What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

He tells the truth when asked - I got stung when all the insects got out - and suffers through an irritable inspection of the places he'd been stung or bitten, and the following decree that as he was already mostly healed, he didn't need any aftercare for them. He didn't mind. It was worth it to see the Professor shriek and jump and run around the labs, especially since he never figured out that it was Sephiroth who opened the glass containment units and shook them until the hives erupted.

Jyn feels only a bit guilty asking him when he's high on painkillers in Yavin's medbay, but this is important.

"You keep saying my name," she tells Cassian, "you like saying it or something?"

"It's a good name, Jyn," he says, with a smile like the sun after the longest night, and she thinks that she might just get used to being called her old familiar name again.

Not even my canon, but omg I squeed at "with a smile like the sun after the longest night".

It's a good fandom to get into. Lots of witty banter and absurd situations taken normally.

We all know Llewellyn would win any sort of contest about who has the best title.

When asked what character tu made up his name, Yu Tu always answered, tu as in qiantu, for prospect, outlook, because that was always how his parents used to explain his name, demonstrating only too clearly their hopes for him. For the most part, he had never failed them in that regard; his prospects had always been bright, shining with his intelligence. Then, it suddenly was not, darkened and clouded by the realisation that his intelligence and hard work only took him so far, and indeed idealised dreams did not line one’s pockets, and when that made one sleep uneasy, even the most intelligent would not be able to navigate the brightest of ways.

Bunny had a thousand different ways to say Kotetsu's name, it seemed; each unique inflection imparting an entirely different phrase—sometimes it meant "Stop being ridiculous," sometimes it meant "we're going to be late if you don't move," and sometimes it meant "be quiet" or "don't touch that" or "please stop talking about our private lives while we're on live television."

But sometimes it meant "don't leave me" or "that was a very kind thing you just did" or "I need you" or "I miss you."

And sometimes—like right now, when Bunny was curled up against him and letting Kotetsu play with his hair—it meant "I love you, I love you, I love you."

Tobirama hid his mouth behind his cup as he snickered, glancing down to see Madara's mischievous look, just visible through his wild hair.

For those who don't know, Tobirama and his brothers' names translate to: space between two pillars, space between two doors, space between rooftiles, and space between floorboards. Their father's name can mean space between altars.

Alexander presumed the etymology of ‘Goodsir’ was far removed from the obvious, though it humoured him how appropriate a name it was once he got to know the man who possessed it.

“I wish you’d call me Harry,” Goodsir professed later, a hopeful glint in his eyes that would warm Alexander through even if he found himself wandering the ice barefoot.

"For Wangji's sake, he will be Lan Yuan." His voice broke. "What, after all, is in a name at his age?"

Uncle was silent, and Xichen was the one to answer his own question.

I just finished watching the series (I'm always behind) and am totally taken by it. This ficlet hits the spot, it covers such an emotional journey!

I've done more for this than the other fandoms, but then it's my most recent and these were my first go at a rather scary (because of the cultural nuances) one...

The series is really lovely, I've seen and like/love other c-dramas but The Untamed is still my favourite.

I also have some vague ideas for stories, but as you say, my ignorance of the cultural nuances has put me off.

I loved the series, I think I'll just enjoy it as is for the time being, I can live with plot holes and unexplained phenomena ;) I don't want to water down the impression by going back to source material, like the book--which in translation at least, seems to be just way too long serialized pedestrian writing.

From what I have gathered, it is layered and quite well written in Chinese (and the characterization os great) but needs a good professional translation, and the current one being done has been criticised.

I have gathered a lot of the dfferences in the various adaptations through fannish osmosis, but the drama is really my only real source. And I LOVE most of the actors.

Robin ruminates on it on their way back—names, and how she could have possibly remembered Chrom’s name before her own, why she suddenly remembered hers, what it all means. She remembers stabbing lightning into him and hearing his name like her own heartbeat—Chrom, Chrom, Chrom—but, no, it’s impossible, because he stands healthy and hale before her and claims they are strangers. That doesn’t feel true, but it doesn’t feel like a lie either, and Robin wonders if her thoughts are always this flighty and fickle. Perhaps she was named for a bird for a reason.

