What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

". . .Sin . . . Sin Jae?" Jangmi tried tentatively, brushing a hand over Sin Jae's shoulder. He didn't pull away, but he didn't really react, either.

Jangmi edged closer, and when Sin Jae didn't tense, wrapped both arms around him, snug against his back . . . wishing he had said anything at all, even in a snap of temper, about whatever he and Tae Eul had found at the care hospital today . . . instead of just shutting down quietly.

"It's bitter cold," Mother had said, "stay in the den with your brothers today."

San had only needed to poke her nose out - getting a stinging lungful of icy air and precious little scent in the dead cold - to underline Mother's advice. She immediately withdrew back into the cave, burying herself between her brothers' bodies, curling into the warmth of their fur with a grateful shiver.

"Bunny..." Kotetsu leaned over and tugged at the blond curls poking out from under the covers. "Come on, get out of bed! You're missing the sunrise!"

"We are on vacation, old man." Bunny's voice was muffled. "I am not getting out of bed until the sun is actually up."

"But Bunny-chan—"

The blond curls disappeared under the covers entirely. "No."

thank you! that phrase took a lot of tweaking before i was happy with it, and yeah! yeah!! they're all at the mercy of this thing they're a part of, and she can't find hope anywhere but the roulette and the miracle, it's gone too far for anything else.

"Orange soda, orange juice, they're basically the same thing, aren't they?" Hardison said.

Parker nodded. "I think so."

"Dammit, Hardison," Eliot grumbled, and shoved him aside to see if he could rescue the dish.

She mostly stays in Northuldra, working with the people there to restore the connections they had to the spirits before they lost their way, but when she's in Arendelle, she mostly stays in the castle she raised, a familiar environment where she knows each and every shard and flake.

She's not going to risk another heart to her powers other than her own.

It's safer that way.

"C'mon, man." Sam grinned. "You know you want to."

Bucky glared at him. "No."

Sam prodded him with his beer bottle. "Come onnnnn..."

"I'm not saying it."

"It's just two little words! And he did save your life. Just say it. Just say it. Just—"

Bucky scrubbed a hand over his face. "Fine! Thank you, Redwing."

Sam laughed and leaned over to plant a smacking kiss on the side of his head. "See? That wasn't so bad." He patted Redwing, sitting on the chair beside him. "We'll teach him manners yet."

Orochimaru bared his fangs in a vicious warning, hissing and drawing back, eyes narrowing, but- He froze as someone else stepped in front of him - not coming to the forefront of the loud handful of idiots who had tried to corner him, but blocking Orochimaru, back to him - and a warm shoulder brushed his own.

"You're our teammate now." Tsunade said with a fierce little huff, winding her arm through his own as Jiraiya started to shout, chasing away the others; Orochimaru had never needed anyone to stand up for him, but . . . his chest tightened and he curled his arm around Tsunade's as Jiraiya came back to them with a grin.

"Why do I put up with you?" Tsunade asked, but allowed herself to be pulled down between her boys, laughing; Jiraiya warm and broad on one side, blocking off the rest of the world, Orochimaru slim and cosy on the other, between her and the wall. "You're both horrible."

"Like you wanted to be on that dull-as-dust mission with that idiotic headman any more than we did." Orochimaru said with a little twist of a sneer that did little to mar his eerie prettiness; Jiraiya was muttering heartfelt agreement from behind Tsunade, and . . . well, she couldn't exactly argue, no.

"How dare you!" Tsunade nearly screamed, fingers flexing, and Jiraiya was tempted to point out Orochimaru had only quoted the truth - Tsunade had left Konoha, long before Orochimaru had and with . . . perhaps less reason. Jiraiya couldn't exactly argue on his own behalf, either - he'd never been declared a nukenin, but perhaps only because their old sensei had always given him the most slack; he'd barely set foot in their village for nearly two decades.

"Perhaps rather than railing at me in an attempt to hide your own guilty conscience," Orochimaru said in his most venomous, velvety tones, "you should wonder at the village that drove all of us - her strongest and, once, her most loyal - to flee, not only her but each other."

The soldiers all talk about which house they're going to as they go off duty, with the names of the women and the outfits they're going to pay for, whether leather, linen, silk, or something else.

"Sometimes I think it would be nicer to lay down these burdens and live a life more like the ones they seek comfort with," Sephiroth said after he had believed the room empty.

Cloud, the single sentry assigned to make sure Sephiroth was taken care of properly, silently agreed with him, carefully nurturing the hope they could both wear silk instead of steel before there had to be more killing.

Meshi comes home limping and whimpering in pain, serious-looking bite marks covering his neck and legs. Neko smells fox musk and blood on him, and she can guess what happened even before he tells her he ran afoul of a fox at her den.

Long ago, when Neko was bitten by a dog, Hibiki treated her wounds with water and a sharp-smelling leaf paste, all the while murmuring magic words to take the pain away. She wrapped Neko's wounds in soft, clean cloth, and Neko was all better when she took the cloth away.

