What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

Any, any, professional mermaids (i.e. wearing a mermaid tail costume)

Apparently there is such thing as being a professional mermaid, and one has been hired to be on-set of Jing Jing’s latest movie; this is news to her on the first shooting day, considering the mermaid in the movie, last Jing Jing heard, is supposed to be CGI-ed in, post-production.

“In the day I’m one of the actors for the Little Mermaid at Shanghai Disneyland and I also model for fantasy photoshoots,” Ai Li says upon introducing herself to Jing Jing.

“The idea is that the mermaid will still be largely CGI, Jing Jing,” the director says, “but more mo-cap than completely CGI, so Ai Li will both do the mo-cap and be there for you to interact with so you at least won’t be acting with air.”

She hates the fake tail - it's too tight around her waist, and the material rubs against her skin - but it's part of the gig, no matter how much she wished it wasn't, and she's obligated to wear it for now.

There are plenty of ways to make money, they'd told her when she first arrived, but never expected it would come to this...degradation; she never expected to have to pretend like some kind of monster, but she quickly learned that people believe what they want, and still fear what is unfamiliar.

When her work shift is over, and she's moved to an unnoticed part of the beach, she sheds both the artificial tail and her own legs, allowing her natural tail - so much more beautiful and comfortable than the costume - to soak in the sea water, and longs for the day she no longer has to hide who she is.

I love this so much!!

Michiru takes a deep breath and plunges down into the water, making a splashy show of it. After a moment she blinks the stinging out of her eyes and looks through the glass of her performance aquarium. Are they here, are they- there!

She waves, beaming like a beauty queen. Clinging to Mamoru's sleeve, Chibiusa waves back.

Helping him with the curse had seemed like a good idea at the time, but as Ursula saw Rumple now, she struggled not to punch him in the face.

If she really had to be a children’s entertainer as her cursed alter ego, did it really have to involve wearing a goddamn mermaid costume, the tail she was forced to wear every day reminding her of her past as a mermaid and the betrayal by Hook and by her father in their desire to steal her singing voice?

This plan to make sure villains got their happy ending had better be good, because Ursula was done with faking a smile as she posed for photos with annoying little brats.

Erik stares at Charles on his television, giving some limp speech about mutant-man togetherness that Erik has muted after the first few minutes of because he does not want his neighbors to think he's a senile old man; he's learned long ago not to attract attention from one's neighbors, and arguing with a television is the very definition of senile old man, which he is not.

He's still a beautiful man, Erik thinks, chopping vegetables as he watches the news on mute; time has preserved him well -- and knowing it's a bad idea, he turns the volume back on, just to hear the once-familiar timbre of his voice.

Thankfully none of the neighbors call as Erik chops with a heavier hand, bashing the carrots to bits as he fumes.

Oooh this is really cool!

Oh, Erik, honey, I'm pretty sure that this counts as torturing yourself. I do love the idea of him doing something so mundane while just pining and fuming all at once. Thanks for the fill.

The boss scans his eyes heavenward, or as close as one gets in hell; he stares for a long moment, long enough she hates him, and then turns towards her.

"Seems so," he says quiet, and gives her no more, and she tries not to resent him for that either.

Oh, just go shatter my heart, why don't you. Eurydice and Hades taking solace in each other because it's all either of them have right now--ugh, I could cry. This is lovely, thank you for the beautiful fill.

Haleth tilted her chin at the Elf lord, who gazed at her people with pitying eyes as he noted the numbers of their slain and maimed and the destruction of their homesteads; she wanted no man’s pity, be he Elf or Man, and her spine stiffened when his gaze came to rest on her: She was bloodied and bruised, more wounds than a person, surely a pitiful sight to one of the Eldar, but she would bear herself with pride—yet instead of pity, she thought she read something else in his gaze, something that made her look him evenly in the eyes and straighten her shoulders, something that made her sense that he saw her as an equal.

Crozier, thick with fever and those awful agitating shakes, recoils from Thomas’s tending. “Don’t want your pity.”

“Tough luck, that,” Thomas chirps while smoothing hair from his patient’s running brow. “Or should I go, leave you in peace?”

A clutching hand, a flash of panic in unfocused eyes, and Thomas smiles—the captain doesn’t know if he’s here or there right now, but wherever his delirium takes him, he wants Thomas by his side.

