What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating. The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first. I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety. I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.

First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page. You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two. It's fine.
You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite at bit after about 2 weeks and especially once we open a new post because this one is approaching 4,500 comments.
Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before. People do it all the time.

Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?
No. Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want. It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt. Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it. Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it. Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!

How long will it go?
The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 13, 2022. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long. (There were a bunch of new posts to the 2021 3SF this week!)

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?

I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware. In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present (and much more). I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment, protect yourself, and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts? That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users. So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post. If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

i wrote this prompt with you in mind because i knew you'd do something incredible with it, but i was still unprepared for it to be goneril, gosh this is perfect!! 'a girl who was once a princess, married off to a loveless unhappy ending, has fewer choices still'. just. yeah. yeah, that's goneril's whole deal, and then the only way she sees to have edmund is to take him.

"I'll show it to you again," said Haru, unflattening the creases of the palm-sized square, "so don't look so scared of it."

Daisuke's paper remained untouched on their table, thin and near translucent, still carrying its potential of becoming a crane.

"I'm not," he said, then kept quiet, because he did remember the steps; he'd always been a quick study, except now Haru's fingers were patient and precise, letting Daisuke study them, instead.

I don't know the canon, but I love the details of the folding, and I love the details of the relationship, and the quietness of the intimacy. And oh, Daisuke, pretending he doesn't know how to fold the crane! <3 Three sentences and I ship it already.

Once, Rhajat's parents had folded one thousand paper cranes, one thousand wishes for safe passage for the ragtag company they called an army. Left to her own devices in her little corner of the Deeprealms, Rhajat is quick to pick up the hobby, folding talisman paper into wishes; it's only one thousand, she thinks, only that, and then they'll come home.

But one thousand soon becomes two, then three, then four: wishes become curses as home becomes a cage.

I'm not familiar with the fandom, but ohh, that's a perfect sharp little sting.

Sylvaine selected a slightly shimmery white sheet and began folding, with deft, elegant movements; Yuuta watched with wide eyes as it became a little horse.

Yuuta thought of Joshua riding up to collect him, resplendent on an elegant white horse, and ducked his head, cheeks warming.

He startled as Sylvaine held the little paper horse out to him with a knowing smile, and felt himself blushing even more . . . but he took it with a murmur of thanks.

The day Zack Fair learned that Sephiroth had a sense of humor was also the day they all learned that Sephiroth was being held up as some kind of hero: one of the higher-ups fresh off the boat from Midgar came swaggering into the SOLDIER tent to cast down a newspaper on the tac table, jovially demanding, "There, General, what do you make of that?"

Sephiroth held the paper up, critically examining the headline that proclaimed him Hero of the Wutai War, then proceeded to lay it flat out and start folding. Corner to corner, pleated, then turned partially inside-out, until at last Sephiroth set his work on the table and announced, "I made a duck."

*DELIGHTED SCREAMING*

They fold paper boats for Carnivale, each man naming his before it’s strung with the others. A superstitious few decline their leaf of paper while most accept it gladly, scratching their initials to these small tokens of hope.

They all burn.

His father taught him how to fold so he would understand the need for precision and clarity, and to understand that anything short of exact was unacceptable.

He's already folded his heart so many times that he's not sure what will come out in the end - ladybug, dragon, or butterfly.

Ivan stared at the stack of thin, square pieces of paper in front of him, and then at the pile of misshapen origami creations just to his right.

"Huh." Rock Bison leaned over his shoulder. "I'd have thought you'd be better at that."

"I didn't choose my name because of my ability to do origami," Ivan muttered, and pulled out another sheet of paper to try again.

Ivan's hero name is Origami Cyclone. When I saw the prompt, I couldn't resist having Origami trying origami. XD

John watches Matt's fingers flip and fold the paper, surprisingly nimble, and imagines those fingers playing at his ribcage, sliding over the curve of his hip, dipping into the gap between-

"It's a seahorse!" Matt announces, holding the paper aloft.

John coughs and mumbles something about Matt still being high from the morphine, and carefully turns over in his hospital bed. For reasons.

"Folding it by hand?" Kisame grins at the glossy, gray square in her hands and at how she folds and creases and tucks in its edges, her nose almost pressed to the paper.

Konan replies, "I don't always weaponize my hobbies."

After a few silent minutes, she forms a seal; the paper shark swims his way in mid air, before gliding back and nestling into her hands.

The Arcane, Vander and Silco, What could have been

They follow his every move, watch his every step, and so Silco does not halt too long when he sees him lying there. He does not falter, but crouches instead. He takes a little girl's hand in his and pretends not to need a minute to compose himself. He looks at Vander's face, stuck in a never-to-end sleep, and internally snarls at the memories that come forth.

He turns his attention to the girl. He couldn't keep Vander from betraying him, but he can keep this child, his child. He can raise her to be and believe everything they should have been and fought for, together. He will.