Neko can't do those things. She doesn't know how to make the leaf paste, and all the cloth in the shrine has long rotted away -- and even if she found some, her claws would not be able to wrap them.

She scolds Meshi for his recklessness and cleans his wounds with rasps of her tongue, licking away the blood and making sure there is no dirt or debris. Then she orders the other children to bring him fish and his favorite orange crabs, and when the children depart, she curls against Meshi and rumbles her deepest purr, the way she would in the nights when Hibiki started to cry. Her purr isn't as magic as Hibiki's words, but it will have to do.

Even though Meshi interferes with her naps and duties, she keeps him close over the coming days. If she doesn't, he will try to run off or scratch at his wound.

She finds his bites very worrisome. Most of the time, bites heal, but sometimes they turn black or red and start oozing a foul-smelling liquid. When this happens, children can become very sick, and there is nothing Neko can do but hope that they get better.

This generation's Meshi is a lucky child, though. His wounds heal without a problem, and soon he struts around the shrine as if he was never injured, bragging about how he beat a fox. She swats him hard on the head when she catches him at it; he shouldn't encourage other children to do dangerous things. The next time a child gets into trouble, they may not be so lucky.

Neko does not want to be impatient, but she hopes Hibiki will come home soon. Sometimes it is very hard to take care of the children on her own.

"Sen- sensei?" Sakura asks, fingers curling in towards her palms, hesitating just inside the fusuma. "I know it's late, I'm sorry, I just-"

Before she can even finish, Kakashi-sensei shifts up in his futon and holds out a hand, and Sakura means to sit beside him, she does, but . . . Sakura climbs into his lap, a faint corner of her mind scolding that she is far too old for this and Kakashi-sensei was never-

A soft croon and a murmuring question, Kakashi-sensei's voice a little rough - he was asleep before she came - as he tucks Sakura's head beneath his chin, and Sakura turns her face against his collarbone and struggles not to cry, feeling safe, and cared for, and somehow at home.

This was perfect! Sam/Bucky & Redwing - the best trio, whether Bucky likes it or not. I really love the way you write their voices - both their stubborn attitude shines through and I could even picture their expressions. Too funny.

The satisfaction in her voice made him wonder why they hadn't made love to each other sooner -- and, more urgently, why it was that they had just decided to stop.

Smiling mischievously, he brought her hand to his ass: "You still haven't -- want to?"

From the shadows, Draculus's laugh echoed around them, impossible to tell from where by sound alone. "Are these the forces you array against me, grandchild?" he demanded mirthfully. "Infants, all of you, to one such as I."

Rodimus shot a glance at Soundwave, who nodded; he stepped forward, addressing one shadow in particular as if guessing Draculus's location. "I want to negotiate, Grandsire," he called, and belatedly dropped a nobody say a word! into the group comm. "Surely we can come to a peaceable agreement."

"Your bargaining position is highly dubious." Still with the dark amusement. "Still, if you wish to offer me tribute..."

Go slag yourself. "What is it you want?"

"What do I want, you ask?" Another laugh, derisive and grating and loud enough to be painful. "Shall I demand your eternal servitude? Ah, there it is," the voice hissed, "that hesitation. No, grandchild, you still don't understand the truth yet, and until you do, there can be no peaceable agreement!"

In the group comm, Soundwave said, Contact, along with a firing solution. Bluestreak immediately reacted, snapping his rifle to his shoulder and firing two shots of blazing energy into the darkness nearly ninety degrees from the point Rodimus had been addressing. There was a scream, followed by a thud - a solid hit.

"Now!" Rodimus ordered, and the Cybertronian Vampire Collective converged on Draculus.

(Springboards off this, more or less. Also, I did not pull Draculus out of my ass.

“Yu Laoshi, surely you see how extraordinary your story is, to have been high school classmates who lost touch for ten years then reunited by fate when you have both established unique careers, and then you both went on attain such individual great successes in both your chosen fields – I mean, you were the lead engineer on our country’s first deep space probe! – it has all the beats of a wonderful, beautiful love story, especially now that your work is no longer classified and we can portray it on screen.”

Jing Jing exchanged a look with Yu Tu, unable to help laughing at the still baffled expression on his face, then said, “I’m not saying that from a…creative standpoint, your proposal has potential, but honestly, you’d probably have to take an abundance of creative liberties to make this potential movie actually have something resembling a plot, because I can see why my husband is so confused; you’re so excited to tell a story about how we reconnected ten years after high school, but from our perspectives, honestly we just sat at home playing video games for a month, hardly the stuff of edge-of-your-seat narratives.”

"I think 'Athena' is way too on the nose," Kida told her husband while wrinkling her own nose for effect, "there are plenty of other names meaning wisdom that are far more original."

"True," Milo nodded, "and we don't even know for certain yet if we're having a girl...we could try the Atlantean word for wisdom, or similar --"

"This is when the Atlantean palace's gigantic library and historic roll of names comes in handy," Kida sighed.