Konan runs her knuckles down his jaw as she lays sprawled atop of him, musing on the coarse shade of a stubble that scrapes her skin; Kisame observes her as she does, smiling when her eyes meet his.

"Funny how a beard can get me closer to my namesake, isn't it? Sharks have sandpaper for skin."

She hums, palming the would-be whiskers once again before propping herself on her elbow to lay a kiss on his cheek -and adds truthfully: "I was thinking of persimmons."

The humans push a plate towards her; she aims a pronounced eye roll at them, but she picks up a slice of the dark brown bread-like substance and puts it in her mouth anyway.

It’s soft as a cloud and perfectly moist, with a thin layer of buttercream frosting, something so delicately sweet it must be from heaven, and she decides, maybe humans aren’t so bad.

lol! I think of Glory from Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I read this :)

haven’t gotten around to watching buffy yet but based on that alone Glory sounds like a cool character!

She had spent all afternoon in the kitchen, and now she watched eagerly as Rumplestiltskin took a generous bite of the chocolate cake on which she'd labored. The cloying mess coated his tongue in what tasted like charcoal mixed with the dredges of the Evermire Swamp, but he forced himself to grin and mumble, "Delicious, dearie." Belle's pure and beautiful smile was worth the price of the magic to cure his upcoming stomach ache.

"Well, at least we've learned something," Carson said mildly, watching the scene in the gateroom.

Rodney looked at him incredulously. "And that gem of knowledge might be -?"

They gazed down at the Stargate, at the scientists and Marines milling around it helplessly, at Sheppard being pissed and yelling, at Bates arguing that it was all the geeks' fault, at Teyla calling up to the top of the Gate in that sweet reasonable tone that... wasn't working, at Ronon sprawled on the floor and laughing his dreadlocked head off, at Elizabeth with her armed crossed and her disapproval radiating out towards one and all...

And at the tiny, tiny furry creature hanging by five tentacles from the top of the Gate while happily breaking off bits of cake with the others, popping them in its razortoothed mouth and squealing with sugar-rushed glee at everyone below.

"Elizabeth's birthday cake should have been better protected, for sure and certain." Carson shrugged. "I'll be surprised if Dr Zelenka is managing to cram the whole of it into that tiny body, and I'm not looking forward to any reactions over the next few hours, but it's a fact that even shapeshifted into squidapoids, we humans do one and all really, really love our chocolate."

Oh dear, a sugar-high squidapoid!! Brilliant, lol! :D

Robin’s taste for sweets slowly comes to light as she becomes accustomed to the rich food of the palace. Chrom watches her face alight with pleasure at the sight of their dessert, grimly remembering how hungry and lean she looked when they first met, how happy she was for simply a stomach full of greasy, gamey bear meat. Palace life has softened her figure, filling Chrom with pride that he can provide a comfortable life for Robin, especially as her appetite has only continued to grow with her condition.

“You can have mine, love,” he says, nudging his own slice of cake towards his pregnant, beloved wife. Robin looks caught between joy and refusal, opening her mouth to reject the gesture, and he meets it with a smile that turns her to bashful, glowing acceptance of his indulgent affection.

Naruto tilted his head, watching Sakura bend over Hanae, doing . . . something that made the baby giggle, hands curled steadyingly around her sides.

"What- What are you doing?" he asked tentatively, and Sakura looked up at him with surprise, straightening.

"Butterfly kisses!" Sakura said, and when Naruto frowned, confused, she shook her head with a little laugh and beckoned him. "Come here, I'll teach you."

He jerked his head back, his ear still ringing. "Ow! Don't scream in Daddy's ear, Kaede, that hurts!"

Tomoe hugged him from behind and laughed softly. "Maybe next time, you should try tickling her from a safer distance."

He didn’t know what a butterfly was, they didn’t have those in the Underworld, but after he met her he wanted to learn more about them, wanted to write about them but especially anything and everything she told him.

When he asked, the petite little goddess with her colour-changing hair giggled: “Butterfly kisses, see?” And when she fluttered those long lashes as roses trickled out of the tips of her fingers he knew he would write about this too.

