Three Sentence Ficathon 2022

This post is NOW CLOSED TO NEW PROMPTS!  PLEASE POST YOUR NEW PROMPTS HERE, IN POST 2!  Do continue to fill prompts here but please put all new prompts in Post 2.

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!

Here's a Friending meme!

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

Here's my attempt at a text box that might go horribly awry.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.  (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

A special thank you to [personal profile] conuly  .
Last year, Conuly started logging all unfilled prompts.
This year's (2021) unfilled prompts are here.
Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Creepy, in a good way! Captures the spirit of the HoL. I also feel Susan's desperation to return after being banished.

Unreal

The last time Lan Wangji had shared a table with Wen Qing, they had drank water. There had been no tea to be had in the Burial Mounds.

Sharing a pot of high quality white tea together in the Cloud Recesses, with Wei Wuxian safely asleep in the Jingshi, felt almost unreal to Lan Wangji. He took another sip from his cup, grounding himself in the heat of the drink.

such a chilling image, such a perfect moment to artemy and stop and stare and wonder what the hell is going on. (wondering what his father did, to infect his family home like this, and the infection is literal. but also metaphorical.)

"Cultivator, sure, master of a powerful sect, yeah, but a human is a human; Junshang could find a better cultivation partner than that!"

"Ah, but he isn't just any man--when Junshang was young, Master Shen pushed him into the Endless Abyss to struggle out by himself, driving him mad and nearly killing him!"

"Oh, well, okay, that is romantic."

eee what an excellent meeting. i love that edgar has to teach himself to speak like himself again, or like someone other than poor tom, if he doesn't have a self to return to. (and i like how he positions poor tom as a persona outside himself, someone to guide him and his words, show him who to be and where to go.) he and feste are going to have a fun time. :D

aaah susan. she's lost so much, i love how you painted the mundane details of her grief, the screaming siren, the fury of her heartbeat, the words that didn't touch her from those who couldn't understand ... and then beautiful image of her going to the sea and deciding to come back, and live.

also i'm glad she's got more than one boyfriend, she deserves it.

A bit different sect leader Jiang

(Anonymous) 2022-01-21 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
In another world Jiang Yanli is born as a woman, who spends her life standing by her brothers’ side, supporting them in all the ways she can, helping them stand whenever they fall and who pushes her own trouble to the side-lines for them.

In this world Jiang Yanli is born as the first son of Jiang Fengmian, an heir to the YunmengJiang sect. In this world he stands in front of his brothers, gently leading them, shielding them from all harm and protecting them as much as his low cultivation allows.

His cultivation is low because of his health; because the majority of his qi is used to keep his body alive and also to drive away the bouts of pain that would otherwise leave him squirming with pain. All the more he applies himself into other areas that a proper sect leader needs to know: politics, economics, leadership and cultivation (at least on theoretical level). But one day A-xian shows him the talismans that he is making, and soon Yanli realizes that they are the perfect tool for someone not fortunate enough to be able to cultivate properly.

Because Yanli is the sect heir, the majority of their parents’ attention is set on him; his father is proud that his heir is sharing his ideals and his mother is happy that his father approves of him. And without his mother's constant judgement and his father's silent disapproval, the pressure is lifted from Jiang Cheng’s shoulders and he is free to live his life without constantly walking on eggshells (he is still wants to be useful to the sect and Yanli will never get tired of the way he beams when Yanli ruffles his hair).

When the Sunshot campaign ends and the Jin sect start to show their fangs, Yanli doesn’t respond to their taunts and instead manages to keep a clear head. When A-xian gets in trouble, Yanli investigates, slowly but thoroughly and at the nearest Discussion conference he (with the help of Jin Zixuan), presents crystal-clear evidence that throws Jin Guangshan off his throne and leaves all the other sect leaders calling for his head. And in the end the Dafan Wen are accepted as a harmless part of Yunmeng Jiang.

When 3SF ends I will post this to my AO3: [archiveofourown.org profile] Sundream

marie! 'the red of her lips as good an oracle as bones or snakeskin' is such a vivid, evocative image, you can hear her bitterness, and there's beauty in it, and dante turning back that oracular threat, from his distant death to the pain that's killing her right now.

company fic! oh, bobby, there's this sort of ... detached depression to his thinking, where he can vaguely remember having fun, once, but remembering isn't the same as feeling it. and i love that final sentence on love, and the sort of challenge it's meant to be.

ooh am i right in thinking this is a particular moment in the almeida theater production of hamlet with andrew scott? it's such a significant look, and this is such a great take on what that look is saying, an unspoken apology he could never expect forgiveness for.

sweethearts! there's something so cozy and familiar about hamlet stealing osric's sweater, and osric knowing he'll never get it back, but he looks good in it, and it feels good to sidle close to him. also 'marginalia' is the best word.

I'm glad you like it! Both Bucky and Nat have difficult voices so I've never written them together before so it's a relief that they feel IC. Also I'm happy you picked up on Natasha's intentions, because I could see her being aware of the situation.

Thanks for reading and letting me know what you thought. <3

eee berowne. it's so good to see him settle into this life, now that it's not just an abstract challenge in the way of him and the ending, he's connecting with the people and his work and finding another side of himself in it. which is why rosaline made him do it in the first place, but it's not just purging himself of his faults, it's becoming something more. i'm so happy for him!!

eee thank you. you're right, beatrice may be a wicked witch who torments lovers, but a man who rejects his bride on their wedding day because she's not what he expected is particularly deserving of her ire.

Re: Umineko, Beatrice

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2022-01-21 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
oof it's tragic that for beatrice being saved is the same as being stopped, but it's the only hope she has, the miracle she spins her roulette for. and 'not a single member of this horrible family deserves anything the family has done to them' is a particularly tragic phrase, because they are the family, they're doing this to each other and themselves, but the family's more than them, and they're all at the mercy of it.

ot3 ot3!! i love and admire laertes for his respect and understanding of claudius and gertrude's pasts, and i love them just as much for their insistence that he be a part of their futures. they won't let him run from happiness!
