What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

“Peter!” May yells, bursting into the lab, in that tone somewhere between relieved and so angry at having to be relieved she isn’t really sure what she feels, and he thought he’d never be so glad to hear it as he is now.

Somewhere behind him, he’s vaguely aware of Peters 2 and 3 looking up, of Peter 3 nudging Peter 2, but honestly, he’s too happy to see May, to know she’d made it out of that condo building okay after they’d been separated that he’s just babbling, “Aunt May, thank god, I’m so happy to see you, I thought-”

“Wait, Aunt May?” he hears Peter 3 blurt out from behind him, and he really, really hopes it’s only the spider-senses that let him catch the next bit and that May misses it, because, “Holy shit, I was about to ask who his hot friend was - does your Aunt May look like that?” followed by, “Nope, absolutely not, not even close,” is probably not something that would go over well with her.

loool I love this so much, and the "does your Aunt May look like that" is just the icing on the cake!!

I got the image in my head of Andrew!Peter trying to slide up on Aunt May while MCU!Peter is all "dude. no!" about it, and I couldn't resist. I'm glad you thought it was funny too!

Lucy paused, her hand stilling in the sea girl's hair where she'd been carding her fingers through it, and frowned at the horizon. "There is, in places--those places are called 'the coast'. Narnia and other countries lie against the coasts. But that's the other side of the world, and all I've heard is that Aslan's country is somewhere on this side, so there must be an end on here as well."

The former queen fell silent for a long time, eyes watching the glittering water--an end, there had to be an end, an end to the sea, an end to their journey, and o, Alsan, did it have to be so?--until the delicate touch of a brown and purple hand at her cheek made her look down into the sea girl's face.

"I wish it didn't have an end."

Lucy smiled, bittersweet. "Me too."

Narnia, any, who painted the painting in Harold and Alberta's spare room?

Alberta Scrubb was too well brought up to give away a wedding present, even if it was from a plumber (at least, that's what she thought Harold had said, but how on earth would he be on gifting terms with a plumber?).

"Put it in the spare room," she directed her new husband, "somewhere it can't be seen from the hall" (because after all, it wouldn't do for any of their guests to think the Scrubbs the sort of fanciful people who adorned their walls with glistening seas and Viking ships – Harold wasn't some useless Oxford don, for goodness' sake, he was in Business. Then she flitted off to unpack the china, which was too good to use except with company; a few desultory hammer strokes echoed her footsteps down the uncarpeted hallway.

Harold straightened the painting absently, because it bothered him when things were crooked; of course, the whole thing bothered him – the archaic style, the whimsical subject matter, and the unfathomable woman who had given him the painting in the first place.

"I'm no artist," Miss Plummer had said (Harold was too well brought up to agree with her aloud), "but I think you and your young wife could use a breath of sea air – start your married life together with a little wind in your sails!"

Harold had only been a lodger in her exceedingly odd boarding house for a few short weeks before the wedding, but he had learned it was no use arguing; besides, it was just a silly picture, and could do no harm tucked away in the spare bedroom.

Edmund asked once, who was the shipwright that designed the Dawn Treader--her beauty and her make sang an echo of old Narnia, even if seafaring had become a lost art. He was told that shipwright was a young man who had remained in Narnia to care for his newborn child. "He said he based it on a painting he saw in the palace once," Caspian said, "but the funny thing is that we could never find the painting afterward!"

When they got back to their aunt and uncle's home, the three of them crowded in the backroom, watching as Edmund quietly pulled the painting down. "You don't suppose it's really the same picture?" Lucy asked, but hope made her voice hungry. "Could Aslan have seen to it that it got here in time for your parents to receive?"

Eustace wondered about how a painting could through time and worlds, but any argument was stillborn when Edmund muttered "Aslan's crafted greater miracles than getting one painting to England."

There was no painter's mark on the front, but Edmund flipped it around--on the back, there was an extremely out of place, yellowed piece of paper glued to the middle. Lucy hushed Eustace's protests as Edmund used a fingernail to gently pry the paper away. Underneath, a large, looping signature left Edmund ashy and Lucy gasping.

Eustace only grimaced. "Who's Peridan?"

Lucy bit her lip and could only murmur "an old friend" as she watched Edmund sit heavily upon the guest bed, fingers trembling as he touched a painting once painted with the hands of a man he planned to marry once.

I really like this idea, that rather than being an English painting of an inexplicably Narnian ship, it was a Narnian ship inexplicably in England...

Oof. Well done! And that idea of Peridan, in fics, often being an artist.