“Luz,” Amity giggled, “there’s a butterfly on your nose.”

“Where?” Luz stumbled and tripped backward, startling the bright blue creature and making it flying away.

“It’s gone now, but it was right…here.” Amity presses her lips to the tip of Luz’s nose, and watches her girlfriend’s face turn as red as her own.

People don't think Eric has it in him to be sweet and gentle, but they don't see him the way I see him, his index finger drawing circles on the curve of my hip while his lips flutter against my skin, on the nape of my neck, between my shoulder blades, in the small of my back, until just the slightest touch makes me squirm and want him more than I've ever wanted anything in my life. "Let's go back to sleep," Kasamatsu said. "And next time, only wake me up if it's a real emergency."

MCU, any, to the moon and back

His front porch might be his favorite place, in the house, in the world, anywhere he's ever been—the Egyptian pyramids, the grand city of Babylon, name a place, he was there—it's a magical place. He sits there, in the morning with a cup of tea; in the afternoons when he's waiting for Jack to come back with the school bus; at night, when even Ben has given up on staying awake. He looks at the stars, and sometimes, he makes a wish.

He watches the moon, and he prays for Arishem, the skies, and all the other Gods worshipped by the people of this world to please let him have this for just a moment longer. Just another minute in the grand scheme of things, the lifetime of his husband and son.

Ah, Eternals is one MCU film I didn't see yet, but even reading this with no previous knowledge, I like it :)

Ohh, I hope you watch it sometime; I watched it yesterday so my head is full of the new characters, who I loved more than I cared about the story if I'm honest lol.

Ooh, clever! I wondered if people would take this prompt literally or not, because with MCU you could go either way. Love seeing Thor & Loki getting along and even having fun together :)

The air outside was thick as soup, so humid that Sam's skin felt wet the second he stepped out back. He spotted Bucky sitting on the edge of the porch, looking up at the waxing moon high overhead, holding a beer bottle loosely between his fingers.

Sam had asked him what he was thinking about, once. Bucky hadn't answered, but his mouth had gone flat and tight.

So this time Sam sits beside him and bumps their shoulders together, a companionable nudge. "You good?"

Bucky leans into him, and maybe it's Sam's imagination, but it looks like there's a hint of a smile on his face. "Yeah. I'm good."

While I don't actually ship these two, I still love this. That's good writing for you ;)

"It's about time," Natasha murmured against Bucky's lips, after they shared a long kiss at the end of the night, which Bucky finally realized was a date when she took his hand on the way home. "I have been waiting for you to do that."

Instead of replying, understanding the meaning behind her words, he just kissed her again, more than ready to show her exactly how much he wanted it.

And as she kissed him back, he realized that she was perfectly fine with his approach.

He may have been slow, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Omega looks back at the Marauder and considers the carbon scoring on the port side, souvenir of Exegol and half a dozen other firefights along the way. "Nowhere special," she says, and slings her bag over her shoulder; "Nowhere special at all."

He still didn't speak; those parted lips did not presage speech. No, it was something else, something Parker recognised intimately. Those parted lips were the click of a tumbler, the turning of a lock, an invitation into a private space heretofore unexplored.
Parker never could resist that particular flavour of seduction. She pressed her lips to Eliot's, slid her tongue into his mouth as smoothly as a lockpick. The sound he made she trapped in her own throat; secret, and stolen, and hers.

“Traitors, darling,” he thinks he hears her murmur under her breath, the voice of a vanished queen in a dream just out of hearing; but then, the thought’s gone as soon as it came, and her hand grasps his tight, her voice her own again, bright and only a bit brittle as she says, “But look, the flowers are blooming - you can hardly even see where it happened any longer,” and she’s right - the gouge riven in the earth is filled now, spilling over with white and gold and red, blurring to one before his eyes.

Six years have passed in the blink of an eye, and Benja sees that his daughter has grown from a girl into a young woman—a leader in her own right—in what, for him, was the span of time between one breath and the next.

He is not far from her side as they navigate the reunion of the tribes, but it is not until much later that night that they are alone, and he takes her hands to ask her, "What has happened these past six years?"

