Three Sentence Ficathon 2022

This post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2!  Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.  (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Oh, poor Susan. The contrast between the happiness in Aslan's Country and the thinking of it as her time 'not yet come' and Susan's grief and feeling they couldn't stay is nicely balanced.

I love this! The natural way that Jamie has fit in and how he's the one to bring it up and then they just go with it.

After all, for all his complaints, he's always been happy to teach Jamie a thing or two, and Keeley's perfectly fine with being caught in the middle.
Spot on characterization. :D

Great job! Thank you so much for picking and filling my prompt!

[This got a little long ;;; here it goes anyway]

"You've got be fucking kidding me."
Tim stared at the Pokémon in disbelief. Pichu had hidden behind the wastepaper basket in the far corner of Harry's office. His ears were still peeking out.
"No swearing, young man." Harry's voice, never quite-serious, only managed a half-hearted reprieve.
Tim crossed his arms.
"Aw, come on. Just look at the little guy."
Harry's Pikachu had joined Pichu in his hiding place, and was now gently coaxing it out. Pikachu prattled on, making little motions towards the other side of the office, where Tim and Harry were sitting. Pichu made the tiniest step from behind the paper basket, big pointy ears moving nervously.
"I, uh. Found him behind a dumpster. In a dark alley. While canvassing a very dangerous neighborhood," Harry offered.
"You went out and caught one in the fields outside the city, didn't you." It wasn't really a question.
"Okay, fine. I went out and caught one in the fields outside the city. You know Pichus are pretty rare, right? Hard to catch, too."
The two Pokémon had now left the safety of the paper basket behind. Pikachu was slowly making his way across the office, followed by a cautious Pichu. Each step Pikachu took, he turned back to make sure Pichu was following.
Tim sighed.
"I told you I didn't - why did you - that's not how it's supposed to work," he finally managed.
"Well - yeah, I guess it isn't. Do you want me to release him?"
By now, the two Pokémon had made their way across the office. Pikachu hopped onto the desk and Pichu tried to follow, but didn't quite make it. Tim rushed to catch it and - to both his and Pichu's surprise - he actually did. He held the Pokémon in his hands, and the two stared at each other for a moment.
"I - uh. What?" Tim asked.
He set Pichu down on his father's desk and sat back in his chair. Pichu looked around, then turned back to Tim with a tiny squeak. He took a leap and landed on Tim's lap.
"Do you want me to release him?" Harry repeated.
Tim considered his father's offer for a moment. Pichu looked up, made a happy little noise. His fur was soft and -- damn it.
"I guess... we don't have to do things the usual way."
Harry smiled. "Never works for me, anyway."

Aww, this was lovely. I really like that Peggy could really sense the differences in him and I could definitely picture him telling her everything immediately as well as taking the blame for his actions.

The grief, the pain they had both endured was not gone - but it was shared, carried together, and made easier by love.
That made me smile, especially the way it was worded. No, all their problems are not gone but at least they're not alone. :D

Wonderful job! Thank you for picking and filling my prompt!

I like that there is an initial awkwardness and then they fall into themselves and Peggy is slowly accepting her reality. It probably really did feel a little too much a dream come true.

Great job! Thank you for picking and filling my prompt. :D

The A List, Mia

[personal profile] tellshannon815 2022-02-09 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Mia sometimes wonders how things would have been different if, that first summer on Peregrine Island, instead of distancing herself from camp outcast Midge Rayne while basking in the adoration of the likes of Kayleigh and Jenna, she’d been open about the fact that she and Midge had been childhood friends.

Maybe she wouldn’t have ended up becoming the camp queen bee, maybe a couple of them would have looked down on her, but Mia now understands how superficial all these considerations truly are; she’d looked down on Alex and Harry when she first met them as well, but now she realises they’re the best friends she has.

If Mia had included Midge among their crowd, hadn’t hidden their shared history from the others, none of them would have lost their memories of that year of their life, and Midge would have still been there with them today.

[Miraculous Ladybug] plums (not pruned)

[personal profile] alexseanchai 2022-02-09 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It takes a minute or two for the internet to recognize the young woman wearing a dark blue blazer and magenta blouse, her chignon tucked under the chin of Adrien Agreste in his first public statement since the deaths of Gabriel Agreste and Nathalie Sancoeur—but it takes that long only because the cut and embroidered details make this outfit plainly a matched set with the deep plum and black that young Monsieur Agreste is wearing with a silver necktie, and (though all official remarks to date have been "no comment") the rumors started the moment the Ladyblog posted the sentence In unrelated news, condolences from the Ladyblog team to our friend Adrien on the tragic loss of his father and almost-stepmother as part of the caption accompanying the video in which Ladybug and Chat Noir announced the end of the Shadowmoth threat by transforming on camera into new Butterfly and Peacock superheroes.

