What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

Snaaaaacky. I love this! It is so sweet! (And also heartbreaking, as almost everything is with these two.)

Steve was always quieter than most, Peggy knows, but the quiet he carries with him now is different - heavier, the product of loss, and grief almost past bearing, and too many fights, and trauma that he should not have tried to carry alone - should not have had to carry alone. She knows as well that it was partly his own doing - he had told her everything when he had first appeared at her door, exhausted and heartsick and time traveling from 2018 - but it does not make her love him less. She understands all too well the impulse to take everything on her own shoulders; it is a trait they have always shared. They also are best at sharing their burdens with one another, which is one of many reasons she loves Steve beyond reason.

Now, months after he came back to her, dancing in his arms in their own living room, there is comfort in the silence. The grief, the pain they had both endured was not gone - but it was shared, carried together, and made easier by love.

I love every version of these two post-Endgame. This is so lovely!

"It's a key," Parker explains, "so all you have to do when you want to log into one of Hardison's systems, or any system he's got control of, is plug it in to whatever you've got and then let it do the talking to assure him that you're okay."

Eliot held the small device in his hands, genuinely touched for a moment about the trust that the little thing held in its silicon, before his brain caught up to the situation.

"If Parker can explain it to me, that means she's gotten hers long before I—Dammit, Hardison!"

Something about traveling with these kids makes Han feel very old, and he’s not even that much older.

Sure, the princess is pampered and the farmboy can be painfully naïve, but they’ve each lost their homes in a pretty horrifying way, so it’s not like they’re strangers to hardship, and they face it with the same dauntless idealism. That’s the thing, though, they’re too young to have lost what they have, but they don’t ever give up, not for long, they just fight to make the star sector a better place, and they shouldn’t have had to make the choices that they have.

thank you! i love edmund and his righteous anger -- yes, he takes it a bit too far, but 'thou, nature, art my goddess' is a banger and contains zero lies.

At a market stall in Calormene, Edmund comes across a knife made of no material he recognizes, be it metal or stone or glass. It looks more like starlight, or smoke, or even dreams, and the merchant says it can cut a path to other worlds. He nods quietly and purchases it without even haggling for the price.

Claudius never used to laugh too much before Gertrude came to Elsinore – it wasn’t princely, it wasn’t dignified, and if either his parents or his brother bothered to ask what was so funny, then seven times out of ten it would be deemed too vulgar or common. Anyway, it was better to escape notice, but the thing about Gertrude is that she always notices the people around her and makes them feel welcome and appreciated with an easy queenly grace, has done since she was a girl.

She does it so naturally and unthinkingly that he’s never found a good way to thank her and say how very much it’s meant to him but tonight, walking his fingers up under the hem of her wedding dress, whispering in her ear to ask what she wants, and offering a few suggestions of her own to make her blush, he thinks for the first time that he has a chance of coming close.

thank you! it's been fun to dip my feet back into the star wars fandom, it's been a few years but i still love these stories a lot

Star Wars is one I always come back to as well. It was one of my first fandoms (if you call a kindergartener swinging around imaginary lightsabers and making up bedtime stories about Jedi for her younger brother a fandom) and will always be close to my heart. And you beautifully captured some of my favorite things about it here.

I know very little about Hamlet, but I love this! Thank you :)

thank you! versions of the play where claudius and gertrude truly love each other just makes the tragedy of him killing his brother, her husband, so much more delicious.

While Marcille did her best not to puke, Chilchuck kept poking his slice of Barometz pie, fascinated with jiggling fruit that tasted like meat, and spoke: "It's funny, Laois, out of all of us you know the most about monsters and cooking, but no-one else could have ruined dinner like this. No way you are cooking again the next time Senshi gets sick."

Notes: In the manga, the party eventually encounters a Barometz or Vegetable Lamb of Tartary. The fruit looks like a lamb and tastes like meat in this canon. While you could probably make a great meat pie from it, treating it like a sweet fruit pie probably leads to disaster.

Two days and a half after Martinaise, once they eventually run out of excuses to stick around and Kim is left to rest alone in his flat, he gasps for breath like a diver who, his tanks kaput, swam up some forty metres on the miracle of decompressing oxygen alone and has now broken the ocean’s surface, and struggles to believe what fresh air tastes like. Lieutenant Double-Yefreitor Harry Du Bois is all-enveloping and ever in motion, unsounded, unfathomable, hungry, sacred – having reached at last the safety of the shore, salt still on his skin, Kim Kitsuragi is shaken by a shiver.
The blue depths are ever so tempting.

“Tomorrow,” Benedick promises, “I will devise thee brave punishments for him.” He knows how much it hurts Don Pedro to dole out retribution in the mildest circumstances, and so much more so when he half-believes that he should also bend under a heavy weight for what has been done to the innocent Hero, but especially when the brother he dearly wanted to trust again turned out to be the author of all.

Benedick will willingly take on that burden for his friend, in place of the duel to which he challenged the count Claudio for Beatrice’s sake; it’s the least he owes her.

“Oh Lu…” Susan says the first time she’s asked, “No, you’re still just a kid, you don’t need to cover yourself in makeup to make people pay attention.”

She doesn’t know what to make of the heartache in her sister’s voice, so it only makes her rally, “I know that, I could manage that with a bare face the first time around, but I just… Susan, I want to be like you.”

She sighs, and finally says, “One year, then we’ll start with the basics,” but by the time the year is out Lucy has felt for the third time what it means to be a Queen, while Susan has not, and she does not ask to learn again.

She is taller than most women, but then she was never going to be a perfect specimen, all cobbled together from spare parts as she is, no matter how meticulously they were chosen. She has an Adam’s apple, but a woman’s heart, and a fascination with flames.

Galatea names herself something that has nothing to do with a father who rejected and abandoned her without bothering to learn anything about her first.

ahhh, this is a terrific bit of lore. that last sentence especially is wonderful!
