It's a bit strange to read about a positive relationship between these two given they're most of the time at odds in canon. I imagine Homura's still on one of the earliest timelines so she's still on good terms with Mami and Sayaka.

Nice evasion there. :D I have no idea how to actually handle weapons but I figure there's proper ways to do it. Homura learning all by herself how to handle, shoot, reload, and care for her weapons just by reading manuals is something I could imagine her doing, instead of asking Mami for help.
"Homura blinked at the gesture, clearly at a loss of what to do. Geez! For all her acting cool, Homura sure didn't get how being friends worked." Sayaka getting slightly irritated at Homura even when they're on good terms is funny and very on character lol :D
"Yeah! I won't let her die this time, I promise you!" Ah, did Homura reveal her reason to make her wish? That would certainly endear her to Sayaka.

"Homura cried in the school bathroom when she rewound to the beginning. Being friends, allies, relying on others... So many variables. Her weak heart couldn't handle so much vulnerability. Next time she saw Sayaka, she remained distant, even as her heart wept."
In the end she has to prioritize herself over keeping her promise to Sayaka. As you said in a previous comment, distancing herself is a trauma response. It's not that Homura doesn't care, but that she can't allow herself to care, otherwise, she'll fall apart.
