Three Sentence Ficathon 2022

This post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2!  Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.  (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

"What do you mean, you can't? The day we met, you picked the lock with a frelling fork!" John hissed in horrified disbelief.

Aeryn shrugged, although he couldn't exactly see what she was doing, since they were bound back to back, in what John insisted on calling a paddywagon: what Aeryn knew was that it was large, square, black, and smelled like three years of stale urine.

"I don't see the point," she replied, with a hint of impatience; "D'Argo knows where we went and Chiana saw us get picked up--we'll be bailed out in less than an arn."

But the truth was that she had no hope of picking the binders on their hands: the day they'd met, she had guessed the administrative reset code to the prison cells once she'd used the fork to pry to cover off the terminal. He had been so impressed by her tech skills (as limited as they were: she was a Prowler Pilot, not a tech) that she had never felt the need to tell the truth about it.

"What's that phrase you have, something about hauled up a post?"

"No, no, hoist by your own petard," he said, and she could just imagine the way he was cocking his head in amusement. "Why do you ask?"

"No reason..."

Of course, they'd get bound together. That's John and Aeryn, agents of chaos and snark. This little snippet has made me miss the show all over again. Well done.

"This isn't how I pictured our first date going," Stiles says as he looks down at the chain around his wrists that connects straight to Derek.

"You mean kidnapped by hunters?" Derek shifts closer so he can bumps their shoulders together. "Sounds like our usual thing."

Stiles snorts despite himself and turns to give Derek a smile. "Yeah. I guess I can't image going through this with anyone else."

Of course something like this would happen to them - good to see they’re happy to get out of this jam together!

Umineko, Shannon & Kanon & Beatrice

[personal profile] ernest 2022-01-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Shannon and Kanon both raise their left hands as Beatrice lifts the pipe with the golden butterfly perched on the end. The sparks are already starting to fade to little more than the coffee stain of a birthmark, but still unmistakably a butterfly, and the destinies of all three of them are unmistakably linked, have been from the start.

“The first circle shall represent the release from bonds such as the ties of obligation and inescapable fate, which are rather more difficult to break than some silly chain across a door, don’t you think?” Beatrice laughs charmingly as they plot together.

thank you! there are many different kinds of chains in umineko, and while some of them are physical chains to make locked-room mysteries, there are also magic chains to keep someone trapped by their mind or circumstances, and even more metaphorical chains keeping characters connected to all the people they have been in the past or might become, and it was a LOT of fun to work with all those different meanings.

'the destinies of all three of them are unmistakably linked, have been from the start.' kihihi this was written by someone who's seen the heart of umineko. aaah and i love beatrice comparing the ties of obligation and inescapable fate to the trivial chain locking a door. the chain of illusions can only be broken by illusions. the locked room is a metaphor.

i sure have! that moment with the butterfly marks is great because it's subtle if you don't know what it's saying and extraordinarily obvious once you do. i was so fixated on the themes of obligation and inescapable fate from the moment that magic circle was introduced, and it really did help me unravel the identity and motive of the culprit (though it tripped me up for a bit and i really wanted it to be natsuhi!) and sometimes a chain is just a chain, but even then, this is umineko so it works on multiple levels.

Alex Rider, Alex & Yassen

[personal profile] wingedflight 2022-01-19 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
"You won't shoot me," says Alex, which is a confident statement considering the fact that he is currently staring down the barrel of a gun.

"I won't kill you," the assassin corrects, and he snaps a cuff around Alex's wrist before the kid can react.

The other end is just as quickly locked around Yassen's own wrist, easily ensuring the little spy won't have a chance to go off and wreck any more of Yassen's plans; or at least, so Yassen thinks until he sees the grin slowly creeping across Alex's face.

Person of Interest, Root/Shaw - Chains

[personal profile] swirlsngirls 2022-01-20 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Shaw let out an exasperated sigh. She could already imagine Reese’s laugh when he found out she and Root had been compromised by a thirteen-year-old.

Their number, who by all appearances seemed to be an innocent young girl with bright eyes and a father who’d gotten into some trouble with a local gang, had turned out to be a member of the gang and the true perpetrator of the crime.

Shaw and Root had been sent by Finch to protect her and secure the house while Reese tracked down the father, and they’d unknowingly interfered with the girl’s plans. They’d agreed to a game of hide-and-seek, and within seconds of closing their eyes the girl had somehow managed to crudely tie them to their chairs using a long iron chain she’d gotten from Machine-knows-where, facing back-to-back, and escaped out the front door. She’d even had the foresight to remove and crush both of their earpieces, a cheeky smile on her face the whole time.

(Shaw was beginning to hate children.)

It wasn’t like she couldn’t get out of the chains. It was just embarrassing, that a trained government operative and an assassin had been given the slip by a literal teenager. She twisted in the chains, trying to see if she could reach out with her hand to break part of it over the edge of her chair.

“Root, help me out here, will you? I’m not planning on being chained up in here forever.”

“I wouldn’t mind. It’s pretty cozy.” Root answered, ever the advocate of inappropriately-timed flirting. “Plus”, she added conspiratorially, “I bet we could have plenty of fun with these in our free time.” Shaw rolled her eyes even though she knew Root couldn’t see them and directed Root to the part of the chain she should pull. Root got pulled it taut and together, they moved it in a sudden jerking motion and broke one of the links against Shaw’s chair.

Shaw untangled the chains from around her and let them clatter to the floor. “Maybe after we track down our number.”

(i’m looking back at this and wow that was a lot more than i intended to write)

"We've . . . been in worse situations." Sam said, tugging in frustration at the metal unfortunately securely wrapped around his wrists - and his brother's.

"Have we, Sammy?" Dean demanded, his shoulders pressing back firmly against Sam's. "Have we really? And stop moving, damn it, this is hard enough without you squirming." he snapped, and Sam opened his mouth to protest - Dean had certainly not been still - when he realised the metal he could feel sliding along his wrist was a thin bar - definitely not part of the chains.

Sam shut up and held still and hoped Dean could get the damn manacles off, whatever it was he was using.

Natasha might have died with the delicate chain he’d given her around her neck, but she'd left a chain around his heart that he didn’t think would ever loosen. Clint sometimes wondered if there would come a day when he didn’t ask himself repeatedly what she’d think. Would he ever not run through a plan and consider the things she’d taught him without the heartache of not hearing her say them out loud.