A dozen emotions seem to pass over Raya's face, and then she collapses against him, sobbing, and all Benja can do is hold her and mourn the years they've lost.

Oh, I love this - Raya finally has a chance to let go and lean on her dad again.

They had the advantage in numbers, and weaponry, and height; Jazz sauntered into the middle of the courtyard like an actor taking the stage, hid his nerves with a challenging grin and a cocked hip. "Twice in a rotation, boys? I'm flattered," he called.

"Maybe you're not as good as everyone says," Brawl jeered from a doorway four stories up. "Fell for the old weapons-cache trick like an amateur."

"Oh, did I? Huh." Jazz tracked the movements of the other Combaticons out of the sides of his visor, pretending to keep his focus on Brawl. He knew damn well Megatron had put a kill-on-sight order on his head, but the Combaticons were loose cannons enough that they might try their luck with live capture. They were gonna land their afts in spark-lockup if they weren't careful. "Welp, guess I'm outta luck." He snapped his fingers. "Oh, wait-"

Vortex was right behind him - he turned, slapped a handheld EMP mine right over the heliform's spark chamber, and a flash of blue and a numbing shock later he had an armload of paralyzed Vortex. He pivoted, dragging the deadweight with him - lucky you, Vortex, I'm such a good dancer I can make anyone look good - and Brawl's impulsive laserfire hit Vortex's shoulder instead of Jazz's head. Brawl swore and Jazz laughed, backstepping and turning again to dump Vortex on an unprepared Swindle.

Now the fun really began.

"We've almost got the slag-ass," Jazz announced, much perkier than his leader despite Sparkplug knowing for a fact he'd been awake nearly twice as long.

"It's called a tarrasque," Ratchet grumbled from behind his DM screen.

Next to him, Prowl rattled his fist and cast the impressively upsized d20 upon the table. "Hah!" he crowed. "That's a crit!"

Ratchet's mouth thinned in repressed amusement. "...how do you want to do this?" he asked, and the table erupted in cheers.

Prowl waited until the celebration quieted down before answering. "I'm thinking," the tactician stated calmly, "that I hit the big monster with my sword until it's good and dead."

Cheers and groans in equal measure met his statement. Sparkplug shook his head - at least the big lugs were having fun, but he was still making a mental note to prod Sideswipe into making a double batch of his hyperfuel brew later.

<3<3<3 Oh Ratchet would be a terrific GM... and Prowl really bad at roleplaying, but I'm so happy everyone has fun.

After they returned to England, Susan didn’t know how to convey to her siblings that nothing felt like it mattered anymore.

She went to parties, went out with boys, did as well as she needed to at school in order to avoid being noticed, never at the top or the bottom of the class. After all, what would being top of the class get her here? Certainly not a crown - not even a university education.

She could go to Bletchley - she certainly had the skills. But where would that lead her, except to another life of secrets, another double life? And it would all be for a country that no longer felt like her own, instead of the one she had loved with her whole being.

So she let everyone around her take - take her smiles, take her laughter, take her pretty face as an invitation, take the Susan she became at face value because they didn’t know the difference. After enough time, she even had her siblings fooled. And somewhere deep down, that hurt, but making them believe the charade had been her choice.

Aslan had already taken everything from her; it didn’t matter who took the pieces of her that were left.

Pressing bare knees together, Sephiroth tried not to tug his skirt down against the increasingly cheeky breeze tugging at the hem of his borrowed sundress. At least the barely-there shoulder straps meant his arms didn't strain against any sleeves too small for him, but still, he rather missed his leather trousers.

Arm fearlessly hooked through his elbow, Aerith beamed up at him. "I know I said it before, but you look adorable," she informed him, and Sephiroth mentally deep-sixed his desire for the protective restriction of leather.

Sephiroth doesn't understand how the girl behind the glass can still wear her emotions so plainly after all the things she and her mother have been made to endure. Her eyes remind him of his own, flat green mirrors that reflect all who approach, except there's still a spark within her that whispers of joy and aspiration and the belief that she will someday find a better place beyond the violence of these walls.