I could swear it all stems to one particular fic way back in ye olden days, because I've seen him also written as coming from the Lone Islands, being an artist, and being half Carolmene before in three or four different fics. Hell, even I've caught myself doing similar things and wondering why so many of us keep going back to that characterization.

It was a bit of a joke: Qiao Yifan snuck around the edges of training camp, quiet and unobtrusive, and so the trainers thought that he should use that talent in-game as well. Assassins paid attention, disappeared from others' sight, and took advantage of the slightest opening to make their move.

Qiao Yifan, staring at Gao Yingjie's bright smile across the cafeteria table, wished that he was a little worse at that second trait and a little better at the third.

It's not until Da Qing slips back through the window into the apartment that he sees the messages, written not in words but the shape of everything else: the careful lack of anything perishable in the fridge, clingwrap with "do NOT eat after" dates labelled neatly by marker in Professor Shen's handwriting. (The third hidden stash of lollipops that really isn't much more secret than the first two, missing even the lime ones that Zhao Yunlan hated even though his favourite brand only ever came in assorted packs).

It's ridiculous, all of it, burning in his throat like the words that won't escape even in a yowl: why didn't you tell me you were never coming back?!

Ohh, my heart!

Stamping all over your heart is definitely free real estate, especially for a cat :P heh.

OH NO. I love the way it builds, and all the mundane details (the clingwrap dates, omg, kudos to Shen Wei for his organization, the lollipops) -- and how it all goes to such a DEVASTATING place.

And the the way the formatting adds in the last sentence is great!

That is very good to hear actually! Because I was mildly concerned the details would come off as vaguely absurdist and/or be too long to get the intended effect, but seems like it worked haha.

The Untamed, Any character, Rain

The Unclean Realm was cold and bleak in the rainstorm, rivulets of icy water running down the walls and near horizontal flurries sweeping across the courtyards. It was a day when any soft, useless man who didn't know up from down was surely tucked under a quilt, huddled away in safety.

Nie Huaisang stood atop his walls facing the wind, feeling his ever-present fury cool under its onslaught and sighed in relief; he'd join his brother in qi deviation after taking his full revenge and not a second before.

Oh yes! He's so much stronger than people think he is!

He's just great!

Lan Wangji stands in the rain and smiles a little at himself. He watches Wei Wuxian make sure all of the rabbits are back and safe in their enclosure before he turns to Lan Wangji with a grin.

Rain does not bring him painful memories anymore, only light.

As the cultivators trickle out of the Demon Subduing Cave, a light drizzle begins to pitter patter on their heads.

They haven't left the Burial Mounds yet when it grows into a steady downpour but among them Lan Sizhui, A-Yuan, takes a moment to turn back towards the peak.
As a light wind blows, the yellow grass caresses his shins and at long last the rain washes the smell of blood away.

These days, the only times Dick feels like himself while on the street are the moments in which the light — whatever the source — shines on the cape in that particular way that brings out that particular gleam.

It's only when the cape is slightly more blue than black that Dick feels like he can breathe again, like he can be a good partner to Damian, like he can do this and not fall down a bottomless pit of despair —

But Gotham is a dark, dark place, and the cape is almost always just black and there is no blue and no end in sight, and it's in those long hours that Dick can't help resenting Bruce just a little.

Any, Any, I am ready for the fight

When they brought him back, brought everybody back, the final fight still needed to be won, and when that was over, Steve walked away, never to come back, at least not as he was now.

Bucky had to deal with a lot, again, but he thought he could handle it, until they told him she was gone too - no more Natasha Romanov.

"There might be a way..." said the one they called Captain Marvel, and Bucky pulled on his jacket, swung his arm into reset, and put on the battle face one more time.

Izuna turns his katana to the light, inspecting it for any flaws, before sliding it home in its sheath.

He flicks his hair over his shoulder, tying it back with a strip of cotton that's as red as the Uchiwa that declares his allegiance, and grins at his reflection.

He's ready for the fight.

In England, Susan is no queen: she cannot make or dissolve laws, dispense justice or grant mercy, collect or remit taxes, declare war or make peace, sign treaties or raise tariffs; no trappings of power are hers, and instead this world consigns her to play a silly schoolgirl who will grow to be a decorative nonentity, of note only for the children she may have or the background support she may give an enterprise organized and directed by and for the benefit of men.

She refuses to dwell on the loss.

Susan will take the rules England sets down and play by them to win, play so well that no one will outflank her or stand in her path; and once she triumphs she will be a queen once more in truth (though perhaps not in law), and can at last overturn this stifling, tilted board to build something better, truer, deeper in its place.

"Do not!"