Alucard jerked at the low voice, scrubbing his sleeve over his face and struggling to even out his hitching breaths before meeting Trevor's gaze; he was glad for Trevor to be here, to break into the solitude and the twisted spikes his memory had become, but he didn't want-

People pity Edmund for all the wrong things: poor thing, he was born to be a bastard, of course he’s rough and lecherous, just look at his mother, just look at his zodiac, of course he couldn’t help being a slut. But he knows that if anyone made him weak to the flesh it was a father who knew he could get away with it and didn’t care which maid’s life he ruined in the process; and if anyone made him bitter it was a society that told him he’d never amount to anything and made him itch to prove them wrong.

Love is a scam, of course, but it’s all he wants, and if the heat of bodies is what it takes to silence his desire, then he will keep seeking it out, one dishonest kiss at a time.

Whoa! This is fantastic; I love Edmund's characterization here, all the anger and determination.

Nat glances across the quad to the guy in question, tries not to smirk at the smouldering look she's getting back; "Steve from my history class knows him, says his name is James but everyone calls him Bucky."

"He seems super-intense and kinda wild to me," Pepper said softly as they pass by, but Nat only smiles wider, looking back over her shoulder at Bucky still, "Hmm, I hope so."

“Oh yeah, Dad was always disappearing for one reason or another,” Rudolf says with a chuckle, “but it didn’t mean anything and he definitely wasn’t dancing with butterflies in the rose garden, or any of the other rumors the servants like to spread.”

The wind cuts across whatever he was saying like a dancer stealing someone else’s partner away, and his siblings and their spouses shift in their seats, discomfited by how it seems alive, and aware, and patient.

“I – I mean – it’s not like any of us really believes in witches, right?”

ooh i love the description of the wind, ‘like a dancer stealing someone else’s partner away,’ and how just that moment is enough to introduce unease and uncertainty into rudolf’s casual joking skepticism.

thank you! i always love those moments in the game where the sound cue cuts in on the scene when you're expecting just more dialogue, and i remember it being particularly pointed and chilling in this scene. it's especially fun here, because rudolf habitually puts on a performance, in part because of kinzo's habitual negligence.

"It's just so loud." Kin said apologetically, his voice tiny.

Keisuke smothered a groan as he rolled over, opening his arm and smiling when Kin burrowed into it, soft and warm. "It's just the wind, baby."

"It's so loud," Kin said again, shaking his head, one hand creeping over Keisuke's chest, clinging to him, "it's always quiet in the tank."

Once, he would have spoken to his brother with honest respect, if not quite with affection. (Tizoc is a hard man to like, and they’ve never been especially close.) Once, his brother would have responded with fondness in his own voice. (At least, until Teomitl did something foolish, like fall in love with a peasant.)

But then there was a knife at Acatl’s throat, that peasant’s daughter spoken in a vile hiss, blood in the streets of their city and on the rocks at Meztitlan, plague rattling through his chest and the horrible certainty that Tizoc was unworthy rattling through his mind.

“It’s been a while since you’ve deigned to speak with me,” Tizoc says now.

He keeps his eyes downcast, so his Revered Speaker can’t see the expression in them. “Forgive me, my lord.”

Between them, there’s only the rustling of the wind.

When she was a child, she would dream of a boy, golden-haired and sun-kissed; her shadow self, who showed her all kinds of things Alderaan never had: dunes and sand, banthas, pod-races zooming over her head.

Somehow, it had taken them years to piece together the uncomfortable truth of those childhood dreams.

Now, with Luke so long gone, and her family pulled so far apart, Leia closes her eyes and breathes deep, and tries to summon him back once more.

So many emotions in a few words.

Most nights, Luke dreams of the desert – he flies over it or he walks through a sandstorm and often there’s a girl there. Sometimes the girl takes his hands and shows him the mountains, and then Luke stares and stares because he’s never seen mountains like this – taller than the sky and stretching as wide as the horizon – not even on the Holonet.

Uncle Owen tells him dreams are just your brain getting all its crazy out, but aunt Beru says they are about hope and desire and Luke thinks that’s much more likely because he definitely wants to see the mountains someday- and most of all, more than he wants anything else in the world, Luke really wants to meet the girl.

Ever since she was young, Leia has had a recurring dream about a desert world.

She dreams of walking through the sands, putting up her hood to block the harsh light of twin suns, and in the distance she can just see a light-haired boy about her age, and she would swear that he was looking right at her-

Every time she wakes, she remembers nothing.