"Do you hate it here too?" She asks him, and he loathes the question almost as much as he loathes her for asking it; his emotions, it would seem, are not so far gone after all.

Jingrui’s birthdays were always grand affairs, celebrations full of laughter and love from two families. It was all enough for Yujin to spend at least half a shichen each year on the day feeling envious, or so he thought. Now, of course Yujin understood; each year, Jingrui’s birthday and the accompanying grand party represented another sigh of relief from Grand Princess Liyang that her son had lived through yet another year under her husband’s roof.

Sometimes, Yujin wondered whether his father even remembered his birthday. Starting from when he was old enough to ride alone to Xie Manor to spend the day with Jingrui and Xie Bi instead, his father either hid away in his alchemy room or, later, didn’t bother returning to Jinling at all. Now, of course Yujin understood; he was born on this day of reunited lovers, and yet his very existence a daily reminder to his father that he would never again reunite with the woman he loved, that in both this world and perhaps even the next, Yan Que and Lin Yueyao were forever more lost to each other.

This year, however, his father remained in the manor on Yujin’s birthday, and Yujin didn’t ride to to the Xie’s (well, he would go to Liyang Manor, now) at first light, damning all appearances of politeness. However, when a servant came into the room where Yujin and his father were breakfasting, to announce the arrival of Su Zhe at their gates, Yujin almost told the servant to turn the man away, really damning all appearances of politeness. For though he once so eagerly hinted to Sir Su that he expected attentions on his birthday, now looking back at the birthday gift that Sir Su presented Jingrui with just barely three months ago, Yujin wasn’t sure a gift from the house of Su should be that coveted after all.

"Tadokorocchi?" Yuusuke opened the door and stared, disbelieving, at his friend standing on his doorstep—his friend who was supposed to be in Japan, not in England, and in fact had been in Japan not even two days ago, Yuusuke knew for a fact.

"Makishima!" Tadokoro held up the box in his arms—from a bakery, it looked like—and grinned. "Aren't you going to let us in? It's wet out here!"

Yuusuke moved aside automatically and opened the door wider. "Us? Who's—"

Tadokoro shouldered his way in and kicked off his shoes. "I brought some friends!"

Before Yuusuke could say anything, the rest of the team shuffled in behind him, bitching about the weather and calling out overlapping greetings—Onoda, Imaizumi, Kinjou, Naruko, and—

"Maki-chaaaaaaan!"

Toudou tackled him, peppering kisses all over his face, and it took Yuusuke a solid thirty seconds to disentangle himself. "Toudou! What—how—"

"Surprise, Maki-chan!" Toudou jumped on him again. "Do you like your birthday present?"

"I—" Yuusuke looked around—at Tadokoro in the kitchen getting out plates, at the rest of the team dumping of their coats and loudly exploring, and finally back to Toudou. "Heh. Yeah, I do."

He didn't have the ingredients for a cake and he wasn't even sure he'd gotten the days right, but Frypan put extra eggs in the pan with some pieces of thick brown bread, and served them with a dollop of real butter that he'd been hoarding for a special occasion.

"Happy birthday, Minho," he said as he set the plate down in front of the other boy.

His knees felt weak and his stomach wobbled a bit when Minho smiled at him, but that smile made the teasing he was going to get from Newt later all worth it.

any, any, and you're not even here / on the coldest night of the year

There is a candle lit in the front window--Susan knows she's being ridiculous, but it reminds her of a story she only vaguely remembers someone telling her. Leave a candle burning in a window facing a path most likely to be tread and it'll lead the ones you most wish to come home back to you.

It's a silly story--and a waste of a good candle--and it must have come from a dream because for some reason she can only picture the story teller being a beaver. But still, the candle is lit and Susan sits next to it, wrapped up in a blanket with a cup of tea, watching the street.

It's silly and she knows it--no one came back from the train accident, not even back five years ago when it happened--and yet.

The candle still burns in the window, waiting.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” she tells him in between kissing the tears she’s certain he’d deny, “The seasons kept me trapped up there and I couldn’t make the autumn arrive no matter how I tried.”

