Three Sentence Ficathon 2022

This post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2!  Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.  (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

FF7, Zack, Cloud, Aerith and Reno

[personal profile] raisedbymoogles 2022-02-04 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe if Zack had had the change come upon him before - before Nibelheim, and the five years after - he would have turned into something more domesticated. A Labrador, maybe. He acted so much like a friendly dog (especially around Aerith, with whom he was playful and attention-seeking and infinitely gentle) that even Cloud almost forgot his friend had fallen into the form and soul of a wild creature. He remembered the day a young man in a suit had sauntered into Aerith's church one day and Zack roused himself immediately, fixing uncanny violet eyes on the stranger with a low, rolling growl of warning. He cast a glance at Aerith - she was outwardly calm, even smiling, but she wasn't scolding Zack, and that probably meant she'd tensed up when the man entered into the room and only Zack could pick up on it. She knew this man, and wasn't happy about his presence, and when Cloud took a second look he could guess why.

"Down, Fido," the stranger said, bemused and seemingly not at all afraid. "Hey, princess, you pick up a Kalm Fang as a pet?" Cloud got to his feet, reaching back to grasp Zack's sword, and the redhead's eyebrows shot up. "Oh, we got two guard dogs, here. And me with no doggy treats."

"I don't remember inviting you to the picnic anyway," Aerith sniffed, prim and disapproving and clearly getting ready to bolt for the nearest exit.

"You heard her. Get lost," Cloud ordered, projecting all the cold hard menace he could into his voice, but even his best efforts paled in comparison to Zack, who snarled and stalked forward. As he moved the earth rippled underneath him, responding to him like no other wolf or wolf-like monster, proof that whatever else Zack was now, he hadn't lost access to magic.

But he wasn't the only one, and their experiences had put some wild, sharp edges on Cloud too. Pulling the sword forward and settling into the stance Zack had taught him back when he was still human, Cloud prepared to fight alongside his lupine friend.

(Zack's case of lycanthropy has more to do with medieval conceptions of werewolves than modern ones, as outlined in this video.)

Any light and any color can be found or made from what already exists and he just needs to teach himself to see – sometimes that means working late into the night in a darkened studio, or changing his distance from the canvas and letting his eyes unfocus, or taking another swallow of beer. Other times, it takes a quietly observant woman who couldn’t always concentrate, to take him apart and put him back together in red dashes and yellow commas, and the only way he can tell her what that means to him is by exploring the light she catches on his blank page.

Even so, George misses a lot, and continually wants to begin something new.

Thank you for prompting! Not going to lie, this prompt was floating in my head for well over a week while I tried to figure out how to fill it in only 3 sentences and I'm not entirely sure I won't expand to a one shot in the future.

The gashes from the lion’s claws throbbed with a pain Aravis had never felt before, and the blood soaking through her tunic made it stick painfully to her back, rubbing over her wounds with Hwin’s every step, though the horse tried to be gentle; tears fell down Aravis’ cheeks, and she roughly brushed them away with her forearm, only to pull her tunic across her wounds again.

She gritted her teeth and grimaced, blinking away her tears, and she saw a hut in the distance; it was a modest dwelling, and it stood in a pool of light, light so bright that between it and her tears, the image in front of her became hazy and indistinct, and she thought she saw a city and a castle rising beyond the hut, and she whispered to Hwin to gallop faster, ignoring the pain in her back that flared anew as Hwin changed her gait.

She was coming home; it was a home she had never been to before, but she knew it was hers.

Kojiro looked up from the bar to see who'd just walked in, and nearly choked on nothing to see Adam standing there, studying the menu with a slight smirk on his face.

Kojiro rounded the bar and crossed his arms over his chest—Adam might be the better skater, but one-on-one and with Kojiro's size advantage, he could take him. "Get the hell out of my restaurant before I tie you up and pitch you out on your ass."

Adam threw back his head and laughed. "Careful, Joe. Don't threaten me with a good time. Now do tell, how's the veal parmigiana?"

"Maki-chan?" Jinpachi blinked; he'd thought Makishima had left for the airport already. He wasn't supposed to be standing on the other side of the hotel room door. "What are you doing here?"

Makishima ran a hand through his hair. He looked...nervous? That was strange. "I just had some loose ends I wanted to tie up before I left for England."

"What do you—"

Makishima kissed him, and Jinpachi's brain crashed like a bicycle taking a corner too fast.

Maki-chan was kissing him. Maki-chan was kissing him.

Jinpachi jumped on him, throwing his arms around Makishima's neck and taking them both into the wall.

"Congratulations, now can you keep it down?" Arakita shouted, his voice half-muffled by a pillow. "Some of us are trying to sleep!"

"Shut the fuck up, Arakita," Jinpachi snapped, and then he turned back to using his mouth for much more important things.

"My son, Adrian," the count said, setting his hand on the shoulder of quite literally the most beautiful boy Trevor had ever seen. "I trust he meets your approval, Lord Belmont?"

Trevor's father took a sip from his crystal tumbler and sighed. "It doesn't matter whether he meets my approval. What matters is whether he's willing to marry a Belmont in order to bridge the rift between our families once and for all."

Adrian's golden gaze skipped over to Trevor, sweeping over him with a shocking intensity. "Yes, I am."