She’s so close and yet so far - really wonderful take on this!

Maybe when they first met he thought she was the girl of his dreams because that was exactly what she was - literally.

There had always been a presence, no face, no name, but something, someone, a missing piece, the other half, just slightly out of reach when he woke each morning.

He never could have predicted a twin sister, but Luke wasn't at all sorry to have Leia in her rightful role in his life at last.

I love them figuring out what they really are to each other and finding their place in each other’s lives. Great job!

The sister is born with her eyes wide open, and ever after, she dreams of a woman who is beautiful and kind, but very sad, and she doesn’t know why. The brother wails, eyes screwed shut, and never knows his mother at all, the great tragedy of his life. But he is the one who hears her say that there is good in Anakin, and three decades later he dreams that he can feel it too.

I really liked this take on the prompt! It's lovely and heartbreaking to see each of them with their own different connections to Padme.

thank you! i once saw a really good bit of meta about why luke doesn't remember his mother at all but leia remembers her face, and the answer they came up with is just that her eyes were open and his weren't, and it really adds to both their characters.

She dreams of a boy with the sun at his back, he hurts to look at, this boy and yet she cannot look away. He dreams of a girl, framed by more vegetation than he can imagine, her eyes dare him to look away and he finds he cannot. They dream of each other, twins without their other half, they remember as babies and dream as children. But as childhood melts away so too does dreams and he remembers only the vegetation, and she the sun.

Very lovely and poetic - I like how they each keep one strong image of their dreams as they grow.

ASOIAF, any, gods

The first time Catelyn can remember entering a Sept, she is a little girl with a mother as well as a father and sister. Riverrun’s Sept is grand and imposing, the statues of the Seven beautiful and polished and the room is filled with the smell of incense. When Catelyn looks up, at the ceilings that stretch higher and higher still, she feels small and breathless, and she finally understands the hushed silence that blankets the room. Her mother smiles and squeezes her hand, and afterwards Catelyn asks her a million question.

As a married woman and mother herself, her Sept is small and understated. Yet, it is filled with the warmth of her family and the love of the husband who built it for her, which is slow to grow but so, so worth it. Catelyn never truly gets used to her husbands gods, just like she knows Ned will never be comfortable in a Sept, but she comes to respect them all the same. And slowly, over time, they wriggle into her heart and claim a little corner there, adjoining the vast space that is taken up by her husband and children.

The same cannot be said for the Drowned God, who she observes with apprehension and disdain. And then he takes everything she holds dear, and there is nothing left in her heart for him but hate.

Catelyn’s life is filled with old gods and new, but in her final moments she thinks not of the gods she worshiped or feared, but of the husband she loved and lost.

And then Catelyn dies, and all she knows is red.

Oh wow, this is awesome! I love seeing Cat’s evolving relationship with her faith, how her relationships to different gods range from awe to warmth to anger in accordance to the different stages of her life.

Daenerys never knows the gods of Westeros.

Her first true introduction to religious practices came from the Dothraki customs, and she binds herself to them willingly or unwillingly when she eats of the horse’s heart and is told her son is to be The Stallion Who Mounts The World.

Her dragons were born in fire, yes, just as Melisandre said, but they were born in a Dothraki fire. A funeral Pyre. Perhaps as dragons her children were forever tied to the Lord of Light, but Dany waited eagerly for her Sun-And-Stars to return to her with their son.

Irri and Jhiqui teach her the ways of the Dothraki, slowly but certainly and as she had since her marriage she accepts them into her own life. She heeds the advice of the Blood-Of-Her-Blood and learns more from them than Viserys ever bothered to teach her. Dany knows safety from her time under the Mother of Mountains, happiness that didn’t last long when she turned to other gods and Blood Magic to save Drogo.

Tyrion tries to teach her of the Seven and she is reluctant to listen, Jon tells her of the Old Gods and she shies away. She lets Melisandre speak of her dragons, but for herself turns to Rommo and the other jaqqa rhan.

I never see enough about Daenerys' relationship to Dothraki culture, and I really enjoyed your take on it! I enjoy her binding herself to the Dothraki and their gods and then finding her power and identity through them.

Thank you! There is definitely not enough out there that acknowledges just how much her early experiences with the Dothraki shaped her. Part of that is the show's choice of killing off Irri in Qarth and not having any of her remaining Khalasar show up as recurring characters after the second season.