Oh, I do love the concept of Hadestown freezing over. Also, oh, their reunion is just *chef's kiss*.

Madara stands just off the step of the engawa, snow collecting in his wild hair, watching the thick cloud cover and sparse snowflakes, and the way his breath fogs in the night of the coldest winter in years.

Coldest in more ways than one: the house behind him is empty and barren, with none of the painful memories of childhood ghosts but no particularly good memories either; the closest neighbors are too far for the light of their kitchens and dinner tables to shed any proper light on his house; the children run away from him in the streets - even Uchiha children - and he can do nothing but simmer in pain turned to counterproductive anger, remembering when his brothers and cousins used to run up to him fearlessly.

The first birthday after the death of a family member has always hit Madara hard, but now, standing alone in the unusual cold, he misses the warmth of his family the most.

One could not reasonably call Nassau cold, even in the dregs of January, yet a chill swept through Miranda down to the bone. Sitting by the fire, she drew no warmth from its flames; it was not due to the temperature that she shivered. The heat of bodies - one far away, the other yet further - was what she lacked, and in its absence she could do little else but pull her shawl tighter, pretending it was their arms, knowing it never would be again.

yeah, exactly! i have a wip where when the couple finally decides to move together they get a kitten and name her hestia because they've found a home in each other, and then when tragedy hits, she helps them both through the resulting emotional messes, because they have to stay alive to take care of her, even if they have trouble taking care of themselves or each other.

The first Winternight after the Silver Forest, Jullanar was far too busy to think further than a week into the future. Scrimping her way through the bitter East Oriolan winter as an unaccompanied young woman, in a province made tight-fisted and suspicious of strangers by the protracted siege of Galderon and the slowly spiraling civil unrest that the siege had touched off, was difficult enough. Doing so as a wanted outlaw (though she managed to keep that secret mostly under her hat -- aside from one brief indulgence in the wild lay to help some local highwaymen fleece a truly asinine Voonran notable on a grand tour of the Empire, which had won her a newer, more interesting hat) was even more demanding.

By the second winter, however, she was beginning to feel the weight of expectations looming over her future like the shadow of some great carrion bird -- all the narrow straits she had sidestepped and outrun for years, now gathering pace and lapping at her heels. She was safe (and known, and respected) within Galderon's walls, but once she finished her exams... oh she didn't technically need to return home to Fiella-by-the-Sea, but what kind of daughter and sister would she be to not at least visit? And she knew herself well enough to see that once she visited, once she set so much as a finger back into the strictures of her former life, it would be next to impossible to leave again.

Not without a friend. With Ayasha or Damian, Pali or Sardeet, Masseo or Pharia, Gadarved or Faleron, to say nothing of Fitzroy, she knew how to be brave, how to turn a moment of outrage into a steady flame that could withstand an empire's scorn, but on her own she was gnawingly certain she would fold.

She lit a candle at sunset, a fat beeswax pillar (no smoky tallow, not for this), and murmured, "White Lady, you who guard us through the winter dark, help me stand strong. I was born Jullanar Thistlethwaite, but I chose -- I choose -- to be Jullanar of the Sea. Help me know myself. Help me remember."

For a breathless, scorching moment the wick flared like a falling star. Jullanar sprang back, patting her eyebrows with reflexes trained by years of Fitzroy's more experimental spells, which had a distressing tendency to explode. (Fire was always his truest element.)

"Thank you," she whispered, unsure whether she meant the words for the Lady or her absent friend.

Either way, she would keep faith.

She promised. That's the one thing he remembers, as he curls up beneath the old horse blanket and watches his breath mist the air, and listens to the murmur of Glenn and Maggie's voices in the next room. She said they'd be together, take care of each other, and then they took her and he couldn't find her and he failed, and now he's all alone.

She's already won her freedom and her memories back from Yubaba, regardless of how this final test goes.

It's obvious that none of the pigs in front of her are her parents, but her memories play in front of her before she says so; her father's approving comments about the Empire's glory days, her mother's desire for a strong man to take care of her, both of their cheers for the man in the park agitating for them to "take back what was theirs."
