Eustace. It was fantastic! Probably one of the best parts of the movie.

I didn't see a lot of the Caspian/Ed thing. I felt there were some little moments of Lucian, more just in their physical interaction than anything else (and I had really hoped she'd have stolen a kiss from him at the end; I think it would have gone a long way to squash the Suspian shippers...)

Also! I had a hard time not squeeing when it mentioned Susan going to that luncheon! I was like "OH! OH! Mrs. Caspian!!! YESSSS!!!!!!"

And then I had a fifteen minute giggling fit at the least appropriate point in the film, when the sea serpent was attacking.... Because the whole thing about the mist turning into what you feared, and Edmund thinking of the serpent. But my first thought?

STAY-PUFT MARSHMALLOW MAN!!!!

Would have completely changed the tone of the movie, but it would have been HYSTERICAL!