Wheel of Time (TV), Moiraine &/ Lan, in this life and the next

The despair is strong, and for once in his life, Lan is losing hope, yet she needs him and he cannot lose sight of that. His hands slide into her hair, and Moiraine dips in against his chest, letting herself fold smaller than she has felt in years.

"I am here, now, always, and ever," he pledges as he holds her, daring the Wheel to take him from her this life or next.

“Haven’t you wondered,” Liandrin says, in a voice that’s low and anything but hollow, one finger tracing down the arc of Moiraine’s cheekbone, cold as steel, “a pretty, cossetted little spy like you - what it feels like to be used, to be completely helpless in the power of another?”

It washes over Moiraine like a tide; the one power sparking just below Liandrin’s skin, the red-hot wash of her rage, barely contained, the deep, trembling core of fear it hides, and - Yes, she wants to say, wants to give in, wants to drown under that poisoned weight. But - she is a spy, after all, and well used to veiling her feelings, so there’s no lie in the blue of her eyes when she opens them and lets the word never fall from her lips like a sneer, rather than the regret it is.

Aaaah this is amazing! the red-hot wash of her rage and the play with Moiraine's eye color/allegiance color. So great! These two and their inability to be truthful, even when they cannot lie. Beautiful. 🥰

"I could cook a better dinner than this, if they let us start fires with the Power," Siuan mutters when she's sure no one is listening. "No one in Tar Valon knows how to cook fish."

"Siuan," Moiraine hisses urgently, "you mustn't."

Of course, when the smoke rising from the novices' quarters reaches the attention of the Mistress of Novices, Moiraine claims it was all her idea.

Awwww! Yes! The fisherman's daughter knows what's what! This is so sweet and fun and exactly the kind of look at their connection when they were younger that I really want to see. Of course, Moiraine claimed it was her 🥰

Aaron woke up just as they were passing through Wilmington, Delaware. He straightened in his seat, blinking to adjust to the midday sun pouring into the windows.

"How are you feeling?"

Derek's soft inquiry pulled at Aaron, their earlier conflict slowly fading into memory. "Okay. Better, I mean," he clarified. "The nap helped."

"Good."

They worked hard to keep work stress from spilling into the time they spent together off hours. But sometimes, it couldn't be avoided.

"Back in New York, you said that my opinion mattered to you."

Aaron saw Derek's forearm's flex as his grip tightened on the wheel but he kept staring straight ahead.

"Well, it does," Derek replied tightly. "And?"

"What I feel for you goes beyond the job, Derek," Aaron said. "You want my opinion? Fine, here it is: you are an amazing profiler and with a little more time, you could run the New York office." He shifted just enough so that he could give his full attention. "And I'm not ready to lose you."

Derek spared him a pained glance before turning his attention back to the road. "We need to really talk don't we?"

"I'd say so."

Oh God I love this. Mayhem is such a good Hotch/Morgan episode and my shipping heart cannot help but go back to it as a turning point for them. This hits all the right notes. I love that he fell asleep in the car, he's in such bad shape 🥺 and that they're having a more open conversation for once. So gooood. Thank you 💙💙

Thanks so much. Hotch/Morgan is my favorite pairing in CM fandom. The contrasts between them as well as the similarities open up a lot of avenues to explore. I really feel like Mayhem sent their relationship in a much more positive direction.

Me too! I have a number of faves, to be completely honest, but they're the ship I've written the most, and apart from Hotch/Rossi, also the one I've read the most. They're just so great 🥰 and yes, very much in the same in so many ways, and different enough that they butt heads and learn from on another.

Wei Wuxian had no intention of becoming the fearsome Yiling Laozu, but when his red eyes and smoky twirls of resentful energy kept the most powerful people in the cultivation world from attacking innocents... well, he decided to lean into it.

If they wanted to make him a villain, not only was Wei Wuxian going to let them, but he was also going to actively encourage whatever rumors were out there.

And if some of those rumors were a little closer to the truth than most, it was because Wei Wuxian would do anything to keep those he cared about safe.

She lifts her chin - once a King or Queen of Narnia, always a King or Queen. . . - and makes the wand and its winter part of herself, and steps forwards into the nothingness between worlds.

Arcane, Vi/Sevika, "Sit down and shut up."

"I am doing what it takes to keep this city alive," says Sevika, her mechanical arm pinning Vi to the wall by her throat, "and you think I would let you come down here with some rich girl and make another power vacuum? I would never call Silco a good man, but at least everything he does is to keep Piltover from crushing us down again."
"You live, this time, out of respect for Vander's memory," she says, and practically throws Vi into a half broken chair "but before you go running off, you will sit down, shut up, and *listen* to me."

out of respect for Vander's memory thisss. I love it. I love it all but I am especially into Sevika's moral code here, and the fact that she keeps Vander in her heart/mind despite switching loyalties, because it's about Zaun, not about any one individual. This is great.
