What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on. I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

“Ah, Anne,” Richard says, and grimaces, pulling at one shoulder with the opposite hand, as he does more and more often these days. “You say that now, but you may not always feel so - you should have caution, for who knows what manner of man I’ll grow into, at this rate.”

“A good one,” she insists, and tugs at him until he tips into the solar’s window seat with a groan of defeat, where she can climb up beside him to dig her small fists into the knotted muscles trying their best to straighten his frame, “and I will so marry you, you’ll see.”

“I did not realize they had married me to an old man,” she teases, lying beneath him in the clear light of early morning, fingers playing through the thatch of his beard, giving the rare silver hairs buried among the dark a tug. “Soon you will be a greybeard as wise and venerable as your dear father.”

And he laughs - oh, how she loves his laugh, warm and throaty, vibrating through his throat beneath her fingers - feigning inspection of her own rich mane of hair, promising, “Not until your hair turns silver as the Scamander, my love-”

(-in another life, Andromache grasps the dull grey of her hair, shearing it away until its length is too short to pull before her eyes and prove him a liar).

Oh no, I made myself sad.

Though Inej had left, she had not left Kaz’s sight: He knew the news from every harbor, of course, his and rival gangs’ harbors alike, learning whispers of the news from the sea—and when two men dipped in tar and crow feathers had graced the Stadhall’s entrance, he’d not even needed his informants—but he had gone further than that, too: He’d paid off crew members from merchant ships to bring him the news directly from the sea, so that he could follow all of her exploits.

Inej could handle herself—she’d earned quite the name for herself, actually; the name Captain Ghafa slipped along the docks of the harbor in fearful whispers, and the corner of Kaz’s mouth tipped up each time he heard—but it made him feel safer to know what she was up to; it was like a net, though she’d surely refuse this net, too, if she knew.

He leaned on his cane as he stood on one of the docks and watched the sun emerge from the horizon—and somewhere on that distant horizon, Inej scoured the sea of slavers, as he kept watch from afar.

(apologies in advance for the tortured punctuation - I was trying for just 5 sentences before admitting defeat!)

They're the other side of the con and both Sophie and Nate are now out of action with nasty colds, undoubtedly caught through a combination of the people they'd been dealing with all being ill and the truly awful weather, when suddenly Hardison realises that he doesn't feel sick - not at all which he thinks is really unusual or would have been not all that long ago.

It occurs to him that things have changed since Eliot and he got together and he looks across at the other man, who's in the kitchen prepping dinner and before he can stop himself, blurts out, "Eliot!" Eliot turns sharply, knife in hand bracing himself for a threat. "I'm not sick," Hardison continues, surprise still evident in his voice; the confusion on Eliot's face prompts him to carry on, "Nate and Sophie are both ill, everyone on the con had some kind of cold or infection, and Parker isn't feeling great and the weather is lousy and I was always catching stuff before but now..." He trails off not sure where exactly he's going with this. Eliot huffs in exasperation, turns back to his preparation where he pointedly picks up another red pepper and begins to dice it and suddenly Hardison realises that this is what Eliot does to protect him. He can't actually fight germs or whatever, but he feeds Hardison all this food that boosts his own immunity, he doesn't let him stay up all night gaming but makes sure he gets a proper amount of sleep and this is the result - Hardison is healthy. "You did it!" he said with a certain amount of awe in his voice, it gets a typical Eliot huff and shrug, but Hardison can see the small lift of a smile almost hidden by his hair and the angle of his head.

He stands up and walks across to stand behind Eliot, waits for the other man to turn, then says, "You did it. Thank you," finishing with a kiss before letting Eliot get back to his preparation.

Hell yeah! Go Rory! Get it, girl. Great plot twist :D

*Laughs* aw, Rory, you're a little too gullible sometimes. This is very cute; I can easily see the scene playing out in my mind.

“What do you want from me?” I ask, and if I sound desperate, it’s because I am; every rocking motion of the ship pushes us closer, the light in me straining out for him like it’s natural, like my skin longs to be under his hands.

“The more interesting question is, what do you want, Alina?” he asks, raising one perfect eyebrow, cold and impeccable and infuriating, riding the waves with unconscious grace, even as I stumble against him. “I see it in your face,” he adds, tipping my chin up with one finger, and even that’s enough to make me overflow, a glow spilling out of me, “your curiosity, your desire - you want me to make you scream, don’t you?” and it’s all I can do to breathe, watching the flicker in his eyes, knowing he’s seen the raw, bare need in mine.

One more, one fucking more, Agnes thought, gritting her teeth as she put down the contract she was reviewing yet again and picked up the phone. One of the sponsors. Of course it was; Agnes took a breath and let it out, reminded herself HeroTV needed them, no matter how obnoxious they were and how many stupid questions the reps asked about disaster fallout - an easier reminder to give herself on the fourth call than the twelfth - and picked up the phone.

“Come now,” he says, this capricious god, tossing the golden curls from his eyes, sharp and cutting as blades. “Be a good girl and repent, say you’ll be mine, and I shall be generous, and lift your curse.”

Cassandra does not squint under his light, choosing willful blindness and letting the words fall from her lips: “The sun needs fuel to feed its fire, and the day will come when bright Apollo has burned all his worship, and will crumble to ash,” and so it is she sees his face go grey, and smiles.

Things that unexpectedly disappoint - A hototogisu that refuses to sing. The sudden crow of a cock when you are immersed in nighttime conversation. Men who swear they love you but send their poems late.

A translation of your book in which the translator has made insinuations about your honesty and accuracy. You cannot defend yourself against these accusations, because you are dead.

It's also disappointing when everyone insists on mentioning your name together with the name of someone you do not care about, simply because you wrote at the same court. People will also insist there was a bitter rivalry between you two, when you barely used to think of her at all.

Hearing her name with yours is disappointing even after you learn to expect it, and after a while, you begin to dislike her after all.

Considering the kinds of disaster injuries she's yanked them both back from the brink with . . . poor Sakura >.> she's likely had a lot of practise at that kind of emotional triage. And when it's just one of her boys being an idiot rather than brink-of-death. . .

He is very durable . . . but not invulnerable, and he might treat his own injuries rather more like the latter a bit too often.

I suspect the boys never handle a battered Sakura well. . .

When the General asks her to dance, Miss Alina Starkov cannot help but laugh, though she knows her laugh is not at all ladylike, the twist of her mouth too honest and too sour for the taste of the ton. “And what would the King’s right hand - and the most notorious rake in Ravka, I might add - possibly want with an orphan girl from the provinces?” she asks, surprised when he takes her hand in a firm grip despite her protests, the heat of his skin - or, quite possibly, her own - palpable even though her gloves.

“Do you think yourself so unimportant, Miss Starkov?” the General asks, in a voice low enough that she moves closer to hear, into the waiting circle of his arms; close enough for him to murmur his next words against her ear, indecently close: “Rest assured that I believe there is far more to you than meets the eye, and I mean to uncover each and every one of your secrets, sweet girl.”

(Well, this was predictable.)