Gisla whirls away in a swirl of silk, her arm tingling where his fingers brushed against the flesh beneath her flowing sleeve. Her skim is aflame from the fire of their argument, and she wants to lash out with nails, with teeth, with words that scratch and bite. Her heart beats faster as she sees the same look in her husband's eye, and like that the passion flares, ignites, turns her anger into something more, something better.

"Do not stop," Gisla commands.

Any, Any, That's just too bad

Clint enters the room just as Tony pours the last of the coffee out calling over his shoulder, “That’s just too bad, Hawkeye – seems like we’re out of coffee.”

Bucky is silent against the far wall, watching, Tony hadn’t even noticed him there as he’d entered so wrapped up in his intention to get the last of the coffee ahead of Clint. Bucky sees the expression on Clint’s face drop, watches as he says nothing just nods as if he is expecting this from Tony, but, whatever is going on between Clint and Tony, Bucky believes in Clint and that’s why as Tony leaves the room, he pushes himself away from the wall and hands over a full to-go cup of coffee made just how Clint taught him. Clint never wants much for himself, a cup of coffee as he likes it is such a small thing.

"Too bad about the rails shutting down this way; you take the train, don't you, Agnes?" Ryan says as Agnes descends the stairs towards the street, and she glares; had he waiting for her? "Want a ride, then?" he asks, spinning his keys around his finger.

I would rather walk, Agnes thinks, refusing even to smile as she turns away from him - and right towards a very familiar approaching figure, preceded by a very happy dog.

"Hello, darling," Keith says, smiling, as John bounces on his front paws but does not jump, eagerly awaiting his hello scratch between the ears, "I heard about the train cutoff, so we thought we would come and collect you? The car is around the corner." he offers, along with his crooked arm, and Agnes smiles as she loops her own through it.

"Ainosuke-sama, there is a detective on the phone who wishes to speak with you."

Ainosuke turned from where he'd just finished donning his bright red matador outfit for S and tapped his way across the room. "Well, I'm afraid that's just too bad for them."

Tadashi lifted the phone back to his ear. "My apologies, detective. Ainosuke-sama has just stepped out."

"How long has it been since Saruman bought you? What was the promised price, Gríma?"

Pushed against the pillar, its coldness felt like nothing in comparison to the shivers that Éomer's voice was gifting him. Gríma averted the fiery gaze and caught a glimpse of Éowyn's shadow as she headed back to her chamber. Éomer's grip tightened as his eyes spoke in his stead.

And then it just dawned on Gríma the situation he was in: alone with him, face to face with his promised price, in a risky yet awfully pleasant position.

His insides twisted, as many times before, and he felt his desire surging once again. For he had been waiting. So, so long.

If only things had gone differently. If only Saruman hadn't just taken Théoden's mind but also...

"No," Gríma uttered with difficulty. "You're wrong." He got a hold of Éomer's wrist and from there, slowly climbed on top of the Marshall's hand. Timid, unexpected caresses followed.

"That's just too bad," he said as he felt Éomer's grip far looser.

The newfound realization already piercing through the fingers still touching Gríma's face.

"I wished I could have whispered in your ear too."

"Xanatos," Elisa grinds out. "Funny meeting you here."

"Yes, absolutely hilarious, considering I own the building." Xanatos puts his hands in his pockets and looks up at the warehouse, which is still burning, flames leaping a dozen feet up into the night sky. "I don't suppose you have any leads on what caused the fire?"

Elisa doesn't buy his innocent act for a moment. "And here I was just about to ask you the same question."

"Well, unlike you, I'm not a detective." Xanatos smirks at her. "So I'll just let you get back to detecting how this happened."

It takes everything Elisa has not to punch him in the face.

"Funny- Erm. Funny meeting you here!" Iruka said brightly, thinking especially when I had what was supposed to be an accurate duty roster that put you away from the fort until next week.

Commodore Senju did not look impressed, lifting his chin and meeting Iruka with a flat stare, crossing his arms and blocking the door completely - he wasn't that big, Iruka told himself, he just looked big in his stupidly shiny, obnoxiously well-fit uniform.

"In a fort under my command? Surely quite strange." Tobirama said dryly. "Would you care to try that explanation of what you are doing here again?"

Iruka winced. Just as soon as I think of one, he thought weakly, sidling along the wall.

"So... funny meeting you here," Stiles says when he scrambles up and tries to grin while he does his best to look innocent and ignore Derek behind him, still shirtless, who groans and hides his face in his hands.

"Yes, son," the Sheriff sighs and asks himself why he's surprised his kid is making out with the Beacon Hills Alpha on their living room couch, "it is funny for you to meet me here. At our house. Derek?"