"Ohhh, Pajama Girl," says one junior designer at the probably-soon-to-be-renamed Gabriel Fashions, and is promptly shushed by three others whose focus is less on their own work and more on their employer on TV saying "in recognition of the difficult, thankless, and until now nonstop efforts that Ladybug and Chat Noir and their team have put forth to protect Paris, we intend to pay each of them an honorarium of not less than forty thousand Euro for each year of their service as superheroes."

A fifth designer lets out a low whistle at the sum; a sixth says "I mean, they deserve that and more"; the second mutters "If we want to talk about not deserving—" and is immediately silenced by the third clapping a hand to his mouth; "Clearly you weren't paying attention this week," says the fourth while glaring at the second (after the press conference has ended and before anyone can ask if this means the rumors are true), "when Madame Dupain-Cheng took both those suits from concept to final fittings without any assistance from anyone except for someone to hold the pins when she was being fitted, so, you know, I don't care if she's only getting the job because she's his fiancée, she's going to be a better Chief Creative Officer than anyone in this room!"

BtvS, Xander/Anya

[personal profile] tellshannon815 2022-02-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet offers Xander an alternative to becoming his “bride”, and Xander initially thinks the offer is the obvious choice; considering the other option would have been becoming Sweet’s queen, he felt that being subjected to the curse of bursting out randomly into song for 24 hours longer than everyone else was preferable. At least this way, he got to stay in Sunnydale, and it gave him the option of the happy future with Anya that he had initially hoped that Sweet would show him.

Anya jokes about whether he’ll burst into a ballad, some kind of rock number, or whether he’ll do something different altogether and launch into a rap; Xander pretends to laugh along, fearing that instead he will sing something that reveals more to her of his fears regarding marriage.

The Silmarillion, Maglor, Daeron

[personal profile] ladybrooke 2022-02-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
“I am bound to follow my King’s words, and he does not wish any among his people to claim friendship with the Sons of Fëanor,” Daeron said at the feast, ending all of Fingolfin and Maedhros’ hopes in a few words.

Maglor does not have time to consider his own disappointment, rooted in Daeron’s roles as a rival and one of the few who seems to understand the all consuming love Maglor holds for music, before Daeron smiles crookedly while tapping his fingers against his flute.

“If the day should come that matters with Morgoth are settled for you and your brothers, I believe the King could be convinced to allow me more contact with you for musical practice,” Daeron says with hope in his voice.

Pawn to Queen (Chronicles of Narnia)

[personal profile] edenfalling 2022-02-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
In England, Susan is no queen: she cannot make or dissolve laws, dispense justice or grant mercy, collect or remit taxes, declare war or make peace, sign treaties or raise tariffs; no trappings of power are hers, and instead this world consigns her to play a silly schoolgirl who will grow to be a decorative nonentity, of note only for the children she may have or the background support she may give an enterprise organized and directed by and for the benefit of men.

She refuses to dwell on the loss.

Susan will take the rules England sets down and play by them to win, play so well that no one will outflank her or stand in her path; and once she triumphs she will be a queen once more in truth (though perhaps not in law), and can at last overturn this stifling, tilted board to build something better, truer, deeper in its place.

It's A Sin, Ash

[personal profile] tellshannon815 2022-02-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The ginger cat had first appeared outside the Pink Palace a few weeks after Ritchie died; Ash would arrive home from a long day at work where he was expected to plaster on a happy face, unable to explain to anyone exactly what Ritchie had meant to him, and he’d find the cat waiting for him at the door.

As Roscoe began spending more time with his family in the hope of rebuilding their relationship, as Jill became more involved in raising awareness of sexual health, Ash found himself looking forward to the cat’s visits, stocking up on food for it, allowing it to curl up on the sofa with him watching mindless quiz shows.

Ash didn’t know the cat’s story, didn’t know how it came to be frequently wandering in his neighbourhood, but he knew the cat had come to him when he needed it most, that they could provide comfort to each other.

[personal profile] edenfalling 2022-02-10 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
"How unexpected to meet you here," a terribly familiar voice said from the doorway of Elderflower Books, and I looked up from stacking the latest edition of the New Salon to see Lark silhouetted by the midday sun, idly twirling her ivory pipe between her fingers.

I still felt that conditioned pull toward her, but this time it was countered by the bright clarity of immediate danger and I heard myself say, dryly, "Given that I have been employed here since autumn, and further that I am quite sure you have been aware of that fact for nearly the total period of that employment, I find your choice of words somewhat astonishing -- indeed, one might almost call them unexpected."

"Ah Jemis, I have missed you," Lark said, and smiled like a razor caressing a throat.