Trevor's father set the tumbler down with a clack of finality. "Then it's settled. When they're twenty-one, they shall wed."

And just like that, Trevor's future was set in stone: that beautiful boy would one day be his husband.

Aww, I love how Hwin tries to be gentle for Aravis's sake, and how Aravis feels like Anvard will be home before she ever really gets there. It's a good ending for them, and fits so well with canon, too.

Their greatest challenge yet

[personal profile] elementalraven 2022-02-04 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
“So I don’t normally suggest this,” Jonathan tells the young, dark haired girl before him, “but you could go for a bit of a statement, something dramatic- you are a literal queen after all.”

The girl, Susan, or Queen Susan now, looks at him with apprehension but also curiosity, which Jonathan takes as a good sign.

“What kind of statement?”

Jonathan smiles widely and feels his stomach flutter with excitement.

“I’m not sure dresses fit me all that well,” the young girl in front of him tells him, biting her lip nervously, “at least not the really big and fancy ones, I just think it would be hard to move around in. Maybe you should save that for Susan.”

Yes, the older girl; Tan is already quite excited to start on her wardrobe, and all of their wardrobes really- it’s not every day you get to dress royalty after all.

But first this one.

“Don’t worry darling,” he says, “I’ll get you plenty of clothes that are more comfortable and suitable for outdoors activities, I just want to make sure you also have something for more formal occasions. Does that sound alright?”

Lucy smiles tentatively, and Tan’s mind runs through endless possibilities.

“Well it’s got great bones,” Bobby says to himself as he walks through the giant castle, “and a lot of furniture of good quality laying around, it just needs to all be put together.”

He doesn’t have his crew here, which is a… hurdle, but what he’s seen of the Narnians so far is that they seem eager to help. With that in mind, Bobby approaches a group of Dwarves that has been closely watching his every move.

Yes, he’ll make it work.

“Your siblings tell me you’ve had a difficult time forgiving yourself.”

Karamo sits in one of the many rooms of Cair Paravel, the boy king called Edmund in front of him. He has his work cut out for him with all of them, he thinks – four children turned monarchs overnight –, but the second youngest in particular seems to need his help.

Edmund looks at him, too sad and too wise for his age, and says: “I don’t know how. I betrayed them all; they could have died because of me.”

“I know it is difficult,” Karamo says softly, “but we all make mistakes and we all have a past. What matters is that you learn, and that you grow, and it seems like you’ve already done a lot of that.”

Edmund seems hesitant, but that’s alright: Karamo will take his time.

“I don’t really know a lot about cooking,” Peter says.

Antoni looks at the young boy tasked with the responsibility of a country, one he already seems to feel the weight of, and wants to help him relieve at least some of that burden.

“That’s fine,” Antoni says, “I don’t want you to be a great chef, or even to be a cook really, I just think that knowing how to feed them could be a nice and easy way to show your subjects, and your siblings, how much you care. ”

At this Peter brightens and Antoni smiles to see it.

“Now,” he starts, the boy before him paying careful attention, “what I was hoping to do is two things: one, figure out a few quick and easy food options that a variety of Narnians can eat, so no one gets left behind, and two, perhaps learn to prepare a small meal that you could enjoy with you siblings. How does that sound?”

I LOVE THIS! I really wish I could see Susan's big dramatic hair reveal! And Tan is so considerate of Lucy and the fact that she's still a child and wants to be able to move around. Bobby is going to have SO MUCH TO DO oh my god lol. But the Dwarves are definitely the best allies!

And Karamo's conversation with Edmund <3 So sad and totally needed.

It kind of cracked me up to imagine Antoni teaching the High King to cook, but it fits so well!

All the voices here shine through so clearly, it's adorable <3 Thanks for filling this so beautifully!

I'm really glad you liked it! They deserve some guidance at least ;)

And yeah, Antoni and Peter kind of cracked me up as well, but I thought it would fit with Peter taking care of everyone, and I kind of like the idea of Peter occasionally cooking up something for the four of them to eat together xD

(and yes, as always, Bobby is more than pulling his weight, lol)

The twenty-first century was strange in some ways, Edmund thought as he and Susan strolled through the halls of McKinley, but not that strange. The young people here still behaved in much the same way they had in the 1940s - teasing, raucous, sometimes cruel, sometimes joyous. They were less in awe of authority, which Edmund thought a good thing on the whole. It was, after all, partly because of the cruel actions of adults that he and Susan were here.

“This one,” Susan said, stopping in front of a door. Edmund pulled himself from his thoughts and looked through the clear glass into the classroom; there were numerous students waiting on an instructor, including a stunning blonde girl who was as immaculately dressed as Susan, a tiny dark-haired girl who made herself the center of attention despite her size, and a blond boy who reminded Edmund amazingly of Corin - not so much in looks, but in his aura and mannerisms.

And slightly off to the side and in the back, the young man they had come for, and his boyfriend.

“He looks like us, you know,” Edmund said quietly to his sister.

Susan nodded. “Yes, he really does,” she agreed softly. “We’ll have to do our best to be our younger selves, Edmund. We don’t want to frighten him.”

“Well, considering that all we know is that Blaine is your great-grandson, and not how he comes to be, we can hardly give ourselves away,” Edmund said dryly.

Susan raised an eyebrow at him. “You know better than that. We can always give ourselves away.”
