Three Sentence Ficathon 2022

This post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2!  Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.  (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Lirael, called the goldenhand, sat quietly outside the circle.

No simple thing, it hummed with power to her senses, spell upon spell and barrier upon barrier as it barred the way to the creature within, despite the way he was held tightly by Ranna's grip.

The Disreputable Dog might have gained her freedom - or was never truly bound at all - as had Mogget, but here beneath the House, slumbering quietly, there is still a bound prisoner of the Abhorsen.

Taking a Holiday

Tobirama turned the key in the ignition for the fourth time as thumping noises echoed through the enclosed space and the car rocked over and over again. His brother shrieked wordlessly in the passenger seat - whether in some kind of hopeless attempt to frighten the geese away or in panic, he didn't know.

"Next time, Anija, if you want to take a holiday," Tobirama gritted out the words, "don't choose Canada."

edgar!! oh edgar, this is such a hard decision for him, but i really love the wisdom and self-knowledge (the knowledge he needs to know himself) behind it. i also love the face/outface wordplay at the beginning.

Personal report of Dr Seward on the progress of treating one Mrs Lucy Holmwood-Morris-Seward's anaemia, November, 1896:

Since the events that simultaneously resulted in my mentor's, Dr Van Helsing, and Lucy's second husband, Quincey Morris, yet also freed the patient from the cause of her anaemia, there has been progress both great and tepid - great, for Lu-the patient is no longer distressed by proximity to garlic and the instincts that had begun to arise in her, which somewhat reminded me of a prior patient, one R. M. Renfield, in their violent and blood-focused nature, seem to be no longer present, or at least suppressed, provided she receive her regular treatment - tepid, for she remains physically frail, although her beauty is maintained, and seems incapable of exercise that may increase her stamina in an appropriate way, save in the first days after her treatment, particularly because she is reluctant to go out during morning or midday, due to a skin sensitivity that has apparently developed as a psychosomatic symptom of the distress and trauma she experienced during the aforementioned events, and will only go outside in the late afternoon as the sun begins to go down - being as it is winter, she is currently in high spirits as there is more time she feels safe to venture outside and enjoy walks with her dear friend, Mrs Harker, who moved here to Whitby, as did I.

Her treatment may seem unusual, but it is not without its forebears - Lady Duncayne used such a treatment for years to keep her health, for one example - and with such willing suppliers as Mr Holmwood and myself, I fail to see why we should ever cease. Why, with consistent enough transfusions and - ah! Mrs Harker, excellent, you brought the sandwiches - I was just about to talk about how you had also volunteered to lend dear Lucy your blood, do you want to talk about it on the phonograph? no? yes, you always preferred transcribing others over recording your own voice, Mina - with consistent enough transfusions of fresh blood, dearest Lucy may outlive us all yet; even today's small transfusion of my blood had awoken a flush in your face that makes me want to talk unscientifically of roses on snow and stars in the night sky - ah! and a ravenous hunger, judging by how you quickly you wolfed down that sandwich from Mina's hand - I cannot express how happy I am that you want Mina, Mina's help as much as you want mine and Arthur's; the transfusion is finished so I shall remove the tubing from my arm - can you pass the tourniquet? - and fetch all of us some proper lunch, while you two feed each other sandwiches.

End of report.

oh this is a great take on the prompt, he really does love this song even though he knows how it ends. and ‘while he could warn orpheus to take hold of her until he knows how to keep from losing sight of her’ is just the perfect encapsulation of the tragedy that plays out again and again … but it’s also a love story, you know?

mm love that greek philosophy right at the top. it raises and explores some really good questions, and i like the little twist at the end, fate is character but what is character without all the varied fates that formed it?

This post has been removed, do not repost without mod approval.
Reason for removal: Rule 8: No Shitposts.

For fucks sake, what made you think this was okay? The mods in this reddit may all be civilians, yet anyone who has even remote interest in current politics recognized this as the Uchiha massacre. I don't care if you like Land of Fire or think they should get off their high horse, there is no reason to make light of a tragic event where children under ten got murdered.

We have had some attempts of creative writing in this sub and all of them tried harder than switching genders and randomly correcting ages up or down by one. I would say go sign up for a writing course instead of instigating drama on the internet, but I wouldn't want to inflict your personality on any teacher.

Finally, I only vaguely follow ninja politics anyway, but last I heard the surviving sibling somehow switched affiliations and is running around who knows where. As a mods we generally try not to get murdered at night after being tortured by hallucinations.

We have therefore banned this account and IP. This ruling is final and there will be no chances for appeal.