"Yes? Sir."

"You're staying for dinner."

Staring at the head of white hair across the table, bristling with Kanzashi, Izuna grits his teeth, feeling the tension from his clenched jaw radiate up into his temples. "Funny meeting you here," his voice is snide, "at the daimyo's table no less."

"The Senju may not be noble," Tobirama seems unconcerned by his ire, face as tranquil and still as water in a well, "but we still have things to offer, I among them."

Izuna seizes a piece of meat from his plate, biting down viciously on it. Be it as a bribe or tribute, Tobirama's body is not for the daimyo to claim.

Izuna staked his claim a long time ago, and he won't give it up to anyone.

"How unexpected to meet you here," a terribly familiar voice said from the doorway of Elderflower Books, and I looked up from stacking the latest edition of the New Salon to see Lark silhouetted by the midday sun, idly twirling her ivory pipe between her fingers.

I still felt that conditioned pull toward her, but this time it was countered by the bright clarity of immediate danger and I heard myself say, dryly, "Given that I have been employed here since autumn, and further that I am quite sure you have been aware of that fact for nearly the total period of that employment, I find your choice of words somewhat astonishing -- indeed, one might almost call them unexpected."

"Ah Jemis, I have missed you," Lark said, and smiled like a razor caressing a throat.

He'd tried "accidentally" bumping into John on the steps outside the precinct; on the bench outside the elevator at the courthouse; at physio (even though they were scheduled on different days), and even at the gym, all of them with no luck. So, it was probably ironic (but he might have to check with Alanis on it) that who should join the line behind him at the DMV but the very cop over whom he was having quite the exotic wet dreams. And when John's lip quirked and he rested a hand lightly on the small of Matt's back to ease him out of line so they could catch up, it felt like maybe those dreams had a smidgen of a chance after all.

"On your left!" Garrus yelled, not fast enough to save one of the soldiers from falling under a Marauder's fire. Sweat rolled down his face, the sharp sting of failure shooting pain through his open wounds, and blood pulsed in his ears as the bellowing howl of the Reapers resounded in the cold, thin air. He looked up at the falling asteroids, showers of red sparks the colour of her hair filling the sky with fire, and wished for a miracle.

"Oh, look, Naru! Make a wish!"

"I never wish on falling stars," Naruto said quietly, tucking his knees up towards his chest and looking at the sky; Sakura winced, thinking of Naruto's past and how- "it always seems too sad." he finished, lifting a hand and tracing the star's glittering path with one fingertip.

Sakura's throat tightened painfully, and she wrapped an arm around Naruto, drawing him in closer - he made a soft sound of startlement, then burrowed into her embrace the way he always did, as though afraid it would be taken away - and swearing silently, and not for the first time, to see to it Naruto got as many happy things as she could make happen for him.

The sunlight fades in orange hues, and while the warmth of John’s body fades too, he peers skyward. Stars begin pricking through, more beautiful for being the last he’ll see, just as Harry had been beautiful when he’d smiled his last, breathed his last, and John last looked upon him.

A star scrapes a path through the dimming blue, and John wishes upon its silvery trail that he might join Harry in heaven soon.

He stops the thought. There is no eternity here, although this boat ride stretches on endlessly into the twilight; they'll finish the case on the islet ahead and, solved, both mark it on their ledgers and go back to the way they were (...but deep in there, that traitorous, wish-on-a-star child wishes there could be a miraculous blank slate for him as well in a new life; he quashes that thought just as firmly as the other and turns his eyes back to the pale grey depths of the water).

Gisla rested against her husband's chest, watching the stars through the bedroom window as he drew pictures with words, stories of monsters in the deep and mighty warriors who rode the lightning. Blasphemy, all of it, but not if she pretended that it was just a story, something with which to entertain the children. She followed the arc of a falling star and tightened her grip on Rollo's hand; if wishing for the rasp of his voice against her ear and his strong arms around her always were a sin, then she would gladly bear it.

“Yes,” he says, and barely waits for Peter’s follow up, “So what about that oath to first do not harm, doesn’t that apply-” before he breaks in with, “What I’m trying to do no harm to is the universe you broke, Mr Parker.”

Honestly, it does sting a bit, but between magic, aliens, millions of tragic points in time, and three really irritating teenagers, any oaths he’d taken seem lifetimes away - and he dislikes being reminded of it enough to ignore the hurt in the kid’s face, the way he’s had to ignore so much else to do the things no one else can.

Oh good, I'm glad! I've never written Dr Strange before and would have said I didn't really have a lot of feelings about him, but it was such a good prompt! Surely that does nag at him, at least a little bit.