“Laertes, you should know that I…” the king cannot finish a sentence that will hurt them both whether he says it or keeps it in, but Laertes knows right then that he wants to hear it, and sooner because they might not get a later.

“Listen,” he says, twining their fingers together as true tender, “I need to be alone for a few hours because there’s just too much, but I wanted this, I liked it, and I’ll find you again so we can talk about what it all means, okay?” Claudius nods, but there’s a panicked look in his eyes, so Laertes does the only thing he can think of, which is to raise their hands and press his lips to each fingertip in turn before they each bring a fist to their chests as a farewell salute.

Rudolf’s still such a little kid sometimes, Kyrie thinks as he shakes the box to guess what’s inside.

His eyes light up as he asks, “Extra bullets for the Winchester,” and she thinks: but he’s her little kid, Asumu never knew what she had in him.

“Go on and see,” she dares, and she doesn’t miss the flicker of disappointment when it turns out to be only chocolates, but they’re his favorite kind so he gets over it and kisses her cheek, and she resolves to get him more firearms at the next chance he gets.

Umineko, Ange (Spoilers up to Episode Four)

[personal profile] ernest 2022-02-02 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ange seeks out the Witch Hunt, the only people who have thought about her family’s destruction twelve years ago as much as she has – more than she has, if she’s being honest, because for years she tried not to think about it at all even when the fact of the explosion is what made her the pariah she is today.

These armchair detectives have all combed through the bottle messages front to back to uncover the real truth, so they know the written version by heart, but the longer she talks to Professor Ootsuki, the sicker she feels – they treat it as a riddle or a puzzle, but forget that each of those victims or potential culprits were people too, not just pieces to be deciphered.

“Thank you,” she says, meaning it, “but looking at the outside of the catbox just isn’t enough for me anymore.”

thank you! he really hasn't had the self-knowledge he needs to survive until right now, and then he has one hell of a learning curve, but i'm very proud of him for taking this step.
hee, as i was starting to write this one i thought 'hmm, i'd better look up outface to make sure it means what i think it means,' and the double meaning of causing an opponent to back down and confronting an obstacle unflinchingly really informed a lot of what came next. i think i also found a definition related to exposing oneself to danger, too.

"They can be reasoned with, bargained with, and even, the very boldest might try to use cunning, trickery, or diplomacy to…" Kagami trailed off as Adrien and Marinette opened the box they were carrying, displaying three silver rings, each of them ornate dragons with a pearl in their front claws.

At Kagami's continued silence as she worked through the implications of the gift and the offer that came with it, Adrien turned to Marinette and said, "Guess we did slay a dragon after all."

"I admit, Master Splinter, I had thought I was the only one who had given themselves over to the Darkness so thoroughly and yet served the Light."

"The way of ninjitsu is the way of deception, Master Riku," the humanoid rat said as the four humanoid turtles practiced their kata, "and those who study it must be able to cloak themselves in whatever is convenient to proceed in their mission. It may be easier for them to walk the path of darkness, but, as you well know, the choices were make earlier in our lives do not fully define us."

thank you so much! and yeah, exactly, hermes knows it's a story worth telling, even if he wishes he could just make it go differently. ugh, this show is such a good pair of love stories and such a good pair of tragedies (and i think what makes it so satisfying despite the inevitable end is the fact that hades and persephone are going to try again so there's a hope that their personal tragedy is finally ending and can become a love story again)

So Many Journeys May the Sun and Moon (Hamlet, Claudius/Gertrude)

[personal profile] ernest 2022-02-02 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It is strange, to trust that what her husband says is what he really means. Gertrude had gotten so used to figuring out what Old King Hamlet was thinking, and soothing his moods before he had to make them known with fists and harsh words, that for the first few weeks she still flinched whenever Claudius was too gentle with her, calculating when the other shoe would drop.

“Oh darling,” he said when he finally understood her fear. “I don’t play those kinds of games, not with you and not with anyone – this love is too dearly won.”

thank you! they're some of my favorite questions, and the fact that the exploration is often more important than the answers themselves is also delicious. i love the phrasing of 'all the varied fates that formed it' that's exactly what i was going for.

King Lear, Edgar & Edmund

[personal profile] ernest 2022-02-02 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Edgar runs after Edmund, screaming and waving a bit of cloth in his face, and when Edmund blinks at it, he hurries to explain, “Friendship bracelets: I made a matching one for myself so neither of us forget what it’s like to have a brother.”

Edgar bites his lip and looks up at him, pleading, and it hits Edmund that he’s trying his best, even if he’s never understood any of the fundamental differences between them. He drops his suitcase and grabs Edgar in a fierce hug despite his startled squeak, because neither of them know when they’ll see each other again, and that just hit him too.
